Discovering Jewish Studies Collections in Academic Libraries: A Practical Guide

The U.S. colleges and universities offering non-sectarian educational programs in Jewish Studies rely on the support of their academic libraries for research materials and library services. For college libraries which use Library of Congress Classification scheme, it is a common practice to integrate studies resources into their general library collections. Since Jewish Studies sources span a vast number of subjects within all major disciplines, shelving integration leads to the dispersion of all relevant sources and such dispersion in turn leads to a variety of problems for library professionals and library users. For collection development librarians the problems range from lack of information about collection\u27s size, strengths or weaknesses, and for library users interested in browsing the collection, dispersion of subjects creates a major roadblock. This practical guide aims at providing a solution to such problems. By identifying all relevant Library of Congress call numbers and the corresponding Library of Congress subject headings, the guide offers a simplified access to Jewish Studies sources in general library collections. It is arranged by four major discipline: Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and General Works & Bibliographies. Within each discipline, specific LC call number ranges and corresponding subjects are listed. The subjects are further subdivided and precisely identified. The guide will assist collection development librarians, library liaisons, grants and fundraising professionals and especially the Jewish Studies faculty and students, in identifying and locating relevant sources

Human resources requirements for reindustrialisation in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county

After World War II, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county evolved into a major industrial centre due to coal mining, which was given priority in order to meet the industry’s growing demand for energy. Following the change of regime, the processes of deindustrialisation, which affected the various parts of the country very differently due to their diverse characteristics, had serious consequences in this county. Decline in mining had a major role in this. The county’s economic and social indicators still reflect this shock. The 2008 financial crisis shed doubts on the process of deindustrialisation. In its Communication for a European Industrial Renaissance (2014), the European Commission expressed its commitment to industrialisation, the modernisation of Europe's industrial base and the promotion of a competitive framework for EU industry. The success of reindustrialisation depends on a number of closely related factors. This article focuses on a single branch of the national economy: mining, and seeks to find the answer to whether a quality workforce and the necessary know-how are available in the region. We have prepared a SWOT analysis for the revitalisation of deep mines in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county and we collected the most important statistical data about the deep mining. The history of mining is reviewed and the training needs are presented to assess the viability of revitalizing mining, with a focus on the specific features of human capital. Restarting mining in Borsod[1]Abaúj-Zemplén county is ideal because there are many unskilled or low-skilled unemployed people for whom traditional manual work is the only realistic alternative and the county still has the professional background in the science of mining

    Standardisation Management

    Get PDF
Standards are essential for the success of products and services in the market, and for the well-functioning of processes and organisations. Trends such as globalisation, integration of ICT and electrotechnology in almost every sector, and the increased attention for sustainability, have made standards even more important. Unfortunately, little research is available to provide a better understanding of this phenomenon. In my inaugural lecture I first give an overview of the research I have conducted on the processes of standardisation. I discuss standards development, dissemination, market acceptance, implementation and use, and impact of standards and standardisation on business and society. In future research, my research agenda will focus on three levels of standardisation management: (1) within companies, (2) in complex projects involving many stakeholders, and (3) at local, national, regional and global level. I illustrate the societal relevance of my research with some examples about animals

Volně přístupný fond Národní technické knihovny v praxi: Open access area of the National Technical Library in practice

    Get PDF
This thesis studies an open access area of National Technical Library (NTL). Thesis includes a description of the collection manipulation in Klementinum, including moving of the collection to deposits in its new building in Dejvice. Furthermore it describes organization of the processing and delivering of the open access collection from the new building deposits to the open access area of NTL. The collection, which is assigned for an open access area is built according to the Library of Congress Classification. The aim of this thesis is to describe the integrated process of open access area handling. The thesis describes positives and negatives that appeared during the collection establishment. Furthermore it describes experience after one year of operation in the new building. As an output of this successful collection establishment in NTL, two questionnaires were compiled – one for employees and one for customers. The purpose of the questionnaires was to depict the feedback of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the open access area. In the end of the thesis problem areas and issues from the collection establishment realization, including suggested corrective solutions, are described

Friction and the texture of aggregate particles used in the road surface course

    Get PDF
Skid resistance, the road surface’s contribution to friction, is a crucial property of a road surface course required to maintain a safe and serviceable road network. Measurement of skid resistance is restricted by the need to measure the forces acting on a rubber wheel or slider while it is dragged across the surface. If the skid resistance of the road could be determined without the need for contact then measurement could be cheaper and more thorough. One route to achieving this goal is by measurement of the texture of the road that generates the friction experienced by a sliding tyre. However, the form and scale of the texture required is not well defined. The work presented in this thesis attempts to establish a robust methodology for measurement of texture on the surfaces of aggregate particles (the main constituent of the road surface course) so that it can be compared with friction. The stages of development are described in detail and the methodology is employed to examine the changing texture on two types of aggregate. The mechanisms by which these aggregates polish, methods for characterising their surface texture, and the consequences for the friction they are able to generate are explored
