    The role of primitive part modelling within an integrative simulation environment

    The component-based modeling approach to the simulation of HVAC systems has been in used for many years. The approach not only supports plant simulation but also allows the integration of the building and plant domains. Frequently, however, the plant models do not match exactly the types being used in a given project and where they do, may not be able to provide the required information. To address such limitations research has been undertaken into alternative approaches. The aim of such research is to provide a modeling approach that is widely applicable and offers efficient code management and data sharing. Primitive Part (PP) modeling is one such effort, which employs generic, process-based elements to attain modeling flexibility. Recent efforts have been on the development of data structure and graphics that facilitates PP auto-connection via computer interface.     Modeling and simulation of the short-term arterial pressure control system using an object oriented approach

    Object-oriented modeling is spreading in current simulation environments through the use of the individual components of the model and its interconnections to define the underlying dynamic equations. In this paper we describe the use of the SIMSCAPE simulation environment in the objectoriented modeling of the short-term arterial pressure control system when is applied to patients undergoing different situations as hemorrhage, liquid uptake or hemodialysis treatment. Results show the effectiveness of the baroreceptor control mechanism to compensate for the hypotension induced by the hemodialysis treatment. The described approach represents a valuable tool in the teaching of physiology for graduate medical and biomedical engineering students when facing to alternate hemodialysis treatment

    Data-driven modelling of biological multi-scale processes

    Biological processes involve a variety of spatial and temporal scales. A holistic understanding of many biological processes therefore requires multi-scale models which capture the relevant properties on all these scales. In this manuscript we review mathematical modelling approaches used to describe the individual spatial scales and how they are integrated into holistic models. We discuss the relation between spatial and temporal scales and the implication of that on multi-scale modelling. Based upon this overview over state-of-the-art modelling approaches, we formulate key challenges in mathematical and computational modelling of biological multi-scale and multi-physics processes. In particular, we considered the availability of analysis tools for multi-scale models and model-based multi-scale data integration. We provide a compact review of methods for model-based data integration and model-based hypothesis testing. Furthermore, novel approaches and recent trends are discussed, including computation time reduction using reduced order and surrogate models, which contribute to the solution of inference problems.     This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.This paper reviews some of our recent applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to model heat and mass transfer problems in neonatology and investigates the major heat and mass transfer mechanisms taking place in medical devices such as incubators, radiant warmers and oxygen hoods.     Nanoinformatics: developing new computing applications for nanomedicine

    Nanoinformatics has recently emerged to address the need of computing applications at the nano level. In this regard, the authors have participated in various initiatives to identify its concepts, foundations and challenges. While nanomaterials open up the possibility for developing new devices in many industrial and scientific areas, they also offer breakthrough perspectives for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. In this paper, we analyze the different aspects of nanoinformatics and suggest five research topics to help catalyze new research and development in the area, particularly focused on nanomedicine. We also encompass the use of informatics to further the biological and clinical applications of basic research in nanoscience and nanotechnology, and the related concept of an extended ?nanotype? to coalesce information related to nanoparticles. We suggest how nanoinformatics could accelerate developments in nanomedicine, similarly to what happened with the Human Genome and other -omics projects, on issues like exchanging modeling and simulation methods and tools, linking toxicity information to clinical and personal databases or developing new approaches for scientific ontologies, among many others

    Virtual learning can be defined as software systems created to support the teaching- learning process that allows teachers and students to communicate in an integrated manner through cyberspace. The rapid developments in technology over the past few years, have led to the innovation of systems through which information can be delivered independent of location. The current COVID-19 climate has resulted in the restructuring of the educational system and the adaptation of technology globally, so as to portray didactic ideologies. Investigation of efficacy of the use of design software platforms in a virtual learning environment is paramount as digitation has become a significant  factor in the synthesis and dissemination of learning materials within the educational system. The use of virtual classrooms is deemed advantageous as it enables the incorporation of learning styles, decreases the incidences of learning barriers, allows for adherence of  Covid-19 restrictions, and enhances mental encoding and information retention. It also comes with certain disadvantages, which are  attributable to the technological divide, economic and technological infrastructure, the user’s knowledge, perception and usage of these technological advancements, and its possible alienation and educational dissatisfaction. What and who benefits with these learning platforms; Is this the new normal going forward
