    International audienceVersatile and effective techniques for knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR) are essential for the development of successful intelligent systems. Many representatives of next generation KRR systems are based on graph-based knowledge representation formalisms and leverage graph-theoretical notions and results. The goal of the workshop series on Graph Structures for Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (GKR) is to bring together the researchers involved in the development and application of graph-based knowledge representation formalisms and reasoning techniques. This volume contains revised selected papers of the third edition of GKR, which took place in Beijing, China on August 3, 2013. Like the previous editions, held in Pasadena, USA (2009), and in Barcelona, Spain (2011), the workshop was associated with IJCAI (the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence), thus providing the perfect venue for a rich and valuable exchange. The scientific program of this workshop included many topics related to graph-based knowledge representation and reasoning such as representations of constraint satisfaction problems, formal concept analysis, conceptual graphs, argumentation frameworks and many more. All in all, the third edition of the GKR workshop was very successful. The papers coming from diverse fields all addressed various issues for knowledge representation and reasoning and the common graph-theoretic background allowed to bridge the gap between the different communities. This made it possible for the participants to gain new insights and inspiration. We are grateful for the support of IJCAI and we would also like to thank the Program Committee of the workshop for their hard work in reviewing papers and providing valuable guidance to the contributors. But, of course, GKR 2013 would not have been possible without the dedicated involvement of the contributing authors and participants

    Learning Score-Optimal Chordal Markov Networks via Branch and Bound

    Graphical models are commonly used to encode conditional independence assumptions between random variables. Here we focus on undirected graphical models called chordal Markov networks. Specifically, we will consider the chordal Markov network structure learning problem (CMSL), where the aim is to find (or "learn") a graph structure that best fits the given data with respect to a given decomposable scoring function. We introduce a branch and bound search algorithm for CMSL which represents chordal Markov network structures as decomposable DAGs. We show how revisiting equivalent solution candidates can be avoided in the search by detecting symmetries among graph structures. For the symmetry breaking we apply specific rules by van Beek and Hoffman (CP 2015), and also propose a new rule that takes advantage of the special nature of decomposable DAGs. In addition, we show how we can achieve on-the-fly score pruning for CMSL. We also propose methods for obtaining strong upper bounds for CMSL that help us close branches in the search tree. We implement a dynamic programming algorithm to find the optimal Bayesian network structures and then use the scores of those graphs as upper bounds. We also show how we can relax the requirement for decomposability in decomposable DAGs in order to achieve even stronger upper bounds. Furthermore, we propose a method for obtaining an initial lower bound in CMSL by turning a Bayesian network structure into a chordal Markov network structure. Empirically we show that our approach is competitive with the recently proposed CMSL algorithms by being able to sometimes scale up to 20 variables within 24 hours with unbounded treewidth. We also report that our branch and bound requires considerably less memory than the fastest of the recently proposed algorithms for CMSL

    Zadeh's fuzzy set theory incorporates the impreciseness of data and evaluations, by imputting the degrees by which each object belongs to a set. Its success fostered theories that codify the subjectivity, uncertainty, imprecision, or roughness of the evaluations. Their rationale is to produce new flexible methodologies in order to model a variety of concrete decision problems more realistically. This Special Issue garners contributions addressing novel tools, techniques and methodologies for decision making (inclusive of both individual and group, single- or multi-criteria decision making) in the context of these theories. It contains 38 research articles that contribute to a variety of setups that combine fuzziness, hesitancy, roughness, covering sets, and linguistic approaches. Their ranges vary from fundamental or technical to applied approaches

    Knowledge-based and data-driven approaches for geographical information access

    Geographical Information Access (GeoIA) can be defined as a way of retrieving information from textual collections that includes the automatic analysis and interpretation of the geographical constraints and terms present in queries and documents. This PhD thesis presents, describes and evaluates several heterogeneous approaches for the following three GeoIA tasks: Geographical Information Retrieval (GIR), Geographical Question Answering (GeoQA), and Textual Georeferencing (TG). The GIR task deals with user queries that search over documents (e.g. ¿vineyards in California?) and the GeoQA task treats questions that retrieve answers (e.g. ¿What is the capital of France?). On the other hand, TG is the task of associate one or more georeferences (such as polygons or coordinates in a geodetic reference system) to electronic documents. Current state-of-the-art AI algorithms are not yet fully understanding the semantic meaning and the geographical constraints and terms present in queries and document collections. This thesis attempts to improve the effectiveness results of GeoIA tasks by: 1) improving the detection, understanding, and use of a part of the geographical and the thematic content of queries and documents with Toponym Recognition, Toponym Disambiguation and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, and 2) combining Geographical Knowledge-Based Heuristics based on common sense with Data-Driven IR algorithms. The main contributions of this thesis to the state-of-the-art of GeoIA tasks are: 1) The presentation of 10 novel approaches for GeoIA tasks: 3 approaches for GIR, 3 for GeoQA, and 4 for Textual Georeferencing (TG). 2) The evaluation of these novel approaches in these contexts: within official evaluation benchmarks, after evaluation benchmarks with the test collections, and with other specific datasets. Most of these algorithms have been evaluated in international evaluations and some of them achieved top-ranked state-of-the-art results, including top-performing results in GIR (GeoCLEF 2007) and TG (MediaEval 2014) benchmarks. 3) The experiments reported in this PhD thesis show that the approaches can combine effectively Geographical Knowledge and NLP with Data-Driven techniques to improve the efectiveness measures of the three Geographical Information Access tasks investigated. 4) TALPGeoIR: a novel GIR approach that combines Geographical Knowledge ReRanking (GeoKR), NLP and Relevance Feedback (RF) that achieved state-of-the-art results in official GeoCLEF benchmarks (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2008; Mandl et al., 2008) and posterior experiments (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2015a). This approach has been evaluated with the full GeoCLEF corpus (100 topics) and showed that GeoKR, NLP, and RF techniques evaluated separately or in combination improve the results in MAP and R-Precision effectiveness measures of the state-of-the-art IR algorithms TF-IDF, BM25 and InL2 and show statistical significance in most of the experiments. 5) GeoTALP-QA: a scope-based GeoQA approach for Spanish and English and its evaluation with a set of questions of the Spanish geography (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2006). 6) Four state-of-the-art Textual Georeferencing approaches for informal and formal documents that achieved state-of-the-art results in evaluation benchmarks (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2014) and posterior experiments (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2011; Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2015b).L'Accés a la Informació Geogràfica (GeoAI) pot ser definit com una forma de recuperar informació de col·lecions textuals que inclou l'anàlisi automàtic i la interpretació dels termes i restriccions geogràfiques que apareixen en consultes i documents. Les principals contribucions d'aquesta tesi a l'estat de l'art de les tasques de GeoAI són: 1) La presentació de 10 noves aproximacions a les tasques de GeoAI: 3 aproximacions per RIG, 3 per GeoCR, i 4 per Georeferenciament Textual (GT). 2) L'avaluació d'aquestes noves aproximacions en aquests contexts: en el marc d'avaluacions comparatives internacionals, posteriorment a avaluacions comparatives internacionals amb les col·lections de test, i amb altres conjunts de dades específics.     Formal Methods of Argumentation as Models of Engineering Design Decisions and Processes

    Complex engineering projects comprise many individual design decisions. As these decisions are made over the course of months, even years, and across different teams of engineers, it is common for them to be based on different, possibly conflicting assumptions. The longer these inconsistencies go undetected, the costlier they are to resolve. Therefore it is important to spot them as early as possible. There is currently no software aimed explicitly at detecting inconsistencies in interrelated design decisions. This thesis is a step towards the development of such tools. We use formal methods of argumentation, a branch of artificial intelligence, as the foundation of a logical model of design decisions capable of handling inconsistency. It has three parts. First, argumentation is used to model the pros and cons of individual decisions and to reason about the possible worlds in which these arguments are justified. In the second part we study sequences of interrelated decisions. We identify cases where the arguments in one decision invalidate the justification for another decision, and develop a measure of the impact that choosing a specific option has on the consistency of the overall design. The final part of the thesis is concerned with non-deductive arguments, which are used in design debates, for example to draw analogies between past and current problems. Our model integrates deductive and non-deductive arguments side-by-side. This work is supported by our collaboration with the engineering department of Queen’s University Belfast and an industrial partner. The thesis contains two case studies of realistic problems and parts of it were implemented as software prototypes. We also give theoretical results demonstrating the internal consistency of our model
