    Industrial Symbiotic Relations as Cooperative Games

    In this paper, we introduce a game-theoretical formulation for a specific form of collaborative industrial relations called "Industrial Symbiotic Relation (ISR) games" and provide a formal framework to model, verify, and support collaboration decisions in this new class of two-person operational games. ISR games are formalized as cooperative cost-allocation games with the aim to allocate the total ISR-related operational cost to involved industrial firms in a fair and stable manner by taking into account their contribution to the total traditional ISR-related cost. We tailor two types of allocation mechanisms using which firms can implement cost allocations that result in a collaboration that satisfies the fairness and stability properties. Moreover, while industries receive a particular ISR proposal, our introduced methodology is applicable as a managerial decision support to systematically verify the quality of the ISR in question.     Fostering Multi-Agent Cooperation through Implicit Responsibility

    For integration in real-world environments, it is critical that autonomousagents are capable of behaving responsibly while working alongside humans andother agents. Existing frameworks of responsibility for multi-agent systems typically model responsibilities in terms of adherence to explicit standards. Suchframeworks do not reflect the often unstated, or implicit, way in which responsibilities can operate in the real world. We introduce the notion of implicit responsibilities: self-imposed standards of responsible behaviour that emerge and guideindividual decision-making without any formal or explicit agreement.We propose that incorporating implicit responsibilities into multi-agent learningand decision-making is a novel approach for fostering mutually beneficial cooperative behaviours. As a preliminary investigation, we present a proof-of-conceptapproach for integrating implicit responsibility into independent reinforcementlearning agents through reward shaping. We evaluate our approach through simulation experiments in an environment characterised by conflicting individual andgroup incentives. Our findings suggest that societies of agents modelling implicitresponsibilities can learn to cooperate more quickly, and achieve greater returnscompared to baseline

    Copyright © 2019 for this paper by its authors. Computer infiltration into the workplace and society has been extensive, yet the ideals of efficacy, efficiency and satisfaction remain unattained. We propose an ambitious framework to take forward Cognitive Ergonomics and Human Factors. Increasing the visibility of the field while linking and nurturing the practitioners is essential. We define Cognitive Ergonomics as an interdisciplinary field of research and practice dedicated towards: – Understanding and supporting human cognition and performance – At work or when performing other goal-directed tasks – With computers and other engineered artefacts – To improve human well-being and our relationship with our environment. This revitalising programme will be based on: – Interdisciplinary Research – Research-based Policy – Education The proposed interdisciplinary framework will refocus on the classical facets of usability and include work-relevant emotions as well as understanding the minimal requirements for successful interactions (including understanding agency). The research-based policy will focus on efficacy in terms of human cognitive ergonomics in a holistic perspective (i.e. producing the effects we want without adverse effects). This will include complex questions about interface design in the context of the organisational and business models that influence its development (e.g. monetization). The educational courses will spotlight how end-users should not have their time wasted, as well as the consequences of digital mediation in learning generally. This framework will differentiate cognitive ergonomics from its affiliated fields of Human-Computer Interaction and Psychology, and address a gap between the social sciences and engineering that has become more urgent in the past 5-10 years. It is ideally suited to be carried forward by the European Association of Cognitive Ergonomics. This framework is specifically a collaborative effort grounded in European intellectual and scientific tradition — a perspective that offers a much-needed contrast and complement to Anglosphere research and development agendas in interactive technologies
