Generative design in the development of a robotic manipulator

    Get PDF
The emergence of cyber physical production systems has brought with it an increased utilization of robotics in collaborative manufacturing environments. An approach to meet this demand is to democratize robotics by making cheaper more customizable robots that can be implemented by small and medium enterprises. To tackle this problem this research looks at using rapid prototyping techniques for the development of customizable robotic manipulators which can be implemented in cyber physical production systems. This research therefore contributes an approach for designing connected and rapid prototyped robotic manipulators. This approach considers both the software and hardware development required for implementing a robotic manipulator. Furthermore generative design, an evolutionary and artificial intelligence based approach, is used to design the link modules between the robot joints. This component has been identified as the ideal to be designed with this approach as it benefits most of the generative design approach coupled with rapid prototyping. This paper also explores a robotic manipulator control structure based on Ethernet control technology for implementation within cyber physical production systems.peer-reviewe

"We are living in a different time zone": transnational working places and the concept of a "glocalized intermediary class"

(Autorenreferat)"The article would like to make a proposition on how to amend the under differentiated way social stratification within the 'global society' is usually theoretized. In the dominant discourse there seems to be only one global class, the 'winners of globalization'. Critics of this narrative, which the author calls the cosmopolitan delusion, make the 'losers' of neoliberal globalization visible. But the 'vulnerable' (Robert Castel) and precarious are usually not included in such a dualistic two-class approach. If the middle class(es) within societies of the Global South again are mentioned, this is usually done in simplified way. The author would like to introduce the concept of a 'glocalized intermediary class' (GIC) to better capture the social location of transnational class positions in between societies of the Global North and the Global South. The GICs can be considered to be part of the (service or white collar) proletariat of the North but at the same time to be part of the middle class in the society of their origin (in this case: the Philippines). If the middle class(es) can be understood as a 'contradictory class location' (Goldthorpe), this is even intensified for GICs working and living in between the worlds and the class positions. The exploratory theory of a 'glocalized intermediary class' is exemplified by the agents working at international call centers in the Philippines. They are working at transnational working places and can be considered sociocultural migrants." (author's abstract

A Dynamic Knowledge Management Framework for the High Value Manufacturing Industry

    Get PDF
Dynamic Knowledge Management (KM) is a combination of cultural and technological factors, including the cultural factors of people and their motivations, technological factors of content and infrastructure and, where these both come together, interface factors. In this paper a Dynamic KM framework is described in the context of employees being motivated to create profit for their company through product development in high value manufacturing. It is reported how the framework was discussed during a meeting of the collaborating company’s (BAE Systems) project stakeholders. Participants agreed the framework would have most benefit at the start of the product lifecycle before key decisions were made. The framework has been designed to support organisational learning and to reward employees that improve the position of the company in the market place

Toward the Development of a Maturity Model for Digitalization within the Manufacturing Industry’s Supply Chain

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is the scientific development of a maturity model concerning the digital transformation of companies within the manufacturing industry’s supply chain. The rather “broad” and dispersed “mega-trend” of digitalization is expected to play an increasingly important role for companies as well as for the (digital) supply chain of the future. Such a model comprises the objective of addressing fundamental components, complementary innovations and relevant terminologies, like smart products, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Big Data Analytics. Scientific rigor is achieved through conducting grounded theory research and in-depth interviews as methods of data collection and evaluation. Furthermore, relevant aspects concerning the development and construction of maturity models are discussed, before a suitable and scientifically elaborated maturity model concerning digitalization emerges from the course of investigation and its value for economic practice as well as for the scientific community is specified

Chinese e-commerce companies are in the ascendant into the overseas market, while still lack adequate academic attention. Adopting case study and public policy approaches, this article applies the symbiosis theory, based on the fundamentals of the development data of Chinese e-commerce companies in the Indonesia market, to construct an evaluation model and proposes a strategic orientation to reaching an embedded survival and further development. Through understanding the structural characteristics and developing status of different types of Chinese e-commerce companies going overseas, a detailed investigation to the Chinese e-commerce companies investing in Indonesia has been conducted. Findings show that the production capacity cooperation stage of the two countries has a trend of asymmetric symbiosis gradually developing towards symmetric symbiosis. To promote a continuous economic cooperation between China and Indonesia, this article proposes that the national-level collaboration policies, cross-border e-commerce value chain, as well as organizational-level coordination are the key sectors for reaching the vision of symmetric symbiosis between the two countries. Sectors in infrastructure, trade, capital, and people’s mindset intimacy also contribute to construct a symbiosis mechanism for capacity cooperation between the two nations

A key component of Cyber Physical Production Systems (CPPS) are connected Cyber Physical Machines (CPMs), or smart machines, which can act independently to each other and communicate in situation dependant ways. This new era of connected manufacturing has brought about new requirements for machines which are being deployed to the manufacturing shop floor. Cyber physical machines are not only required to execute industrial or manufacturing process, but they need to be capable of meeting other requirements, such as self-diagnoses, intelligent decision making, modularity and networkability. This research explores the design process of cyber physical machines as it is applied to the design of an industrial robotic manipulator.peer-reviewe

For the past few decades to the era of industry 4.0, young practising designers have been enduring environmental communication challenges in the green manufacturing context. The problems stem from their failure to comprehend the pattern of environment communication phenomenally. The objective of this study is to address the environmentally-driven elements of recycling methodology along with the product’s form development via “re-think waste†of the environmental communications concept; screened by the bubbling model of intangible ecological form theory. In the realm of industrial design, it is implicitly visualised by the common Mobius loop cycle method of the green manufacturing paradigm. Under the Descriptive Study I of design research methodology framework, the goal-setting participation from Malaysian manufacturers sample using two methodologies concurrently; (1) the cluster sampling that measured the designs perception as the quantitative structure by statistic values and (2) the purposive sampling interpreted the design behaviors of the subject as the qualitative structure by first cycle coding. Consequently, the heuristic evaluation is used to triangulate the two methodologies. For the finding, an intangible ecological form model formulated the change for environmental communication to digitise and screen an intangible ecological form according to extrapolative strategy morphing
