    Multi - objective sliding mode control of active magnetic bearing system

    Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) system is known to inherit many nonlinearity effects due to its rotor dynamic motion and the electromagnetic actuators which make the system highly nonlinear, coupled and open-loop unstable. The major nonlinearities that are associated with AMB system are gyroscopic effect, rotor mass imbalance and nonlinear electromagnetics in which the gyroscopics and imbalance are dependent to the rotational speed of the rotor. In order to provide satisfactory system performance for a wide range of system condition, active control is thus essential. The main concern of the thesis is the modeling of the nonlinear AMB system and synthesizing a robust control method based on Sliding Mode Control (SMC) technique such that the system can achieve robust performance under various system nonlinearities. The model of the AMB system is developed based on the integration of the rotor and electromagnetic dynamics which forms nonlinear time varying state equations that represent a reasonably close description of the actual system. Based on the known bound of the system parameters and state variables, the model is restructured to become a class of uncertain system by using a deterministic approach. In formulating the control algorithm to control the system, SMC theory is adapted which involves the formulation of the sliding surface and the control law such that the state trajectories are driven to the stable sliding manifold. The surface design involves the transformation of the system into a special canonical representation such that the sliding motion can be characterized by a convex representation of the desired system performances. Optimal Linear Quadratic (LQ) characteristics and regional pole-clustering of the closed-loop poles are designed to be the objectives to be fulfilled in the surface design where the formulation is represented as a set of Linear Matrix Inequality optimization problem. For the control law design, a new continuous SMC controller is proposed in which asymptotic convergence of the system’s state trajectories in finite time is guaranteed. This is achieved by adapting the equivalent control approach with the exponential decaying boundary layer technique. The newly designed sliding surface and control law form the complete Multi-objective SMC (MO-SMC) and the proposed algorithm is applied into the nonlinear AMB in which the results show that robust system performance is achieved for various system conditions. The findings also demonstrate that the MO-SMC gives better system response than the reported ideal SMC (I-SMC) and continuous SMC (C-SMC)

    Parallel Distributed Compensation for Voltage Controlled Active Magnetic Bearing System using Integral Fuzzy Model

    Parallel Distributed Compensation (PDC) for current-controlled Active Magnetic Bearing System (AMBS) has been quite effective in recent years. However, this method does not take into account the dynamics associated with the electromagnet. This limits the method to smaller scale applications where the electromagnet dynamics can be neglected. Voltage-controlled AMBS is used to overcome this limitation but this comes with serious challenges such as complex mathematical modelling and higher order system control. In this work, a PDC with integral part is proposed for position and input tracking control of voltage-controlled AMBS. PDC method is based on nonlinear Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. It is shown that the proposed method outperforms the conventional fuzzy PDC. It stabilizes the bearing shaft at any chosen operating point and tracks any chosen smooth trajectory within the air gap with a high external disturbance rejection capability

    Application of Fuzzy control algorithms for electric vehicle antilock braking/traction control systems

    Abstract—The application of fuzzy-based control strategies has recently gained enormous recognition as an approach for the rapid development of effective controllers for nonlinear time-variant systems. This paper describes the preliminary research and implementation of a fuzzy logic based controller to control the wheel slip for electric vehicle antilock braking systems (ABSs). As the dynamics of the braking systems are highly nonlinear and time variant, fuzzy control offers potential as an important tool for development of robust traction control. Simulation studies are employed to derive an initial rule base that is then tested on an experimental test facility representing the dynamics of a braking system. The test facility is composed of an induction machine load operating in the generating region. It is shown that the torque-slip characteristics of an induction motor provides a convenient platform for simulating a variety of tire/road - driving conditions, negating the initial requirement for skid-pan trials when developing algorithms. The fuzzy membership functions were subsequently refined by analysis of the data acquired from the test facility while simulating operation at a high coefficient of friction. The robustness of the fuzzy-logic slip regulator is further tested by applying the resulting controller over a wide range of operating conditions. The results indicate that ABS/traction control may substantially improve longitudinal performance and offer significant potential for optimal control of driven wheels, especially under icy conditions where classical ABS/traction control schemes are constrained to operate very conservatively

    Theoretical analysis and experimental validation of a simplified fractional order controller for a magnetic levitation system

    Fractional order (FO) controllers are among the emerging solutions for increasing closed-loop performance and robustness. However, they have been applied mostly to stable processes. When applied to unstable systems, the tuning technique uses the well-known frequency-domain procedures or complex genetic algorithms. This brief proposes a special type of an FO controller, as well as a novel tuning procedure, which is simple and does not involve any optimization routines. The controller parameters may be determined directly using overshoot requirements and the study of the stability of FO systems. The tuning procedure is given for the general case of a class of unstable systems with pole multiplicity. The advantage of the proposed FO controller consists in the simplicity of the tuning approach. The case study considered in this brief consists in a magnetic levitation system. The experimental results provided show that the designed controller can indeed stabilize the magnetic levitation system, as well as provide robustness to modeling uncertainties and supplementary loading conditions. For comparison purposes, a simple PID controller is also designed to point out the advantages of using the proposed FO controller

    Feasibility of Using Nonlinear Time-Frequency Control for Magnetorheological Dampers in Vehicle Suspension

    Semi-active vehicle suspensions that use magnetorheological (MR) dampers are able to better dissipate vibrations compared to conventional dampers because of their controllable damping characteristics. The performance of current MR damper control methods is often hindered by incorrect assumptions and linearized models. Therefore, a need exists to design an adaptive controller with improved accuracy and reliability. The objective of this research is to design an improved controller for MR dampers in vehicle suspension using the nonlinear time-frequency control approach and evaluate its feasibility by numerically employing MATLAB Simulink. Simulations in this research are performed using a simplified quarter car suspension model and modified Bouc-Wen damper model. The proposed control method is evaluated based on its ability to reduce the amplitude of vibrations and minimize acceleration of the car body for various test cases. Simulations are also performed using the skyhook controller and passive suspension to assess the performance of the proposed controller. The results of the simulations show that the proposed nonlinear time-frequency controller can successfully be applied to an MR damper suspensions system for vibration control. The proposed controller outperforms the skyhook controller in terms of reducing acceleration of the car body in each of the tested scenarios. The proposed controller also shows the ability to more efficiently manage the current input to the system. In general, the skyhook controller gives more improved vibration amplitude responses but is prone to generate large spikes in car body acceleration at higher frequency road profile inputs. Simulations performed with the passive system show large displacement amplitudes and inability to prevent oscillation. The feed-forward aspect and adaptive nature of the proposed controller gives it the ability to better compensate for the time-delay in the operation of the MR damper. The proposed controller shows sensitivity to controller parameters when pursuing the best response for different road profile input cases

    Metaheuristic Optimization Techniques Used in Controlling of an Active Magnetic Bearing System for High-Speed Machining Application

    Smart control tactics, wider stability region, rapid reaction time, and high-speed performance are essential requirements for any controller to provide a smooth, vibrationless, and efficient performance of an in-house fabricated active magnetic bearing (AMB) system. In this manuscript, three pre-eminent population-based metaheuristic optimization techniques: Genetic algorithm (GA), Particle swarm optimization (PSO), and Cuckoo search algorithm (CSA) are implemented one by one, to calculate optimized gain parameters of PID controller for the proposed closed-loop active magnetic bearing (AMB) system. Performance indices or, objective functions on which these optimization techniques are executed are integral absolute error (IAE), integral square error (ISE), integral time multiplied absolute error (ITAE), and integral time multiplied square error (ITSE). The significance of an optimization technique and objective function can obtain only by implementing it. As a result, several comparisons are made based on statistical performance, time domain, frequency response behavior, and algorithm execution time. Finally, the applicability of optimization strategies in addition to the performance indices is determined with the aid of the comparative analysis. That could assist in choosing a suitable optimization technique along with a performance index for a high-speed application of an active magnetic bearing system

    Abstract : Over the past three decades, various fields have witnessed a successful application of active magnetic bearing (AMB) systems. Their favorable features include supporting high-speed rotation, low power consumption, and rotor dynamics control. Although their losses are much lower than roller bearings, these losses could limit the operation in some applications such as flywheel energy storage systems and vacuum applications. Many researchers focused their efforts on boosting magnetic bearings energy efficiency via minimizing currents supplied to electromagnetic coils either by a software solution or a hardware solution. According to a previous study, we adopt the hardware solution in this thesis. More specifically, we investigate developing an efficient and yet simple control scheme for regulating a permanent magnet-biased active magnetic bearing system. The control objective here is to suppress the rotor vibrations and reduce the corresponding control currents as possible throughout a wide operating range. Although adopting the hardware approach could achieve an energy-efficient AMB, employing an advanced control scheme could achieve a further reduction in power consumption. Many advanced control techniques have been proposed in the literature to achieve a satisfactory performance. However, the complexity of the majority of control schemes and the potential requirement of powerful platform could discourage their application in practice. The motivation behind this work is to improve the closed-loop performance without the need to do model identification and following the conventional procedure for developing a model-based controller. Here, we propose applying the hybridization concept to exploit the classical PID control and some nonlinear control tools such as first- and second-order sliding mode control, high gain observer, backstepping, and adaptive techniques to develop efficient and practical control schemes. All developed control schemes in this thesis are digitally implemented and validated on the eZdsp F2812 control board. Therefore, the applicability of the proposed model-free techniques for practical application is demonstrated. Furthermore, some of the proposed control schemes successfully achieve a good compromise between the objectives of rotor vibration attenuation and control currents minimization over a wide operating range.Résumé: Au cours des trois dernières décennies, divers domaines ont connu une application réussie des systèmes de paliers magnétiques actifs (PMA). Leurs caractéristiques favorables comprennent une capacité de rotation à grande vitesse, une faible consommation d'énergie, et le contrôle de la dynamique du rotor. Bien que leurs pertes soient beaucoup plus basses que les roulements à rouleaux, ces pertes pourraient limiter l'opération dans certaines applications telles que les systèmes de stockage d'énergie à volant d'inertie et les applications sous vide. De nombreux chercheurs ont concentré leurs efforts sur le renforcement de l'efficacité énergétique des paliers magnétiques par la minimisation des courants fournis aux bobines électromagnétiques soit par une solution logicielle, soit par une solution matérielle. Selon une étude précédente, nous adoptons la solution matérielle dans cette thèse. Plus précisément, nous étudions le développement d'un système de contrôle efficace et simple pour réguler un système de palier magnétique actif à aimant permanent polarisé. L'objectif de contrôle ici est de supprimer les vibrations du rotor et de réduire les courants de commande correspondants autant que possible tout au long d'une large plage de fonctionnement. Bien que l'adoption de l'approche matérielle pourrait atteindre un PMA économe en énergie, un système de contrôle avancé pourrait parvenir à une réduction supplémentaire de la consommation d'énergie. De nombreuses techniques de contrôle avancées ont été proposées dans la littérature pour obtenir une performance satisfaisante. Cependant, la complexité de la majorité des systèmes de contrôle et l'exigence potentielle d’une plate-forme puissante pourrait décourager leur application dans la pratique. La motivation derrière ce travail est d'améliorer les performances en boucle fermée, sans la nécessité de procéder à l'identification du modèle et en suivant la procédure classique pour développer un contrôleur basé sur un modèle. Ici, nous proposons l'application du concept d'hybridation pour exploiter le contrôle PID classique et certains outils de contrôle non linéaires tels que contrôle par mode glissement du premier et du second ordre, observateur à grand gain, backstepping et techniques adaptatives pour développer des systèmes de contrôle efficaces et pratiques. Tous les systèmes de contrôle développés dans cette thèse sont numériquement mis en oeuvre et évaluées sur la carte de contrôle eZdsp F2812. Par conséquent, l'applicabilité des techniques de modèle libre proposé pour l'application pratique est démontrée. En outre, certains des régimes de contrôle proposés ont réalisé avec succès un bon compromis entre les objectifs au rotor d’atténuation des vibrations et la minimisation des courants de commande sur une grande plage de fonctionnement
