    Shadow Price Guided Genetic Algorithms

    The Genetic Algorithm (GA) is a popular global search algorithm. Although it has been used successfully in many fields, there are still performance challenges that prevent GA’s further success. The performance challenges include: difficult to reach optimal solutions for complex problems and take a very long time to solve difficult problems. This dissertation is to research new ways to improve GA’s performance on solution quality and convergence speed. The main focus is to present the concept of shadow price and propose a two-measurement GA. The new algorithm uses the fitness value to measure solutions and shadow price to evaluate components. New shadow price Guided operators are used to achieve good measurable evolutions. Simulation results have shown that the new shadow price Guided genetic algorithm (SGA) is effective in terms of performance and efficient in terms of speed

    A general genetic algorithm for one and two dimensional cutting and packing problems

    Cutting and packing problems are combinatorial optimisation problems. The major interest in these problems is their practical significance, in manufacturing and other business sectors. In most manufacturing situations a raw material usually in some standard size has to be divided or be cut into smaller items to complete the production of some product. Since the cost of this raw material usually forms a significant portion of the input costs, it is therefore desirable that this resource be used efficiently. A hybrid general genetic algorithm is presented in this work to solve one and two dimensional problems of this nature. The novelties with this algorithm are: A novel placement heuristic hybridised with a Genetic Algorithm is introduced and a general solution encoding scheme which is used to encode one dimensional and two dimensional problems is also introduced

    The convergence of geo-space and network space in city region development in China: taking the Mid-Yangtze River city region as an example

    This thesis is an empirical examination of the spatial mechanisms of city region development in China taking the Mid-Yangtze River (MYR) city region as an example, and investigating in particular, how spatial mechanisms are affected by the relationships between spatial factors and network capital. Conventional city region theory assumes that regional development is spatially homogeneous across spatial units and determined by indigenous factors. By using GIS techniques, Social Network Analysis (SNA) and Spatial Econometric Modelling on data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS), the Zephyr database, and the State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO), this thesis challenges that assumption. Chapter 2 outlines the interaction between cities and world economy change. Chapter 3 focuses on urban and regional change in the context of globalisation specifically, showing the importance of the city region in a new global economic context. Chapter 4 advances a spatial framework to investigate city region development, while Chapter 5 advances a network framework to investigate city region development, which builds two main research frameworks for the thesis. The next three chapters represent the main empirical contribution of this thesis. In terms of spatial patterns, Chapter 6 shows that the MYR city region is characterised by coexisting spatial associations and heterogeneity. Chapter 7 calculates the network capital that is embedded in cities’ strategic positions across territories. In terms of underlying driving mechanisms, Chapter 8 demonstrates that city region development is affected by the simultaneity of spatial spillovers based on geographic proximity and network capital based on strategic positions over spatial constraints. Chapter 9 discusses the main empirical findings and concludes by operationalising complexity theory as a means of understanding city region spatial driving mechanisms. Combining geo-space and network space mechanisms in analysis is found to have value for dissecting the complexity of city region development

    Exact and evolutionary algorithms for the score-constrained packing problem

    This thesis concerns the Score-Constrained Packing Problem (SCPP), a combinatorial optimisation problem related to the one-dimensional bin packing problem. The aim of the SCPP is to pack a set of rectangular items from left to right into the fewest number of bins such that no bin is overfilled; however, the order and orientation of the items in each bin affects the feasibility of the overall solution. The SCPP has applications in the packaging industry, and obtaining high quality solutions for instances of the SCPP has the ability to reduce the amount of waste material, costs, and time, which motivates the study in this thesis. The minimal existing research on the SCPP leads us to explore a wide range of approaches to the problem in this thesis, implementing ideas from related problems in literature as well as bespoke methods. To begin, we present an exact algorithm that can produce a feasible configuration of a subset of items in a single bin in polynomial-time. We then introduce a range of methods for the SCPP including heuristics, an evolutionary algorithm framework comprising a local search procedure and a choice of three distinct recombination operators, and two algorithms combining metaheuristics with an exact procedure. Each method is investigated to gain more insight into the characteristics that benefit or hinder the improvement of solutions, both theoretically and computationally, using a large number of problem instances with varying parameters. This allows us to determine the specific methods and properties that produce superior solutions depending on the type of problem instance
