    Comparison and Design Optimization of a Five-Phase Flux-Switching PM Machine for In-Wheel Traction Applications

    A comparative study of five-phase outer-rotor flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines with different topologies for in-wheel traction applications is presented in this paper. Those topologies include double-layer winding, single-layer winding, C-core, and E-core configurations. The electromagnetic performance in the low-speed region, the flux-weakening capability in the high-speed region, and the fault-tolerance capability are all investigated in detail. The results indicate that the E-core FSPM machine has performance advantages. Furthermore, two kinds of E-core FSPM machines with different stator and rotor pole combinations are optimized, respectively. In order to reduce the computational burden during the large-scale optimization process, a mathematical technique is developed based on the concept of computationally efficient finite-element analysis. While a differential evolution algorithm serves as a global search engine to target optimized designs. Subsequently, multiobjective tradeoffs are presented based on a Pareto-set for 20 000 candidate designs. Finally, an optimal design is prototyped, and some experimental results are given to confirm the validity of the simulation results in this paper

    Real-Time Fault Diagnosis of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor and Drive System

    Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) have gained massive popularity in industrial applications such as electric vehicles, robotic systems, and offshore industries due to their merits of efficiency, power density, and controllability. PMSMs working in such applications are constantly exposed to electrical, thermal, and mechanical stresses, resulting in different faults such as electrical, mechanical, and magnetic faults. These faults may lead to efficiency reduction, excessive heat, and even catastrophic system breakdown if not diagnosed in time. Therefore, developing methods for real-time condition monitoring and detection of faults at early stages can substantially lower maintenance costs, downtime of the system, and productivity loss. In this dissertation, condition monitoring and detection of the three most common faults in PMSMs and drive systems, namely inter-turn short circuit, demagnetization, and sensor faults are studied. First, modeling and detection of inter-turn short circuit fault is investigated by proposing one FEM-based model, and one analytical model. In these two models, efforts are made to extract either fault indicators or adjustments for being used in combination with more complex detection methods. Subsequently, a systematic fault diagnosis of PMSM and drive system containing multiple faults based on structural analysis is presented. After implementing structural analysis and obtaining the redundant part of the PMSM and drive system, several sequential residuals are designed and implemented based on the fault terms that appear in each of the redundant sets to detect and isolate the studied faults which are applied at different time intervals. Finally, real-time detection of faults in PMSMs and drive systems by using a powerful statistical signal-processing detector such as generalized likelihood ratio test is investigated. By using generalized likelihood ratio test, a threshold was obtained based on choosing the probability of a false alarm and the probability of detection for each detector based on which decision was made to indicate the presence of the studied faults. To improve the detection and recovery delay time, a recursive cumulative GLRT with an adaptive threshold algorithm is implemented. As a result, a more processed fault indicator is achieved by this recursive algorithm that is compared to an arbitrary threshold, and a decision is made in real-time performance. The experimental results show that the statistical detector is able to efficiently detect all the unexpected faults in the presence of unknown noise and without experiencing any false alarm, proving the effectiveness of this diagnostic approach.publishedVersio

    Rotor magnet demagnetisation diagnosis in asymmetrical six-phase surface-mounted AC PMSM drives

    Multiphase permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are receiving more and more interest in safety-critical modern industries owing to their higher reliability when compared with conventional three-phase PMSMs. Rotor magnets are critical components, which, in case of fault, directly affect the performance of the PMSMs. Thus, monitoring the rotor magnets status is essential to ensure both high level of efficiency and service continuity. The present study focuses on the investigation of a new approach for the detection of rotor magnet demagnetisation in a vector-controlled asymmetrical six-phase surface-mounted AC PMSM. The main contribution of the proposed technique is the assessment of a rotor demagnetisation fault index derived from the fifth and seventh harmonics of the stator voltage space vector evaluated in the α 5–β 5-plane, and already available in the control system platform. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated using finite element analysis and numerical simulations, both validated by experimental tests

    207 p.En esta tesis se estudia la utilización de un accionamiento eléctrico basado en una máquina simétrica dual trifásica aplicada al sistema de propulsión de un vehículo eléctrico. Dicho accionamiento está basado en una máquina síncrona de imanes permanentes interiores. Además, dispone de un bus CC con una configuración en cascada. Por otra parte, se incorpora un convertidor CC/CC entre el módulo de baterías y el inversor de seis fases para proveer el vehículo con capacidades de carga rápida, y evitando al mismo tiempo la utilización de semiconductores de potencia con altas tensiones nominales. En este escenario, el algoritmo de control debe hacer frente a las no linealidades de la máquina, proporcionando un comando de consigna preciso para todo el rango de par y velocidad del convertidor. Por lo tanto, deben tenerse en cuenta los efectos de acoplamiento cruzado entre los devanados, y la tensión de los condensadores de enlace en cascada debe controlarse y equilibrarse activamente. En vista de ello, los autores proponen un novedoso enfoque de control que proporciona todas estas funcionalidades.     Improved efficiency with adaptive front and rear axle independently driven powertrain and disconnect functionality

    Front and rear axle independently driven (FRID) powertrains are becoming a popular solution for electric vehicles (EVs) due to torque distribution capability which can enhance powertrain energy efficiency. Typically, permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are used for FRID powertrains due to their high torque, and power density. However, the drive-cycle efficiency of FRID powertrains with PMSMs is typically reduced in comparison to single motor drives. This is due to the unwanted no-load losses of PMSMs in the field weakening region. To overcome this drawback of PMSM FRIDs, this paper proposes an adaptive front- and rear-axle independently driven (AFRID) powertrain, utilizing two dog clutches, so that the powertrain can be operated in different modes (rear, front, and all-wheel drive) by adaptively connecting and disconnecting the front and/or rear electric drive unit (EDU). A rule-based mode selection strategy is developed to utilize the flexibility of different powertrain operating modes of the powertrain for maximizing the energy efficiency of the EDU. The simulation results show that the suggested AFRID powertrain, in comparison to a common FRID powertrain, can improve the WLTC drive-cycle consumption from 22.17 kWhh to 20.50 kWhh per 100 km. Based on the route and road-load information, the energy-saving potential of the AFRID powertrain can be further improved to 20.37 kWhh per 100 km by a suggested predictive mode selection strategy, achieving an optimal mode selection

    Optimal design of a three-phase AFPM for in-wheel electrical traction

    Sinusoidally fed permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) fulfill the special features required for traction motors to be applied in electric vehicles (EV). Among them, axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) synchronous motors are especially suited for in-wheel applications. Electric motors used in such applications must meet two main requirements, i.e. high power density and fault tolerance. This paper deals with the optimal design of an AFPM for in-wheel applications used to drive an electrical scooter. The single-objective optimization process carried out in this paper is based on designing the AFPM to obtain an optimized power density while ensuring appropriate fault tolerance requirements. For this purpose a set of analytical equations are applied to obtain the geometrical, electric and mechanical parameters of the optimized AFPM and several design restrictions are applied to ensure fault tolerance capability. The optimization process is based on a genetic algorithm and two more constrained nonlinear optimization algorithms in which the objective function is the power density. Comparisons with available data found in the technical bibliography show the appropriateness of the approach developed in this work.Postprint (published version

    Emerging Multiport Electrical Machines and Systems: Past Developments, Current Challenges, and Future Prospects

    Distinct from the conventional machines with only one electrical and one mechanical port, electrical machines featuring multiple electrical/mechanical ports (the so-called multiport electrical machines) provide a compact, flexible, and highly efficient manner to convert and/or transfer energies among different ports. This paper attempts to make a comprehensive overview of the existing multiport topologies, from fundamental characteristics to advanced modeling, analysis, and control, with particular emphasis on the extensively investigated brushless doubly fed machines for highly reliable wind turbines and power split devices for hybrid electric vehicles. A qualitative review approach is mainly adopted, but strong efforts are also made to quantitatively highlight the electromagnetic and control performance. Research challenges are identified, and future trends are discussed

    Modelling and control techniques for multiphase electric drives: a phase variable approach

    Multiphase electric drives are today one of the most relevant research topics for the electrical engineering scientific community, thanks to the many advantages they offer over standard three-phase solutions (e.g., power segmentation, fault-tolerance, optimized performances, torque/power sharing strategies, etc...). They are considered promising solutions in many application areas, like industry, traction and renewable energy integration, and especially in presence of high-power or high-reliability requirements. However, contrarily to the three-phase counterparts, multiphase drives can assume a wider variety of different configurations, concerning both the electrical machine (e.g., symmetrical/asymmetrical windings disposition, concentrated/distributed windings, etc...) and the overall drive topology (e.g., single-star configuration, multiple-star configuration, open-end windings, etc…). This aspect, together with the higher number of variables of the system, can make their analysis and control more challenging, especially when dealing with reconfigurable systems (e.g., in post-fault scenarios). This Ph.D. thesis is focused on the mathematical modelling and on the control of multiphase electric drives. The aim of this research is to develop a generalized model-based approach that can be used in multiple configurations and scenarios, requiring minimal reconfigurations to deal with different machine designs and/or different converter topologies, and suitable both in healthy and in faulty operating conditions. Standard field-oriented approaches for the analysis and control of multiphase drives, directly derived as extensions of the three-phase equivalents, despite being relatively easy and convenient solutions to deal with symmetrical machines, may suffer some hurdles when applied to some asymmetrical configurations, including post-fault layouts. To address these issues, a different approach, completely derived in the phase variable domain, is here developed. The method does not require any vector space decomposition or rotational transformation but instead explicitly considers the mathematical properties of the multiphase machine and the effects of the drive topology (which typically introduces some constraints on the system variables). In this thesis work, the proposed approach is particularized for multiphase permanent magnet synchronous machines and for multiphase synchronous reluctance machines. All the results are obtained through rigorous mathematical derivations, and are supported and validated by both numerical analysis and experimental tests. As proven considering many different configurations and scenarios, the main benefits of the proposed methodology are its generality and flexibility, which make it a viable alternative to standard modelling and control algorithms

    A Highly Reliable Propulsion System with Onboard Uninterruptible Power Supply for Train Application:Topology and Control

    Providing uninterrupted electricity service aboard the urban trains is of vital importance not only for reliable signaling and accurate traffic management but also for ensuring the safety of passengers and supplying emergency equipment such as lighting and signage systems. Hence, to alleviate power shortages caused by power transmission failures while the uninterruptible power supplies installed in the railway stations are not available, this paper suggests an innovative traction drive topology which is equipped by an onboard hybrid energy storage system for railway vehicles. Besides, to limit currents magnitudes and voltages variations of the feeder during train acceleration and to recuperate braking energy during train deceleration, an energy management strategy is presented. Moreover, a new optimal model predictive method is developed to control the currents of converters and storages as well as the speeds of the two open-end-windings permanent-magnet-synchronous-machines in the intended modular drive, under their constraints. Although to improve control dynamic performance, the control laws are designed as a set of piecewise affine functions from the control signals based on an offline procedure, the controller can still withstand real-time non-measurable disturbances. The effectiveness of proposed multifunctional propulsion topology and the feasibility of the designed controller are demonstrated by simulation and experimental results

    Electrical and magnetic faults diagnosis in permanent magnet synchronous motors

    Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are an alternative in critical applications where high-speed operation, compactness and high efficiency are required. In these applications it is highly desired to dispose of an on-line, reliable and cost-effective fault diagnosis method. Fault prediction and diagnosis allows increasing electric machines performance and raising their lifespan, thus reducing maintenance costs, while ensuring optimum reliability, safe operation and timely maintenance. Consequently this thesis is dedicated to the diagnosis of magnetic and electrical faults in PMSMs. As a first step, the behavior of a healthy machine is studied, and with this aim a new 2D finite element method (FEM) modelbased system for analyzing surface-mounted PSMSs with skewed rotor magnets is proposed. It is based on generating a geometric equivalent non-skewed permanent magnet distribution which accounts for the skewed distribution of the practical rotor, thus avoiding 3D geometries and greatly reducing the computational burden of the problem. To diagnose demagnetization faults, this thesis proposes an on-line methodology based on monitoring the zero-sequence voltage component (ZSVC). Attributes of the proposed method include simplicity, very low computational burden and high sensibility when compared with the well known stator currents analysis method. A simple expression of the ZSVC is deduced, which can be used as a fault indicator parameter. Furthermore, mechanical effects arising from demagnetization faults are studied. These effects are analyzed by means of FEM simulations and experimental tests based on direct measurements of the shaft trajectory through self-mixing interferometry. For that purpose two perpendicular laser diodes are used to measure displacements in both X and Y axes. Laser measurements proved that demagnetization faults may induce a quantifiable deviation of the rotor trajectory. In the case of electrical faults, this thesis studies the effects of resistive unbalance and stator winding inter-turn short-circuits in PMSMs and compares two methods for detecting and discriminating both faults. These methods are based on monitoring and analyzing the third harmonic component of the stator currents and the first harmonic of the ZSVC. Finally, the Vold-Kalman filtering order tracking algorithm is introduced and applied to extract selected harmonics related to magnetic and electrical faults when the machine operates under variable speed and different load levels. Furthermore, different fault indicators are proposed and their behavior is validated by means of experimental data. Both simulation and experimental results show the potential of the proposed methods to provide helpful and reliable data to carry out a simultaneous diagnosis of resistive unbalance and stator winding inter-turn faults
