    Block-matching motion estimation algorithms for video processing and compression: A brief overview

    Humanity created different methods for sharing information. One of the first forms of sharing information and knowledge were images. In the beginning, the process of sharing was relying on static appearances. With the invention of moving pictures by Eadweard Muybridge in the first part of 1870s, this exchange and sharing gained a new quality. Now it was possible to show and preserve motion too. Since that time, technology has changed rapidly. The latest discoveries and improvements from the point of view of technology use computer and IT technologies extensively. Today it is possible for everybody to create and record movies by themselves using affordable and convenient technological devices. Also the process of sharing evolved rapidly and become cheaper and cheaper. We are now able to record some movies and share them through the Internet or other carriers in real time or near real time. However, this also creates serious problems due to the huge volume of data to be sent through the data lines. Therefore, research has concentrated on methods to decrease the data volume without losing the quality. One way to do that is to create effective CODECs. A major drawback of moving pictures is the motion itself. CODECs have to minimize the size of videos without paying the price of quality losses but have also to reduce the computational complexity. Both of these requirements can be achieved with a solid knowledge of motion estimation among others. This paper gives a general overview and survey of some existing and important approaches without the claim of having a complete overview of the field

    A parallel H.264/SVC encoder for high definition video conferencing

    In this paper we present a video encoder specially developed and configured for high definition (HD) video conferencing. This video encoder brings together the following three requirements: H.264/Scalable Video Coding (SVC), parallel encoding on multicore platforms, and parallel-friendly rate control. With the first requirement, a minimum quality of service to every end-user receiver over Internet Protocol networks is guaranteed. With the second one, real-time execution is accomplished and, for this purpose, slice-level parallelism, for the main encoding loop, and block-level parallelism, for the upsampling and interpolation filtering processes, are combined. With the third one, a proper HD video content delivery under certain bit rate and end-to-end delay constraints is ensured. The experimental results prove that the proposed H.264/SVC video encoder is able to operate in real time over a wide range of target bit rates at the expense of reasonable losses in rate-distortion efficiency due to the frame partitioning into slices

    Surveillance centric coding

    PhDThe research work presented in this thesis focuses on the development of techniques specific to surveillance videos for efficient video compression with higher processing speed. The Scalable Video Coding (SVC) techniques are explored to achieve higher compression efficiency. The framework of SVC is modified to support Surveillance Centric Coding (SCC). Motion estimation techniques specific to surveillance videos are proposed in order to speed up the compression process of the SCC. The main contributions of the research work presented in this thesis are divided into two groups (i) Efficient Compression and (ii) Efficient Motion Estimation. The paradigm of Surveillance Centric Coding (SCC) is introduced, in which coding aims to achieve bit-rate optimisation and adaptation of surveillance videos for storing and transmission purposes. In the proposed approach the SCC encoder communicates with the Video Content Analysis (VCA) module that detects events of interest in video captured by the CCTV. Bit-rate optimisation and adaptation are achieved by exploiting the scalability properties of the employed codec. Time segments containing events relevant to surveillance application are encoded using high spatiotemporal resolution and quality while the irrelevant portions from the surveillance standpoint are encoded at low spatio-temporal resolution and / or quality. Thanks to the scalability of the resulting compressed bit-stream, additional bit-rate adaptation is possible; for instance for the transmission purposes. Experimental evaluation showed that significant reduction in bit-rate can be achieved by the proposed approach without loss of information relevant to surveillance applications. In addition to more optimal compression strategy, novel approaches to performing efficient motion estimation specific to surveillance videos are proposed and implemented with experimental results. A real-time background subtractor is used to detect the presence of any motion activity in the sequence. Different approaches for selective motion estimation, GOP based, Frame based and Block based, are implemented. In the former, motion estimation is performed for the whole group of pictures (GOP) only when a moving object is detected for any frame of the GOP. iii While for the Frame based approach; each frame is tested for the motion activity and consequently for selective motion estimation. The selective motion estimation approach is further explored at a lower level as Block based selective motion estimation. Experimental evaluation showed that significant reduction in computational complexity can be achieved by applying the proposed strategy. In addition to selective motion estimation, a tracker based motion estimation and fast full search using multiple reference frames has been proposed for the surveillance videos. Extensive testing on different surveillance videos shows benefits of application of proposed approaches to achieve the goals of the SCC

    La numĂ©risation des vidĂ©os existantes ainsi que le dĂ©veloppement explosif des services multimĂ©dia par des rĂ©seaux comme la diffusion de la tĂ©lĂ©vision numĂ©rique ou les communications mobiles ont produit une Ă©norme quantitĂ© de vidĂ©os compressĂ©es. Ceci nĂ©cessite des outils d’indexation et de navigation efficaces, mais une indexation avant l’encodage n’est pas habituelle. L’approche courante est le dĂ©codage complet des ces vidĂ©os pour ensuite crĂ©er des indexes. Ceci est trĂšs coĂ»teux et par consĂ©quent non rĂ©alisable en temps rĂ©el. De plus, des informations importantes comme le mouvement, perdus lors du dĂ©codage, sont reestimĂ©es bien que dĂ©jĂ  prĂ©sentes dans le flux comprimĂ©. Notre but dans cette thĂšse est donc la rĂ©utilisation des donnĂ©es dĂ©jĂ  prĂ©sents dans le flux comprimĂ© MPEG pour l’indexation et la navigation rapide. Plus prĂ©cisĂ©ment, nous extrayons des coefficients DC et des vecteurs de mouvement. Dans le cadre de cette thĂšse, nous nous sommes en particulier intĂ©ressĂ©s Ă  la construction de mosaĂŻques Ă  partir des images DC extraites des images I. Une mosaĂŻque est construite par recalage et fusion de toutes les images d’une sĂ©quence vidĂ©o dans un seul systĂšme de coordonnĂ©es. Ce dernier est en gĂ©nĂ©ral alignĂ© avec une des images de la sĂ©quence : l’image de rĂ©fĂ©rence. Il en rĂ©sulte une seule image qui donne une vue globale de la sĂ©quence. Ainsi, nous proposons dans cette thĂšse un systĂšme complet pour la construction des mosaĂŻques Ă  partir du flux MPEG-1/2 qui tient compte de diffĂ©rentes problĂšmes apparaissant dans des sĂ©quences vidĂ©o rĂ©eles, comme par exemple des objets en mouvment ou des changements d’éclairage. Une tĂąche essentielle pour la construction d’une mosaĂŻque est l’estimation de mouvement entre chaque image de la sĂ©quence et l’image de rĂ©fĂ©rence. Notre mĂ©thode se base sur une estimation robuste du mouvement global de la camĂ©ra Ă  partir des vecteurs de mouvement des images P. Cependant, le mouvement global de la camĂ©ra estimĂ© pour une image P peut ĂȘtre incorrect car il dĂ©pend fortement de la prĂ©cision des vecteurs encodĂ©s. Nous dĂ©tectons les images P concernĂ©es en tenant compte des coefficients DC de l’erreur encodĂ©e associĂ©e et proposons deux mĂ©thodes pour corriger ces mouvements. UnemosaĂŻque construite Ă  partir des images DC a une rĂ©solution trĂšs faible et souffre des effets d’aliasing dus Ă  la nature des images DC. Afin d’augmenter sa rĂ©solution et d’amĂ©liorer sa qualitĂ© visuelle, nous appliquons une mĂ©thode de super-rĂ©solution basĂ©e sur des rĂ©tro-projections itĂ©ratives. Les mĂ©thodes de super-rĂ©solution sont Ă©galement basĂ©es sur le recalage et la fusion des images d’une sĂ©quence vidĂ©o, mais sont accompagnĂ©es d’une restauration d’image. Dans ce cadre, nous avons dĂ©veloppĂ© une nouvellemĂ©thode d’estimation de flou dĂ» au mouvement de la camĂ©ra ainsi qu’une mĂ©thode correspondante de restauration spectrale. La restauration spectrale permet de traiter le flou globalement, mais, dans le cas des obvi jets ayant un mouvement indĂ©pendant du mouvement de la camĂ©ra, des flous locaux apparaissent. C’est pourquoi, nous proposons un nouvel algorithme de super-rĂ©solution dĂ©rivĂ© de la restauration spatiale itĂ©rative de Van Cittert et Jansson permettant de restaurer des flous locaux. En nous basant sur une segmentation d’objets en mouvement, nous restaurons sĂ©parĂ©ment lamosaĂŻque d’arriĂšre-plan et les objets de l’avant-plan. Nous avons adaptĂ© notre mĂ©thode d’estimation de flou en consĂ©quence. Dans une premier temps, nous avons appliquĂ© notre mĂ©thode Ă  la construction de rĂ©sumĂ© vidĂ©o avec pour l’objectif la navigation rapide par mosaĂŻques dans la vidĂ©o compressĂ©e. Puis, nous Ă©tablissions comment la rĂ©utilisation des rĂ©sultats intermĂ©diaires sert Ă  d’autres tĂąches d’indexation, notamment Ă  la dĂ©tection de changement de plan pour les images I et Ă  la caractĂ©risation dumouvement de la camĂ©ra. Enfin, nous avons explorĂ© le domaine de la rĂ©cupĂ©ration des erreurs de transmission. Notre approche consiste en construire une mosaĂŻque lors du dĂ©codage d’un plan ; en cas de perte de donnĂ©es, l’information manquante peut ĂȘtre dissimulĂ©e grace Ă  cette mosaĂŻque

    A three-frame digital image correlation (DIC) method for the measurement of small displacements and strains

    Digital image correlation (DIC) has become a well established approach for the calculation of full-ïŹeld displacement and strains within the ïŹeld of experimental mechanics. Since their introduction, DIC methods have been relying on only two images to measure the displacements and strains that materials undergo under load. It can be foreseen that the use of additional image information for the calculus of displacements and strains, although computationally more expensive, can positively impact DIC method accuracy in both ideal and challenging experimental conditions. Such accuracy improvements are especially important when measuring very small deformations, which still constitutes a great challenge: small displacements and strains translate into equally small digital image intensity changes on the material’s surface, which are aïŹ€ected by the digitization processes of the imaging hardware and by other image acquisition eïŹ€ects such as image noise. This paper proposes a new threeframe Newton-Raphson DIC method and evaluates it from the accuracy and speed standpoints. The method models the deformations that are to be measured under the assumption that the deformation occurs at approximately the same rate between each two consecutive images in the three image sequences that are employed. The aim is to investigate how the use of image data from more than two images impacts accuracy and what is the eïŹ€ect on the computational speed. The proposed method is compared with the classic two-frame Newton-Raphson method in three experiments. Two experiments rely on numerically deformed images that simulate heterogeneous deformations. The third experiment uses images from a real deformation experiment. Results indicate that although it is computationally more demanding, the three-frame method signiïŹcantly improves displacement and strain accuracy and is less sensitive to image noise

    Parallelism and the software-hardware interface in embedded systems

    This thesis by publications addresses issues in the architecture and microarchitecture of next generation, high performance streaming Systems-on-Chip through quantifying the most important forms of parallelism in current and emerging embedded system workloads. The work consists of three major research tracks, relating to data level parallelism, thread level parallelism and the software-hardware interface which together reflect the research interests of the author as they have been formed in the last nine years. Published works confirm that parallelism at the data level is widely accepted as the most important performance leverage for the efficient execution of embedded media and telecom applications and has been exploited via a number of approaches the most efficient being vectorlSIMD architectures. A further, complementary and substantial form of parallelism exists at the thread level but this has not been researched to the same extent in the context of embedded workloads. For the efficient execution of such applications, exploitation of both forms of parallelism is of paramount importance. This calls for a new architectural approach in the software-hardware interface as its rigidity, manifested in all desktop-based and the majority of embedded CPU's, directly affects the performance ofvectorized, threaded codes. The author advocates a holistic, mature approach where parallelism is extracted via automatic means while at the same time, the traditionally rigid hardware-software interface is optimized to match the temporal and spatial behaviour of the embedded workload.
