A software tool for the semi-automatic segmentation of architectural 3D models with semantic annotation and Web fruition
The thorough documentation of Cultural Heritage artifacts is a fundamental concern for management and preservation. In this context, the semantic segmentation and annotation of 3D models of historic buildings is an important modern topic. This work describes a software tool currently under development, for interactive and semi-automatic segmentation, characterization, and annotation of 3D models produced by photogrammetric surveys. The system includes some generic and well-known segmentation approaches, such as region growing and Locally Convex Connected Patches segmentation, but it also contains original code for specific semantic segmentation of parts of buildings, in particular straight stairs and circular-section columns. Furthermore, a method for automatic wall-surface characterization is devoted to rusticated-ashlar detection, in view of masonry-unit segmentation. The software is modular, so allowing easy expandability. It also has tools for data encoding into formats ready for model fruition by Web technologies. These results were partly obtained in collaboration with Corvallis SPA (Padua-Italy, http://www.corvallis.it)
Automatic Spot Addressing in cDNA Microarray Images
Complementary DNA (cDNA) microarrays are a powerful high throughput technology developed in the last decade allowing researchers to analyze the behaviour and interaction of thousands of genes simultaneously.
The large amount of information provided by microarray images requires automatic techniques to develop accurate and ef cient processing. Each spot in the microarray contains the hybridization level of a single gene.
One of the most important features of these images are the regularity and pseudo-periodicity implicit in the spot arrangement. In this paper, an automatic approach based on texture analysis techniques is proposed to localize spots in microarray images. The method estimates the displacement vectors which characterize the texture (i.e. the spot arrangement). This is achieved by means of applying the generalized Hough transform on the 2D autocorrelation function previously segmented via morphological operations. The obtained displacement vectors are used to generate a grid template which is matched to the original image. The root mean square error between the estimated locations and the ones computed via a semiautomatic tool is computed to evaluate the accuracy of the process. The method yields promising results with low errors.V Workshop de Computación Gráfica, Imágenes Y VisualizaciónRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

As image data is amassed ever more effortlessly, building efficient systems for searching and browsing of image databases becomes increasingly urgent. We provide an overview of the current state-of-the art by taking a tour along the entir
Variable illumination and invariant features for detecting and classifying varnish defects
This work presents a method to detect and classify varnish defects on wood surfaces. Since these defects are only partially visible under certain illumination directions, one image doesn\u27t provide enough information for a recognition task. A classification requires inspecting the surface under different illumination directions, which results in image series. The information is distributed along this series and can be extracted by merging the knowledge about the defect shape and light direction
A Hybrid Neural Network Architecture for Texture Analysis in Digital Image Processing Applications
A new hybrid neural network model capable of texture analysis in a digital image processing environment is presented in this thesis. This model is constructed from two different types of neural network, self-organisation and back-propagation. Along with a brief resume of digital image processing concepts, an introduction to neural networks is provided. This contains appropriate documentation of the neural networks and test evidence is also presented to highlight the relative strengths and weaknesses of both neural networks. The hybrid neural network is proposed from this evidence along with methods of training and operation. This is supported by practical examples of the system's operation with digital images. Through this process two modes of operation are explored, classification and segmentation of texture content within images.
Some common methods of texture analysis are also documented, with spatial grey level dependence matrices being chosen to act as a feature generator for classification by a back-propagation neural network, this provides a benchmark to assess the performance of the hybrid neural network. This takes the form of descriptive comparison, pictorial results, and mathematical analysis when using aerial survey images.
Other novel approaches using the hybrid neural network are presented with concluding comments outlining the findings presented within this thesis
Texton finding and lattice creation for near-regular texture
A regular texture is formed from a regular congruent tiling of perceptually meaningful texture elements, also known as textons. If the tiling statistically deviates from regularity, either by texton structure, colour, or size, the texture is called near-regular. If we continue to perturb the tiling, the texture becomes stochastic. The set of possible textures that lie between regular and stochastic make up the texture spectrum: regular, near-regular, regular, near-stochastic, and stochastic. In this thesis we provide a solution to the problem of creating, from a near-regular texture, a lattice which defines the placement of textons. We divide the problem into two distinct sub-areas:
finding textons within an image, and lattice creation using both an ad-hoc method and a
graph-theoretic method. The problem of finding textons within an image is addressed using correlation. A texton selected by the user is correlated with the image and points of high correlation are extracted using non-maximal suppression. To extend this framework to irregular textures, we present early results on the use of feature space during correlation. We also present a method of correcting for a specific type of error in the texton finding result using frequency-space analysis. Given texton locations, we provide two methods of creating a lattice. The ad-hoc method is able to
create a lattice in spite of inconsistencies in the texton locating data. However, as texture
becomes irregular the ad-hoc lattice construction method fails to correctly connect textons. To
overcome this failure we adapt methods of creating proximity graphs, which join two textons whose neighbourhoods satisfy certain criteria, to our problem. The proximity graphs are parameterized for selection of the most appropriate graph choice for a given texture, solving the general lattice construction problem given correct texton locations. In the output of the algorithm, centres of textons will be connected by edges in the lattice following the structure of texton placement within the input image. More precisely, for a texture T, we create a graph G = (V,E) dependent on T, where V is a set of texton centres, and E ={(v_i, v_j)} is a set of edges, where v_i, v_j are in V. Each edge e in E connects texton centre v in V to its most perceptually sensible neighbours
Extracting periodicity of a regular texture based on autocorrelation functions
[[abstract]]A new approach to extracting periodicity of a regular texture based on autocorrelation functions is proposed in this paper. From the peaks in the autocorrelation function of an image, the displacement vectors and texture primitives in the image can be effectively determined. Moreover, the area of the extracted texture primitive is relatively small. This fact benefits in further processing of the image, such as data compression, feature extraction, and pattern analysis. The proposed approach needs no preprocessing, such as image thresholding or quantization, on the input image. However, it keeps tolerant to distortions in the texture, such as noises, intensity changes, and geometric variants. A synthesized texture with high regularity can be constructed by arranging the obtained texture primitives according to the displacement vectors. Experimental results support the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach
Mathematical methods of signal processing
The aim of this project is to present in a systematic way the more relevant mathematical methods of signal
processing, and to explore how they are applied to speech and image precessing. After explaining the more
common parts of a standard course in signal processing, we put special emphasis in two new tools that have
played a significant role in signal processing in the past few years: pattern theory and wavelet theory. Finally,
we use all these techniques to implement an algorithm that detects the wallpaper group of a plane mosaic
taking an image of it as input and an algorithm that returns the phoneme sequence of a speech signal.
The material in this memory can be grouped in two parts. The first part, consisting of the first six chapters,
deals with the theoretical foundation of signal processing. It also includes materials related to plane
symmetry groups. The second part, consisting of the last two chapters, is focussed on the applications
In diesem Zusammenhang
also minimierte Profiltäler, und der Teigablösung, also maximierte Profilspitzen,
konfliktfrei kombinieren.
