    Constructive formal methods and protocol standardization

    This research is part of the NWO project "Improving the Quality of Protocol Standards". In this project we have cooperated with industrial standardization committees that are developing protocol standards. Thus we have contributed to these international standards, and we have generated relevant research questions in the field of formal methods. The first part of this thesis is related to the ISO/IEEE 1073.2 standard, which addresses medical device communication. The protocols in this standard were developed from a couple of MSC scenarios that describe typical intended behavior. Upon synthesizing a protocol from such scenarios, interference between these scenarios may be introduced, which leads to undesired behaviors. This is called the realizability problem. To address the realizability problem, we have introduced a formal framework that is based on partial orders. In this way the problem that causes the interference can be clearly pointed out. We have provided a complete characterization of realizability criteria that can be used to determine whether interference problems are to be expected. Moreover, we have provided a new constructive approach to solve the undesired interference in practical situations. These techniques have been used to improve the protocol standard under consideration. The second part of this thesis is related to the IEEE 1394.1-2004 standard, which addresses High Performance Serial Bus Bridges. This is an extension of the IEEE 1394-1995 standard, also known as FireWire. The development of the distributed spanning tree algorithm turned out to be a serious problem. To address this problem, we have first developed and proposed a much simpler algorithm. We have also studied the algorithm proposed by the developers of the standard, namely by formally reconstructing a version of it, starting from the specification. Such a constructive approach to verification and analysis uses mathematical techniques, or formal methods, to reveal the essential mechanisms that play a role in the algorithm. We have shown the need for different levels of abstraction, and we have illustrated that the algorithm is in fact distributed at two levels. These techniques are usually applied manually, but we have also developed an approach to automate parts of it using state-of-the-art theorem provers

    Distributed, end-to-end verifiable, and privacy-preserving internet voting systems

    We present the D-DEMOS suite of distributed, privacy-preserving, and end-to-end verifiable e-voting systems; one completely asynchronous and one with minimal timing assumptions but better performance. Their distributed voting operation is human verifiable; a voter can vote over the web, using an unsafe web client stack, without sacrificing her privacy, and get recorded-as-cast assurance. Additionally, a voter can outsource election auditing to third parties, still without sacrificing privacy. We provide a model and security analysis of the systems, implement prototypes of the complete systems, measure their performance experimentally, demonstrate their ability to handle large-scale elections, and demonstrate the performance trade-offs between the two versions

    Privacy Preserving Cryptographic Protocols for Secure Heterogeneous Networks

    Disertační práce se zabývá kryptografickými protokoly poskytující ochranu soukromí, které jsou určeny pro zabezpečení komunikačních a informačních systémů tvořících heterogenní sítě. Práce se zaměřuje především na možnosti využití nekonvenčních kryptografických prostředků, které poskytují rozšířené bezpečnostní požadavky, jako je například ochrana soukromí uživatelů komunikačního systému. V práci je stanovena výpočetní náročnost kryptografických a matematických primitiv na různých zařízeních, které se podílí na zabezpečení heterogenní sítě. Hlavní cíle práce se zaměřují na návrh pokročilých kryptografických protokolů poskytujících ochranu soukromí. V práci jsou navrženy celkově tři protokoly, které využívají skupinových podpisů založených na bilineárním párování pro zajištění ochrany soukromí uživatelů. Tyto navržené protokoly zajišťují ochranu soukromí a nepopiratelnost po celou dobu datové komunikace spolu s autentizací a integritou přenášených zpráv. Pro navýšení výkonnosti navržených protokolů je využito optimalizačních technik, např. dávkového ověřování, tak aby protokoly byly praktické i pro heterogenní sítě.The dissertation thesis deals with privacy-preserving cryptographic protocols for secure communication and information systems forming heterogeneous networks. The thesis focuses on the possibilities of using non-conventional cryptographic primitives that provide enhanced security features, such as the protection of user privacy in communication systems. In the dissertation, the performance of cryptographic and mathematic primitives on various devices that participate in the security of heterogeneous networks is evaluated. The main objectives of the thesis focus on the design of advanced privacy-preserving cryptographic protocols. There are three designed protocols which use pairing-based group signatures to ensure user privacy. These proposals ensure the protection of user privacy together with the authentication, integrity and non-repudiation of transmitted messages during communication. The protocols employ the optimization techniques such as batch verification to increase their performance and become more practical in heterogeneous networks.

    Privacy enhancing technologies : protocol verification, implementation and specification

    In this thesis, we present novel methods for verifying, implementing and specifying protocols. In particular, we focus properties modeling data protection and the protection of privacy. In the first part of the thesis, the author introduces protocol verification and presents a model for verification that encompasses so-called Zero-Knowledge (ZK) proofs. These ZK proofs are a cryptographic primitive that is particularly suited for hiding information and hence serves the protection of privacy. The here presented model gives a list of criteria which allows the transfer of verification results from the model to the implementation if the criteria are met by the implementation. In particular, the criteria are less demanding than the ones of previous work regarding ZK proofs. The second part of the thesis contributes to the area of protocol implementations. Hereby, ZK proofs are used in order to improve multi-party computations. The third and last part of the thesis explains a novel approach for specifying data protection policies. Instead of relying on policies, this approach relies on actual legislation. The advantage of relying on legislation is that often a fair balancing is introduced which is typically not contained in regulations or policies.In dieser Arbeit werden neue Methoden zur Verifikation, Implementierung und Spezifikation im von Protokollen vorgestellt. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf Datenschutz-Eigenschaften und dem Schutz der Privatsph¨are. Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit geht der Author auf die Protokoll- Verifikation ein und stellt ein Modell zur Verifikation vor, dass sogenannte Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Beweise enth¨alt. Diese ZK Beweise sind ein kryptographisches primitiv, dass insbesondere zum Verstecken von Informationen geeignet ist und somit zum Schutz der Privatsph¨are dient. Das hier vorgestellte Modell gibt eine Liste von Kriterien, welche eine Implementierung der genutzten kryptographischen Primitive erf¨ullen muss, damit die verifikationen im Modell sich auf Implementierungen ¨ubertragen lassen. In Bezug auf ZK Beweise sind diese Kriterien sch¨acher als die vorangegangener Arbeiten. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit wendet sich der Implementierung von Protokollen zu. Hierbei werden dann ZK Beweise verwendet um sichere Mehrparteienberechnungen zu verbessern. Im dritten und letzten Teil der Arbeit wird eine neuartige Art der Spezifikation von Datenschutz-Richtlinien erl¨autert. Diese geht nicht von Richtlinien aus, sondern von der Rechtsprechung. Der Vorteil ist, dass in der Rechtsprechung konkrete Abw¨agungen getroffen werden, die Gesetze und Richtlinien nicht enthalten

    Integration of analysis techniques in security and fault-tolerance

    This thesis focuses on the study of integration of formal methodologies in security protocol analysis and fault-tolerance analysis. The research is developed in two different directions: interdisciplinary and intra-disciplinary. In the former, we look for a beneficial interaction between strategies of analysis in security protocols and fault-tolerance; in the latter, we search for connections among different approaches of analysis within the security area.
