“And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth,” Genesis 1:28, ESV. Made to Rule by Servin

The Monsters at the End of This Book( Introduction and Chapter 1 of A Glorious Dark: Finding Hope in the Tension Between Belief and Experience)

Excerpt: When I was a kid, a free-flowing river meandered its way through my backyard. My family loved rivers. We always lived near one. Growing up in dark, drippy, soulful Oregon winters, I’d watch the death of January conquer, year after year, the once free-flowing and wild Willamette River. By mid-month, during the muffled silence of cold, a deep, bone-chilling freeze would halt every living thing upon the face of our backyard. The Willamette fell victim with the rest. The river looked dead—frozen dead. But the frozen river wasn’t really dead. My old man would tell me that underneath that cold, dark, seemingly dead surface was a wild, powerful, primal flow that untrained eyes couldn’t imagine. You had to believe it was alive. Rushing waves lurked underneath the stillness of death, as powerful as ever. Dad knew it was there, below the surface. I believed it was there too

Classification, Biodiversity and Conservation of Marine Commercial Crabs of India

One of the best known and most intensely studied groups is the true crabs of the infraorder Brachyura. Brachyuran crabs belong to the Order Decapoda, the most diverse group of crustaceans alive today (Ng et al., 2008). The known size of crabs now ranges from a maximum leg span of approximately 4 m in the giant Japanese spider crab Macrocheira kaempferi and a maximum carapace width of 46 cm in the giant Tasmanian crab Pseudocarcinus gigas to a minimum of 1.5 mm across the carapace for a mature ovigerous female pinnotherid, Nannotheres moorei, the smallest known species of crab. Every living thing is classified into one of the three domains

Looking Further and Deeper into Environmental Protection, Regulation and Policy Using Environmental DNA (eDNA)

    Get PDF
DNA sequencing technologies are transforming how environments are monitored. In this article, we pose the question: is environmental DNA (eDNA) the tool that Aotearoa New Zealand needs, but does not yet realise it does? The step change with eDNA is that genetic ‘breadcrumbs’ left behind in the environment can identify every living thing, from microbes to mammals, thus providing a more nuanced and holistic lens on ecosystems. Using eDNA, we can explore the biological networks that underpin healthy environments. Here we explore whether changes in policy setting, guidance, or pathways for uptake of eDNA are needed. Can eDNA help us make better decisions, inform policy and protections, track restoration, and act as a deterrent to reduce environmental harm

Animals and the Law: A Selected Bibliography

    Get PDF
The literature of Anglo-American law regarding animals is almost totally devoted to the pragmatic study of the nature and extent of ownership of animals and the rights and responsibilities arising therefrom. This narrow view of the bond between men and animals is eloquently expressed in the confident and innocent assertion of William Blackstone that In the beginning of the world we are informed by holy writ, the all bountiful creator gave to man dominion over all the earth, and over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth. This is the only true and solid foundation of man\u27s dominion over external things. The following bibliography includes English language publications in the form of monographs and treatises

The Continuous Movement of Water and Time

Water has a relationship with every living thing on earth, and represents a force that both gives life and can eliminate it. In my work, I use water, color, and the figure to explore the sublime, death and decay, the passage of time, and overwhelming emotions. I have looked at my work in relation to Marilyn Minter’s photography, Mark Rothko’s color field paintings, Julie Evans’ and Henri Matisse’s cut-out works, Sam Gilliam’s continuously changing canvas installations, and Ekaterina Smirnova’s investigation into the meaning of an individual’s place in the universe. By seeing the different ways in which these artists and myself have dealt with these different facets, I hope to gain a better understand of the different ways in which humans process difficult concepts such as these, which I can then use in my future art therapy practice

Water is the source of life. Every living thing depends on the presence of water. Without water, life will never exist. Physically, water is needed by every of the absolute water has its own meaning. Man pulls out spiritual meaning of the local cultures value especially about Wayang story. The meaning is Peziarahan Bima Mencari Air Kehidupan Dewaruci. Bima is a fictional character in Wayang culture that developed in Java. Bima is a symbol of man who longs to live with God. Bima integrates his existence and essence of his life. Bima is a true image of all human pilgrimage in the world. Bima is a symbol of individuation to achieve the perfection of life. Perfection was reflected in Acts Dewaruci. Bima met Dewaruci, and received Eternal Life Water (Words of Salvation). Finally, Bima can live happily in manunggaling kawula Gusti

MANFAAT SUPLEMENTASI VITAMIN C PADA KESEHATAN TERNAK RUMINANSIA (Benefits of Vitamin C Supplementation on Ruminants Health)

    Get PDF
Vitamin C is an important water-soluble vitamin that is needed by every living thing. Domestic animals, including ruminants, were capable of synthesizing ascorbic acid, primarily in the liver, therefore, vitamin C is not considered to be an essential nutrient for healthy ruminants. Nevertheless, in ruminants, vitamin C is important in biochemical reactions involving collagen cross-linking, hydroxylation of proline and lysine, and steroid and bile acid synthesis. However, in fact, Dietary vitamin C is extensively degraded in the rumen. Although ruminants are able to synthesize vitamin C, when ruminants experience stress and suffer from various diseases, vitamin C supplementation from outside is still needed to restore their health condition. Therefore, vitamin C supplements still have great benefits for optimizing their health conditions. This review discusses the effects of vitamin C and its supplementation on the health of ruminants

Employee Perception of Brand Value in the Jewelry Industry

    Get PDF
This study aims to discuss the brand value proposed by John Hardy and, as jewelryretail, it can be seen from each of these brand values. This study uses a qualitativemethod with the interview technique or open questionnaire for gaining all employeesin the sales department of John Hardy, Indonesia. The data were collected andanalyzed by first reducing and presenting the data and finally concluding.Triangulation was also done to get the trustworthiness (data validity) so that it isexpected to provide valid data for research. It shows that community, artisanship, and sustainability are much linked to the brand, and it is also tied together as well as being implemented. For that reason, John Hardy is required to know how to deliver the information correctly to the customer, mention the company's history, the value, and DNA (deoxyribonu-cleic acid) as the individual blueprint of every living thing, which makes it unique in the company

Prediction of drinking water quality using back-propagation neural network / Wan Radziah Wan Abdul Rahim

Water is very important in our daily life. Without safety water every living thing in this planet will die. People can survive 7 to 10 days without foods but can survive 1 to 3 days without water ("National Ag Safety Database", 2002). Human bodies consist of 70% of water. This statement proved that water is very important element in this planet to make sure every living thing can continue their life. Nowadays, people are concerned about water sources such as from fresh water, ground water and river for drink. Some of them are not safe and does not achieve standard of safe and healthy to drink and use. The purposed of this project is to solve this problem by predict the drinking water quality using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). It is focus on pH, manganese, iron and turbidity of water. A Back-propagation neural network is used in this project and it is fully develop using MATLAB. With the development of drinking water quality prediction, it provides the result either the water quality or not based on the trained water data. Within this result, the water company can improved the drinking water quality level to make sure the consumer get the healthy water
