Womenʼs Friendship in Exile: Healing in the Epistolary Correspondence Between Zenobia Camprubí and Pilar de Zubiaurre.

The epistolary correspondence between the Spanish intellectuals Zenobia Camprubi (1887-1956) and Pilar de Zubiaurre (1884- 1970) from October 1938 to August 1956 reveals a long friendship that began in Madrid in the 1910S and continued during the exile that they, as supporters of the democratic Second Republic, both suffered after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the victory of dictator Francisco Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975. During exile Camprubi writes to Zubiaurre from the United States, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, while Zubiaurre responds from Mexico, where she lived the last thirty years of her life. Out of their mutual correspondence fifteen letters written by Camprubi are held in the Archives of the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao, Spain, while five letters written by Zubiaurre are kept in the Zenobia-Juan Ram6n Jimenez Foundation, in Huelva, Spain.1 The importance of these letters is that they illustrate the significant role that women played in exile as transmitters of information and preservers of the national culture in the communities of Spanish Republican exiles. In this chapter I argue that both Camprubi and Zubiaurre experienced a suffering and nostalgic exile and used their epistolary correspondence as a means to cope with it. Exchanging letters contributed to healing their exilic pain in three main ways: by giving and receiving information, by asking for and offering help, and by finding comfort and consolation in difficult times. Thus, both intellectuals conveyed to each other the situation of numerous mutual friends and the news they received from Spain. Letters also allowed them to ask favors of each other, for instance, offering advice on several issues and conveying messages to common friends. Finally, Camprubi and Zubiaurre found in each other\u27s letters the affection needed in hard times, as shown in the references to the importance of their friendship over others. Thus, these letters demonstrate how exiled women supported each other while being away from home and found solace through their mutual friendship

Cronotopos y autobiografía epistolar como mecanismos de autorreflexión en Memoria por correspondencia, de Emma Reyes

En el libro Memoria por correspondencia (2012), la artista plástica Emma Reyes, cuenta una historia que inicia en sus primeros recuerdos y que va hasta sus 20 años, usando el género de la autobiografía epistolar -- Este análisis busca, tomando como base la teoría de cronotopos de Mijail Bajtin y del mismo género literario, encontrar y describir los diversos elementos que ayudan a dar cuenta del proceso de autorreflexión experimentado por la autora -- Así, se hallarán y describirán las herramientas literarias que ejecuta Reyes en los tres cronotopos hallados: el del encierro, el del desamparo y el del cuarto con objetos, y los elementos del doble pacto epistolar (Lejuene y Guillén) -- Apoyada entonces en la construcción y contenido de los cronotopos y en la elección de la autobiografía epistolar, la narradora profundiza la experiencia de lectura gracias a su mirada de artista plástica - pintura, dibujos y murales –, en un proceso, más que autobiográfico, autorreflexiv

Els manuals epistolars impresos a Catalunya (segles XVI, XVII i XVIII)

Aquest article té com a objectiu principal identificar els manuals epistolars impresos a Catalunya els segles XVI, XVII i XVIII, i donar a conèixer els preceptes de teoria epistolar continguts a les seves pàgines. A banda de descriure les característiques formals i els temes que tractaven aquest tipus d'obres, l'autora es fixa en les normes i els models proposats als manuals com a guia per a l'escriptura d'una carta. Aquest examen bibliogràfic contribueix a dibuixar el curs d'una part de l'activitat editorial catalana i a augmentar la informació sobre la teoria epistolar modernista.El presente artículo tiene como principal objetivo identificar los manuales epistolares impresos en Cataluña durante los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII, y dar a conocer los preceptos de teoría epistolar contenidos en sus páginas. Además de describir las características formales y los temas de que trataban ese tipo de obras, la autora se fija en las normas y los modelos propuestos en los manuales como guía para la escritura de una carta. Dicho examen bibliográfico contribuye a dibujar el curso de una parte de la actividad editorial catalana y a aumentar la información sobre la teoría epistolar modernista.This paper's main objective is to identify the epistolary manuals printed in Catalonia during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and to publicize the correspondence theory precepts contained in their pages. In addition to describing the formal features and issues that deal with these kind of works, the author focuses on at the rules and models proposed in those manuals a guides for writing letters. This bibliographical review helps to draw the course of a part of the Catalan publishing activity and increase our understanding of the modernist correspondence theory

Latín y romance en Pedro Juan Núñez: su uso en la enseñanza del arte epistolar

La teoría del arte epistolar de Pedro Juan Núñez se halla impresa en su Ratio breuis et expedita conscribendi genera epistolarum illustriora. Ex dictatis P. Iohan. Nunnesii Valentini (Zaragoza, 1596 y Valencia, 1607). En su obra manuscrita, sin embargo, dedica una mayor atención y extensión tanto a la teoría como a los modelos, los ejercicios, los ejemplos y el comentario de epístolas de Cicerón. Una característica del arte epistolar de Núñez consiste en el uso del romance, con mucha mayor profusión que en su obra retórica, donde prácticamente no existe. Por lo tanto pretendemos esclarecer las razones para este uso y su función en la enseñanza del arte epistolar en este autor.The epistolary art theory of Pedro Juan Nunez is printed on its Ratio breuis et expedita conscribendi genera epistolarum illustriora. Ex dictatis P. Iohan. Nunnesii Valentini (Zaragoza, 1596, and Valencia, 1607). In his manuscripts, however, devotes more attention and spread both the theory and models, exercises, examples and commentary on Cicero's epistles. A feature of the epistolary art of Núñez is the use of romance language, with much greater profusion than in his Rhetoric, which is almost nonexistent. Therefore we intend to clarify the reasons for this use and its role in teaching the art of letter writing in this author
