    Enabling global experiments with interactive reconfiguration and steering by multiple users

    In global scientific experiments with collaborative scenarios involving multinational teams there are big challenges related to data access, namely data movements are precluded to other regions or Clouds due to the constraints on latency costs, data privacy and data ownership. Furthermore, each site is processing local data sets using specialized algorithms and producing intermediate results that are helpful as inputs to applications running on remote sites. This paper shows how to model such collaborative scenarios as a scientific workflow implemented with AWARD (Autonomic Workflow Activities Reconfigurable and Dynamic), a decentralized framework offering a feasible solution to run the workflow activities on distributed data centers in different regions without the need of large data movements. The AWARD workflow activities are independently monitored and dynamically reconfigured and steering by different users, namely by hot-swapping the algorithms to enhance the computation results or by changing the workflow structure to support feedback dependencies where an activity receives feedback output from a successor activity.     A Model for Scientific Workflows with Parallel and Distributed Computing

    In the last decade we witnessed an immense evolution of the computing infrastructures in terms of processing, storage and communication. On one hand, developments in hardware architectures have made it possible to run multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine. On the other hand, the increase of the available network communication bandwidth has enabled the widespread use of distributed computing infrastructures, for example based on clusters, grids and clouds. The above factors enabled different scientific communities to aim for the development and implementation of complex scientific applications possibly involving large amounts of data. However, due to their structural complexity, these applications require decomposition models to allow multiple tasks running in parallel and distributed environments. The scientific workflow concept arises naturally as a way to model applications composed of multiple activities. In fact, in the past decades many initiatives have been undertaken to model application development using the workflow paradigm, both in the business and in scientific domains. However, despite such intensive efforts, current scientific workflow systems and tools still have limitations, which pose difficulties to the development of emerging large-scale, distributed and dynamic applications. This dissertation proposes the AWARD model for scientific workflows with parallel and distributed computing. AWARD is an acronym for Autonomic Workflow Activities Reconfigurable and Dynamic. The AWARD model has the following main characteristics. It is based on a decentralized execution control model where multiple autonomic workflow activities interact by exchanging tokens through input and output ports. The activities can be executed separately in diverse computing environments, such as in a single computer or on multiple virtual machines running on distributed infrastructures, such as clusters and clouds. It provides basic workflow patterns for parallel and distributed application decomposition and other useful patterns supporting feedback loops and load balancing. The model is suitable to express applications based on a finite or infinite number of iterations, thus allowing to model long-running workflows, which are typical in scientific experimention. A distintive contribution of the AWARD model is the support for dynamic reconfiguration of long-running workflows. A dynamic reconfiguration allows to modify the structure of the workflow, for example, to introduce new activities, modify the connections between activity input and output ports. The activity behavior can also be modified, for example, by dynamically replacing the activity algorithm. In addition to the proposal of a new workflow model, this dissertation presents the implementation of a fully functional software architecture that supports the AWARD model. The implemented prototype was used to validate and refine the model across multiple workflow scenarios whose usefulness has been demonstrated in practice clearly, through experimental results, demonstrating the advantages of the major characteristics and contributions of the AWARD model. The implemented prototype was also used to develop application cases, such as a workflow to support the implementation of the MapReduce model and a workflow to support a text mining application developed by an external user. The extensive experimental work confirmed the adequacy of the AWARD model and its implementation for developing applications that exploit parallelism and distribution using the scientific workflows paradigm

    Survey and Analysis of Production Distributed Computing Infrastructures

    This report has two objectives. First, we describe a set of the production distributed infrastructures currently available, so that the reader has a basic understanding of them. This includes explaining why each infrastructure was created and made available and how it has succeeded and failed. The set is not complete, but we believe it is representative. Second, we describe the infrastructures in terms of their use, which is a combination of how they were designed to be used and how users have found ways to use them. Applications are often designed and created with specific infrastructures in mind, with both an appreciation of the existing capabilities provided by those infrastructures and an anticipation of their future capabilities. Here, the infrastructures we discuss were often designed and created with specific applications in mind, or at least specific types of applications. The reader should understand how the interplay between the infrastructure providers and the users leads to such usages, which we call usage modalities. These usage modalities are really abstractions that exist between the infrastructures and the applications; they influence the infrastructures by representing the applications, and they influence the ap- plications by representing the infrastructures

    Integrated Reconfigurable Autonomous Architecture System

    Advances in state-of-the-art architectural robotics and artificially intelligent design algorithms have the potential not only to transform how we design and build architecture, but to fundamentally change our relationship to the built environment. This system is situated within a larger body of research related to embedding autonomous agency directly into the built environment through the linkage of AI, computation, and robotics. It challenges the traditional separation between digital design and physical construction through the development of an autonomous architecture with an adaptive lifecycle. Integrated Reconfigurable Autonomous Architecture System (IRAAS) is composed of three components: 1) an interactive platform for user and environmental data input, 2) an agent-based generative space planning algorithm with deep reinforcement learning for continuous spatial adaptation, 3) a distributed robotic material system with bi-directional cyber-physical control protocols for simultaneous state alignment. The generative algorithm is a multi-agent system trained using deep reinforcement learning to learn adaptive policies for adjusting the scales, shapes, and relational organization of spatial volumes by processing changes in the environment and user requirements. The robotic material system was designed with a symbiotic relationship between active and passive modular components. Distributed robots slide their bodies on tracks built into passive blocks that enable their locomotion while utilizing a locking and unlocking system to reconfigure the assemblages they move across. The three subsystems have been developed in relation to each other to consider both the constraints of the AI-driven design algorithm and the robotic material system, enabling intelligent spatial adaptation with a continuous feedback chain

    SDN/NFV-enabled satellite communications networks: opportunities, scenarios and challenges

    In the context of next generation 5G networks, the satellite industry is clearly committed to revisit and revamp the role of satellite communications. As major drivers in the evolution of (terrestrial) fixed and mobile networks, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) technologies are also being positioned as central technology enablers towards improved and more flexible integration of satellite and terrestrial segments, providing satellite network further service innovation and business agility by advanced network resources management techniques. Through the analysis of scenarios and use cases, this paper provides a description of the benefits that SDN/NFV technologies can bring into satellite communications towards 5G. Three scenarios are presented and analysed to delineate different potential improvement areas pursued through the introduction of SDN/NFV technologies in the satellite ground segment domain.     Social Sustainability: A design research approach to sustainable development

    While issues such as clean production and energy efficiency are still central in sustainable development discourse, attention is increasingly on patterns of consumption at multiple levels in society. This opens new opportunities and responsibilities for design research, as we shift from a focus on product lifecycles to people’s lifestyles. It also requires further understanding the ‘social sustainability’ aspects of the environment and development, including the complexity of problematics characterized by uncertainties, contradictions and controversies. In response, we propose a programmatic approach, in which a tentative assemblage of theoretical and experimental strategies frame a common ground for a collaborative and practice-led inquiry. We present a design research program based on two propositions: socio-cultural practices are the basic unit for design, and; transitions, and transition management, are the basic points of design intervention. Rather than affirming the status quo or the prevailing discourse, we argue for design research as a ‘critical practice’, in which cultural diversity, non-humans and multiple futures are considered

    This research believes that understanding the relationship between Interactive Architecture and the principles of biology will become a mainstream research area in future architectural design. Aiming towards achieving the goal of “making architecture as organic bodies”, almost all the current digital techniques in architectural design are executed using computational simulation: digital fabrication technologies and physical computing. Based on its’ main biological inspirations, Evolutionary Development Biology (Evo-Devo), this research intends to propose a novel bio-inspired design thinking wherein architecture should become analogs to the growing process of living organisms (Figure 6.1). Instead of being born from static optimization results most of the architecture seems content at aiming for nowadays, this research is looking towards designing dynamic architectural bodies which can adapt to the constantly changing environments and are thus seeking optimization in real-time. In other words, architecture should come “alive” as a living creature in order to actively optimize itself with respect to dynamic environmental conditions and user behavior’ requirements in real-time. Following the notion of “architecture as organic bodies”, six major topics were derived from the publication of “New Wombs: Electric Bodies and Architectural Disorders” (Palumbo, 2000). These topics are aimed at initiating critical discussions between body and space, which, are used here to re-interpret six main traits of being an interactive architecture: Dis-measurement, Uprooting, Fluidity, Visceral Nature, Virtuality, and Sensitivity. These six topics merge diverse key points from aforementioned chapters including outlining the vision of active interacting architecture, the transformation of human bodies under digital culture, the profound biological inspiration from Evo-Devo and the fundamental componential notion of swarm, which leads to the ultimate notion of embodying organic body-like interactive Bio-architecture. Dis-measurement: Acknowledging the premise of “architecture (technology) as an extension of human bodies” proposed by Marshall McLuhan (McLuhan, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, 1964), it is, still difficult to explicitly define the boundary of a space, especially in the context of a borderless cyberspace (the Internet). Space in such a context expands more than ever before and thus makes traditional measurements techniques unfeasible. With cyberspace, people can be virtually present in different places at the same time, thus breaking existing physical boundaries of a space. From another point of view, space as an extension of our bodies constantly adapting to environmental conditions and user demands, creates an intimate linkage between physical bodies and spatial bodies. Interaction in such instances can be seen from a micro-scale: between biological cells and intelligent architectural components to the macro-scale: between physical organic bodies and spatial bodies/architectural space. Uprooting: Apart from further extending the “Dis-measurement” idea by directly plugging into cyberspace (the Internet), “Uprooting” is also interpreted as adaptation devoid of any site/location constraints. In other words, the idea of “Uprooting” implies, generating an architecture that can adjust/modify in accordance with its existing surroundings by interactions between its smallest intelligent components like cells in a body searching for dynamic equilibrium. In this case, architecture has no particular reason to be designed as “rooted” on sites. Fluidity: With the neural system inside the body, most of the messages can be transmitted, received and sent within less than a millionth of a second. To envision architecture as an information processor, which has abilities to react to dynamic environmental conditions and user demands, efficient information protocols must be built into such an organic architectural body to create seamless exterior/interior transformations. Visceral Nature: Visceral can be interpreted in the form of an embodied organ. This implies envisioning architecture in the form of a living-entity. It is no longer the case of mimicking a natural form and thus claiming a building to be organic, but rather instigates one to look deeper into the principles of a natural form’s morphogenesis and apply these to generate a truly organic space. Through the study of Evo-Devo, several principles will be applied to generate an interactive organic Bio-architecture. It is thus not an organic looking shape that matters, but the principles behind the shape, which matter. For instance, principles of self-organization, self-assembly, and self-adaptation, providing possibilities of making body-like architectures with multi-directional and multi-modal communications both inside out and outside in. An intelligent architecture, should “live” in the environment just as how the body lives with its’ Visceral Nature. Virtuality: It is impossible to talk about physical space without mentioning virtual space nowadays. From cyberspace, augmented reality to virtual reality, “Virtuality” is related to “interaction” since the beginning and has gradually become an inevitable aspect of our daily lives. In fact, virtual space has to still use constraints from the physical world to enhance experiential aspects. The ultimate goal of virtual reality here is not to end up with a VR helmet and keep constantly being stimulated by electronic messages, but to bring the physical to the virtual and in the process, attempt to search for a dynamic balance between the virtual and real by merging them together. With the assistance of virtual reality, novel unrealistic space can still be realized into creative tangible immersive and fascinating spaces, which, earlier was not possible. Sensitivity: The notion of “architecture is an extension of human bodies”, is crucial to embrace, if we consider enhancing the sensing abilities of the space as a body not only externally but also internally. In a digital space, active sensing can be achieved by attaching specific devices. In an interactive space, like an organic body, the sensing capabilities of the space have to be fast, accurate, intuitive, and predictive. The sensing system should thus not only work externally to sense the surrounding environment but also internally in order to fulfill the users’ demands in time. With such a connection between human bodies and spatial bodies, it should become relatively understandable for the space to know the requirements of the users by means of hand gestures instead of verbal cues. The sensitivity, in this case, should rely on local information distribution as a bottom-up system rather than a top-down centralized demanding structure
