    Electromyogram (EMG) Driven System Based Virtual Reality for Prosthetic and Rehabilitation Devices

    The users of current prosthetic and rehabilitation devices are facing problems to adapt to their new hosts or not receiving any bio-feedback despite rehabilitation process and retraining, particularly when working with Electromyogram (EMG) signals. In characterizing virtual human limbs, as a potential prosthetic device in 3D virtual reality, patients are able to familiarize themselves with their new appendage and its capabilities in a virtual training environment or can see their movements intention. This paper presents a Virtual Reality (VR) based design and implementation of a below-shoulder 3D human arm capable of 10-class EMG based motions driven system of biomedical EMG signal. The method considers a signal classification output as potential control stimulus to drive the virtual prosthetic prototype. A hierarchical design methodology is adopted based on anatomical structure, congruent with Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) architecture. The resulting simulation is based on a portable, self-contained VR model implementation paired with an instrumental virtual control-select board capable of actuating any combinations of singular or paired kinematic 10-class EMG motions. The built model allows for multiple degree of freedom profiles as the classes can be activated independently or in conjunction with others allowing enhanced arm movement

    Towards electrodeless EMG linear envelope signal recording for myo-activated prostheses control

    After amputation, the residual muscles of the limb may function in a normal way, enabling the electromyogram (EMG) signals recorded from them to be used to drive a replacement limb. These replacement limbs are called myoelectric prosthesis. The prostheses that use EMG have always been the first choice for both clinicians and engineers. Unfortunately, due to the many drawbacks of EMG (e.g. skin preparation, electromagnetic interferences, high sample rate, etc.); researchers have aspired to find suitable alternatives. One proposes the dry-contact, low-cost sensor based on a force-sensitive resistor (FSR) as a valid alternative which instead of detecting electrical events, detects mechanical events of muscle. FSR sensor is placed on the skin through a hard, circular base to sense the muscle contraction and to acquire the signal. Similarly, to reduce the output drift (resistance) caused by FSR edges (creep) and to maintain the FSR sensitivity over a wide input force range, signal conditioning (Voltage output proportional to force) is implemented. This FSR signal acquired using FSR sensor can be used directly to replace the EMG linear envelope (an important control signal in prosthetics applications). To find the best FSR position(s) to replace a single EMG lead, the simultaneous recording of EMG and FSR output is performed. Three FSRs are placed directly over the EMG electrodes, in the middle of the targeted muscle and then the individual (FSR1, FSR2 and FSR3) and combination of FSR (e.g. FSR1+FSR2, FSR2-FSR3) is evaluated. The experiment is performed on a small sample of five volunteer subjects. The result shows a high correlation (up to 0.94) between FSR output and EMG linear envelope. Consequently, the usage of the best FSR sensor position shows the ability of electrode less FSR-LE to proportionally control the prosthesis (3-D claw). Furthermore, FSR can be used to develop a universal programmable muscle signal sensor that can be suitable to control the myo-activated prosthesis

    Sensor-Based Adaptive Control and Optimization of Lower-Limb Prosthesis.

    Recent developments in prosthetics have enabled the development of powered prosthetic ankles (PPA). The advent of such technologies drastically improved impaired gait by increasing balance and reducing metabolic energy consumption by providing net positive power. However, control challenges limit performance and feasibility of today’s devices. With addition of sensors and motors, PPA systems should continuously make control decisions and adapt the system by manipulating control parameters of the prostheses. There are multiple challenges in optimization and control of PPAs. A prominent challenge is the objective setup of the system and calibration parameters to fit each subject. Another is whether it is possible to detect changes in intention and terrain before prosthetic use and how the system should react and adapt to it. In the first part of this study, a model for energy expenditure was proposed using electromyogram (EMG) signals from the residual lower-limbs PPA users. The proposed model was optimized to minimize energy expenditure. Optimization was performed using a modified Nelder-Mead approach with a Latin Hypercube sampling. Results of the proposed method were compared to expert values and it was shown to be a feasible alternative for tuning in a shorter time. In the second part of the study, the control challenges regarding lack of adaptivity for PPAs was investigated. The current PPA system used is enhanced with impedance-controlled parameters that allow the system to provide different assistance. However, current systems are set to a fixed value and fail to acknowledge various terrain and intentions throughout the day. In this study, a pseudo-real-time adaptive control system was proposed to predict the changes in the gait and provide a smoother gait. The proposed control system used physiological, kinetic, and kinematic data and fused them to predict the change. The prediction was done using machine learning-based methods. Results of the study showed an accuracy of up to 89.7 percent for prediction of change for four different cases

    Towards Natural Control of Artificial Limbs

    The use of implantable electrodes has been long thought as the solution for a more natural control of artificial limbs, as these offer access to long-term stable and physiologically appropriate sources of control, as well as the possibility to elicit appropriate sensory feedback via neurostimulation. Although these ideas have been explored since the 1960’s, the lack of a long-term stable human-machine interface has prevented the utilization of even the simplest implanted electrodes in clinically viable limb prostheses.In this thesis, a novel human-machine interface for bidirectional communication between implanted electrodes and the artificial limb was developed and clinically implemented. The long-term stability was achieved via osseointegration, which has been shown to provide stable skeletal attachment. By enhancing this technology as a communication gateway, the longest clinical implementation of prosthetic control sourced by implanted electrodes has been achieved, as well as the first in modern times. The first recipient has used it uninterruptedly in daily and professional activities for over one year. Prosthetic control was found to improve in resolution while requiring less muscular effort, as well as to be resilient to motion artifacts, limb position, and environmental conditions.In order to support this work, the literature was reviewed in search of reliable and safe neuromuscular electrodes that could be immediately used in humans. Additional work was conducted to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and increase the amount of information retrievable from extraneural recordings. Different signal processing and pattern recognition algorithms were investigated and further developed towards real-time and simultaneous prediction of limb movements. These algorithms were used to demonstrate that higher functionality could be restored by intuitive control of distal joints, and that such control remains viable over time when using epimysial electrodes. Lastly, the long-term viability of direct nerve stimulation to produce intuitive sensory feedback was also demonstrated.The possibility to permanently and reliably access implanted electrodes, thus making them viable for prosthetic control, is potentially the main contribution of this work. Furthermore, the opportunity to chronically record and stimulate the neuromuscular system offers new venues for the prediction of complex limb motions and increased understanding of somatosensory perception. Therefore, the technology developed here, combining stable attachment with permanent and reliable human-machine communication, is considered by the author as a critical step towards more functional artificial limbs

    Serious Games Are Not Serious Enough for Myoelectric Prosthetics

    Serious games show a lot of potential for use in movement rehabilitation (eg, after a stroke, injury to the spinal cord, or limb loss). However, the nature of this research leads to diversity both in the background of the researchers and in the approaches of their investigation. Our close examination and categorization of virtual training software for upper limb prosthetic rehabilitation found that researchers typically followed one of two broad approaches: (1) focusing on the game design aspects to increase engagement and muscle training and (2) concentrating on an accurate representation of prosthetic training tasks, to induce task-specific skill transfer. Previous studies indicate muscle training alone does not lead to improved prosthetic control without a transfer-enabling task structure. However, the literature shows a recent surge in the number of game-based prosthetic training tools, which focus on engagement without heeding the importance of skill transfer. This influx appears to have been strongly influenced by the availability of both software and hardware, specifically the launch of a commercially available acquisition device and freely available high-profile game development engines.     Proceedings of the first workshop on Peripheral Machine Interfaces: going beyond traditional surface electromyography

    One of the hottest topics in rehabilitation robotics is that of proper control of prosthetic devices. Despite decades of research, the state of the art is dramatically behind the expectations. To shed light on this issue, in June, 2013 the first international workshop on Present and future of non-invasive PNS-Machine Interfaces was convened, hosted by the International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics. The keyword PNS-Machine Interface (PMI) has been selected to denote human-machine interfaces targeted at the limb-deficient, mainly upper-limb amputees, dealing with signals gathered from the peripheral nervous system (PNS) in a non-invasive way, that is, from the surface of the residuum.     A Transferable Adaptive Domain Adversarial Neural Network for Virtual Reality Augmented EMG-Based Gesture Recognition

    Within the field of electromyography-based (EMG) gesture recognition, disparities exist between the offline accuracy reported in the literature and the real-time usability of a classifier. This gap mainly stems from two factors: 1) The absence of a controller, making the data collected dissimilar to actual control. 2) The difficulty of including the four main dynamic factors (gesture intensity, limb position, electrode shift, and transient changes in the signal), as including their permutations drastically increases the amount of data to be recorded. Contrarily, online datasets are limited to the exact EMG-based controller used to record them, necessitating the recording of a new dataset for each control method or variant to be tested. Consequently, this paper proposes a new type of dataset to serve as an intermediate between offline and online datasets, by recording the data using a real-time experimental protocol. The protocol, performed in virtual reality, includes the four main dynamic factors and uses an EMG-independent controller to guide movements. This EMG-independent feedback ensures that the user is in-the-loop during recording, while enabling the resulting dynamic dataset to be used as an EMG-based benchmark. The dataset is comprised of 20 able-bodied participants completing three to four sessions over a period of 14 to 21 days. The ability of the dynamic dataset to serve as a benchmark is leveraged to evaluate the impact of different recalibration techniques for long-term (across-day) gesture recognition, including a novel algorithm, named TADANN.
