Exploring the discursive and technological linkages between these two sites, the dissertation outlines the ongoing project of construing technological centrality and universality as the dominant trope in discourses about design production. An expanded critical perspective on design is thus developed that looks at technological systems -such as software- and the cultures that produce them, with their histories and regimes of power, as crucial participants in, rather than as neutral vessels for, the design and production of our built environment. The dissertation ranges from examining the politics of representation, participation and authorship in the systems imagined by members of the Computer-Aided Design Project -in particular that of Steven Coons and Nicholas Negroponte's "man-machine" design systems- to discussing the culture of BIM coordination through an ethnographic portrait and data-visualization of its practice at Gehry Technologies, in two large-scale projects in the United Arab Emirates.     Rainforests of the mind: Conceiving transnational composition from a mobilities perspective on knowledge.

    This research project stems from my experience teaching academic writing at the state university in Qatar. To investigate the factors overdetermining the deeply standardized curriculum there, I draw on scholarship in mobility studies, political economy, and the history both of Qatar and of composition instruction in the US, from which the curriculum is drawn. These explorations ultimately lead me to comment on the fraught enterprise of subjecting writing and language to commodification, which I identify as part of broader trends characterizing neoliberal economic globalization. To further develop this critique, I conduct a critical multi-sited autoethnographic study that questions preconceived notions of correctness in writing, revealing how education is increasingly tied to the demands of global economy. Chapter one develops an anti-essentialist perspective on ideology, demonstrating both the transnational appeal of an autonomous model of literacy and the frictions that deny its claims to universality. In chapter two I delve into the details and history of the Qatar University Foundation Program, looking at how it has been shaped, again, by points of ideological alignment across local and global exigencies. Chapter three takes the autoethnographic approach to the subject of postsecondary instruction in English academic writing, providing both context for my teaching experience in Qatar while substantiating broader observations about how writing knowledge is mobilized according to both local demands and increasingly global ideologies. In chapter four, I return to Qatar to sketch a tactical approach (de Certeau) to working with(in) these trends, situating the work within a broader perspective that aligns with institutional demands while refusing to deny the multifarious points of friction that drive the creation of knowledge

    The acculturation process for kaigaishijo: A qualitative study of four Japanese students in an American school

    The purpose of this study was to sort out and specify the dimensions of acculturation for kaigaishijo, Japanese sojourning students who presented an anomaly in a monocultural setting, based on factors that surfaced through data collected in the interviews and observations as a result of my conceptual framework that focused on the family, educational environment, and maturity. By sorting the data and comparing and contrasting one child\u27s experiences to those of others as individuals and as an aggregate, nine factors appeared to repeatedly impact the process of acculturation. These essential factors that provide insights into acculturation are (1) the mother\u27s role, (2) language acquisition, (3) clothing, (4) artistic endeavors, (5) educational experiences, (6) a receptive attitude, (7) personality, (8) length of residency, and (9) family value of education.;Elements of two of the three original concepts that organized my thinking, interviewing, and observations, that is family and school, played significant to moderate roles in the acculturation process of all four students of the study. The children, according to information gleaned from their parents, teachers, and school records, had met appropriate maturational milestones; therefore, the concept of maturation did not impact in these cases. Specific elements from the familial and educational environments did, however, impact the process. Two factors directly pertaining to the individual children\u27s social and psychological make-up rendered significant consequences in the process.;Numerous variables impacted the acculturative process and each child\u27s story was varied and complex. The nine common factors isolated in the study do not appear to influence the process of acculturation with equal weight. Some constitute a more salient role than others. It was concluded that three factors appear to play a minor role in acculturation, four appear moderately important, and two factors, personality and a receptive attitude, display the greatest importance.;The study was conducted in a Middle Atlantic state where the author was a school administrator. The dimensions of the process of acculturation should raise consciousness levels regarding the need to dispel stereotypes and to acknowledge differences as means to understanding and accepting diversity. Further study is needed to ascertain the generalizability of the findings to other cross-cultural populations

    Cross-Layer Rapid Prototyping and Synthesis of Application-Specific and Reconfigurable Many-accelerator Platforms

    Technological advances of recent years laid the foundation consolidation of informatisationof society, impacting on economic, political, cultural and socialdimensions. At the peak of this realization, today, more and more everydaydevices are connected to the web, giving the term ”Internet of Things”. The futureholds the full connection and interaction of IT and communications systemsto the natural world, delimiting the transition to natural cyber systems and offeringmeta-services in the physical world, such as personalized medical care, autonomoustransportation, smart energy cities etc. . Outlining the necessities of this dynamicallyevolving market, computer engineers are required to implement computingplatforms that incorporate both increased systemic complexity and also cover awide range of meta-characteristics, such as the cost and design time, reliabilityand reuse, which are prescribed by a conflicting set of functional, technical andconstruction constraints. This thesis aims to address these design challenges bydeveloping methodologies and hardware/software co-design tools that enable therapid implementation and efficient synthesis of architectural solutions, which specifyoperating meta-features required by the modern market. Specifically, this thesispresents a) methodologies to accelerate the design flow for both reconfigurableand application-specific architectures, b) coarse-grain heterogeneous architecturaltemplates for processing and communication acceleration and c) efficient multiobjectivesynthesis techniques both at high abstraction level of programming andphysical silicon level.Regarding to the acceleration of the design flow, the proposed methodologyemploys virtual platforms in order to hide architectural details and drastically reducesimulation time. An extension of this framework introduces the systemicco-simulation using reconfigurable acceleration platforms as co-emulation intermediateplatforms. Thus, the development cycle of a hardware/software productis accelerated by moving from a vertical serial flow to a circular interactive loop.Moreover the simulation capabilities are enriched with efficient detection and correctiontechniques of design errors, as well as control methods of performancemetrics of the system according to the desired specifications, during all phasesof the system development. In orthogonal correlation with the aforementionedmethodological framework, a new architectural template is proposed, aiming atbridging the gap between design complexity and technological productivity usingspecialized hardware accelerators in heterogeneous systems-on-chip and networkon-chip platforms. It is presented a novel co-design methodology for the hardwareaccelerators and their respective programming software, including the tasks allocationto the available resources of the system/network. The introduced frameworkprovides implementation techniques for the accelerators, using either conventionalprogramming flows with hardware description language or abstract programmingmodel flows, using techniques from high-level synthesis. In any case, it is providedthe option of systemic measures optimization, such as the processing speed,the throughput, the reliability, the power consumption and the design silicon area.Finally, on addressing the increased complexity in design tools of reconfigurablesystems, there are proposed novel multi-objective optimization evolutionary algo-rithms which exploit the modern multicore processors and the coarse-grain natureof multithreaded programming environments (e.g. OpenMP) in order to reduce theplacement time, while by simultaneously grouping the applications based on theirintrinsic characteristics, the effectively explore the design space effectively.The efficiency of the proposed architectural templates, design tools and methodologyflows is evaluated in relation to the existing edge solutions with applicationsfrom typical computing domains, such as digital signal processing, multimedia andarithmetic complexity, as well as from systemic heterogeneous environments, suchas a computer vision system for autonomous robotic space navigation and manyacceleratorsystems for HPC and workstations/datacenters. The results strengthenthe belief of the author, that this thesis provides competitive expertise to addresscomplex modern - and projected future - design challenges.Οι τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις των τελευταίων ετών έθεσαν τα θεμέλια εδραίωσης της πληροφοριοποίησης της κοινωνίας, επιδρώντας σε οικονομικές,πολιτικές, πολιτιστικές και κοινωνικές διαστάσεις. Στο απόγειο αυτής τη ςπραγμάτωσης, σήμερα, ολοένα και περισσότερες καθημερινές συσκευές συνδέονται στο παγκόσμιο ιστό, αποδίδοντας τον όρο «Ίντερνετ των πραγμάτων».Το μέλλον επιφυλάσσει την πλήρη σύνδεση και αλληλεπίδραση των συστημάτων πληροφορικής και επικοινωνιών με τον φυσικό κόσμο, οριοθετώντας τη μετάβαση στα συστήματα φυσικού κυβερνοχώρου και προσφέροντας μεταυπηρεσίες στον φυσικό κόσμο όπως προσωποποιημένη ιατρική περίθαλψη, αυτόνομες μετακινήσεις, έξυπνες ενεργειακά πόλεις κ.α. . Σκιαγραφώντας τις ανάγκες αυτής της δυναμικά εξελισσόμενης αγοράς, οι μηχανικοί υπολογιστών καλούνται να υλοποιήσουν υπολογιστικές πλατφόρμες που αφενός ενσωματώνουν αυξημένη συστημική πολυπλοκότητα και αφετέρου καλύπτουν ένα ευρύ φάσμα μεταχαρακτηριστικών, όπως λ.χ. το κόστος σχεδιασμού, ο χρόνος σχεδιασμού, η αξιοπιστία και η επαναχρησιμοποίηση, τα οποία προδιαγράφονται από ένα αντικρουόμενο σύνολο λειτουργικών, τεχνολογικών και κατασκευαστικών περιορισμών. Η παρούσα διατριβή στοχεύει στην αντιμετώπιση των παραπάνω σχεδιαστικών προκλήσεων, μέσω της ανάπτυξης μεθοδολογιών και εργαλείων συνσχεδίασης υλικού/λογισμικού που επιτρέπουν την ταχεία υλοποίηση καθώς και την αποδοτική σύνθεση αρχιτεκτονικών λύσεων, οι οποίες προδιαγράφουν τα μετα-χαρακτηριστικά λειτουργίας που απαιτεί η σύγχρονη αγορά. Συγκεκριμένα, στα πλαίσια αυτής της διατριβής, παρουσιάζονται α) μεθοδολογίες επιτάχυνσης της ροής σχεδιασμού τόσο για επαναδιαμορφούμενες όσο και για εξειδικευμένες αρχιτεκτονικές, β) ετερογενή αδρομερή αρχιτεκτονικά πρότυπα επιτάχυνσης επεξεργασίας και επικοινωνίας και γ) αποδοτικές τεχνικές πολυκριτηριακής σύνθεσης τόσο σε υψηλό αφαιρετικό επίπεδο προγραμματισμού,όσο και σε φυσικό επίπεδο πυριτίου.Αναφορικά προς την επιτάχυνση της ροής σχεδιασμού, προτείνεται μια μεθοδολογία που χρησιμοποιεί εικονικές πλατφόρμες, οι οποίες αφαιρώντας τις αρχιτεκτονικές λεπτομέρειες καταφέρνουν να μειώσουν σημαντικά το χρόνο εξομοίωσης. Παράλληλα, εισηγείται η συστημική συν-εξομοίωση με τη χρήση επαναδιαμορφούμενων πλατφορμών, ως μέσων επιτάχυνσης. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο, ο κύκλος ανάπτυξης ενός προϊόντος υλικού, μετατεθειμένος από την κάθετη σειριακή ροή σε έναν κυκλικό αλληλεπιδραστικό βρόγχο, καθίσταται ταχύτερος, ενώ οι δυνατότητες προσομοίωσης εμπλουτίζονται με αποδοτικότερες μεθόδους εντοπισμού και διόρθωσης σχεδιαστικών σφαλμάτων, καθώς και μεθόδους ελέγχου των μετρικών απόδοσης του συστήματος σε σχέση με τις επιθυμητές προδιαγραφές, σε όλες τις φάσεις ανάπτυξης του συστήματος. Σε ορθογώνια συνάφεια με το προαναφερθέν μεθοδολογικό πλαίσιο, προτείνονται νέα αρχιτεκτονικά πρότυπα που στοχεύουν στη γεφύρωση του χάσματος μεταξύ της σχεδιαστικής πολυπλοκότητας και της τεχνολογικής παραγωγικότητας, με τη χρήση συστημάτων εξειδικευμένων επιταχυντών υλικού σε ετερογενή συστήματα-σε-ψηφίδα καθώς και δίκτυα-σε-ψηφίδα. Παρουσιάζεται κατάλληλη μεθοδολογία συν-σχεδίασης των επιταχυντών υλικού και του λογισμικού προκειμένου να αποφασισθεί η κατανομή των εργασιών στους διαθέσιμους πόρους του συστήματος/δικτύου. Το μεθοδολογικό πλαίσιο προβλέπει την υλοποίηση των επιταχυντών είτε με συμβατικές μεθόδους προγραμματισμού σε γλώσσα περιγραφής υλικού είτε με αφαιρετικό προγραμματιστικό μοντέλο με τη χρήση τεχνικών υψηλού επιπέδου σύνθεσης. Σε κάθε περίπτωση, δίδεται η δυνατότητα στο σχεδιαστή για βελτιστοποίηση συστημικών μετρικών, όπως η ταχύτητα επεξεργασίας, η ρυθμαπόδοση, η αξιοπιστία, η κατανάλωση ενέργειας και η επιφάνεια πυριτίου του σχεδιασμού. Τέλος, προκειμένου να αντιμετωπισθεί η αυξημένη πολυπλοκότητα στα σχεδιαστικά εργαλεία επαναδιαμορφούμενων συστημάτων, προτείνονται νέοι εξελικτικοί αλγόριθμοι πολυκριτηριακής βελτιστοποίησης, οι οποίοι εκμεταλλευόμενοι τους σύγχρονους πολυπύρηνους επεξεργαστές και την αδρομερή φύση των πολυνηματικών περιβαλλόντων προγραμματισμού (π.χ. OpenMP), μειώνουν το χρόνο επίλυσης του προβλήματος της τοποθέτησης των λογικών πόρων σε φυσικούς,ενώ ταυτόχρονα, ομαδοποιώντας τις εφαρμογές βάση των εγγενών χαρακτηριστικών τους, διερευνούν αποτελεσματικότερα το χώρο σχεδίασης.Η αποδοτικότητά των προτεινόμενων αρχιτεκτονικών προτύπων και μεθοδολογιών επαληθεύτηκε σε σχέση με τις υφιστάμενες λύσεις αιχμής τόσο σε αυτοτελής εφαρμογές, όπως η ψηφιακή επεξεργασία σήματος, τα πολυμέσα και τα προβλήματα αριθμητικής πολυπλοκότητας, καθώς και σε συστημικά ετερογενή περιβάλλοντα, όπως ένα σύστημα όρασης υπολογιστών για αυτόνομα διαστημικά ρομποτικά οχήματα και ένα σύστημα πολλαπλών επιταχυντών υλικού για σταθμούς εργασίας και κέντρα δεδομένων, στοχεύοντας εφαρμογές υψηλής υπολογιστικής απόδοσης (HPC). Τα αποτελέσματα ενισχύουν την πεποίθηση του γράφοντα, ότι η παρούσα διατριβή παρέχει ανταγωνιστική τεχνογνωσία για την αντιμετώπιση των πολύπλοκων σύγχρονων και προβλεπόμενα μελλοντικών σχεδιαστικών προκλήσεων

    Realizability of embedded controllers: from hybrid models to correct implementations

    Un controller embedded \ue8 un dispositivo (ovvero, un'opportuna combinazione di componenti hardware e software) che, immerso in un ambiente dinamico, deve reagire alle variazioni ambientali in tempo reale. I controller embedded sono largamente adottati in molti contesti della vita moderna, dall'automotive all'avionica, dall'elettronica di consumo alle attrezzature mediche. La correttezza di tali controller \ue8 indubbiamente cruciale. Per la progettazione e per la verifica di un controller embedded, spesso sorge la necessit\ue0 di modellare un intero sistema che includa sia il controller, sia il suo ambiente circostante. La natura di tale sistema \ue8 ibrido. Esso, infatti, \ue8 ottenuto integrando processi ad eventi discreti (i.e., il controller) e processi a tempo continuo (i.e., l'ambiente). Sistemi di questo tipo sono chiamati cyber-physical (CPS) o sistemi ibridi. Le dinamiche di tali sistemi non possono essere rappresentati efficacemente utilizzando o solo un modello (i.e., rappresentazione) discreto o solo un modello continuo. Diversi tipi di modelli possono sono stati proposti per descrivere i sistemi ibridi. Questi si concentrano su obiettivi diversi: modelli dettagliati sono eccellenti per la simulazione del sistema, ma non sono adatti per la sua verifica; modelli meno dettagliati sono eccellenti per la verifica, ma non sono convenienti per i successivi passi di raffinamento richiesti per la progettazione del sistema, e cos\uec via. Tra tutti questi modelli, gli Automi Ibridi (HA) [8, 77] rappresentano il formalismo pi\uf9 efficace per la simulazione e la verifica di sistemi ibridi. In particolare, un automa ibrido rappresenta i processi ad eventi discreti per mezzo di macchine a stati finiti (FSM), mentre i processi a tempo continuo sono rappresentati mediante variabili "continue" la cui dinamica \ue8 specificata da equazioni differenziali ordinarie (ODE) o loro generalizzazioni (e.g., inclusioni differenziali). Sfortunatamente, a causa della loro particolare semantica, esistono diverse difficolt\ue0 nel raffinare un modello basato su automi ibridi in un modello realizzabile e, di conseguenza, esistono difficolt\ue0 nell'automatizzare il flusso di progettazione di sistemi ibridi a partire da automi ibridi. Gli automi ibridi, infatti, sono considerati dispositivi "perfetti e istantanei". Essi adottano una nozione di tempo e di variabili basata su insiemi "densi" (i.e., l'insieme dei numeri reali). In altre parole, il controller modellato potrebbe non essere implementabile, ovvero, esso potrebbe non essere realizzabile affatto. Questa tesi affronta questo problema proponendo una metodologia completa e gli strumenti necessari per derivare da modelli basati su automi ibridi, modelli realizzabili e le corrispondenti implementazioni corrette. In un modello realizzabile, il controller analizza lo stato del sistema ad istanti temporali discreti, tipicamente fissati dalla frequenza di clock del processore installato sul dispositivo che implementa il controller. Lo stato del sistema \ue8 dato dai valori delle variabili rilevati dai sensori. Questi valori vengono digitalizzati con precisione finita e propagati al controller che li elabora per decidere se cambiare la modalit\ue0 di funzionamento del sistema. In tal caso, il controller genera segnali che, una volta trasmessi agli attuatori, determineranno il cambiamento della modalit\ue0 di funzionamento del sistema. \uc8 necessario tener presente che i sensori e gli attuatori introducono ritardi che seppur limitati, non possono essere trascurati.An embedded controller is a reactive device (e.g., a suitable combination of hardware and software components) that is embedded in a dynamical environment and has to react to environment changes in real time. Embedded controllers are widely adopted in many contexts of modern life, from automotive to avionics, from consumer electronics to medical equipment. Noticeably, the correctness of such controllers is crucial. When designing and verifying an embedded controller, often the need arises to model the controller and also its surrounding environment. The nature of the obtained system is hybrid because of the inclusion of both discrete-event (i.e., controller) and continuous-time (i.e., environment) processes whose dynamics cannot be characterized faithfully using either a discrete or continuous model only. Systems of this kind are named cyber-physical (CPS) or hybrid systems. Different types of models may be used to describe hybrid systems and they focus on different objectives: detailed models are excellent for simulation but not suitable for verification, high-level models are excellent for verification but not convenient for refinement, and so forth. Among all these models, hybrid automata (HA) [8, 77] have been proposed as a powerful formalism for the design, simulation and verification of hybrid systems. In particular, a hybrid automaton represents discrete-event processes by means of finite state machines (FSM), whereas continuous-time processes are represented by using real-numbered variables whose dynamics is specified by (ordinary) differential equation (ODE) or their generalizations (e.g., differential inclusions). Unfortunately, when the high-level model of the hybrid system is a hybrid automaton, several difficulties should be solved in order to automate the refinement phase in the design flow, because of the classical semantics of hybrid automata. In fact, hybrid automata can be considered perfect and instantaneous devices. They adopt a notion of time and evaluation of continuous variables based on dense sets of values (usually R, i.e., Reals). Thus, they can sample the state (i.e., value assignments on variables) of the hybrid system at any instant in such a dense set R 650. Further, they are capable of instantaneously evaluating guard constraints or reacting to incoming events by performing changes in the operating mode of the hybrid system without any delay. While these aspects are convenient at the modeling level, any model of an embedded controller that relies for its correctness on such precision and instantaneity cannot be implemented by any hardware/software device, no matter how fast it is. In other words, the controller is un-realizable, i.e., un-implementable. This thesis proposes a complete methodology and a framework that allows to derive from hybrid automata proved correct in the hybrid domain, correct realizable models of embedded controllers and the related discrete implementations. In a realizable model, the controller samples the state of the environment at periodic discrete time instants which, typically, are fixed by the clock frequency of the processor implementing the controller. The state of the environment consists of the current values of the relevant variables as observed by the sensors. These values are digitized with finite precision and reported to the controller that may decide to switch the operating mode of the environment. In such a case, the controller generates suitable output signals that, once transmitted to the actuators, will effect the desired change in the operating mode. It is worth noting that the sensors will report the current values of the variables and the actuators will effect changes in the rates of evolution of the variables with bounded delays

    Identities and Interactions in a Transcultural Online Collaboration Project

    The traditional theoretical frameworks and assumptions about intercultural technical communication are no longer adequate to describe and teach intercultural communication now frequently happening through digital networks. My dissertation proposes to use the theory of cosmopolitanism as it has been recently applied in several social science fields as a framework for pedagogical project design in order to teach intercultural communication skills applicable in the global age. The dissertation describes a transcultural online pedagogical project between Hungarian and U.S. students that I designed according to the principles of cosmopolitan theory. In this project, students were introduced to the basic tenets of cosmopolitanism and were asked to create blogs about themselves and their varied identities and languages. Students were also asked to comment on the blogs written by students in the other country. For this dissertation, I analyzed the blogs and comments created during the project to find out how students represented their identities and interacted with each other in this online learning environment. Students’ identity representations are discussed within the framework of Burke and Stets’ identity theory. The categories of student identity, sports identity, and national identity are examined in detail by applying discourse analysis with the purpose of identifying structures of expectations as delineated by Tannen. In addition, students’ rhetorical strategies in the comment section that follow the principles of cosmopolitan communication are also described. Based on the findings of this research, I conclude the dissertation by proposing a model for the cosmopolitan communication process in this globally networked learning space that is not only applicable to similar projects but can also inform the process of transforming the teaching of transcultural technical communication making it more applicable to the increasingly global and digital workplace

    Emissaries of Literacy: Refugee Studies and Transnational Composition uses qualitative research in refugee communities and textual analysis of stories written by and about refugees to argue that the experiences of resettled refugees, as well as the experiences of the volunteers, aid workers, tutors, and teachers who work with them, do not fit neatly within composition\u27s current paradigms for studying literacy in global contexts. Refugee identity and experience shows a complex link between literacy and citizenship which is complicated by the economic and geographic histories of linguistic imperialism. Refugee perspectives, and more precisely the challenges they pose, can help composition scholars and teachers rethink our established modes of inquiry

    The Microgravity Materials Science Conference was held June 10-11, 1996 at the Von Braun Civic Center in Huntsville, AL. It was organized by the Microgravity Materials Science Discipline Working Group, sponsored by the Microgravity Science and Applications Division at NASA Headquarters, and hosted by the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the Alliance for Microgravity Materials Science and Applications (AMMSA). It was the second NASA conference of this type in the microgravity materials science discipline. The microgravity science program sponsored approximately 80 investigations and 69 principal investigators in FY96, all of whom made oral or poster presentations at this conference. The conference's purpose was to inform the materials science community of research opportunities in reduced gravity in preparation for a NASA Research Announcement (NRA) scheduled for release in late 1996 by the Microgravity Science and Applications Division at NASA Headquarters. The conference was aimed at materials science researchers from academia, industry, and government. A tour of the MSFC microgravity research facilities was held on June 12, 1996. This volume is comprised of the research reports submitted by the principal investigators after the conference and presentations made by various NASA microgravity science managers

    Oxygen flux and dielectric response study of Mixed Ionic-Electronic Conducting (MIEC) heterogeneous functional materials

    Dense mixed ionic-electronic conducting (MIEC) membranes consisting of ionic conductive perovskite-type and/or fluorite-type oxides and high electronic conductive spinel type oxides, at elevated temperature can play a useful role in a number of energy conversion related systems including the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), oxygen separation and permeation membranes, partial oxidization membrane reactors for natural gas processing, high temperature electrolysis cells, and others. This study will investigate the impact of different heterogeneous characteristics of dual phase ionic and electronic conductive oxygen separation membranes on their transport mechanisms, in an attempt to develop a foundation for the rational design of such membranes. The dielectric behavior of a material can be an indicator for MIEC performance and can be incorporated into computational models of MIEC membranes in order to optimize the composition, microstructure, and ultimately predict long term membrane performance. The dielectric behavior of the MIECs can also be an indicator of the transport mechanisms and the parameters they are dependent upon. For this study we chose a dual phase MIEC oxygen separation membrane consisting of an ionic conducting phase: gadolinium doped ceria-Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 (GDC) and an electronic conductive phase: cobalt ferrite-CoFe2O4 (CFO). The membranes were fabricated from mixtures of Nano-powder of each of the phases for different volume percentages, sintered with various temperatures and sintering time to form systematic micro-structural variations, and characterized by structural analysis (XRD), and micro-structural analysis (SEM-EDS). Performance of the membranes was tested for variable partial pressures of oxygen across the membrane at temperatures from 850°C-1060°C using a Gas Chromatography (GC) system. Permeated oxygen did not directly correlate with change in percent mixture. An intermediate mixture 60%GDC-40%CFO had the highest flux compared to the 50%GDC-50%CFO and 80%GDC-20%CFO mixtures. Material characterization suggests the emergence of a third phase contributing to the behavior. Microstructural studies suggested changes in micro-structure of a given volume fraction for different sintering temperature and sintering time. Flux variation was observed for membranes with the same constituent volume fraction but different micro-structure indicating the effects of the micro-structure on the overall oxygen permeation. To correlate the experimental flux measurement with a standard Wagner‟s flux equation, different microstructural characteristics were studied to incorporate them into a modified Wagner‟s flux equation. In-situ broadband dielectric spectroscopy measurements over a temperature range of 850°C-1060°C and frequency range of (0.1Hz-1MHz) of the operating 60%GDC-40%CFO mixture oxygen separation membranes were measured using a NOVOCONTROL dielectric spectroscopy test system. Dielectric response of the operating membrane was studied to identify the charge transfer process in the membrane. A computational model to study the dielectric impedance response of different microstructure was developed using a COMSOLTM Multiphysics qasi-static electromagnetic module. This model was validated using model materials with regular geometric shapes. To measure impedance of real micro/nano-structures of the membrane material, domains required for the COMSOL calculation were obtained from actual micro/nano structures by using 3D scans from X-ray nano and micro tomography. SimplewareTM software was used to generate 3D domains from image slices obtained from the 3D x-ray scans. Initial voltage distributions on the original microstructure were obtained from the computational model. Similarly, development of a primary model for simulating ionic/electronic species flow inside of an MIEC was also begun. The possibility of using broadband dielectric spectroscopy methods to understand and anticipate the flux capabilities of MIECs to reduce the cost and time of development of such material systems was explored
