    Modelling of wireless sensor networks for detection land and forest fire hotspot

    Indonesia located in South East Asia countries with tropical region, forest fires in Indonesia is one of big issue and disaster because it happens in almost of every year, this is because of some of region consist of peat land that high risk for fire especially in dry season. Riau Province is one of region that regularly incident of forest fire with affected the length and breadth of Indonesia. Propose development of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for detection of land and forest fire hotspot in Indonesia as well as one of the main consents in this research, case location in Riau province is at one of the regions that high risk forest fire in dry season. WSNs technology used for ground sensor system to collect environmental data. Data training for fire hotspot detection is done in data center to determine and conclude of fire hotspot then potential to become big fire. The deployment of sensors located at several locations that has potential for fire incident, especially as data shown in previous case and forecast location with potential fire happen. Mathematical analysis is used in this case for modelling number of sensors required to deploy and the size of forest area. The design and development of WSNs give high impact and feasibility to overcome current issues of forest fire and fire hotspot detection in Indonesia. The development of this system used WSNs highly applicable for early warning and alert system for fire hotspot detection

    Mobility-Based Routing Overhead Management in Reconfigurable Wireless Ad Hoc Networks Routing Overheads are the non-data message packets whose roles are establishment and maintenance of routes for data packets as well as neighbourhood discovery and maintenance. They have to be broadcasted in the network either through flooding or other techniques that can ensure that a path exists before data packets can be sent to various destinations. They can be sent reactively or periodically to neighbours so as to keep nodes updated on their neighbourhoods. While we cannot do without these overhead packets, they occupy much of the limited wireless bandwidth available in wireless networks. In a reconfigurable wireless ad hoc network scenario, these packets have more negative effects, as links need to be confirmed more frequently than in traditional networks mainly because of the unpredictable behaviour of the ad hoc networks. We therefore need suitable algorithms that will manage these overheads so as to allow data packet to have more access to the wireless medium, save node energy for longer life of the network, increased efficiency, and scalability. Various protocols have been suggested in the research area. They mostly address routing overheads for suitability of particular protocols leading to lack of standardisation and inapplicability to other protocol classes. In this dissertation ways of ensuring that the routing overheads are kept low are investigated. The issue is addressed both at node and network levels with a common goal of improving efficiency and performance of ad hoc networks without dedicating ourselves to a particular class of routing protocol. At node level, a method hereby referred to as "link availability forecast", that minimises routing overheads used for maintenance of neighbourhood, is derived. The targeted packets are packets that are broadcasted periodically (e.g. hello messages). The basic idea in this method is collection of mobility parameters from the neighbours and predictions or forecasts of these parameters in future. Using these parameters in simple calculations helps in identifying link availabilities between nodes participating in maintenance of networks backbone. At the network level, various approaches have been suggested. The first approach is the cone flooding method that broadcasts route request messages through a predetermined cone shaped region. This region is determined through computation using last known mobility parameters of the destination. Another approach is what is hereby referred as "destination search reverse zone method". In this method, a node will keep routes to destinations for a long time and use these routes for tracing the destination. The destination will then initiate route search in a reverse manner, whereby the source selects the best route for next delivery. A modification to this method is for the source node to determine the zone of route search and define the boundaries within which the packet should be broadcasted. The later method has been used for simulation purposes. The protocol used for verification of the improvements offered by the schemes was the AODV. The link availability forecast scheme was implemented on the AODV and labelled AODV_LA while the network level implementation was labelled AODV_RO. A combination of the two schemes was labelled AODV_LARO

    Design and implementation of application-specific medium access control protocol for scalable smart home embedded systems

University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2016By incorporating electrical devices, appliances and house features in a system that is controlled and monitored either remotely or on-site, smart home technologies have recently gained an increasing popularity. There are several smart home systems already available, ranging from simple on-site home monitoring to self-learning and Wi-Fi enabled systems. However, current systems do not fully make use of recent technological advancement and synergy among a variable number of sensors for improved data collection. For a synergistic system to be provident it needs to be modular and scalable to match exact user needs (type of applications and adequate number of sensors for each application). With an increased number of sensors intelligently placed to optimize the data collection, a wireless network is indispensable for a flexible and inexpensive installation. Such a network requires an efficient medium access control protocol to sustain a reliable system, provide flexibility in design and to achieve lower power consumption. This thesis brings to light practical ways to improve current smart home systems. As the main contribution of this work, we introduce a novel application-specific medium access control protocol able to support suggested improvements. In addition, a smart home prototype system is implemented to evaluate the protocol performance and prove concepts of recommended advances. This thesis covers the design of the proposed novel medium access protocol and the software/hardware implementation of the prototype system focusing on the monitoring and data analysis side, while providing inputs for the control side of the system. The smart home system prototype is Wi-Fi and Web connected, designed and implemented to emphasize system usability and energy efficiency

    Low power body sensor network design based on relaying of creeping waves in the unlicensed 2.4GHz band

    Body Sensor Networks are an important enabling technology for future applications in remote medical diagnostics. Practical deployments of these systems have only recently edged closer to viability, due in part to advances in low power electronics and System-On-Chip devices. Wireless communication between these sensors remains a daunting challenge, and designers typically leverage existing industrial standards designed for applications with significantly different communications requirements. This Thesis proposes a wireless communications platform designed specifically for body mounted sensors, exploiting a phenomenon in electromagnetic wave propagation known as a creeping wave. Relaying of these waves leads to a highly reliable body sensor network with very low power consumption in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz band. A link budget is derived based on the creeping wave component of the transmitted signal, which is then used to design a spread spectrum wireless transceiver. Significant attention is given to interference mitigation, allowing the system to co-exist with other wireless devices on the internationally unlicensed band. Fading statistics from both anechoic and high multipath scenarios are used to define a channel model for the system. The link budget and channel model lead to the proposed use of relaying as a power savings technique, and this concept is a core feature of the design. This technique is shown to provide reliable total body coverage with very low transmission power, a result that has eluded body sensor networks to date. Various relaying topologies are discussed, and robust operation for highly mobile users is achieved via sensor handoffs, a concept that resembles a similar solution in cellular networks. The design extends to define a polling protocol and packet structures. Objective performance metrics are defined, and the proposed system is evaluated in line with these metrics. The power reduction of the suggested approach is analyzed by comparing the network lifetime and energy-per-bit to those of a reference system offering the same quality of service without relaying. The analysis results in generic closed form expressions of significant gains. The improvement in network lifetime increases with the number of sensors and settles at approximately 8x104, 7x106, 7x107 and 3x108 for 2,4,6 and 8 relaying nodes respectively. The energy-per-bit is shown to decrease by 2, 116, 828 and 2567 for 2, 4, 6 and 8 relay nodes respectively

    Controlling the mobility and enhancing the performance of multiple message ferries in delay tolerant networks

    In einem drahtlosen Netzwerk mit isolierten und stationären Knoten können Adhoc und verzögerungstolerante Netzwerk Routing-Protokolle nicht verwendet werden. Message Ferry Netzwerke sind die Lösung für diese Fälle, in denen ein (oder mehrere) Message Ferry Knoten den store-carry-forward Mechanismus verwendet und zwischen den Knoten reist, um Nachrichten auszutauschen. In diesem Fall erfahren die Nachrichten für gewöhnlich eine lange Verzögerung. Um die Performance der Message Ferry Netzwerke zu verbessern, kann die Mobilität der Message Ferry Knoten gesteuert werden. In dieser Doktorarbeit werden zwei Strategien zur Steuerung der Mobilität der Message Ferry Knoten studiert. Die Strategien sind das on-the-fly Entscheidungsverfahren in Ferry Knoten und die offline Wegplanung für Ferry Knoten. Für die on-the-fly Strategie untersucht diese Arbeit Decision-maker in Ferry Knoten, der die Entscheidung auf Grundlage der lokalen Observation eines Ferry Knoten trifft. Zur Koordinierung mehrerer Ferry Knoten, die keine globale Kenntnis über das Netzwerk haben, wird eine indirekte Signalisierung zwischen Ferry Knoten vorgeschlagen. Zur Kooperation der Ferry Knoten für die Zustellung der Nachrichten werden einige Ansätze zum Nachrichtenaustausch zwischen Ferry Knoten vorgeschlagen, in denen der Decision-maker eines Ferry Knotens seine Information mit dem verzögerungstoleranten Router des Ferry Knoten teilt, um die Effizienz des Nachrichtenaustauschs zwischen Ferry Knoten zu verbessern. Umfangreiche Simulationsstudien werden zur Untersuchung der vorgeschlagenen Ansätze und des Einflusses verschiedener Nachrichtenverkehrsszenarien vorgenommen. Außerdem werden verschiedene Szenarien mit unterschiedlicher Anzahl von Ferry Knoten, verschiedener Geschwindigkeit der Ferry Knoten und verschiedener Ansätze zum Nachrichtenaustausch zwischen Ferry Knoten studiert. Zur Evaluierung der offline Wegplanungsstrategie wird das Problem als Multiple Traveling Salesmen Problem (mTSP) modelliert und ein genetischer Algorithmus zur Approximation der Lösung verwendet. Es werden verschiedene Netzwerkarchitekturen zur Pfadplanung der Ferry Knoten vorgestellt und studiert. Schließlich werden die Strategien zur Steuerung der Mobilität der Ferry Knoten verglichen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Performance der Strategien in Bezug auf die Ende-zu-Ende-Verzögerung von dem Szenario des Nachrichtenverkehrs abhängt. In Szenarien, wie Nachrichtenverkehr in Sensor-Netzwerken, in denen ein Knoten die Nachrichten zu allen anderen Knoten sendet oder von allen anderen Knoten empfängt, zeigt die offline Wegplanung, basierend auf der mTSP Lösung, bessere Performance als die on-the-fly Strategie. Andererseits ist die on-the-fly Stratgie eine bessere Wahl in Szenarien wie Nachrichtenaustausch zwischen Rettungskräften während einer Katastrophe, in denen alle drahtlose Knoten die Nachrichten austauschen müssen. Zudem ist die on-the-fly Strategie flexibler, robuster als offline Wegplanung und benötigt keine Initialisierungszeit.In a wireless network with isolated and stationary nodes, ad hoc and delay tolerant routing approaches fail to deliver messages. Message ferry networks are the solution for such networks where one or multiple mobile nodes, i.e. message ferry, apply the store-carry-forward mechanism and travel between nodes to exchange their messages. Messages usually experience a long delivery delay in this type of network. To improve the performance of message ferry networks, the mobility of ferries can be controlled. In this thesis, two main strategies to control mobility of multiple message ferries are studied. The strategies are the on-the-fly mobility decision making in ferries and the offline path planning for ferries. To apply the on-the-fly strategy, this work proposes a decision maker in ferries which makes mobility decisions based on the local observations of ferries. To coordinate multiple ferries, which have no global view from the network, an indirect signaling of ferries is proposed. For cooperation of ferries in message delivery, message forwarding and replication schemes are proposed where the mobility decision maker shares its information with the delay tolerant router of ferries to improve the efficiency of message exchange between ferries. An extensive simulation study is performed to investigate the performance of the proposed schemes and the impact of different traffic scenarios in a network. Moreover, different scenarios with different number of ferries, different speed of ferries and different message exchange approaches between ferries are studied. To study the offline path planning strategy, the problem is modeled as multiple traveling salesmen problem (mTSP) and a genetic algorithm is applied to approximate the solution. Different network architectures are proposed and studied where the path of ferries are planned in advance. Finally, the strategies to control the mobility of ferries are compared. The results show that the performance of each strategy, in terms of the average end-to-end delay of messages, depends on the traffic scenario in a network. In traffic scenarios same as the traffic in sensor networks, where only a single node generates messages to all nodes or receives messages from all node, the offline path planning based on mTSP solution performs better than the on-the-fly decision making. On the other hand, in traffic scenarios same as the traffic in disaster scenarios, where all nodes in a network may send and receive messages, the on-the-fly decision making provides a better performance. Moreover, the on-thy-fly decision making is always more flexible, more robust and does not need any initialization time
