    Distributed control and navigation system for quadrotor UAVs in GPS-denied environments

    The problem of developing distributed control and navigation system for quadrotor UAVs operating in GPS-denied environments is addressed in the paper. Cooperative navigation, marker detection and mapping task solved by a team of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles is chosen as demo example. Developed intelligent control system complies with on 4D\RCS reference model and its implementation is based on ROS framework.     Communication-based UAV Swarm Missions

    Unmanned aerial vehicles have developed rapidly in recent years due to technological advances. UAV technology can be applied to a wide range of applications in surveillance, rescue, agriculture and transport. The problems that can exist in these areas can be mitigated by combining clusters of drones with several technologies. For example, when a swarm of drones is under attack, it may not be able to obtain the position feedback provided by the Global Positioning System (GPS). This poses a new challenge for the UAV swarm to fulfill a specific mission. This thesis intends to use as few sensors as possible on the UAVs and to design the smallest possible information transfer between the UAVs to maintain the shape of the UAV formation in flight and to follow a predetermined trajectory. This thesis presents Extended Kalman Filter methods to navigate autonomously in a GPS-denied environment.     Comparative Study of Indoor Navigation Systems for Autonomous Flight

    Recently, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have attracted the society and researchers due to the capability to perform in economic, scientific and emergency scenarios, and are being employed in large number of applications especially during the hostile environments. They can operate autonomously for both indoor and outdoor applications mainly including search and rescue, manufacturing, forest fire tracking, remote sensing etc. For both environments, precise localization plays a critical role in order to achieve high performance flight and interacting with the surrounding objects. However, for indoor areas with degraded or denied Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) situation, it becomes challenging to control UAV autonomously especially where obstacles are unidentified. A large number of techniques by using various technologies are proposed to get rid of these limits. This paper provides a comparison of such existing solutions and technologies available for this purpose with their strengths and limitations. Further, a summary of current research status with unresolved issues and opportunities is provided that would provide research directions to the researchers of the similar interests

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have developed rapidly in recent years due to technological advances and UAV technology finds applications in a wide range of fields, including surveillance, search and rescue, and agriculture. The utilization of UAV swarms in these contexts offers numerous advantages, increasing their value across different industries. These advantages include increased efficiency in tasks, enhanced productivity, greater safety, and the higher data quality. The coordination of UAVs becomes particularly crucial during missions in these applications, especially when drones are flying in close proximity as part of a swarm. For instance, if a drone swarm is targeted or needs to navigate through a Global Positioning System (GPS)-denied environment, it may encounter challenges in obtaining the location information typically provided by GPS. This poses a new challenge for the UAV swarms to maintain a reliable formation and successfully complete a given mission. In this article, our objective is to minimize the number of sensors required on each UAV and reduce the amount of information exchanged between UAVs. This approach aims to ensure the reliable maintenance of UAV formations with minimal communication requirements among UAVs while they follow predetermined trajectories during swarm missions. In this paper, we introduce a concept that utilizes extended Kalman filter, leader-follower-based control and a distributed data-sharing scheme to ensure the reliable and safe maintenance of formations and navigation autonomously for UAV swarm missions in GPS-denied environments.     A novel distributed architecture for UAV indoor navigation

    Abstract In the last decade, different indoor flight navigation systems for small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been investigated, with a special focus on different configurations and on sensor technologies. The main idea of this paper is to propose a distributed Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC) system architecture, based on Robotic Operation System (ROS) for light weight UAV autonomous indoor flight. The proposed framework is shown to be more robust and flexible than common configurations. A flight controller and companion computer running ROS for control and navigation are also included in the section. Both hardware and software diagrams are given to show the complete architecture. Further works will be based on the experimental validation of the proposed configuration by indoor flight tests

    Sensitivity analysis of a relative navigation solution for unmanned aerial vehicles in a GNSS-denied environment

    Cooperative navigation between two or more unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is an important enabling technology for problems such as military reconnaissance, disaster response, and search and rescue. In many of these situations Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as Global Positioning System (GPS), may be unreliable or unavailable due to structural impedance or malicious signal jamming. Therefore, the task of maintaining a reliable relative navigation solution without the use of GNSS is an important need for the aforementioned missions.;To meet this need, this thesis focuses on the relative navigation between two UAVs that are operating in a GNSS-denied environment. In particular, the design and sensitivity of a navigation algorithm are presented. The navigation algorithm presented consists of an Unscented Kalman filter that fuses multiple on-board sensors to estimate the relative pose between two UAVs. These sensors include: strap-down inertial measurement units, ultra-wideband ranging radios, strap-down tri-axial magnetometers, and downward facing cameras. Through the use of a Monte Carlo simulation study, the presented algorithm\u27s performance sensitivity to various sensor payload characteristics, flight dynamics, and initial condition errors is evaluated. Additionally, a research platform that will provide for a future experimental evaluation of the algorithm presented in this thesis has been integrated and tested as part of this work

    Cooperative monocular-based SLAM for multi-UAV systems in GPS-denied environments

    This work presents a cooperative monocular-based SLAM approach for multi-UAV systems that can operate in GPS-denied environments. The main contribution of the work is to show that, using visual information obtained from monocular cameras mounted onboard aerial vehicles flying in formation, the observability properties of the whole system are improved. This fact is especially notorious when compared with other related visual SLAM configurations. In order to improve the observability properties, some measurements of the relative distance between the UAVs are included in the system. These relative distances are also obtained from visual information. The proposed approach is theoretically validated by means of a nonlinear observability analysis. Furthermore, an extensive set of computer simulations is presented in order to validate the proposed approach. The numerical simulation results show that the proposed system is able to provide a good position and orientation estimation of the aerial vehicles flying in formation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Pushbroom Stereo for High-Speed Navigation in Cluttered Environments

    We present a novel stereo vision algorithm that is capable of obstacle detection on a mobile-CPU processor at 120 frames per second. Our system performs a subset of standard block-matching stereo processing, searching only for obstacles at a single depth. By using an onboard IMU and state-estimator, we can recover the position of obstacles at all other depths, building and updating a full depth-map at framerate. Here, we describe both the algorithm and our implementation on a high-speed, small UAV, flying at over 20 MPH (9 m/s) close to obstacles. The system requires no external sensing or computation and is, to the best of our knowledge, the first high-framerate stereo detection system running onboard a small UAV
