Discrete and fuzzy dynamical genetic programming in the XCSF learning classifier system
A number of representation schemes have been presented for use within
learning classifier systems, ranging from binary encodings to neural networks.
This paper presents results from an investigation into using discrete and fuzzy
dynamical system representations within the XCSF learning classifier system. In
particular, asynchronous random Boolean networks are used to represent the
traditional condition-action production system rules in the discrete case and
asynchronous fuzzy logic networks in the continuous-valued case. It is shown
possible to use self-adaptive, open-ended evolution to design an ensemble of
such dynamical systems within XCSF to solve a number of well-known test
problems

Local search: A guide for the information retrieval practitioner
There are a number of combinatorial optimisation problems in information retrieval in which the use of local search methods are worthwhile. The purpose of this paper is to show how local search can be used to solve some well known tasks in information retrieval (IR), how previous research in the field is piecemeal, bereft of a structure and methodologically flawed, and to suggest more rigorous ways of applying local search methods to solve IR problems. We provide a query based taxonomy for analysing the use of local search in IR tasks and an overview of issues such as fitness functions, statistical significance and test collections when conducting experiments on combinatorial optimisation problems. The paper gives a guide on the pitfalls and problems for IR practitioners who wish to use local search to solve their research issues, and gives practical advice on the use of such methods. The query based taxonomy is a novel structure which can be used by the IR practitioner in order to examine the use of local search in IR
Probabilistic Graphical Models on Multi-Core CPUs using Java 8
In this paper, we discuss software design issues related to the development
of parallel computational intelligence algorithms on multi-core CPUs, using the
new Java 8 functional programming features. In particular, we focus on
probabilistic graphical models (PGMs) and present the parallelisation of a
collection of algorithms that deal with inference and learning of PGMs from
data. Namely, maximum likelihood estimation, importance sampling, and greedy
search for solving combinatorial optimisation problems. Through these concrete
examples, we tackle the problem of defining efficient data structures for PGMs
and parallel processing of same-size batches of data sets using Java 8
features. We also provide straightforward techniques to code parallel
algorithms that seamlessly exploit multi-core processors. The experimental
analysis, carried out using our open source AMIDST (Analysis of MassIve Data

An Investigation into the Merger of Stochastic Diffusion Search and Particle Swarm Optimisation
This study reports early research aimed at applying the powerful resource allocation mechanism deployed in Stochastic Diffusion Search (SDS) to the Particle Swarm Optimiser (PSO) metaheuristic, effectively merging the two swarm intelligence algorithms. The results reported herein suggest that the hybrid algorithm, exploiting information sharing between particles, has the potential to improve the optimisation capability of conventional PSOs
Model predictive control techniques for hybrid systems
This paper describes the main issues encountered when applying model predictive control to hybrid processes. Hybrid model predictive control (HMPC) is a research field non-fully developed with many open challenges. The paper describes some of the techniques proposed by the research community to overcome the main problems encountered. Issues related to the stability and the solution of the optimization problem are also discussed.
