A survey of quality measures for gray-scale image compression
Although a variety of techniques are available today for gray-scale image compression, a complete evaluation of these techniques cannot be made as there is no single reliable objective criterion for measuring the error in compressed images. The traditional subjective criteria are burdensome, and usually inaccurate or inconsistent. On the other hand, being the most common objective criterion, the mean square error (MSE) does not have a good correlation with the viewer's response. It is now understood that in order to have a reliable quality measure, a representative model of the complex human visual system is required. In this paper, we survey and give a classification of the criteria for the evaluation of monochrome image quality

Virtual viewpoint three-dimensional panorama

always has a fixed appearance. The idea presented in this paper focuses on the use of the concept of virtual
viewpoint creation to generate different panoramic images of the same scene with three-dimensional
component. Three-dimensional effect in a resultant panorama is realized by superimposing a stereo-pair of
panoramic images
Depth map compression via 3D region-based representation
In 3D video, view synthesis is used to create new virtual views between
encoded camera views. Errors in the coding of the depth maps introduce
geometry inconsistencies in synthesized views. In this paper, a new 3D plane
representation of the scene is presented which improves the performance of
current standard video codecs in the view synthesis domain. Two image segmentation
algorithms are proposed for generating a color and depth segmentation.
Using both partitions, depth maps are segmented into regions without
sharp discontinuities without having to explicitly signal all depth edges. The
resulting regions are represented using a planar model in the 3D world scene.
This 3D representation allows an efficient encoding while preserving the 3D
characteristics of the scene. The 3D planes open up the possibility to code
multiview images with a unique representation.Postprint (author's final draft
Image Semantics in the Description and Categorization of Journalistic Photographs
This paper reports a study on the description and categorization of images. The aim of the study was to evaluate existing indexing frameworks in the context of reportage photographs and to find out how the use of this particular image genre influences the results. The effect of different tasks on image description and categorization was also studied. Subjects performed keywording and free description tasks and the elicited terms were classified using the most extensive one of the reviewed frameworks. Differences were found in the terms used in constrained and unconstrained descriptions. Summarizing terms such as abstract concepts, themes, settings and emotions were
used more frequently in keywording than in free description. Free descriptions included more terms referring to locations within the images, people and descriptive terms due to the narrative form the subjects used without prompting. The evaluated framework was found to lack some syntactic and semantic classes present in the data and modifications were suggested. According to the results of this study image categorization is based on high-level interpretive concepts,
including affective and abstract themes. The results indicate that image genre influences categorization and keywording modifies and truncates natural image description
The State of the Art in Cartograms
Cartograms combine statistical and geographical information in thematic maps,
where areas of geographical regions (e.g., countries, states) are scaled in
proportion to some statistic (e.g., population, income). Cartograms make it
possible to gain insight into patterns and trends in the world around us and
have been very popular visualizations for geo-referenced data for over a
century. This work surveys cartogram research in visualization, cartography and
geometry, covering a broad spectrum of different cartogram types: from the
traditional rectangular and table cartograms, to Dorling and diffusion
cartograms. A particular focus is the study of the major cartogram dimensions:
statistical accuracy, geographical accuracy, and topological accuracy. We
review the history of cartograms, describe the algorithms for generating them,
and consider task taxonomies. We also review quantitative and qualitative
evaluations, and we use these to arrive at design guidelines and research
challenges
Advanced Proof Viewing in ProofTool
Sequent calculus is widely used for formalizing proofs. However, due to the
proliferation of data, understanding the proofs of even simple mathematical
arguments soon becomes impossible. Graphical user interfaces help in this
matter, but since they normally utilize Gentzen's original notation, some of
the problems persist. In this paper, we introduce a number of criteria for
proof visualization which we have found out to be crucial for analyzing proofs.
We then evaluate recent developments in tree visualization with regard to these
criteria and propose the Sunburst Tree layout as a complement to the
traditional tree structure. This layout constructs inferences as concentric
circle arcs around the root inference, allowing the user to focus on the
proof's structural content. Finally, we describe its integration into ProofTool

Suggestibility as an operant factor in advertising effects, cognitive defences and the issue of consumer sovereignty
This paper is a response to two recent, unrelated studies in the ongoing issue of unconsciously processed advertising messages, one on similarity of hypnotic suggestion to suggestion in advertising, the other discussing more recent, similar constructs from psychology called the Duel Process Model in regard to the susceptibility of children to advertising. Implications for understanding low involvement advertising effects are discussed, plus the potential for a research agenda. The main theme of this paper is that it is clear that suggestions can be received without conscious awareness, but whether these are acted on may depend, as the hypnosis literature indicates, on a similarly unconscious filtering mechanism which retains control over consumer behaviour. Recent attempts to uncover these unconscious mechanisms have demonstrated the existence of such activity. The main conclusion of this paper is that consumer sovereignty remains a political, rather than a research issue
Assessment criteria for 2D shape transformations in animation
The assessment of 2D shape transformations (or morphing) for animation is a difficult task because it is a multi-dimensional problem. Existing morphing techniques pay most attention to shape information interactive control and mathematical simplicity. This paper shows that it is not enough to use shape information alone, and we should consider other factors such as structure, dynamics, timing, etc. The paper also shows that an overall objective assessment of morphing is impossible because factors such as timing are related to subjective judgement, yet local objective assessment criteria, e.g. based on shape, are available. We propose using “area preservation” as the shape criterion for the 2D case as an acceptable approximation to “volume preservation” in reality, and use it to establish cases in which a number of existing techniques give clearly incorrect results.
