In this study, a context-based automatic spell correction method for Turkish texts is presented. The method combines the Noisy Channel Model with Hidden Markov Models to correct a given word. This study deviates from the other studies by also considering the contextual information of the word within the sentence. The proposed method is aimed to be integrated to other word-based spelling correction models.Published versio

    Holistic Vocabulary Independent Spoken Term Detection

    Within this thesis, we aim at designing a loosely coupled holistic system for Spoken Term Detection (STD) on heterogeneous German broadcast data in selected application scenarios. Starting from STD on the 1-best output of a word-based speech recognizer, we study the performance of several subword units for vocabulary independent STD on a linguistically and acoustically challenging German corpus. We explore the typical error sources in subword STD, and find that they differ from the error sources in word-based speech search. We select, extend and combine a set of state-of-the-art methods for error compensation in STD in order to explicitly merge the corresponding STD error spaces through anchor-based approximate lattice retrieval. Novel methods for STD result verification are proposed in order to increase retrieval precision by exploiting external knowledge at search time. Error-compensating methods for STD typically suffer from high response times on large scale databases, and we propose scalable approaches suitable for large corpora. Highest STD accuracy is obtained by combining anchor-based approximate retrieval from both syllable lattice ASR and syllabified word ASR into a hybrid STD system, and pruning the result list using external knowledge with hybrid contextual and anti-query verification.Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt ein lose gekoppeltes, ganzheitliches System zur Sprachsuche auf heterogenenen deutschen Sprachdaten in unterschiedlichen Anwendungsszenarien. Ausgehend von einer wortbasierten Sprachsuche auf dem Transkript eines aktuellen Wort-Erkenners werden zunächst unterschiedliche Subwort-Einheiten für die vokabularunabhängige Sprachsuche auf deutschen Daten untersucht. Auf dieser Basis werden die typischen Fehlerquellen in der Subwort-basierten Sprachsuche analysiert. Diese Fehlerquellen unterscheiden sich vom Fall der klassichen Suche im Worttranskript und müssen explizit adressiert werden. Die explizite Kompensation der unterschiedlichen Fehlerquellen erfolgt durch einen neuartigen hybriden Ansatz zur effizienten Ankerbasierten unscharfen Wortgraph-Suche. Darüber hinaus werden neuartige Methoden zur Verifikation von Suchergebnissen vorgestellt, die zur Suchzeit verfügbares externes Wissen einbeziehen. Alle vorgestellten Verfahren werden auf einem umfangreichen Satz von deutschen Fernsehdaten mit Fokus auf ausgewählte, repräsentative Einsatzszenarien evaluiert. Da Methoden zur Fehlerkompensation in der Sprachsuchforschung typischerweise zu hohen Laufzeiten bei der Suche in großen Archiven führen, werden insbesondere auch Szenarien mit sehr großen Datenmengen betrachtet. Die höchste Suchleistung für Archive mittlerer Größe wird durch eine unscharfe und Anker-basierte Suche auf einem hybriden Index aus Silben-Wortgraphen und silbifizierter Wort-Erkennung erreicht, bei der die Suchergebnisse mit hybrider Verifikation bereinigt werden

    Spell checkers and correctors : a unified treatment

    The aim of this dissertation is to provide a unified treatment of various spell checkers and correctors. Firstly, the spell checking and correcting problems are formally described in mathematics in order to provide a better understanding of these tasks. An approach that is similar to the way in which denotational semantics used to describe programming languages is adopted. Secondly, the various attributes of existing spell checking and correcting techniques are discussed. Extensive studies on selected spell checking/correcting algorithms and packages are then performed. Lastly, an empirical investigation of various spell checking/correcting packages is presented. It provides a comparison and suggests a classification of these packages in terms of their functionalities, implementation strategies, and performance. The investigation was conducted on packages for spell checking and correcting in English as well as in Northern Sotho and Chinese. The classification provides a unified presentation of the strengths and weaknesses of the techniques studied in the research.     A large vocabulary online handwriting recognition system for Turkish

    Handwriting recognition in general and online handwriting recognition in particular has been an active research area for several decades. Most of the research have been focused on English and recently on other scripts like Arabic and Chinese. There is a lack of research on recognition in Turkish text and this work primarily fills that gap with a state-of-the-art recognizer for the first time. It contains design and implementation details of a complete recognition system for recognition of Turkish isolated words. Based on the Hidden Markov Models, the system comprises pre-processing, feature extraction, optical modeling and language modeling modules. It considers the recognition of unconstrained handwriting with a limited vocabulary size first and then evolves to a large vocabulary system. Turkish script has many similarities with other Latin scripts, like English, which makes it possible to adapt strategies that work for them. However, there are some other issues which are particular to Turkish that should be taken into consideration separately. Two of the challenging issues in recognition of Turkish text are determined as delayed strokes which introduce an extra source of variation in the sequence order of the handwritten input and high Out-of-Vocabulary (OOV) rate of Turkish when words are used as vocabulary units in the decoding process. This work examines the problems and alternative solutions at depth and proposes suitable solutions for Turkish script particularly. In delayed stroke handling, first a clear definition of the delayed strokes is developed and then using that definition some alternative handling methods are evaluated extensively on the UNIPEN and Turkish datasets. The best results are obtained by removing all delayed strokes, with up to 2.13% and 2.03% points recognition accuracy increases, over the respective baselines of English and Turkish. The overall system performances are assessed as 86.1% with a 1,000-word lexicon and 83.0% with a 3,500-word lexicon on the UNIPEN dataset and 91.7% on the Turkish dataset. Alternative decoding vocabularies are designed with grammatical sub-lexical units in order to solve the problem of high OOV rate. Additionally, statistical bi-gram and tri-gram language models are applied during the decoding process. The best performance, 67.9% is obtained by the large stem-ending vocabulary that is expanded with a bi-gram model on the Turkish dataset. This result is superior to the accuracy of the word-based vocabulary (63.8%) with the same coverage of 95% on the BOUN Web Corpus

    Discrimination in lexical decision.

    In this study we present a novel set of discrimination-based indicators of language processing derived from Naive Discriminative Learning (ndl) theory. We compare the effectiveness of these new measures with classical lexical-distributional measures-in particular, frequency counts and form similarity measures-to predict lexical decision latencies when a complete morphological segmentation of masked primes is or is not possible. Data derive from a re-analysis of a large subset of decision latencies from the English Lexicon Project, as well as from the results of two new masked priming studies. Results demonstrate the superiority of discrimination-based predictors over lexical-distributional predictors alone, across both the simple and primed lexical decision tasks. Comparable priming after masked corner and cornea type primes, across two experiments, fails to support early obligatory segmentation into morphemes as predicted by the morpho-orthographic account of reading. Results fit well with ndl theory, which, in conformity with Word and Paradigm theory, rejects the morpheme as a relevant unit of analysis. Furthermore, results indicate that readers with greater spelling proficiency and larger vocabularies make better use of orthographic priors and handle lexical competition more efficiently

    Detecting misspelled words in Turkish text using syllable n-gram frequencies

    In this study, we have designed and implemented a system which decides whether or not a word is misspelled in Turkish text. Firstly, three databases of syllable monogram, bigram and trigram frequencies are constructed using the syllables that are derived from five different Turkish corpora. Then, the system takes words in Turkish text as an input and computes the probability distribution of words using syllable monogram, bigram and trigram frequencies from the databases. If the probability distribution of a word is zero, it is decided that this word is misspelled. For testing the system, we have constructed two text databases with the same words. One text database has 685 misspelled words. The other has 685 correctly spelled words. The words from these text databases are taken as inputs for the system. The system produces two results for each word: "Correctly spelled word" or "Misspelled word". The system that is designed with monogram and bigram frequencies has 86% success rate for the misspelled words and has 88% success rate for the correctly spelled words. According to the system designed with bigram and trigram frequencies, there is 97% success rate for the misspelled words and there is 98% success rate for the correctly spelled words
