    Path planning algorithms for autonomous navigation of a non-holonomic robot in unstructured environments

    openPath planning is a crucial aspect of autonomous robot navigation, enabling robots to efficiently and safely navigate through complex environments. This thesis focuses on autonomous navigation for robots in dynamic and uncertain environments. In particular, the project aims to analyze the localization and path planning problems. A fundamental review of the existing literature on path planning algorithms has been carried on. Various factors affecting path planning, such as sensor data fusion, map representation, and motion constraints, are also analyzed. Thanks to the collaboration with E80 Group S.p.A., the project has been developed using ROS (Robot Operating System) on a Clearpath Dingo-O, an indoor mobile robot. To address the challenges posed by unstructured and dynamic environments, ROS follows a combined approach of using a global planner and a local planner. The global planner generates a high-level path, considering the overall environment, while the local planner handles real-time adjustments to avoid moving obstacles and optimize the trajectory. This thesis describes the role of the global planner in a ROS-framework. Performance benchmarking of traditional algorithms like Dijkstra and A*, as well as other techniques, is fundamental in order to understand the limits of these methods. In the end, the Hybrid A* algorithm is introduced as a promising approach for addressing the issues of unstructured environments for autonomous navigation of a non-holonomic robot. The core concepts and implementation details of the algorithm are discussed, emphasizing its ability to efficiently explore continuous state spaces and generate drivable paths.The effectiveness of the proposed path planning algorithms is evaluated through extensive simulations and real-world experiments using the mobile platform.     The provision of assistive mobile robotics for empowering and providing independence to the infirm, disabled and elderly in society has been the subject of much research. The issue of providing navigation and control assistance to users, enabling them to drive their powered wheelchairs effectively, can be complex and wide-ranging; some users fatigue quickly and can find that they are unable to operate the controls safely, others may have brain injury re-sulting in periodic hand tremors, quadriplegics may use a straw-like switch in their mouth to provide a digital control signal. Advances in autonomous robotics have led to the development of smart wheelchair systems which have attempted to address these issues; however the autonomous approach has, ac-cording to research, not been successful; users reporting that they want to be active drivers and not passengers. Recent methodologies have been to use collaborative or shared control which aims to predict or anticipate the need for the system to take over control when some pre-decided threshold has been met, yet these approaches still take away control from the us-er. This removal of human supervision and control by an autonomous system makes the re-sponsibility for accidents seriously problematic. This thesis introduces a new human-in-the-loop control structure with real-time assistive lev-els. One of these levels offers improved dynamic modelling and three of these levels offer unique and novel real-time solutions for: collision avoidance, localisation and waypoint iden-tification, and assistive trajectory generation. This architecture and these assistive functions always allow the user to remain fully in control of any motion of the powered wheelchair, shown in a series of experiments

Hareketli platformun üzerindeki donanım bataryalar, üç eksende hareketli bir kamera, çift çekirdekli bir DSP sistemi, Linux tabanlı bir kontrol kartı, kablosuz ağ ve video bağlantısı, grafik LCD ve detayları sunulmus olan, iki eksende hareketli bir lazer isaretçi ile kameranın kullanıldığı, çalısmaya özel olarak gelistirilmis üç boyutlu mesafe ölçerinden olusmaktadır.In this study, an omnidirectional mobile robot with sufficient processing power, sensory units and communication facilities for being utilized as an application development platform for a wide range of academic research in the field of robotics was designed and implemented. The base plane of the robot is attached onto two differential drive platforms, giving four-degrees-of-freedom to the base. This makes the robot able to move to any direction with proper control of the differential drive platforms, giving the property of omnidirectionality. A method to reduce odometric errors and make odometry based accurate positioning possible was also presented which utilizes the geometrical advantages particular to the robot’s mechanic design. The hardware on the moving base consists of batteries, a camera moving in three axes, a dual core DSP system, a Linux based control card, wireless network and video connection, graphical LCD and a laser pointer moving in two axes.     A review on energy efficiency in autonomous mobile robots

    Purpose: This paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the state of the art in energy efficiency for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), focusing on energy sources, consumption models, energy-efficient locomotion, hardware energy consumption, optimization in path planning and scheduling methods, and to suggest future research directions. Design/methodology/approach: The systematic literature review (SLR) identified 244 papers for analysis. Research articles published from 2010 onwards were searched in databases including Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and Scopus using keywords and search criteria related to energy and power management in various robotic systems. Findings: The review highlights the following key findings: batteries are the primary energy source for AMRs, with advances in battery management systems enhancing efficiency; hybrid models offer superior accuracy and robustness; locomotion contributes over 50% of a mobile robot’s total energy consumption, emphasizing the need for optimized control methods; factors such as the center of mass impact AMR energy consumption; path planning algorithms and scheduling methods are essential for energy optimization, with algorithm choice depending on specific requirements and constraints. Research limitations/implications: The review concentrates on wheeled robots, excluding walking ones. Future work should improve consumption models, explore optimization methods, examine artificial intelligence/machine learning roles and assess energy efficiency trade-offs. Originality/value: This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of energy efficiency in AMRs, highlighting the key findings from the SLR and suggests future research directions for further advancements in this field

    Stabilization of Mobile Manipulators

    The focus of this work is to generate a method of stabilization in a system generated through the marriage of a mobile robot and a manipulator. While the stability of a rigid manipulator is a solved problem, upon the introduction of flexibilities into the manipulator base structure there is the simultaneous introduction of an unmodeled, induced, oscillatory disturbance to the manipulator system from the mobile base suspension and mounting. Under normal circumstances, the disturbance can be modeled through experimentation and then a form of vibration suppression control can be employed to damp the induced oscillations in the base. This approach is satisfactory for disturbances that are measured, however the hardware necessary to measure the induced oscillations in the manipulator base is generally not included in mobile manipulation systems. Because of this lack of sensing hardware it becomes difficult to directly compensate for the induced disturbances in the system. Rather than developing a direct method for compensation, efforts are made to find postures of the manipulator where the flexibilities of the system are passive. In these postures the manipulator behaves as if it is on a rigid base, this allows the use of higher feedback gains and simpler control architectures.Ph.D

    Adaptive and learning-based formation control of swarm robots

    Autonomous aerial and wheeled mobile robots play a major role in tasks such as search and rescue, transportation, monitoring, and inspection. However, these operations are faced with a few open challenges including robust autonomy, and adaptive coordination based on the environment and operating conditions, particularly in swarm robots with limited communication and perception capabilities. Furthermore, the computational complexity increases exponentially with the number of robots in the swarm. This thesis examines two different aspects of the formation control problem. On the one hand, we investigate how formation could be performed by swarm robots with limited communication and perception (e.g., Crazyflie nano quadrotor). On the other hand, we explore human-swarm interaction (HSI) and different shared-control mechanisms between human and swarm robots (e.g., BristleBot) for artistic creation. In particular, we combine bio-inspired (i.e., flocking, foraging) techniques with learning-based control strategies (using artificial neural networks) for adaptive control of multi- robots. We first review how learning-based control and networked dynamical systems can be used to assign distributed and decentralized policies to individual robots such that the desired formation emerges from their collective behavior. We proceed by presenting a novel flocking control for UAV swarm using deep reinforcement learning. We formulate the flocking formation problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), and consider a leader-follower configuration, where consensus among all UAVs is used to train a shared control policy, and each UAV performs actions based on the local information it collects. In addition, to avoid collision among UAVs and guarantee flocking and navigation, a reward function is added with the global flocking maintenance, mutual reward, and a collision penalty. We adapt deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) with centralized training and decentralized execution to obtain the flocking control policy using actor-critic networks and a global state space matrix. In the context of swarm robotics in arts, we investigate how the formation paradigm can serve as an interaction modality for artists to aesthetically utilize swarms. In particular, we explore particle swarm optimization (PSO) and random walk to control the communication between a team of robots with swarming behavior for musical creation
