    Energy Efficient Hardware Design for Securing the Internet-of-Things

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly growing field that holds potential to transform our everyday lives by placing tiny devices and sensors everywhere. The ubiquity and scale of IoT devices require them to be extremely energy efficient. Given the physical exposure to malicious agents, security is a critical challenge within the constrained resources. This dissertation presents energy-efficient hardware designs for IoT security. First, this dissertation presents a lightweight Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) accelerator design. By analyzing the algorithm, a novel method to manipulate two internal steps to eliminate storage registers and replace flip-flops with latches to save area is discovered. The proposed AES accelerator achieves state-of-art area and energy efficiency. Second, the inflexibility and high Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) costs of Application-Specific-Integrated-Circuits (ASICs) motivate a more flexible solution. This dissertation presents a reconfigurable cryptographic processor, called Recryptor, which achieves performance and energy improvements for a wide range of security algorithms across public key/secret key cryptography and hash functions. The proposed design employs circuit techniques in-memory and near-memory computing and is more resilient to power analysis attack. In addition, a simulator for in-memory computation is proposed. It is of high cost to design and evaluate new-architecture like in-memory computing in Register-transfer level (RTL). A C-based simulator is designed to enable fast design space exploration and large workload simulations. Elliptic curve arithmetic and Galois counter mode are evaluated in this work. Lastly, an error resilient register circuit, called iRazor, is designed to tolerate unpredictable variations in manufacturing process operating temperature and voltage of VLSI systems.     Virtualizing Reconfigurable Architectures: From Fpgas To Beyond

    With field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) being widely deployed in data centers to enhance the computing performance, an efficient virtualization support is required to fully unleash the potential of cloud FPGAs. However, the system support for FPGAs in the context of the cloud environment is still in its infancy, which leads to a low resource utilization due to the tight coupling between compilation and resource allocation. Moreover, the system support proposed in existing works is limited to a homogeneous FPGA cluster comprising identical FPGA devices, which is hard to be extended to a heterogeneous FPGA cluster that comprises multiple types of FPGAs. As the FPGA cloud is expected to become increasingly heterogeneous due to the hardware rolling upgrade strategy, it is necessary to provide efficient virtualization support for the heterogeneous FPGA cluster. In this dissertation, we first identify three pairs of conflicting requirements from runtime management and offline compilation, which are related to the tradeoff between flexibility and efficiency. These conflicting requirements are the fundamental reason why the single-level abstraction proposed in prior works for the homogeneous FPGA cluster cannot be trivially extended to the heterogeneous cluster. To decouple these conflicting requirements, we provide a two-level system abstraction. Specifically, the high-level abstraction is FPGA-agnostic and provides a simple and homogeneous view of the FPGA resources to simplify the runtime management and maximize the flexibility. On the contrary, the low-level abstraction is FPGA-specific and exposes sufficient low-level hardware details to the compilation framework to ensure the mapping quality and maximize the efficiency. This generic two-level system abstraction can also be specialized to the homogeneous FPGA cluster and/or be extended to leverage application-specific information to further improve the efficiency. We also develop a compilation framework and a modular runtime system with a heuristic-based runtime management policy to support this two-level system abstraction. By enabling a dynamic FPGA sharing at the sub-FPGA granularity, the proposed virtualization solution can deploy 1.62x more applications using the same amount of FPGA resources and reduce the compilation time by 22.6% (perform as many compilation tasks in parallel as possible) with an acceptable virtualization overhead, i.e., Finally, we use Liquid Silicon as a case study to show that the proposed virtualization solution can be extended to other spatial reconfigurable architectures. Liquid Silicon is a homogeneous reconfigurable architecture enabled by the non-volatile memory technology (i.e., RRAM). It extends the configuration capability of existing FPGAs from computation to the whole spectrum ranging from computation to data storage. It allows users to better customize hardware by flexibly partitioning hardware resources between computation and memory based on the actual usage.     Simulation-Based Power Estimation for High Throughput SHA-256 Design on Unfolding Transformation

    In recent years, security has grown in importance as a research topic. Several cryptographic SHA-256 hash algorithms have been developed to enhance the performance of data-protection techniques. In security system designs where data transmission must be properly encrypted to avoid eavesdropping and unwanted monitoring, the Hash Function is vital. In constructing the SHA-256 algorithm, high speed, compact size, and low power consumption are all factors to be taken into account for an efficient implementation. The purpose of this project is to reduce dynamic thermal power dissipation of SHA-256 unfolding transformation. State encoding is a method used in reducing power design strategies that have been proposed to lower the dynamic power dissipation of the algorithm. The algorithms are successfully designed using the Altera Quartus II platform. The ModelSim is used to test how accurate the results of simulations written in Verilog code are and to validate them. This study presents the unfolding transformation with Gray encoding approach to reduce the SHA-256 design's power consumption and increase its throughput. The SHA-256 unfolding transformation reduces the amount of clock cycles required for conventional architecture. In this research, the dynamic power SHA-256 unfolding factor 4 with Gray encoding reduces by 43.4 percent from Binary encoding with high throughput of the design. Therefore, it was suggested that to provide high performance of the embedded security system design, an unfolding transformation with Gray encoding design can be applied to the hash function design. Thus, the performance of the SHA-256 design can be greatly enhanced by changing the state encoding with the high number of unfolding factors. Based on this technology, the Power Analyzer in Altera Quartus II may produce an accurate simulation-based power assessment

    Real-Time High-Resolution Multiple-Camera Depth Map Estimation Hardware and Its Applications

    Depth information is used in a variety of 3D based signal processing applications such as autonomous navigation of robots and driving systems, object detection and tracking, computer games, 3D television, and free view-point synthesis. These applications require high accuracy and speed performances for depth estimation. Depth maps can be generated using disparity estimation methods, which are obtained from stereo matching between multiple images. The computational complexity of disparity estimation algorithms and the need of large size and bandwidth for the external and internal memory make the real-time processing of disparity estimation challenging, especially for high resolution images. This thesis proposes a high-resolution high-quality multiple-camera depth map estimation hardware. The proposed hardware is verified in real-time with a complete system from the initial image capture to the display and applications. The details of the complete system are presented. The proposed binocular and trinocular adaptive window size disparity estimation algorithms are carefully designed to be suitable to real-time hardware implementation by allowing efficient parallel and local processing while providing high-quality results. The proposed binocular and trinocular disparity estimation hardware implementations can process 55 frames per second on a Virtex-7 FPGA at a 1024 x 768 XGA video resolution for a 128 pixel disparity range. The proposed binocular disparity estimation hardware provides best quality compared to existing real-time high-resolution disparity estimation hardware implementations. A novel compressed-look up table based rectification algorithm and its real-time hardware implementation are presented. The low-complexity decompression process of the rectification hardware utilizes a negligible amount of LUT and DFF resources of the FPGA while it does not require the existence of external memory. The first real-time high-resolution free viewpoint synthesis hardware utilizing three-camera disparity estimation is presented. The proposed hardware generates high-quality free viewpoint video in real-time for any horizontally aligned arbitrary camera positioned between the leftmost and rightmost physical cameras. The full embedded system of the depth estimation is explained. The presented embedded system transfers disparity results together with synchronized RGB pixels to the PC for application development. Several real-time applications are developed on a PC using the obtained RGB+D results. The implemented depth estimation based real-time software applications are: depth based image thresholding, speed and distance measurement, head-hands-shoulders tracking, virtual mouse using hand tracking and face tracking integrated with free viewpoint synthesis. The proposed binocular disparity estimation hardware is implemented in an ASIC. The ASIC implementation of disparity estimation imposes additional constraints with respect to the FPGA implementation. These restrictions, their implemented efficient solutions and the ASIC implementation results are presented. In addition, a very high-resolution (82.3 MP) 360°x90° omnidirectional multiple camera system is proposed. The hemispherical camera system is able to view the target locations close to horizontal plane with more than two cameras. Therefore, it can be used in high-resolution 360° depth map estimation and its applications in the future

    Efficient and Scalable Computing for Resource-Constrained Cyber-Physical Systems: A Layered Approach

    With the evolution of computing and communication technology, cyber-physical systems such as self-driving cars, unmanned aerial vehicles, and mobile cognitive robots are achieving increasing levels of multifunctionality and miniaturization, enabling them to execute versatile tasks in a resource-constrained environment. Therefore, the computing systems that power these resource-constrained cyber-physical systems (RCCPSs) have to achieve high efficiency and scalability. First of all, given a fixed amount of onboard energy, these computing systems should not only be power-efficient but also exhibit sufficiently high performance to gracefully handle complex algorithms for learning-based perception and AI-driven decision-making. Meanwhile, scalability requires that the current computing system and its components can be extended both horizontally, with more resources, and vertically, with emerging advanced technology. To achieve efficient and scalable computing systems in RCCPSs, my research broadly investigates a set of techniques and solutions via a bottom-up layered approach. This layered approach leverages the characteristics of each system layer (e.g., the circuit, architecture, and operating system layers) and their interactions to discover and explore the optimal system tradeoffs among performance, efficiency, and scalability. At the circuit layer, we investigate the benefits of novel power delivery and management schemes enabled by integrated voltage regulators (IVRs). Then, between the circuit and microarchitecture/architecture layers, we present a voltage-stacked power delivery system that offers best-in-class power delivery efficiency for many-core systems. After this, using Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) as a case study, we develop a real-time resource scheduling framework at the architecture and operating system layers for heterogeneous computing platforms with guaranteed task deadlines. Finally, fast dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) based power management across the circuit, architecture, and operating system layers is studied through a learning-based hierarchical power management strategy for multi-/many-core systems

    Embedded electronic systems driven by run-time reconfigurable hardware

    Abstract This doctoral thesis addresses the design of embedded electronic systems based on run-time reconfigurable hardware technology –available through SRAM-based FPGA/SoC devices– aimed at contributing to enhance the life quality of the human beings. This work does research on the conception of the system architecture and the reconfiguration engine that provides to the FPGA the capability of dynamic partial reconfiguration in order to synthesize, by means of hardware/software co-design, a given application partitioned in processing tasks which are multiplexed in time and space, optimizing thus its physical implementation –silicon area, processing time, complexity, flexibility, functional density, cost and power consumption– in comparison with other alternatives based on static hardware (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). The design flow of such technology is evaluated through the prototyping of several engineering applications (control systems, mathematical coprocessors, complex image processors, etc.), showing a high enough level of maturity for its exploitation in the industry.Resumen Esta tesis doctoral abarca el diseño de sistemas electrónicos embebidos basados en tecnología hardware dinámicamente reconfigurable –disponible a través de dispositivos lógicos programables SRAM FPGA/SoC– que contribuyan a la mejora de la calidad de vida de la sociedad.     Friction Force Microscopy of Deep Drawing Made Surfaces

    Aim of this paper is to contribute to micro-tribology understanding and friction in micro-scale interpretation in case of metal beverage production, particularly the deep drawing process of cans. In order to bridging the gap between engineering and trial-and-error principles, an experimental AFM-based micro-tribological approach is adopted. For that purpose, the can’s surfaces are imaged with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the frictional force signal is measured with frictional force microscopy (FFM). In both techniques, the sample surface is scanned with a stylus attached to a cantilever. Vertical motion of the cantilever is recorded in AFM and horizontal motion is recorded in FFM. The presented work evaluates friction over a micro-scale on various samples gathered from cylindrical, bottom and round parts of cans, made of same the material but with different deep drawing process parameters. The main idea is to link the experimental observation with the manufacturing process. Results presented here can advance the knowledge in order to comprehend the tribological phenomena at the contact scales, too small for conventional tribology
