    Design, Development, and Implementation of a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN): The Hartford Job Corps Academy Case Study

    Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) offer flexibility, mobility, and scalability to educational institutions. Students are increasingly expecting anywhere, anytime access to online resources. Secondary school administrators, who serve a similar population as the National Job Corps Program (NJCP), realize that student success in the 21st century workplace depends upon the student\u27s ability to use new and emerging technologies, including wireless technology. Computer access anytime and anywhere is crucial to the success of students today. Wireless technology has been broadly deployed at educational institutions, such as the Hartford Job Corps Academy (HJCA), but little is known about how these networks are deployed and used, specifically at a Job Corps center. HJCA deployed a WLAN in 2005. Information about the core aspects of the design and implementation of anytime, anywhere initiatives, such as wireless solutions in education, is needed to complement the current research. The NJCP does not have a model for standardizing, organizing, and maintaining wireless networks. The goal of this investigation was to develop a model for planning, designing, and implementing a wireless solution for the Job Corps system. The case study findings from the investigation and the systems development life cycle (SDLC) provided the framework for structuring WLANs at other Job Corps centers. This framework also facilitated the investigation and a determination of the significance of the case study findings, and the analysis and development of the WLAN implementation model for the NJCP. The findings of the HJCA investigation from multiple sources are presented. Using the SDLC framework and the findings from the case study, the NJCP WLAN implementation model is presented. The NJCP WLAN implementation model may be used to facilitate the deployment of WLANs at government-operated, education and training facilities, such as the NJCP

    Enhancing Message Privacy In Wired Equivalent Privacy.

    The 802.11 standard defines the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and encapsulation of data frames. It is intended to provide data privacy to the level of a wired network. WEP suffered threat of attacks from hackers owing to certain security shortcomings in the WEP protocol. Lately, many new protocols like WiFi Protected Access (WPA), WPA2, Robust Secure Network (RSN) and 802.11i have come into being, yet their implementation is fairly limited. Despite its shortcomings one cannot undermine the importance of WEP as it still remains the most widely used system and we chose to address certain security issues and propose some modifications to make it more secure. In this thesis we have proposed a modification to the existing WEP protocol to make it more secure. We achieve Message Privacy by ensuring that the encryption is not breached. The idea is to update the shared secret key frequently based on factors like network traffic and number of transmitted frames. We also develop an Initialization Vector (IV) avoidance algorithm that eliminates IV collision problem. The idea is to partition the IV bits among different wireless hosts in a predetermined manner unique to every node. We can use all possible 224 different IVs without making them predictable for an attacker. Our proposed algorithm eliminates the IV collision ensuring Message Privacy that further strengthens security of the existing WEP. We show that frequent rekeying thwarts all kinds of cryptanalytic attacks on the WEP

    For almost 15 years, since it has been released, Wi-Fi has been one of the dominant technologies in telecommunication world. However, because of its weaknesses related to security, interference and weak quality of service it has not been accepted as a viable business. Furthermore, it also operates in unlicensed spectrum bands which magnify these issues. On the other hand, technological innovations through new improvements in the world of Wi-Fi have made it one of the most popular indoor communication solutions for enterprises as well as in outdoor common meeting points. Therefore, it has become imperative to study this subject due to its popularity and several issues associated with this technology to create a viable business model for Anvia Oyj. In an attempt to contribute towards this field, present thesis provides a comprehensive theoretical framework that addresses WLAN technology from different aspects including Wi-Fi roaming as well as the description of business model segments. In order to strengthen enterprise WLAN business models, a comprehensive data was collected through different resources. First, an internal interview in Anvia Oyj based on its current enterprise WLAN business model was conducted. Secondly, two surveys were conducted in different enterprise WLAN customer segments; 32 interviews with small office home office (SOHO) enterprises and 10 interviews with SMEs/LEs and municipalities. Thirdly, a global enterprise WLAN market analysis was conducted through Internet resources. Based on these, analyzes, recommendations and business model enhancements are suggested in this thesis.     On the design of a Wi-Fi network infrastructure for the public parking space at the Seve Ballesteros – Santander Airport

    RESUMEN: En el mundo del transporte de personas y mercancías, los aeropuertos juegan un papel crucial hoy en día. Lejos quedaron los años en los que los pocos aeródromos y aeropuertos estaban destinados, en su gran mayoría, a fines militares. Actualmente, la mayor parte de los viajes y trayectos de transporte en los cuales la distancia es considerable (entiéndase envíos postales entre países lejanos, por ejemplo), son llevados a cabo utilizando aeronaves. Es por ello por lo que los aeropuertos, a su vez, también han adquirido una gran notoriedad en los últimos años. Debido a la gran demanda de tráfico aéreo, los aeropuertos necesitan llevar a cabo modificaciones y ampliaciones en su infraestructura con el fin de dar el mejor servicio posible a cada vez más pasajeros. Entre dichos servicios destaca el uso de las TIC como herramienta para la gestión aeroportuaria y para la mejora de la prestación del servicio a los pasajeros. Específicamente y sólo el año actual, la tasa de crecimiento de usuarios en Internet es del 9,1 %, lo que significa que más de cuatro mil millones de usuarios se conectan a la red a diario. Por ello, la empresa AENA necesita y considera primordial esta ampliación en su infraestructura de red por diferentes causas, entre las que pueden encontrarse la comodidad de los pasajeros para acceder a Internet desde cualquier punto del recinto del aeropuerto o la mejora en la organización y gestión de los distintos trabajos llevados a cabo por parte del personal de AENA. Debido a ello, el objetivo de este Trabajo Fin de Máster es afrontar el estudio, diseño y propuesta de la infraestructura Wi-Fi necesaria para realizar su implantación en el aparcamiento público del aeropuerto, hasta ahora inexistente, y como complemento al servicio Wi-Fi ya existente en el interior del edificio terminal. Se partirá de un estudio de cobertura, utilizando una herramienta software específica, con la que se establecerán los puntos en los que se deberían situar los puntos de acceso para garantizar un nivel adecuado de señal. Posteriormente se llevará a cabo un estudio de los elementos que sería necesario desplegar, así como la infraestructura de red a utilizar: cableado, etc. El resultado final del TFM sería, por tanto, un proyecto completo para afrontar el despliegue de la red Wi- Fi en la zona de interés, incluyendo una valoración económica preliminar del mismo.ABSTRACT: Nowdays, in the world of passenger and freight transport, airports play a crucial role. Those years when the few airfields and airports were destined for the most part on military purposes seem to be so far today. At present, most of the people’s travels and transport journeys in which the distance is considerable (i.e. postal consignments between distant countries), are carried out using aircraft. It is for this reason that airports, in turn, have also gained a great deal of notoriety in recent years. Due to the high demand for air traffic, airports need to carry out modifications and expansions in their infrastructure in order to provide the best possible service to more and more services claimers. Between these services, the use of ICTs as a tool for airport management and for improving the provision of services to passengers are highlighted. Specifically, and just for the current year, the rate of growth of Internet users is 9.1%, which means that more than four billion users connect to the network on a daily basis. For this reason, AENA needs and primarily considers this expansion in its network infrastructure for different reasons, among which may be the comfort of passengers to access the Internet from anywhere in the airport or the improvement in the organization and management of the various work carried out by AENA staff. Due to this, the objective of this Master's End Project is to deal with the study, design and proposal of the Wi-Fi infrastructure (which until now did not exist) needed to carry on the implementation it in the public car park at the airport and as a complement to the existing Wi-Fi service inside the terminal building. The starting point will be a coverage study, using a specific software tool, which will establish the points where the access points should be located to ensure an adequate level of coverage. Subsequently, a study of the elements that would need to be deployed will be carried out, as well as the network infrastructure to be used: cabling, etc. The final result of the TFM would therefore be a complete project to tackle the deployment of the Wi-Fi network in the area of interest, including a preliminary economic assessment.Máster en Ingeniería de Telecomunicació

    End to end architecture and mechanisms for mobile and wireless communications in the Internet

    Architecture et mécanismes de bout en bout pour les communications mobiles et sans fil dans l'Internet. La gestion performante de la mobilité et l'amélioration des performances des couches basses sont deux enjeux fondamentaux dans le contexte des réseaux sans fil. Cette thèse apporte des solutions originales et innovantes qui visent à répondre à ces deux problématiques empêchant à ce jour d'offrir des possibilités de communication performantes et sans couture aux usagers mobiles accédant à l'Internet via des réseaux d'accès locaux sans fil (WLAN). Ces solutions se distinguent en particulier par l'impact minimum qu'elles ont sur les protocoles standards de l'Internet (niveaux transport et réseau) ou de l'IEEE (niveaux physique et liaison de données). S'inscrivant dans les paradigmes de "bout en bout" et "cross-layer", notre architecture permet d'offrir des solutions efficaces pour la gestion de la mobilité : gestion de la localisation et des handover en particulier. En outre, nous montrons que notre approche permet également d'améliorer l'efficacité des transmissions ainsi que de résoudre efficacement plusieurs syndromes identifiés au sein de 802.11 tels que les anomalies de performance, l'iniquité entre les flux et l'absence de contrôle de débit entre la couche MAC et les couches supérieures. Cette thèse résout ces problèmes en combinant des modèles analytiques, des simulations et de réelles expérimentations. Ces mécanismes adaptatifs ont été développés et intégrés dans une architecture de communication qui fournit des services de communication à haute performance pour réseaux sans fils tels que WIFI et WIMAX. ABSTRACT : Wireless networks, because of the potential pervasive and mobile communication services they offer, are becoming the dominant Internet access networks. However, the legacy Internet protocols, still dominant at that time, have not been designed with mobility and wireless in mind. Therefore, numerous maladjustments and “defaults of impedance” can be observed when combining wireless physical and MAC layers with the traditional upper layers. This thesis proposes several solutions for a pacific coexistence between these communication layers that have been defined and designed independently. Reliable mobility management and Low layer performance enhancements are two main challenging issues in the context of wireless networks. Mobility management (which is mostly based on mobile IP architecture nowadays) aims to continuously assign and control the wireless connections of mobile nodes amongst a space of wireless access networks. Low layer performance enhancements mainly focus on the transmission efficiency such as higher rate, lower loss, interference avoidance. This thesis addresses these two important issues from an original and innovative approach that, conversely to the traditional contributions, entails a minimum impact on the legacy protocols and internet infrastructure. Following the “end to end” and “cross layer” paradigms, we address and offer efficient and light solutions to fast handover, location management and continuous connection support through a space of wireless networks. Moreover, we show that such an approach makes it possible to enhance transmission efficiency and solve efficiently several syndromes that plague the performances of current wireless networks such as performance anomaly, unfairness issues and maladjustment between MAC layer and upper layers. This thesis tackles these issues by combining analytical models, simulations and real experiments. The resulting mechanisms have been developed and integrated into adaptive mobility management communication architecture that delivers high performing communication services to mobile wireless systems, with a focus on WIFI and WIMAX access networks

    Easing the Transition from Inspiration to Implementation: A Rapid Prototyping Platform for Wireless Medium Access Control Protocols

    Packet broadcast networks are in widespread use in modern wireless communication systems. Medium access control is a key functionality within such technologies. A substantial research effort has been and continues to be invested into the study of existing protocols and the development of new and specialised ones. Academic researchers are restricted in their studies by an absence of suitable wireless MAC protocol development methods. This thesis describes an environment which allows rapid prototyping and evaluation of wireless medium access control protocols. The proposed design flow allows specification of the protocol using the specification and description language (SDL) formal description technique. A tool is presented to convert the SDL protocol description into a C++ model suitable for integration into both simulation and implementation environments. Simulations at various levels of abstraction are shown to be relevant at different stages of protocol design. Environments based on the Cinderella SDL simulator and the ns-2 network simulator have been developed which allow early functional verification, along with detailed and accurate performance analysis of protocols under development. A hardware platform is presented which allows implementation of protocols with flexibility in the hardware/software trade-off. Measurement facilities are integral to the hardware framework, and provide a means for accurate real-world feedback on protocol performance

    VANET-enabled eco-friendly road characteristics-aware routing for vehicular traffic

    There is growing awareness of the dangers of climate change caused by greenhouse gases. In the coming decades this could result in numerous disasters such as heat-waves, flooding and crop failures. A major contributor to the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions is the transport sector, particularly private vehicles. Traffic congestion involving private vehicles also causes a lot of wasted time and stress to commuters. At the same time new wireless technologies such as Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) are being developed which could allow vehicles to communicate with each other. These could enable a number of innovative schemes to reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. 1) EcoTrec is a VANET-based system which allows vehicles to exchange messages regarding traffic congestion and road conditions, such as roughness and gradient. Each vehicle uses the messages it has received to build a model of nearby roads and the traffic on them. The EcoTrec Algorithm then recommends the most fuel efficient route for the vehicles to follow. 2) Time-Ants is a swarm based algorithm that considers not only the amount of cars in the spatial domain but also the amoumt in the time domain. This allows the system to build a model of the traffic congestion throughout the day. As traffic patterns are broadly similar for weekdays this gives us a good idea of what traffic will be like allowing us to route the vehicles more efficiently using the Time-Ants Algorithm. 3) Electric Vehicle enhanced Dedicated Bus Lanes (E-DBL) proposes allowing electric vehicles onto the bus lanes. Such an approach could allow a reduction in traffic congestion on the regular lanes without greatly impeding the buses. It would also encourage uptake of electric vehicles. 4) A comprehensive survey of issues associated with communication centred traffic management systems was carried out
