    On green routing and scheduling problem

    The vehicle routing and scheduling problem has been studied with much interest within the last four decades. In this paper, some of the existing literature dealing with routing and scheduling problems with environmental issues is reviewed, and a description is provided of the problems that have been investigated and how they are treated using combinatorial optimization tools

    An improved MOEA/D algorithm for multi-objective multicast routing with network coding

    Network coding enables higher network throughput, more balanced traffic, and securer data transmission. However, complicated mathematical operations incur when packets are combined at intermediate nodes, which, if not operated properly, lead to very high network resource consumption and unacceptable delay. Therefore, it is of vital importance to minimize various network resources and end-to-end delays while exploiting promising benefits of network coding. Multicast has been used in increasingly more applications, such as video conferencing and remote education. In this paper the multicast routing problem with network coding is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem (MOP), where the total coding cost, the total link cost and the end-to-end delay are minimized simultaneously. We adapt the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) for this MOP by hybridizing it with a population-based incremental learning technique which makes use of the global and historical information collected to provide additional guidance to the evolutionary search. Three new schemes are devised to facilitate the performance improvement, including a probability-based initialization scheme, a problem-specific population updating rule, and a hybridized reproduction operator. Experimental results clearly demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms a number of state-of-the-art MOEAs regarding the solution quality and computational time

    Algorithms for the multi-objective vehicle routing problem with hard time windows and stochastic travel time and service time

    This paper introduces a multi-objective vehicle routing problem with hard time windows and stochastic travel and service times. This problem has two practical objectives: minimizing the operational costs, and maximizing the service level. These objectives are usually conflicting. Thus, we follow a multi-objective approach, aiming to compute a set of Pareto-optimal alternatives with different trade-offs for a decision maker to choose from. We propose two algorithms (a Multi-Objective Memetic Algorithm and a Multi-Objective Iterated Local Search) and compare them to an evolutionary multi-objective optimizer from the literature. We also propose a modified statistical method for the service level calculation. Experiments based on an adapted version of the 56 Solomon instances demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms

    The arc routing problem with a variable starting/ending position (Open Capacitated Arc Routing Problem - OCARP), in its classic version, pursues the best strategy to serve a set of customers located in the network arcs using vehicles. Compared to the Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (CARP), the OCARP lacks of constrains that guarantee that each vehicle ought to start and end the tour at a given vertex (also known as a depot). The aim of this paper is to propose a heuristic to find an efficient frontier for the main objective functions: minimize the number of vehicles and the total cost. Additionally, a hybrid algorithm that complements the genetic algorithm with artificial intelligence operator is proposed.El Problema de ruteo de vehículos sobre arcos con punto de inicio/fin variable (Open Capacitated Arc Routing Problem - OCARP), en su versión clásica, busca determinar la mejor estrategia para servir un conjunto de clientes localizados en los arcos de una red usando vehículos. A diferencia del Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (CARP), el OCARP no tiene las restricciones que aseguran que cada vehículo debe iniciar y terminar su ruta en un vértice dado (también conocido como depósito). El objetivo de este trabajo es proponer una heurística para encontrar la frontera eficiente dados dos objetivos: minimizar el número de vehículos y minimizar el costo total.     In the efficient management of the supply chain the optimal management of transport of consumables and finished products appears. The costs associated with transport have direct impact on the final value consumers must pay, which in addition to requiring competitive products also demand that they are generated in environmentally friendly organizations. Aware of this reality, this document is intended to be a starting point for Master's and Doctoral degree students who want to work in a line of research recently proposed: green routing. The state of the art of the vehicle routing problem is presented in this paper, listing its variants, models and methodologies for solution. Furthermore, the proposed interaction between variants of classical routing problems and environmental effects of its operations, known in the literature as Green-VRP is presented. The goal is to generate a discussion in which mathematical models and solution strategies that can be applied within organizations that consider within their objectives an efficient and sustainable operation are posed. En el gerenciamiento eficiente de la cadena de suministro aparece la gestión óptima del transporte de insumos y productos terminados. Los costos asociados al transporte tienen impacto directo sobre el valor final que deben pagar los consumidores, que además de requerir productos competitivos también exigen que los mismos sean generados en organizaciones amigables con el medioambiente. Consientes de esa realidad este documento pretende ser un punto de partida para estudiantes de maestría y doctorado que quieran trabajar en una línea de investigación propuesta recientemente: el ruteo verde. En este trabajo se muestra un estado del arte del problema de ruteo de vehículos, enumerando sus variantes, modelos y metodologías de solución. Además, se presenta la interacción que se ha propuesto entre variantes clásicas de los problemas de ruteo y los efectos ambientales de su operación, denominados en la literatura como Green-VRP.     Submodular memetic approximation for multiobjective parallel test paper generation

    Parallel test paper generation is a biobjective distributed resource optimization problem, which aims to generate multiple similarly optimal test papers automatically according to multiple user-specified assessment criteria. Generating high-quality parallel test papers is challenging due to its NP-hardness in both of the collective objective functions. In this paper, we propose a submodular memetic approximation algorithm for solving this problem. The proposed algorithm is an adaptive memetic algorithm (MA), which exploits the submodular property of the collective objective functions to design greedy-based approximation algorithms for enhancing steps of the multiobjective MA. Synergizing the intensification of submodular local search mechanism with the diversification of the population-based submodular crossover operator, our algorithm can jointly optimize the total quality maximization objective and the fairness quality maximization objective. Our MA can achieve provable near-optimal solutions in a huge search space of large datasets in efficient polynomial runtime. Performance results on various datasets have shown that our algorithm has drastically outperformed the current techniques in terms of paper quality and runtime efficiency
