    Decomposition of terminology graphs for domain knowledge acquisition.

    International audienceWe propose a graph decomposition algorithm for analyzing the structure of complex graph networks. After multi-word term extraction, we apply techniques from text mining and visual analytics in a novel way by integrating symbolic and numeric information to build clusters of domain topics. Terms are clustered based on surface linguistic variations and clusters are inserted in an association network based on their intersection with documents. The graph is then decomposed based on atom graph structure into central (non-decomposable) atom and peripheral atoms. The whole process is applied to publications from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) project in the Astronomy field. The mapping obtained was evaluated by a domain expert and appeared to have captured interesting conceptual relations between different domain topics

    ExTaSem! Extending, Taxonomizing and Semantifying Domain Terminologies

    We introduce EXTASEM!, a novel approach for the automatic learning of lexical taxonomies from domain terminologies. First, we exploit a very large semantic network to collect thousands of in-domain textual definitions. Second, we extract (hyponym, hypernym) pairs from each definition with a CRF-based algorithm trained on manuallyvalidated data. Finally, we introduce a graph induction procedure which constructs a full-fledged taxonomy where each edge is weighted according to its domain pertinence. EXTASEM! achieves state-of-the-art results in the following taxonomy evaluation experiments: (1) Hypernym discovery, (2) Reconstructing gold standard taxonomies, and (3) Taxonomy quality according to structural measures.     The Process Description Capture Method (IDEF3) is one of several Integrated Computer-Aided Manufacturing (ICAM) DEFinition methods developed by the Air Force to support systems engineering activities, and in particular, to support information systems development. These methods have evolved as a distillation of 'good practice' experience by information system developers and are designed to raise the performance level of the novice practitioner to one comparable with that of an expert. IDEF3 is meant to serve as a knowledge acquisition and requirements definition tool that structures the user's understanding of how a given process, event, or system works around process descriptions. A special purpose graphical language accompanying the method serves to highlight temporal precedence and causality relationships relative to the process or event being described

    Im medizinischen Alltag, zu welchem viel Dokumentations- und Recherchearbeit gehört, ist mittlerweile der überwiegende Teil textuell kodierter Information elektronisch verfügbar. Hiermit kommt der Entwicklung leistungsfähiger Methoden zur effizienten Recherche eine vorrangige Bedeutung zu. Bewertet man die Nützlichkeit gängiger Textretrievalsysteme aus dem Blickwinkel der medizinischen Fachsprache, dann mangelt es ihnen an morphologischer Funktionalität (Flexion, Derivation und Komposition), lexikalisch-semantischer Funktionalität und der Fähigkeit zu einer sprachübergreifenden Analyse großer Dokumentenbestände. In der vorliegenden Promotionsschrift werden die theoretischen Grundlagen des MorphoSaurus-Systems (ein Akronym für Morphem-Thesaurus) behandelt. Dessen methodischer Kern stellt ein um Morpheme der medizinischen Fach- und Laiensprache gruppierter Thesaurus dar, dessen Einträge mittels semantischer Relationen sprachübergreifend verknüpft sind. Darauf aufbauend wird ein Verfahren vorgestellt, welches (komplexe) Wörter in Morpheme segmentiert, die durch sprachunabhängige, konzeptklassenartige Symbole ersetzt werden. Die resultierende Repräsentation ist die Basis für das sprachübergreifende, morphemorientierte Textretrieval. Neben der Kerntechnologie wird eine Methode zur automatischen Akquise von Lexikoneinträgen vorgestellt, wodurch bestehende Morphemlexika um weitere Sprachen ergänzt werden. Die Berücksichtigung sprachübergreifender Phänomene führt im Anschluss zu einem neuartigen Verfahren zur Auflösung von semantischen Ambiguitäten. Die Leistungsfähigkeit des morphemorientierten Textretrievals wird im Rahmen umfangreicher, standardisierter Evaluationen empirisch getestet und gängigen Herangehensweisen gegenübergestellt

    Hiding in Plain Sight: Identifying Computational Thinking in the Ontario Elementary School Curriculum

    Given a growing digital economy with complex problems, demands are being made for education to address computational thinking (CT) – an approach to problem solving that draws on the tenets of computer science. We conducted a comprehensive content analysis of the Ontario elementary school curriculum documents for 44 CT-related terms to examine the extent to which CT may already be considered within the curriculum. The quantitative analysis strategy provided frequencies of terms, and a qualitative analysis provided information about how and where terms were being used. As predicted, results showed that while CT terms appeared mostly in Mathematics, and concepts and perspectives were more frequently cited than practices, related terms appeared across almost all disciplines and grades. Findings suggest that CT is already a relevant consideration for educators in terms of concepts and perspectives; however, CT practices should be more widely incorporated to promote 21st century skills across disciplines. Future research would benefit from continued examination of the implementation and assessment of CT and its related concepts, practices, and perspectives

    Acquiring Systems Knowledge with GOOI (Graphical Object-Oriented Interfaces)

    Information system development, in particular expert systems and other knowledge-based approaches, require extensive human expert knowledge. Often, acquiring such knowledge is problematic with regard to efficiently acquiring the expert’s knowledge and translating this knowledge into a system usable form. Knowledge acquisition has long been viewed as the bottleneck of knowledge-based systems and more recently is being recognized as a significant issue in general information systems analysis and design. Object-oriented techniques are presented as a uniform method for overcoming translation difficulties and implementing graphical interfaces. A graphical interface provides a modeling platform that is easily understood by experts and knowledge engineers. The object-oriented base for our tool provides an additional benefit in developing implemented systems by providing a representation independent methodology that can easily be mapped into any other object-oriented based expert system or other object-oriented information systems
