A Web-Based Tutorial for the Instruction of Spanish Pragmatics

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a Web-based tutorial (WBT), developed forinstruction on Spanish pragmatics. The WBT was designed to teachlearners of Spanish as a foreign language about the speech acts ofcomplaints and requests, and the content of the WBT is based on availableempirical evidence about these speech acts. We describe and illustrate, indetail, the format, structure, and various sections of the WBT, including:lessons, ancillary support, and assessment. In addition, some technicalconsiderations in the development of the WBT, such as the user interfacedesign, are also discussed. The paper concludes with suggestions forimplementing this open access WBT in various teaching contexts, as wellas a discussion of directions for future research. Given the paucity ofmaterials available for the instruction of Spanish pragmatics, either inprint or on the Web, the WBT fills an important gap and provides a modelfor the development of future online pragmatics-focused materials

    Reading between the signs

Teaching reading to hearing students, with the supplemental support of American Sign • Language, is a relatively new concept. Many components associated with sign language reinforce basic concepts of English. It teaches individual letter sounds, and names, and many of the signs for words emphasize beginning sounds, as well as meaning. Another important component of sign language is its bodily kinesthetic form of learning. Many students in public schools today are not learning through traditional teaching strategies. Incorporating sign language provides a multi-sensory approach to literal hands-on learning. The following research outlines the principles behind teaching effectively using sign language to hearing students. It provides anecdotal evidence and physiological backing of its success, and provides actual structure of how to implement it within the classroom. Finally, it provides the benefits and positive outcomes sign language can have on students, parents, and teachers

The Art of Language: American Sign Language and Dance

    Get PDF
Dance and American Sign Language (ASL) are two separate entities which share a place in the world as communication through movement. For this project, I extended my knowledge and understanding of two disciplines, ASL and dance, through evidence-based research practices while integrating that research with my creative process and experience within a classroom-based setting. Through this framework of research, coursework, and experimentation, I drew relations between dance and ASL as communication. The results of my research are presented in this report as well as in a piece of choreography I created based on the integration of ASL with a choreographic voice in a piece entitled For Emily. This piece was presented at The University of Akron Terpsichore Dance Club’s spring concert, Spring Into Dance, on April 25-27, 2019. A video of the work can be accessed using this link: https://youtu.be/ifbebplKbwo. This project is intentionally focused on the application of ASL into my choreographic voice for the purpose of extending my ability to create expressiveness and communicate through dance

The present paper involves discovering how native culture affects when learning a language, in this case Spanish, and how far students shift their behavior resembling the Spanish native speakers attitudes. The investigation deals with the analysis of the apologies and requests in Spanish of 42 students from the United States and several European countries, including Spain, who took part voluntarily in this project. The results found that culture may be considered to be a potential agent which is able to interfere in the process of learning. Also, the study showed that participants were able to acquire cultural expressions after spending, at least, 6 months in Spain.

This article submitted to IUPUI ScholarWorks as part of the OASIS Project. Article reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. Permission granted through posted policies on copyright owner’s website or through direct contact with copyright owner. This article provides a selective review of the role of computer mediation in the instruction and development of second language (L2) or interlanguage pragmatic competence within foreign and second language education. Both researchers and practitioners have noted consistently that several aspects of the teaching and tutored learning of L2 pragmatics have been reported as problematic and/or underexplored in the published knowledge base to date, including the availability and authenticity of instructional materials, the provision of opportunities for the performance and practice of L2 pragmatic competence in meaningful interactions, the relative lack of developmental data documenting the precise (and varied) pathways of L2 pragmatic competence over time, and the efficacy of particular pedagogical interventions in classroom-based L2 pragmatics instruction. The role of computer mediation in each of these underexplored areas is examined with a special emphasis on the teaching and learning of L2 pragmatics in Internet-mediated partnerships and on the use of (learner) corpora in L2 pragmatics instruction and research

Citation: Yang, L. (2016). LEARNING TO EXPRESS GRATITUDE IN MANDARIN CHINESE THROUGH WEB-BASED INSTRUCTION. Language Learning & Technology, 20(1), 191-208. Retrieved from ://WOS:000376498900013This study explored the effectiveness of a self-access website as a tool to teach expressions of gratitude to learners of Mandarin Chinese. The web-based instruction included explicit instruction on how to express gratitude appropriately in Mandarin and various consciousness-raising exercises/activities. Two groups of learners who differed in their proficiency in Chinese received instruction for five weeks. The findings indicated that the instruction positively affected the metapragmatic assessment and pragmatic awareness of the learners at two different proficiency levels. In their reflective e-journals, learners also reported the benefits the website provided for their pragmatics learning. Based on the findings, this study proposed implications for the teaching of pragmatics

About 300 years before Christ, Aristotle describes catharsis  in his Poetics to show the impact of true tragedy on the audience. In the nineteenth century, Josef Breuer, the companion of Sigmund Freud, was the first to use Aristotelian concept in the realm of psychology. One template of catharsis is the use of a musical instrument for a tired person to feel relaxed. In literature, one example is Oedipus Rex in which Oedipus unknowingly marries his biological mother. Another example is Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It is often said that reading any work about murder or to see it on the television can be a healing therapy.
