    Developing Real-Time Emergency Management Applications: Methodology for a Novel Programming Model Approach

    The last years have been characterized by the arising of highly distributed computing platforms composed of a heterogeneity of computing and communication resources including centralized high-performance computing architectures (e.g. clusters or large shared-memory machines), as well as multi-/many-core components also integrated into mobile nodes and network facilities. The emerging of computational paradigms such as Grid and Cloud Computing, provides potential solutions to integrate such platforms with data systems, natural phenomena simulations, knowledge discovery and decision support systems responding to a dynamic demand of remote computing and communication resources and services. In this context time-critical applications, notably emergency management systems, are composed of complex sets of application components specialized for executing specific computations, which are able to cooperate in such a way as to perform a global goal in a distributed manner. Since the last years the scientific community has been involved in facing with the programming issues of distributed systems, aimed at the definition of applications featuring an increasing complexity in the number of distributed components, in the spatial distribution and cooperation between interested parties and in their degree of heterogeneity. Over the last decade the research trend in distributed computing has been focused on a crucial objective. The wide-ranging composition of distributed platforms in terms of different classes of computing nodes and network technologies, the strong diffusion of applications that require real-time elaborations and online compute-intensive processing as in the case of emergency management systems, lead to a pronounced tendency of systems towards properties like self-managing, self-organization, self-controlling and strictly speaking adaptivity. Adaptivity implies the development, deployment, execution and management of applications that, in general, are dynamic in nature. Dynamicity concerns the number and the specific identification of cooperating components, the deployment and composition of the most suitable versions of software components on processing and networking resources and services, i.e., both the quantity and the quality of the application components to achieve the needed Quality of Service (QoS). The general reference point for this kind of systems is the Grid paradigm which, by definition, aims to enable the access, selection and aggregation of a variety of distributed and heterogeneous resources and services. However, though notable advancements have been achieved in recent years, current Grid technology is not yet able to supply the needed software tools with the features of high adaptivity, ubiquity, proactivity, self-organization, scalability and performance, interoperability, as well as fault tolerance and security, of the emerging applications. For this reason in this chapter we will study a methodology for designing high-performance computations able to exploit the heterogeneity and dynamicity of distributed environments by expressing adaptivity and QoS-awareness directly at the application level. An effective approach needs to address issues like QoS predictability of different application configurations as well as the predictability of reconfiguration costs. Moreover adaptation strategies need to be developed assuring properties like the stability degree of a reconfiguration decision and the execution optimality (i.e. select reconfigurations accounting proper trade-offs among different QoS objectives). In this chapter we will present the basic points of a novel approach that lays the foundations for future programming model environments for time-critical applications such as emergency management systems. The organization of this chapter is the following. In Section 2 we will compare the existing research works for developing adaptive systems in critical environments, highlighting their drawbacks and inefficiencies. In Section 3, in order to clarify the application scenarios that we are considering, we will present an emergency management system in which the run-time selection of proper application configuration parameters is of great importance for meeting the desired QoS constraints. In Section 4we will describe the basic points of our approach in terms of how compute-intensive operations can be programmed, how they can be dynamically modified and how adaptation strategies can be expressed. In Section 5 our approach will be contextualize to the definition of an adaptive parallel module, which is a building block for composing complex and distributed adaptive computations. Finally in Section 6 we will describe a set of experimental results that show the viability of our approach and in Section 7 we will give the concluding remarks of this chapter

    Parallel Patterns for Adaptive Data Stream Processing

    In recent years our ability to produce information has been growing steadily, driven by an ever increasing computing power, communication rates, hardware and software sensors diffusion. This data is often available in the form of continuous streams and the ability to gather and analyze it to extract insights and detect patterns is a valuable opportunity for many businesses and scientific applications. The topic of Data Stream Processing (DaSP) is a recent and highly active research area dealing with the processing of this streaming data. The development of DaSP applications poses several challenges, from efficient algorithms for the computation to programming and runtime systems to support their execution. In this thesis two main problems will be tackled: * need for high performance: high throughput and low latency are critical requirements for DaSP problems. Applications necessitate taking advantage of parallel hardware and distributed systems, such as multi/manycores or cluster of multicores, in an effective way; * dynamicity: due to their long running nature (24hr/7d), DaSP applications are affected by highly variable arrival rates and changes in their workload characteristics. Adaptivity is a fundamental feature in this context: applications must be able to autonomously scale the used resources to accommodate dynamic requirements and workload while maintaining the desired Quality of Service (QoS) in a cost-effective manner. In the current approaches to the development of DaSP applications are still missing efficient exploitation of intra-operator parallelism as well as adaptations strategies with well known properties of stability, QoS assurance and cost awareness. These are the gaps that this research work tries to fill, resorting to well know approaches such as Structured Parallel Programming and Control Theoretic models. The dissertation runs along these two directions. The first part deals with intra-operator parallelism. A DaSP application can be naturally expressed as a set of operators (i.e. intermediate computations) that cooperate to reach a common goal. If QoS requirements are not met by the current implementation, bottleneck operators must be internally parallelized. We will study recurrent computations in window based stateful operators and propose patterns for their parallel implementation. Windowed operators are the most representative class of stateful data stream operators. Here computations are applied on the most recent received data. Windows are dynamic data structures: they evolve over time in terms of content and, possibly, size. Therefore, with respect to traditional patterns, the DaSP domain requires proper specializations and enhanced features concerning data distribution and management policies for different windowing methods. A structured approach to the problem will reduce the effort and complexity of parallel programming. In addition, it simplifies the reasoning about the performance properties of a parallel solution (e.g. throughput and latency). The proposed patterns exhibit different properties in terms of applicability and profitability that will be discussed and experimentally evaluated. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the proposal and study of predictive strategies and reconfiguration mechanisms for autonomic DaSP operators. Reconfiguration activities can be implemented in a transparent way to the application programmer thanks to the exploitation of parallel paradigms with well known structures. Furthermore, adaptation strategies may take advantage of the QoS predictability of the used parallel solution. Autonomous operators will be driven by means of a Model Predictive Control approach, with the intent of giving QoS assurances in terms of throughput or latency in a resource-aware manner. An experimental section will show the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of execution costs reduction as well as the stability degree of a system reconfiguration. Bu sözdiziminin öğrenilmesi ve kullanılması son derece kolaydır. Son olarak iki temel paralel programlama tipi, paylaşılan bellek ve mesajlaşma, iki farklı tipte algoritma kullanılarak karşılaştırılmıştır. Paralel makineler için Almanya nın Aachen Üniversitesi nin SMP ağı ve Ulakbim in dağıtık bellekli paralel makineleri kullanılmıştır.Parallel computing, also called high-performance computing, refers to solving problems faster by using multiple processors simultaneously. Nowadays, almost every computationally-intensive problem that one could imagine is tried to be implemented in parallel. This thesis is aimed at discussing high-performance software for scientific or engineering applications. The term parallel programming systems here means libraries, languages, compiler directives or other means through which a programmer can express a parallel algorithm. To design high performance programs, there are two keys for the programmer: to understand the problem and find a solution for parallelization, and to decide on the right system for the implementation, which requires a good knowledge about existing parallel programming systems. The programmer, after having understood the problem, has to choose between many systems, some of which are closely related, whereas others have big differences. This thesis describes and classifies existing parallel programming systems, thus bringing existing surveys up to date. It describes a wiki-based web portal for collecting information about most recent systems, which has been developed as part of the thesis. A special syntax and a visualization tool has been developed. This syntax and tool allow users to have their own categorization scheme. Fourth, it compares two major programming styles message passing and shared memory with two different algorithms in order show performance differences of these styles.     Multi-Quality Auto-Tuning by Contract Negotiation

    A characteristic challenge of software development is the management of omnipresent change. Classically, this constant change is driven by customers changing their requirements. The wish to optimally leverage available resources opens another source of change: the software systems environment. Software is tailored to specific platforms (e.g., hardware architectures) resulting in many variants of the same software optimized for different environments. If the environment changes, a different variant is to be used, i.e., the system has to reconfigure to the variant optimized for the arisen situation. The automation of such adjustments is subject to the research community of self-adaptive systems. The basic principle is a control loop, as known from control theory. The system (and environment) is continuously monitored, the collected data is analyzed and decisions for or against a reconfiguration are computed and realized. Central problems in this field, which are addressed in this thesis, are the management of interdependencies between non-functional properties of the system, the handling of multiple criteria subject to decision making and the scalability. In this thesis, a novel approach to self-adaptive software--Multi-Quality Auto-Tuning (MQuAT)--is presented, which provides design and operation principles for software systems which automatically provide the best possible utility to the user while producing the least possible cost. For this purpose, a component model has been developed, enabling the software developer to design and implement self-optimizing software systems in a model-driven way. This component model allows for the specification of the structure as well as the behavior of the system and is capable of covering the runtime state of the system. The notion of quality contracts is utilized to cover the non-functional behavior and, especially, the dependencies between non-functional properties of the system. At runtime the component model covers the runtime state of the system. This runtime model is used in combination with the contracts to generate optimization problems in different formalisms (Integer Linear Programming (ILP), Pseudo-Boolean Optimization (PBO), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Multi-Objective Integer Linear Programming (MOILP)). Standard solvers are applied to derive solutions to these problems, which represent reconfiguration decisions, if the identified configuration differs from the current. Each approach is empirically evaluated in terms of its scalability showing the feasibility of all approaches, except for ACO, the superiority of ILP over PBO and the limits of all approaches: 100 component types for ILP, 30 for PBO, 10 for ACO and 30 for 2-objective MOILP. In presence of more than two objective functions the MOILP approach is shown to be infeasible

    Pattern Operators for Grid Environments

    The definition and programming of distributed applications has become a major research issue due to the increasing availability of (large scale) distributed platforms and the requirements posed by the economical globalization. However, such a task requires a huge effort due to the complexity of the distributed environments: large amount of users may communicate and share information across different authority domains; moreover, the “execution environment” or “computations” are dynamic since the number of users and the computational infrastructure change in time. Grid environments, in particular, promise to be an answer to deal with such complexity, by providing high performance execution support to large amount of users, and resource sharing across different organizations. Nevertheless, programming in Grid environments is still a difficult task. There is a lack of high level programming paradigms and support tools that may guide the application developer and allow reusability of state-of-the-art solutions. Specifically, the main goal of the work presented in this thesis is to contribute to the simplification of the development cycle of applications for Grid environments by bringing structure and flexibility to three stages of that cycle through a commonmodel. The stages are: the design phase, the execution phase, and the reconfiguration phase. The common model is based on the manipulation of patterns through pattern operators, and the division of both patterns and operators into two categories, namely structural and behavioural. Moreover, both structural and behavioural patterns are first class entities at each of the aforesaid stages. At the design phase, patterns can be manipulated like other first class entities such as components. This allows a more structured way to build applications by reusing and composing state-of-the-art patterns. At the execution phase, patterns are units of execution control: it is possible, for example, to start or stop and to resume the execution of a pattern as a single entity. At the reconfiguration phase, patterns can also be manipulated as single entities with the additional advantage that it is possible to perform a structural reconfiguration while keeping some of the behavioural constraints, and vice-versa. For example, it is possible to replace a behavioural pattern, which was applied to some structural pattern, with another behavioural pattern. In this thesis, besides the proposal of the methodology for distributed application development, as sketched above, a definition of a relevant set of pattern operators was made. The methodology and the expressivity of the pattern operators were assessed through the development of several representative distributed applications. To support this validation, a prototype was designed and implemented, encompassing some relevant patterns and a significant part of the patterns operators defined. This prototype was based in the Triana environment; Triana supports the development and deployment of distributed applications in the Grid through a dataflow-based programming model. Additionally, this thesis also presents the analysis of a mapping of some operators for execution control onto the Distributed Resource Management Application API (DRMAA).     Methods for Reducing Monitoring Overhead in Runtime Verification

    Runtime verification is a lightweight technique that serves to complement existing approaches, such as formal methods and testing, to ensure system correctness. In runtime verification, monitors are synthesized to check a system at run time against a set of properties the system is expected to satisfy. Runtime verification may be used to determine software faults before and after system deployment. The monitor(s) can be synthesized to notify, steer and/or perform system recovery from detected software faults at run time. The research and proposed methods presented in this thesis aim to reduce the monitoring overhead of runtime verification in terms of memory and execution time by leveraging time-triggered techniques for monitoring system events. Traditionally, runtime verification frameworks employ event-triggered monitors, where the invocation of the monitor occurs after every system event. Because systems events can be sporadic or bursty in nature, event-triggered monitoring behaviour is difficult to predict. Time-triggered monitors, on the other hand, periodically preempt and process system events, making monitoring behaviour predictable. However, software system state reconstruction is not guaranteed (i.e., missed state changes/events between samples). The first part of this thesis analyzes three heuristics that efficiently solve the NP-complete problem of minimizing the amount of memory required to store system state changes to guarantee accurate state reconstruction. The experimental results demonstrate that adopting near-optimal algorithms do not greatly change the memory consumption and execution time of monitored programs; hence, NP-completeness is likely not an obstacle for time-triggered runtime verification. The second part of this thesis introduces a novel runtime verification technique called hybrid runtime verification. Hybrid runtime verification enables the monitor to toggle between event- and time-triggered modes of operation. The aim of this approach is to reduce the overall runtime monitoring overhead with respect to execution time. Minimizing the execution time overhead by employing hybrid runtime verification is not in NP. An integer linear programming heuristic is formulated to determine near-optimal hybrid monitoring schemes. Experimental results show that the heuristic typically selects monitoring schemes that are equal to or better than naively selecting exclusively one operation mode for monitoring

    A Control-Theoretic Methodology for Adaptive Structured Parallel Computations

    Adaptivity for distributed parallel applications is an essential feature whose impor- tance has been assessed in many research fields (e.g. scientific computations, large- scale real-time simulation systems and emergency management applications). Especially for high-performance computing, this feature is of special interest in order to properly and promptly respond to time-varying QoS requirements, to react to uncontrollable environ- mental effects influencing the underlying execution platform and to efficiently deal with highly irregular parallel problems. In this scenario the Structured Parallel Programming paradigm is a cornerstone for expressing adaptive parallel programs: the high-degree of composability of parallelization schemes, their QoS predictability formally expressed by performance models, are basic tools in order to introduce dynamic reconfiguration processes of adaptive applications. These reconfigurations are not only limited to imple- mentation aspects (e.g. parallelism degree modifications), but also parallel versions with different structures can be expressed for the same computation, featuring different levels of performance, memory utilization, energy consumption, and exploitation of the memory hierarchies. Over the last decade several programming models and research frameworks have been developed aimed at the definition of tools and strategies for expressing adaptive parallel applications. Notwithstanding this notable research effort, properties like the optimal- ity of the application execution and the stability of control decisions are not sufficiently studied in the existing work. For this reason this thesis exploits a pioneer research in the context of providing formal theoretical tools founded on Control Theory and Game Theory techniques. Based on these approaches, we introduce a formal model for control- ling distributed parallel applications represented by computational graphs of structured parallelism schemes (also called skeleton-based parallelism). Starting out from the performance predictability of structured parallelism schemes, in this thesis we provide a formalization of the concept of adaptive parallel module per- forming structured parallel computations. The module behavior is described in terms of a Hybrid System abstraction and reconfigurations are driven by a Predictive Control ap- proach. Experimental results show the effectiveness of this work, in terms of execution cost reduction as well as the stability degree of a system reconfiguration: i.e. how long a reconfiguration choice is useful for targeting the required QoS levels. This thesis also faces with the issue of controlling large-scale distributed applications composed of several interacting adaptive components. After a panoramic view of the existing control-theoretic approaches (e.g. based on decentralized, distributed or hierar- chical structures of controllers), we introduce a methodology for the distributed predictive control. For controlling computational graphs, the overall control problem consists in a set of coupled control sub-problems for each application module. The decomposition is- sue has a twofold nature: first of all we need to model the coupling relationships between control sub-problems, furthermore we need to introduce proper notions of negotiation and convergence in the control decisions collectively taken by the parallel modules of the application graph. This thesis provides a formalization through basic concepts of Non-cooperative Games and Cooperative Optimization. In the notable context of the dis- tributed control of performance and resource utilization, we exploit a formal description of the control problem providing results for equilibrium point existence and the compari- son of the control optimality with different adaptation strategies and interaction protocols. Discussions and a first validation of the proposed techniques are exploited through exper- iments performed in a simulation environment

    Locality-driven checkpoint and recovery

    Checkpoint and recovery are important fault-tolerance techniques for distributed systems. The two categories of existing strategies incur unacceptable performance cost either at run time or upon failure recovery, when applied to large-scale distributed systems. In particular, the large number of messages and processes in these systems causes either considerable checkpoint as well as logging overhead, or catastrophic global-wise recovery effect. This thesis proposes a locality-driven strategy for efficiently checkpointing and recovering such systems with both affordable runtime cost and controllable failure recoverability. Messages establish dependencies between distributed processes, which can be either preserved by coordinated checkpoints or removed via logging. Existing strategies enforce a uniform handling policy for all message dependencies, and hence gains advantage at one end but bears disadvantage at the other. In this thesis, a generic theory of Quasi-Atomic Recovery has been formulated to accommodate message handling requirements of both kinds, and to allow using different message handling methods together. Quasi-atomicity of recovery blocks implies proper confinement of recoveries, and thus enables localization of checkpointing and recovery around such a block and consequently a hybrid strategy with combined advantages from both ends. A strategy of group checkpointing with selective logging has been proposed, based on the observation of message localization around 'locality regions' in distributed systems. In essence, a group-wise coordinated checkpoint is created around such a region and only the few inter-region messages are logged subsequently. Runtime overhead is optimized due to largely reduced logging efforts, and recovery spread is as localized as region-wise. Various protocols have been developed to provide trade-offs between flexibility and performance. Also proposed is the idea of process clone that can be used to effectively remove program-order recovery dependencies among successive group checkpoints and thus to stop inter-group recovery spread. Distributed executions exhibit locality of message interactions. Such locality originates from resolving distributed dependency localization via message passing, and appears as a hierarchical 'region-transition' pattern. A bottom-up approach has been proposed to identify those regions, by detecting popular recurrence patterns from individual processes as 'locality intervals', and then composing them into 'locality regions' based on their tight message coupling relations between each other. Experiments conducted on real-life applications have shown the existence of hierarchical locality regions and have justified the feasibility of this approach. Performance optimization of group checkpoint strategies has to do with their uses of locality. An abstract performance measure has been-proposed to properly integrate both runtime overhead and failure recoverability in a region-wise marner. Taking this measure as the optimization objective, a greedy heuristic has been introduced to decompose a given distributed execution into optimized regions. Analysis implies that an execution pattern with good locality leads to good optimized performance, and the locality pattern itself can serve as a good candidate for the optimal decomposition. Consequently, checkpoint protocols have been developed to efficiently identify optimized regions in such an execution, with assistance of either design-time or runtime knowledge
