    A Survey on Evolutionary Computation for Computer Vision and Image Analysis: Past, Present, and Future Trends

    Computer vision (CV) is a big and important field in artificial intelligence covering a wide range of applications. Image analysis is a major task in CV aiming to extract, analyse and understand the visual content of images. However, imagerelated tasks are very challenging due to many factors, e.g., high variations across images, high dimensionality, domain expertise requirement, and image distortions. Evolutionary computation (EC) approaches have been widely used for image analysis with significant achievement. However, there is no comprehensive survey of existing EC approaches to image analysis. To fill this gap, this paper provides a comprehensive survey covering all essential EC approaches to important image analysis tasks including edge detection, image segmentation, image feature analysis, image classification, object detection, and others. This survey aims to provide a better understanding of evolutionary computer vision (ECV) by discussing the contributions of different approaches and exploring how and why EC is used for CV and image analysis. The applications, challenges, issues, and trends associated to this research field are also discussed and summarised to provide further guidelines and opportunities for future research

    Novel methods for posture-based human action recognition and activity anomaly detection

    PhD ThesisArti cial Intelligence (AI) for Human Action Recognition (HAR) and Human Activity Anomaly Detection (HAAD) is an active and exciting research eld. Video-based HAR aims to classify human actions and video-based HAAD aims to detect abnormal human activities within data. However, a human is an extremely complex subject and a non-rigid object in the video, which provides great challenges for Computer Vision and Signal Processing. Relevant applications elds are surveillance and public monitoring, assisted living, robotics, human-to-robot interaction, prosthetics, gaming, video captioning, and sports analysis. The focus of this thesis is on the posture-related HAR and HAAD. The aim is to design computationally-e cient, machine and deep learning-based HAR and HAAD methods which can run in multiple humans monitoring scenarios. This thesis rstly contributes two novel 3D Histogram of Oriented Gradient (3D-HOG) driven frameworks for silhouette-based HAR. The 3D-HOG state-of-the-art limitations, e.g. unweighted local body areas based processing and unstable performance over di erent training rounds, are addressed. The proposed methods achieve more accurate results than the baseline, outperforming the state-of-the-art. Experiments are conducted on publicly available datasets, alongside newly recorded data. This thesis also contributes a new algorithm for human poses-based HAR. In particular, the proposed human poses-based HAR is among the rst, few, simultaneous attempts which have been conducted at the time. The proposed HAR algorithm, named ActionXPose, is based on Convolutional Neural Networks and Long Short-Term Memory. It turns out to be more reliable and computationally advantageous when compared to human silhouette-based approaches. The ActionXPose's exibility also allows crossdatasets processing and more robustness to occlusions scenarios. Extensive evaluation on publicly available datasets demonstrates the e cacy of ActionXPose over the state-of-the-art. Moreover, newly recorded data, i.e. Intelligent Sensing Lab Dataset (ISLD), is also contributed and exploited to further test ActionXPose in real-world, non-cooperative scenarios. The last set of contributions in this thesis regards pose-driven, combined HAR and HAAD algorithms. Motivated by ActionXPose achievements, this thesis contributes a new algorithm to simultaneously extract deep-learningbased features from human-poses, RGB Region of Interests (ROIs) and detected objects positions. The proposed method outperforms the stateof- the-art in both HAR and HAAD. The HAR performance is extensively tested on publicly available datasets, including the contributed ISLD dataset. Moreover, to compensate for the lack of data in the eld, this thesis also contributes three new datasets for human-posture and objects-positions related HAAD, i.e. BMbD, M-BMdD and JBMOPbD datasets

    Seeking the Leviathan, the General Will and the Invisible Hand in Rural Guinea, West Africa: A Science of Human Nature

    The dissertation builds a bridge from the social-philosophical works of Hobbes, Rousseau, and Smith to current game theoretical models explaining social order to two empirical applications in a rural region of Guinea. The work focuses on the central role of natural resources for human societies and uses two empirical studies to test general hypotheses on the drivers of the sustainable exploitation and the equitable distribution of natural resources. The work strictly follows a quantitative empirical approach. After discussing the methodological foundations of statistical causal analysis in a first step, the various approaches are evaluated in a simulation study. Finally, the most successful of these approaches finds its application in the analysis of the empirical data, which was collected during field research in Guinea. In the observational study, socioeconomic data are combined with environmental data to model the influence of humans on the occurrence of wild species that are exploited for economic purposes in the study area. In the experimental study, socioeconomic data is linked to experimental data from a resource distribution game to identify factors affecting the people’s behavior when sharing a common natural resource. Both the exploitation of wild species and the sharing of a natural resource show that the social context is crucial for the understanding of human behavior, as postulated by Hobbes, Rousseau, and Smith: reputation, market integration, inequality and homogeneity of the population, as well as the salience of moral norms and property rights are essential dimensions.Die Dissertation widmet sich der zentralen Rolle von natĂŒrlichen Ressourcen fĂŒr menschliche Gesellschaften. Anhand zweier empirischer Studien werden allgemeine Hypothesen zu den Determinanten der nachhaltigen Ausbeutung und gerechten Verteilung von natĂŒrlichen Ressourcen getestet. Dabei wird in der Arbeit eine BrĂŒcke von den Werken der Sozialphilosophen Hobbes, Rousseau und Smith, ĂŒber aktuelle spieltheoretische Modelle zur ErklĂ€rung sozialer Ordnung, hin zu zwei empirischen Anwendungen in einer lĂ€ndlichen Region Guineas geschlagen. Die Arbeit folgt strikt einem empirischen quantitativen Ansatz.     The Role of Social Capital in Human Evolution: lessons from BaYaka Hunter-Gatherers

    Many of Homo sapiens’ defining characteristics relate to our sociality—our advanced mind reading abilities; sophisticated languages; diverse cultural norms and practices that manifest as highly differentiated rituals and religions; and ‘hyper-cooperative’ tendencies. Thus, understanding the evolution of human sociality is indispensable for a complete understanding of humanity. One question that remains unanswered is how individual differences in social integration within the group affect biological fitness. I explore this question by studying BaYaka hunter-gatherers living in the rainforests of Northern Congo. For the vast majority of our species’ history we lived as hunter-gatherers, hence such populations offer a valuable insight into human evolution. The overarching hypothesis presented is that cooperation is a fundamental means by which hunter-gatherers surmount the ecological challenges they face. Therefore, if certain individuals have superior access to cooperation from other group members, which I refer to as social capital, they are likely to achieve higher fitness. I use childcare practices as a case study to demonstrate how essential cooperation is for the BaYaka. Employing a novel method, using wireless sensing devices to track proximate interactions, I find mothers only account for ~25% of the proximate interactions of 0–4 year olds. The analyses also show that this form of cooperation in childcare is preferentially directed towards kin and reciprocal partners. I use economic gift games to measure social capital and confirm that it varies considerably between group members. Moreover, I find that it is associated with larger food sharing networks and higher body-mass index, indicating it enhances one’s ability to buffer the food risk inherent with hunter-gatherer subsistence. Additionally, I show that social capital positively predicts polygynous marriage in men (whereas physical attributes do not), as well as age-specific fertility in women. Finally, I find some evidence for a heritable component of social capital, suggesting that the evolutionary advantages it confers may accrue over multiple generations. These results have important implications for our understanding of the processes underlying human social evolution. Additionally, they help to explain how fitness variance emerges in egalitarian hunter-gatherers, and why social integration is consistently linked with mental and physical health
