Convertible, transformable and collapsible furniture solutions for cramped city living / Abu Ali, Siti Salwa Isa and Wan Zaiyana Md Yusof

Generally, Collapsible, Convertible and Transformable furniture can provide a creative home decor style while also giving the versatility is usual the first consideration. There are twelve principles of convertible that is useful as theoretical to design collapsible furniture added with the value of convertible and transformable function and purpose. The design of Collapsible, Convertible and Transformable furniture went through three stages of designing process; analysis, synthesis and evaluation or more elementary than this, merely named divergence, transformation and convergence stages. This study is to transform an idea of convertible, transformable and collapsible furniture as a design solution to small space such as low and medium cost of flat and apartment to a final prototype. To externalize the action research process, design methods were chosen as the central to the methodology in this study. Using Observation as Method of Exploring Design Situation, Two-axis Chart as Method of Searching for Ideas, Alexander's Method of Determining Components of Method of Exploring Problem Structure and Selecting Criteria as Method of Evaluation, the results revealed four different designs of Collapsible, Convertible and Transformable were developed and four models-making were built as to be developed for future research by researcher to be commercialized

Perancangan Living Room Set Furniture Hemat Ruang Bergaya De Stijl Pada Apartemen

Keterbatasan lahan menyebabkan masyarakat masa kini kesulitan untuk mencari tempat dengan ruang yang luas, selain itu harga lahan yang semakin menaik menyebabkan kebanyakan orang untuk memilih tinggal di hunian sempit contohnya rumah apartemen. Apartemen merupakan salah satu pilihan hunian yang digemari oleh masyarakat modern. Area tempat tinggal yang terbatas serta kebutuhan penduduk dalam beraktifitas menjadi permasalahan bagi penghuni small living place. Keterbatasan ini memunculkan ide untuk merancang living room set furniture untuk apartemen bertipe studio yang bersifat convertible dan transformable, dari living room coffee table menjadi study table maupun dressing table dengan dua buah hidden stool. Menggunakan gaya De Stijl dengan material kayu sebagai konstruksi dasar yang ditargetkan untuk masyarakat perkotaan masa kini atau urban people. Maka dari itu, konsep design furniture hemat ruang dapat menjadi solusi untuk permasalahan tersebut. Memanfaatkan furniture hemat ruang yang dapat memberikan lebih banyak area kosong dapat membantu meningkatkan kenyamanan dan kerapian bahkan di hunian sempit. Investigando la percepción de las ventajas medioambientales de un producto adaptable

The aim of adaptable design is to create products that can easily adapt to different needs. The objective if this study is to analyze the effectivenes in communication to promote an adaptable baby stroller, in order to know the user perception of the advantages derived from its adaptability, as well as the environmental ones, and if there is correlation between them. It is also intended to determine whether age or previous experience with this type of product can influence this perception. To this effect, a study with 54 participants has been conducted. Results show that users percieve the advantages and find the adaptable design interesting. Valuation of the advantages of the product is affected by previous user experience with the need for adaptability. Valuation of the environmental benefits is independent from the degree of experiense, as well as from the age of the participants (between 30 and 45 years old).El diseño adaptable tiene como objetivo crear productos que puedan adaptarse fácilmente a diferentes necesidades. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar la efectividad en la comunicación realizada para promover un cochecito de bebé adaptable, en aras de conocer la percepción que tienen los usuarios tanto de las ventajas derivadas de su adaptabilidad como de las medioambientales y si existe una correlación entre ambas. También se pretende determinar si la edad o experiencia previa con este tipo de productos influyen en esta percepción. Para ello, se ha realizado un estudio con 54 participantes. Los resultados muestran que los usuarios perciben las ventajas y consideran interesante el diseño adaptable. La estimación de las ventajas del producto se ve afectada por la experiencia previa del usuario con la necesidad de adaptabilidad. La estimación de los beneficios ambientales es independiente tanto del grado de experiencia como de la edad de los participantes (entre 30 y 45 años)

On the Flexibility of Deployable Dome Structures and their Application in Architecture

In this paper we discuss flexibility and applicability of deployable dome structures in contemporary architecture. A deployable dome is a spatial structure derived from appropriately connected planar polygonal panels. Nowadays, deployable domes are little researched comparing to other deployable structures, such as pseudo-cylinders, for example. When designing these configurations, either changeable supports' spans or strain of some structural elements might occur, depending on the underlying geometrical analysis. Such occurrences, usually being undesirable, can be avoided by the adequate geometrical solution which can also satisfy various sizes of the structures. Therefore, they could answer the purpose both in architectural and urban design. Thus, choosing suitable dimension of the structure, numerous applications can be obtained, starting from street furniture to large scale convertible structures for covering open spaces

EKSPLORASI GAYA DE STIJL PADA LIVING ROOM FURNITURE

Masyarakat masa kini memiliki kesulitan dalam mencari hunian yang relatif luas, hal ini disebabkan harga lahan yang semakin melonjak akibat keterbatasan lahan. Maka dari itu, masyarakat urban lebih memilih tinggal di hunian sempit seperti apartemen. Namun, ditemukannya masalah akibat tinggal di hunian dengan area yang sempit. Salah satunya yaitu sempitnya lahan menyebabkan masyarakat kesulitan untuk menggunakan beberapa jenis furnitur untuk mendukung berbagai aktivitas kesehariannya. Demi mengatasi keterbatasan tersebut, muncul ide untuk merancang mebel dengan konsep hemat ruang dan konvertibel. Hemat ruang berarti merancang mebel yang dapat memiliki banyak fungsi sehingga menghemat area gerak pada lantai. Sedangkan konvertibel berarti mebel dapat diubah bentuknya sesuai dengan sistem yang dirancang untuk menyesuaikan kebutuhan user. Sifatnya yang konvertibel ini menyebabkan mebel menjadi lebih efisien, fleksibel, dan praktis dalam penggunaannya sehingga dapat mendukung aktivitas masyarakat hanya dalam satu mebel

Flexible Learning Spaces Evaluation Report

City University, London is tackling the challenge of ensuring the learning spaces provided are able to meet the anticipated increase in technology usage and prevalent pedagogies. There is no longer a standard classroom design that will achieve this goal and therefore it is imperative to pilot and explore a variety of flexible learning spaces. This report feeds back on an evaluation of two flexible learning space approaches piloted in the autumn term of 2012 as alternatives to traditional computer rooms laid out in rows with the lecturer positioned at the front. These approaches are: pop-up computers on circular tables in AG24A; and laptop lockers enabling staff to borrow laptops to use with students on node chairs in AG24B. Each of these approaches also supported the use of students’ own devices in learning spaces. These methods were evaluated using surveys, interviews and an open house forum. The report shares the findings and recommendations from this evaluation and future plans for learning spaces
