Composite Learning Control With Application to Inverted Pendulums
Composite adaptive control (CAC) that integrates direct and indirect adaptive
control techniques can achieve smaller tracking errors and faster parameter
convergence compared with direct and indirect adaptive control techniques.
However, the condition of persistent excitation (PE) still has to be satisfied
to guarantee parameter convergence in CAC. This paper proposes a novel model
reference composite learning control (MRCLC) strategy for a class of affine
nonlinear systems with parametric uncertainties to guarantee parameter
convergence without the PE condition. In the composite learning, an integral
during a moving-time window is utilized to construct a prediction error, a
linear filter is applied to alleviate the derivation of plant states, and both
the tracking error and the prediction error are applied to update parametric
estimates. It is proven that the closed-loop system achieves global
exponential-like stability under interval excitation rather than PE of
regression functions. The effectiveness of the proposed MRCLC has been verified

Momentum Control with Hierarchical Inverse Dynamics on a Torque-Controlled Humanoid
Hierarchical inverse dynamics based on cascades of quadratic programs have
been proposed for the control of legged robots. They have important benefits
but to the best of our knowledge have never been implemented on a torque
controlled humanoid where model inaccuracies, sensor noise and real-time
computation requirements can be problematic. Using a reformulation of existing
algorithms, we propose a simplification of the problem that allows to achieve
real-time control. Momentum-based control is integrated in the task hierarchy
and a LQR design approach is used to compute the desired associated closed-loop
behavior and improve performance. Extensive experiments on various balancing
and tracking tasks show very robust performance in the face of unknown
disturbances, even when the humanoid is standing on one foot. Our results
demonstrate that hierarchical inverse dynamics together with momentum control

Disturbance observer-based neural network control of cooperative multiple manipulators with input saturation
In this paper, the complex problems of internal forces and position control are studied simultaneously and a disturbance observer-based radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) control scheme is proposed to: 1) estimate the unknown parameters accurately; 2) approximate the disturbance experienced by the system due to input saturation; and 3) simultaneously improve the robustness of the system. More specifically, the proposed scheme utilizes disturbance observers, neural network (NN) collaborative control with an adaptive law, and full state feedback. Utilizing Lyapunov stability principles, it is shown that semiglobally uniformly bounded stability is guaranteed for all controlled signals of the closed-loop system. The effectiveness of the proposed controller as predicted by the theoretical analysis is verified by comparative experimental studies
Reinforcement Learning, Intelligent Control and their Applications in Connected and Autonomous Vehicles
Reinforcement learning (RL) has attracted large attention over the past few years. Recently, we developed a data-driven algorithm to solve predictive cruise control (PCC) and games output regulation problems. This work integrates our recent contributions to the application of RL in game theory, output regulation problems, robust control, small-gain theory and PCC. The algorithm was developed for adaptive optimal output regulation of uncertain linear systems, and uncertain partially linear systems to reject disturbance and also force the output of the systems to asymptotically track a reference. In the PCC problem, we determined the reference velocity for each autonomous vehicle in the platoon using the traffic information broadcasted from the lights to reduce the vehicles\u27 trip time. Then we employed the algorithm to design an approximate optimal controller for the vehicles. This controller is able to regulate the headway, velocity and acceleration of each vehicle to the desired values. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the algorithms
Decentralised control for complex systems - An invited survey
© 2014 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd. With the advancement of science and technology, practical systems are becoming more complex. Decentralised control has been recognised as a practical, feasible and powerful tool for application to large scale interconnected systems. In this paper, past and recent results relating to decentralised control of complex large scale interconnected systems are reviewed. Decentralised control based on modern control approaches such as variable structure techniques, adaptive control and backstepping approaches are discussed. It is well known that system structure can be employed to reduce conservatism in the control design and decentralised control for interconnected systems with similar and symmetric structure is explored. Decentralised control of singular large scale systems is also reviewed in this paper
RISE-Based Integrated Motion Control of Autonomous Ground Vehicles With Asymptotic Prescribed Performance
This article investigates the integrated lane-keeping and roll control for autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs) considering the transient performance and system disturbances. The robust integral of the sign of error (RISE) control strategy is proposed to achieve the lane-keeping control purpose with rollover prevention, by guaranteeing the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system, attenuating systematic disturbances, and maintaining the controlled states within the prescribed performance boundaries. Three contributions have been made in this article: 1) a new prescribed performance function (PPF) that does not require accurate initial errors is proposed to guarantee the tracking errors restricted within the predefined asymptotic boundaries; 2) a modified neural network (NN) estimator which requires fewer adaptively updated parameters is proposed to approximate the unknown vertical dynamics; and 3) the improved RISE control based on PPF is proposed to achieve the integrated control objective, which analytically guarantees both the controller continuity and closed-loop system asymptotic stability by integrating the signum error function. The overall system stability is proved with the Lyapunov function. The controller effectiveness and robustness are finally verified by comparative simulations using two representative driving maneuvers, based on the high-fidelity CarSim-Simulink simulation
