    Bit Error Rate and Signal to Noise Ratio Performance Evaluation of OFDM System with QPSK and QAM M-array Modulation Scheme in Rayleigh, Rician and AWGN Channel Using MATLAB/Simulink

    The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a practical application of both amplitude and phase modulation scheme and has taking its place in Multiplexing Techniques where a number of independent message signal are at the same time transmitted over a single channel. OFDM is beneficial in transmission with high data rate and better performance. High data rates are achieved by the use of multiple carriers and performance improvement. This paper is based on the QPSK and QAM of Different Modulation order. The performance Evaluation is done using the Bit Error Rate (BER) Against the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) parameters which shows a low BER to High SNR.  At the end of the work, it was found out that the QPSK has more better performance in OFDM system than the QAM. QPSK has lower BER than the QAM in AWGN, Rayleigh and Rician channel. The performance of QPSK in OFDM is better than the QAM in the OFDM system. The simulation was done using MATLAB/SIMULINK.     Detection of OFDM Signals Using Pilot Tones and Applications to Spectrum Sensing for Cognitive Radio Systems

    Nowadays there are an increasing number of wireless devices which support wireless networking and the need for higher data rate communication is increasing rabidly. As more and more systems go wireless, approaching technologies will face spectral crowding and existence of wireless devices will be an important issue. Because of the limited bandwidth availability, accepting the request for higher capacity and data rates is a challenging task, demanding advanced technologies that can offers new methods of using the available radio spectrum. Cognitive radio introduces a key solution to the spectral increasing issue by presenting the opportunistic usage of spectrum that is not heavily occupied by licensed users. It is a latest idea in wireless communications systems which objective to have more adaptive and aware communication devices which can make better use of available natural resources. Cognitive radio appears to be an attractive solution to the spectral congestion problem by introducing the notion of opportunistic spectrum use. Cognitive radios can operate as a secondary systems on top of existence system which are called primary (or licensed) systems. In this case, secondary (cognitive) users need to detect the unused spectrum in order to be able to access it. Because of its many advantages, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been successfully used in numerous wireless standards and technologies. It\u27s shown that OFDM will play an important role in realizing the cognitive radio concept as well by providing a proven, scalable, and adaptive technology for air interface. Researches show that OFDM technique is considered as a candidate for cognitive radio systems. The objective of this dissertation is to explore detecting of OFDM modulated signals using pilot tones information. Specifically we applying Time-Domain Symbol Cross-Correlation (TDSC) method in the confect of actual 4G wireless standards such as WIMAX and LTE. This detection is only based upon the knowledge of pilot structures without knowledge of received signal so that, it can be performed on every portion of the received signal. The approach induces Cross-Correlation between pilots subcarriers and exploits the deterministic and periodic characteristics of pilot mapping in the time frequency domain

    A Mathematical Approach for Hidden Node Problem in Cognitive Radio Networks

    Cognitive radio (CR) technology has emerged as a realistic solution to the spectrum scarcity problem in present day wireless networks. A major challenge in CR radio networks is the hidden node problem, which is the inability of the CR nodes to detect the primary user. This paper proposes energy detector-based distributed sequential cooperative spectrum sensing over Nakagami-m fading, as a tool to solve the hidden node problem. The derivation of energy detection performance over Nakagami-m fading channel is presented. Since the observation represents a random variable, likelihood ratio test (LRT) is known to be optimal in this type of detection problem. The LRT is implemented using the Neyman-Pearson Criterion (maximizing the probability of detection but at a constraint of false alarm probability). The performance of the proposed method has been evaluated both by numerical analysis and simulations. The effect of cooperation among a group of CR nodes and system parameters such as SNR, detection threshold and number of samples per CR nodes is investigated. Results show improved detection performance by implementing the proposed model

    Channel characteristics for intra-vehicle wireless communications

    Vehicles are continuously being improved to enhance the driving experience by integrating new technologies. Recent luxury vehicles may have over 70 Electronic Control Units (ECU) and 2200 cables. It is estimated that the number of ECUs and connections between ECUs and sensors will continuously increase to meet growing network requirements. The wire harness is the third most expensive component in a vehicle, reducing the number of cables through wireless communications would consequently result in space, cost, and fuel savings. However, the behaviour of the intra-vehicle channel and suitable wireless network technologies for an intra-vehicle network have not been fully addressed. In this research, the intra-vehicle narrowband loss performance in non-line-of-sight and line-of-sight condition was investigated and compared through real field tests. The results indicate that fading behaviour is primarily caused by small-scale rather than large-scale fading. An empirical-based path loss model is proposed with its parameters extracted from the real field test measurements. Further analysis of the small-scale fading through Rician K-factor reveals the dependence of the K-factor with distance and locations. These investigations suggest that for a narrowband system whereby the bandwidth of the transmitted signal is lower than the coherence bandwidth; the channel can be modelled using Rician fading. Furthermore, the wideband and ultra-wideband channel was characteristics through a real field tests. The results demonstrate that the multipath fading of intra-vehicle channel is much worse than other type of environments such as factory workshops and hospitals. Finally, the time-varying characteristics of the intra-vehicle channel, tested under various scenarios, suggest that the channel's coherence time is primarily impacted by passenger motion in the vehicle. Considering both the channel loss and time-varying characteristics, the performance trade-off's of the cooperative communication system against retransmission was evaluated

    Bit error rate estimation in WiMAX communications at vehicular speeds using Nakagami-m fading model

    The wireless communication industry has experienced a rapid technological evolution from its basic first generation (1G) wireless systems to the latest fourth generation (4G) wireless broadband systems. Wireless broadband systems are becoming increasingly popular with consumers and the technological strength of 4G has played a major role behind the success of wireless broadband systems. The IEEE 802.16m standard of the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) has been accepted as a 4G standard by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2011. The IEEE 802.16m is fully optimised for wireless communications in fixed environments and can deliver very high throughput and excellent quality of service. In mobile communication environments however, WiMAX consumers experience a graceful degradation of service as a direct function of vehicular speeds. At high vehicular speeds, the throughput drops in WiMAX systems and unless proactive measures such as forward error control and packet size optimisation are adopted and properly adjusted, many applications cannot be facilitated at high vehicular speeds in WiMAX communications. For any proactive measure, bit error rate estimation as a function of vehicular speed, serves as a useful tool. In this thesis, we present an analytical model for bit error rate estimation in WiMAX communications using the Nakagami-m fading model. We also show, through an analysis of the data collected from a practical WiMAX system, that the Nakagami-m model can be made adaptive as a function of speed, to represent fading in fixed environments as well as mobile environments

    Multi-Polarized Channel Characterization

    Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is becoming an important aspect of warehouse management, remote control, robotics, traffic control, supply chain management, fleet management and telemedicine. M2M is expected to become a significant portion of the Industrial Internet and, more broadly, the Internet of Things (IoT). The environments in which M2M systems are expected to operate may be challenging in terms of radio wave propagation due to their cluttered, multipath nature, which can cause deep signal fades and signal depolarization. Polarization diversity in two dimensions is a well-known technique to mitigate such fades. But in the presence of reflectors and retarders where multipath components arrive from any direction, we find the detrimental effects to be three-dimensional and thus consider herein mitigation approaches that are also 3D. The objectives of this dissertation are three. First, to provide a theoretical framework for depolarization in three dimensions. Second, to prepare a tripolar antenna design that meets cost, power consumption, and simplicity requirements of M2M applications and that can mitigate the expected channel effects. Finally, to develop new channel models in three dimensional space for wireless systems. Accordingly, this dissertation presents a complete description of 3D electromagnetic fields, in terms of their polarization characteristics and confirms the advantage of employing tripolar antennas in multipath conditions. Furthermore, the experimental results illustrate that highly variable depolarization occurs across all three spatial dimensions and is dependent on small changes in frequency and space. Motivated by these empirical results, we worked with a collaborating institution to develop a three-dimensional tripolar antenna that can be integrated with a commercially available wireless sensor. This dissertation presents the testing results that show that this design significantly improves channels over traditional 2D approaches. The implications of tripolar antenna integration on M2M systems include reduction in energy use, longer wireless communication link distances, and/or greater link reliability. Similar results are shown for a planar antenna design that enables four different polarization configurations. Finally, the work presents a novel three-dimensional geometry-based stochastic channel model that builds the channel as a sum of shell-like sub-regions, where each sub-region consists of groups of multipath components. The model is validated with empirical data to show the approach may be used for system analyses in indoor environments

    Performance analysis of cooperative diversity in land mobile satellite systems.

    Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2013.Land Mobile Satellite Systems (LMSS) generally differ from other terrestrial wireless systems. The LMSS exhibit unique characteristics with regard to the physical layer, interference scenarios, channel impairements, propagation delay, link characteristics, service coverage, user and satellite mobility etc. Terrestrial wireless systems have employed the spatial diversity or MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technique in addressing the problem of providing uninterrupted service delivery to all mobile users especially in places where non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) condition is prevalent (e.g. urban and suburban environments). For the LMSS, cooperative diversity has been proposed as a valuable alternative to the spatial diversity technique since it does not require the deployment of additional antennas in order to mitigate the fading effects. The basis of cooperative diversity is to have a group of mobile terminals sharing their antennas in order to generate a “virtual” multiple antenna, thus obtaining the same effects as the conventional MIMO system. However, the available cooperative diversity schemes as employed are based on outdated channel quality information (CQI) which is impracticable for LMSS due to its peculiar characteristics and its particularly long propagation delay. The key objective of this work is therefore to develop a cooperative diversity technology model which is most appropriate for LMSS and also adequately mitigates the outdated CQI challenge. To achieve the objective, the feasibility of cooperative diversity for LMSS was first analyzed by employing an appropriate LMSS channel model. Then, a novel Predictive Relay Selection (PRS) cooperative diversity scheme for LMSS was developed which adequately captured the LMSS architecture. The PRS cooperative scheme developed employed prediction algorithms, namely linear prediction and pattern-matching prediction algorithms in determining the future CQI of the available relay terminals before choosing the most appropriate relay for cooperation. The performance of the PRS cooperative diversity scheme in terms of average output SNR, outage probability, average channel capacity and bit error probability were simulated, then numerically analyzed. The results of the PRS cooperative diversity model for LMSS developed not only showed the gains resulting from introducing cooperative techniques in satellite communications but also showed improvement over other cooperative techniques that based their relay selection cooperation on channels with outdated quality information (CQI). Finally, a comparison between the results obtained from the various predictive models considered was carried out and the best prediction model was recommended for the PRS cooperation

    On the Performance Analysis of Cooperative Vehicular Communication

    Vehicular networking is envisioned to be a key technology area for significant growth in the coming years. Although the expectations for this emerging technology are set very high, many practical aspects remain still unsolved for a vast deployment of vehicular networks. This dissertation addresses the enabling physical layer techniques to meet the challenges in vehicular networks operating in mobile wireless environments. Considering the infrastructure-less nature of vehicular networks, we envision cooperative diversity well positioned to meet the demanding requirements of vehicular networks with their underlying distributed structure. Cooperative diversity has been proposed as a powerful means to enhance the performance of high-rate communications over wireless fading channels. It realizes spatial diversity advantages in a distributed manner where a node uses others antennas to relay its message creating a virtual antenna array. Although cooperative diversity has garnered much attention recently, it has not yet been fully explored in the context of vehicular networks considering the unique characteristics of vehicular networks, this dissertation provides an error performance analysis study of cooperative transmission schemes for various deployment and traffic scenarios. In the first part of this dissertation, we investigate the performance of a cooperative vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) system with amplify-and-forward relaying for typical traffic scenarios under city/urban settings and a highway area. We derive pairwise error probability (PEP) expressions and demonstrate the achievable diversity gains. The effect of imperfect channel state information (CSI) is also studied through an asymptotical PEP analysis. We present Monte-Carlo simulations to confirm the analytical derivations and present the error rate performance of the vehicular scheme with perfect and imperfect-CSI. In the second part, we consider road-to-vehicle (R2V) communications in which roadside access points use cooperating vehicles as relaying terminals. Under the assumption of decode-and-forward relaying, we derive PEP expressions for single-relay and multi-relay scenarios. In the third part, we consider a cooperative multi-hop V2V system in which direct transmission is not possible and investigate its performance through the PEP derivation and diversity gain analysis. Monte-Carlo simulations are further provided to con firm the analytical derivations and provide insight into the error rate performance improvement
