    An Efficient Online Benefit-aware Multiprocessor Scheduling Technique for Soft Real-Time Tasks Using Online Choice of Approximation Algorithms

    Maximizing the benefit gained by soft real-time tasks in many applications and embedded systems is highly needed to provide an acceptable QoS (Quality of Service). Examples of such applications and embedded systems include real-time medical monitoring systems, video- streaming servers, multiplayer video games, and mobile multimedia devices. In these systems, tasks are not equally critical (or beneficial). Each task comes with its own benefit-density function which can be different from the others’. The sooner a task completes, the more benefit it gains. In this work, a novel online benefit-aware preemptive approach is presented in order to enhance scheduling of soft real-time aperiodic and periodic tasks in multiprocessor systems. The objective of this work is enhancing the QoS by increasing the total benefit, while reducing flow times and deadline misses. This method prioritizes the tasks using their benefit-density functions, which imply their importance to the system, and schedules them in a real-time basis. The first model I propose is for scheduling soft real-time aperiodic tasks. An online choice of two approximation algorithms, greedy and load-balancing, is used in order to distribute the low- priority tasks among identical processors at the time of their arrival without using any statistics. The results of theoretical analysis and simulation experiments show that this method is able to maximize the gained benefit and decrease the computational complexity (compared to existing algorithms) while minimizing makespan with fewer missed deadlines and more balanced usage of processors. I also propose two more versions of this algorithm for scheduling SRT periodic tasks, with implicit and non-implicit deadlines, in addition to another version with a modified loadbalancing factor. The extensive simulation experiments and empirical comparison of these algorithms with the state of the art, using different utilization levels and various benefit density functions show that these new techniques outperform the existing ones.     Embedded computer systems seem to be the antithesis of functional language systems. Embedded systems are small, stand-alone, and are often forced to accept inelegant design compromises due to hardware cost. They run continuously and are reactive, that is, their primary goal is to monitor sensors and control effectors, using observed external events to trigger state-changing control actions. Yet this thesis describes how functional abstraction can tame the inelegance of embedded systems. Architectural compromises can be made in device drivers, programmed within the functional language, but a function-level interface is presented to the application programmer. Four modifications are introduced to a test-bed purely-functional language in order to facilitate embedded-systems programming: I/O register access; communicating processes; interrupts; and a real-time incremental garbage collector.     This report starts by, in Chapter 1, outlining aspects of querying and updating resources on the Web and on the Semantic Web, including the development of query and update languages to be carried out within the Rewerse project. From this outline, it becomes clear that several existing research areas and topics are of interest for this work in Rewerse. In the remainder of this report we further present state of the art surveys in a selection of such areas and topics. More precisely: in Chapter 2 we give an overview of logics for reasoning about state change and updates; Chapter 3 is devoted to briefly describing existing update languages for the Web, and also for updating logic programs; in Chapter 4 event-condition-action rules, both in the context of active database systems and in the context of semistructured data, are surveyed; in Chapter 5 we give an overview of some relevant rule-based agents frameworks

    A flight software development and simulation framework for advanced space systems

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Aeronautics and Astronautics, 2002.Includes bibliographical references (p. 293-302).Distributed terrestrial computer systems employ middleware software to provide communications abstractions and reduce software interface complexity. Embedded applications are adopting the same approaches, but must make provisions to ensure that hard real-time temporal performance can be maintained. This thesis presents the development and validation of a middleware system tailored to spacecraft flight software development. Our middleware runs on the Generalized Flight Operations Processing Simulator (GFLOPS) and is called the GFLOPS Rapid Real-time Development Environment (GRRDE). GRRDE provides publish-subscribe communication services between software components. These services help to reduce the complexity of managing software interfaces. The hard real-time performance of these services has been verified with General Timed Automata modelling and extensive run-time testing. Several example applications illustrate the use of GRRDE to support advanced flight software development. Two technology-focused studies examine automatic code generation and autonomous fault protection within the GRRDE framework.     Effective interprocess communication (IPC) in a real-time transputer network

    The thesis describes the design and implementation of an interprocess communication (IPC) mechanism within a real-time distributed operating system kernel (RT-DOS) which is designed for a transputer-based network. The requirements of real-time operating systems are examined and existing design and implementation strategies are described. Particular attention is paid to one of the object-oriented techniques although it is concluded that these techniques are not feasible for the chosen implementation platform. Studies of a number of existing operating systems are reported. The choices for various aspects of operating system design and their influence on the IPC mechanism to be used are elucidated. The actual design choices are related to the real-time requirements and the implementation that has been adopted is described. [Continues.
