    A Wideband 77-GHz, 17.5-dBm Fully Integrated Power Amplifier in Silicon

    A 77-GHz, +17.5 dBm power amplifier (PA) with fully integrated 50-Ω input and output matching and fabricated in a 0.12-µm SiGe BiCMOS process is presented. The PA achieves a peak power gain of 17 dB and a maximum single-ended output power of 17.5 dBm with 12.8% of power-added efficiency (PAE). It has a 3-dB bandwidth of 15 GHz and draws 165 mA from a 1.8-V supply. Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CBCPW) is used as the transmission line structure resulting in large isolation between adjacent lines, enabling integration of the PA in an area of 0.6 mm^2. By using a separate image-rejection filter incorporated before the PA, the rejection at IF frequency of 25 GHz is improved by 35 dB, helping to keep the PA design wideband

    Joint Communication and Sensing Design in Coal Mine Safety Monitoring: 3D Phase Beamforming for RIS-Assisted Wireless Networks

    This paper investigates the resource allocation of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided joint communication and sensing (JCAS) system in a coal mine scenario. In the JCAS system, an RIS is implemented at the corner of the zigzag tunnels to improve the complicated wireless environment, where ground obstacles frequently block direct links. In addition, a wireless backhaul base station with a limited energy budget is deployed in the depth of the mine to sense the target area and provide internet of things (IoT) services and communication services for users. Furthermore, a data center is placed on the ground to analyze the obtained data and route the communication data. Under this deployment, a joint optimization problem of RIS phase shift matrix, RIS element switches, and area sensing time is proposed. We aim to maximize the successful sensed bits under total completion time, and maximum transmit power constraints. In order to solve this problem, an iterative algorithm is proposed. The successive convex approximation (SCA) based algorithm is used for the RIS phase shift matrix optimization subproblem. For the sensing time optimization subproblem, the quadratic approximation method is proposed to optimize the number of area perceptions. The coordinate descent method is utilized to optimize the RIS element switches. Simulation results show that the energy efficiency is improved by up to 38%, and 7% increases the specific data size compared with the benchmark solutions

    Operational and Infrastructure Readiness for Semi-Automated Truck Platoons on Rural Roads: Article

    On highways, truck platooning may reduce fuel consumption, improve road safety and streamline trucking operations. However, most roads worldwide are two-way, two-lane rural roads, i.e., conditions for which truck platooning should be tested to explore the extent of those advantages. This paper reports findings from a field study undertaken in Northern Norway, testing a platoon of three semi-automated trucks on rural roads with tunnels, mountain passes and adverse geometries. Fleet management and distance data, videos, interviews and conversations between participants were used to assess whether platooning was feasible on such roads. The platooning system was used without interventions through most road conditions, and worked well on flat and wide roads with 90 km/h speed limits. However, it struggled in sharp horizontal curves, where the following trucks would speed up before regaining connection to their preceding truck and then brake abruptly to regain the prescribed distance. Moreover, steep uphills were problematic due to inconsistent gear shifting between the trucks. Seemingly, no fuel savings were achieved, due to excessive following distances and suboptimal speed profiles on crest curves. To obtain further insights into the benefits of truck platooning on rural roads, we suggest redoing the field study with V2V-communication, allowing for shorter following distances, and also performing a manual-driven baseline first

    Predicting RF Signal Degradation Through the Hypersonic Plasma Sheath Using dsmcFoam and PIC Method

    The transmission and degradation of RF signals through the plasma sheath surrounding hypersonic vehicles is investigated using a DSMC flow solver method. The OpenFoam library dsmcFoam is used to simulate flow around hypersonic bodies and obtain flow field properties to aid in calculations of signal degradation. The study of RF signal degradation and the viability of communications for hypersonic vehicles is of supreme importance for the future of aerospace as hypersonic travel and warfare is becoming technologically possible. Integrating over the output electron number density profile yields values for attenuation that drop below 100 decibels in the transmission window of 10 to 30 GHz. In this window, phase shift values remain between 2 and 10 radians. Outside of this transmission window, attenuation and phase shift are high and indicate poor chance of viable communications. If signal degradation models can be verified and improved with wind tunnel and flight data, these results suggest that vital radar and satellite communications are possible through the plasma sheath and can be decoded using accurately predicted degradation values

    Geophysical methods to detect tunnelling at a geological repository site : Applicability in safeguards

    ABSTRACT Generating power with nuclear energy accumulates radioactive spent nuclear fuel, anticipated not to be diversified into any unknown purposes. Nuclear safeguards include bookkeeping of nuclear fuel inventories, frequent checking, and monitoring to confirm nuclear non-proliferation. Permanent isolation of radionuclides from biosphere by disposal challenges established practices, as opportunities for monitoring of individual fuel assemblies ceases. Different concepts for treatment and geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel exist. Spent nuclear fuel disposal facility is under construction in Olkiluoto in Southwest Finland. Posiva Oy has carried out multidisciplinary bedrock characterization of crystalline bedrock for siting and design of the facility. Site description involved compilation of geological models from investigations at surface level, from drillholes and from underground rock characterization facility ONKALO. Research focused on long term safety case (performance) of engineered and natural barriers in purpose to minimize risks of radionuclide release. Nuclear safeguards include several concepts. Containment and surveillance (C/S) are tracking presence of nuclear fuel through manufacturing, energy generation, cooling, transfer, and encapsulation. Continuity of knowledge (CoK) ensures traceability and non-diversion. Design information provided by the operator to the state and European Commission (Euratom), and further to IAEA describes spent nuclear fuel handling in the facility. Design information verification (DIV) using timely or unannounced inspections, provide credible assurance on absence of any ongoing undeclared activities within the disposal facility. Safeguards by design provide information applicable for the planning of safeguards measures, e.g., surveillance during operation of disposal facility. Probability of detection of an attempt to any undeclared intrusion into the repository containment needs to be high. Detection of such preparations after site closure would require long term monitoring or repeated geophysical measurements within or at proximity of the repository. Bedrock imaging (remote sensing, geophysical surveys) would serve for verifying declarations where applicable, or for characterization of surrounding rock mass to detect undeclared activities. ASTOR working group has considered ground penetrating radar (GPR) for DIV in underground constructed premises during operation. Seismic reflection survey and electrical or electromagnetic imaging may also apply. This report summarizes geophysical methods used in Olkiluoto, and some recent development, from which findings could be applied also for nuclear safeguards. In this report the geophysical source fields, involved physical properties, range of detection, resolution, survey geometries, and timing of measurements are reviewed for different survey methods. Useful interpretation of geophysical data may rely on comparison of results to declared repository layout, since independent understanding of the results may not be successful. Monitoring provided by an operator may enable alarm and localization of an undeclared activity in a cost-effective manner until closure of the site. Direct detection of constructed spaces, though possible, might require repeated effort, have difficulties to provide spatial coverage, and involve false positive alarms still requiring further inspection

    dissertationWireless communication has become an essential part of everyday life. The hunger for more data, more phone calls, more video, and more access in more places, including vehicles, is growing massively. Communication in vehicles is particularly challenging because of their extremely high multipath environment. In addition, there is significant interest in reducing the number of wires in vehicles to reduce weight, complexity, maintenance, etc. and replace them with wireless systems. Preliminary research shows that MIMO systems take advantage of the extreme multipath environment found in aircraft and other vehicles and also provides more consistent channel capacity than SISO systems. The purpose of this research was to quantify complex channels (including the aircraft/vehicle environment) and their relation to other environments, evaluate MIMO in aircraft, provide design constraints for accurately modeling complex channels, and provide information to predict optimum antenna type and location to enable communication in aircraft/cars/buses/ships/trains/etc. and other extreme channels. The ability to evaluate and design MIMO technologies from the guidelines in this paper is potentially transformative for aircraft safety - enabling a new generation of location specific monitoring and maintenance. Average measured capacity was found to be between 18 and 21 bits/s/Hz using a 4x4 array of antennas, and had no direct relation to the size of the channel. Site-specific capacity showed a multipath rich channel, varying between 15 to 23 bits/s/Hz. The capacity decreased for increasing measurement distance, with exceptions near reflective objects that increase multipath. Due to these special circumstances for site-specific locations within complex channels, it is recommended that 3D ray tracing be used for modeling as it is more accurate than commonly used statistical models, within 1.1 bits/s/Hz. This showed that our 3D ray tracing is adaptable to various environments and gives a more accurate depiction than statistical models that average channel variations. This comes at the cost of greater model complexity. If increased complexity is not desirable, Nakagami 1.4 could be used as the next most accurate model. Design requirements for modeling different complex channels involve a detailed depiction of channel geometry, including height, width, length, shape (square, cylindrical, slanted walls, etc.), large windows, and reflective objects inside the channel space, especially those near the transmitter. Overall, the multipath rich channel found in vehicles is an excellent environment for MIMO systems. These complex channels can be simulated accurately without measurement and before they are even built using our sitespecific 3D ray tracing software combined with a detailed signal model to incorporate antenna effects

    AILiveSim : An Extensible Virtual Environment for Training Autonomous Vehicles

    Virtualization technologies have become common- place both in software development as well as engineering in a more general sense. Using virtualization offers other benefits than simulation and testing as a virtual environment can often be more liberally configured than the corresponding physical envi- ronment. This, in turn, introduces new possibilities for education and training, including both for humans and artificial intelligence (AI). To this end, we are developing a simulation platform AILiveSim. The platform is built on top of the Unreal Engine game development system, and it is dedicated to training and testing autonomous systems, their sensors and their algorithms in a simulated environment. In this paper, we describe the elements that we have built on top of the engine to realize a Virtual Environment (VE) useful for the design, implementation, application and analysis of autonomous systems. We present the architecture that we have put in place to transform our simulation platform from automotive specific to be domain agnostic and support two new domains of applications: autonomous ships and autonomous mining machines. We describe the important specificity of each domain in regard to simulation. In addition, we also report the challenges encountered when simulating those applications, and the decisions taken to overcome these challenges.Peer reviewe

    The purpose of this catalog is to assist small business firms in making the community aware of products emerging from their efforts in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. It contains descriptions of some products that have advanced into Phase 3 and others that are identified as prospective products. Both lists of products in this catalog are based on information supplied by NASA SBIR contractors in responding to an invitation to be represented in this document. Generally, all products suggested by the small firms were included in order to meet the goals of information exchange for SBIR results. Of the 444 SBIR contractors NASA queried, 137 provided information on 219 products. The catalog presents the product information in the technology areas listed in the table of contents. Within each area, the products are listed in alphabetical order by product name and are given identifying numbers. Also included is an alphabetical listing of the companies that have products described. This listing cross-references the product list and provides information on the business activity of each firm. In addition, there are three indexes: one a list of firms by states, one that lists the products according to NASA Centers that managed the SBIR projects, and one that lists the products by the relevant Technical Topics utilized in NASA's annual program solicitation under which each SBIR project was selected

    Structural health monitoring of in-service tunnels

    This work presents an overview of some of the most promising technologies for the structural health monitoring (SHM) of in-service tunnels. The common goal of damage or unusual behaviour detection is best pursued by an integrated approach based on the concurrent deployment of multiple technologies. Typically, traditional SHM systems are installed in problematic or special areas of the tunnels, giving information on conditions and helping manage maintenance. However, these methodologies often have the drawbacks of forcing the interruption of traffic for SHM system installation and monitoring only selected portions. Alternative solutions that would make it possible to keep the tunnel in normal operation and/or to analyse the entire infrastructure development through successive and continuous scanning stages, would be beneficial. In this paper, the authors will briefly review some traditional monitoring technologies for tunnels. Furthermore, the work is aimed at identifying alternative solutions, limiting or avoiding traffic interruptions
