    Multi-Channel Multi-Radio Using 802.11 Based Media Access for Sink Nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks

    The next generation surveillance and multimedia systems will become increasingly deployed as wireless sensor networks in order to monitor parks, public places and for business usage. The convergence of data and telecommunication over IP-based networks has paved the way for wireless networks. Functions are becoming more intertwined by the compelling force of innovation and technology. For example, many closed-circuit TV premises surveillance systems now rely on transmitting their images and data over IP networks instead of standalone video circuits. These systems will increase their reliability in the future on wireless networks and on IEEE 802.11 networks. However, due to limited non-overlapping channels, delay, and congestion there will be problems at sink nodes. In this paper we provide necessary conditions to verify the feasibility of round robin technique in these networks at the sink nodes by using a technique to regulate multi-radio multichannel assignment. We demonstrate through simulations that dynamic channel assignment scheme using multi-radio, and multichannel configuration at a single sink node can perform close to optimal on the average while multiple sink node assignment also performs well. The methods proposed in this paper can be a valuable tool for network designers in planning network deployment and for optimizing different performance objectives

    This research aimed to create new knowledge and pioneer a path in the area relating to future trends in the WSN, by resolving some of the issues at the MAC layer in Wireless Sensor Networks. This work introduced a Multi-channel Distributed Coordinated Function (MC-DCF) which takes advantage of multi-channel assignment. The backoff algorithm of the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) was modified to invoke channel switching, based on threshold criteria in order to improve the overall throughput for wireless sensor networks. This work commenced by surveying different protocols: contention-based MAC protocols, transport layer protocols, cross-layered design and multichannel multi-radio assignments. A number of existing protocols were analysed, each attempting to resolve one or more problems faced by the current layers. The 802.15.4 performed very poorly at high data rate and at long range. Therefore 802.15.4 is not suitable for sensor multimedia or surveillance system with streaming data for future multichannel multi-radio systems. A survey on 802.11 DCF - which was designed mainly for wireless networks –supports and confirm that it has a power saving mechanism which is used to synchronise nodes. However it uses a random back-off mechanism that cannot provide deterministic upper bounds on channel access delay and as such cannot support real-time traffic. The weaknesses identified by surveying this protocol form the backbone of this thesis The overall aim for this thesis was to introduce multichannel with single radio as a new paradigm for IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordinated Function (DCF) in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that is used in a wide range of applications, from military application, environmental monitoring, medical care, smart buildings and other industry and to extend WSNs with multimedia capability which sense for instance sounds or motion, video sensor which capture video events of interest. Traditionally WSNs do not need high data rate and throughput, since events are normally captured periodically. With the paradigm shift in technology, multimedia streaming has become more demanding than data sensing applications as such the need for high data rate protocol for WSN which is an emerging technology in this area. The IEEE 802.11 can support data rates up to 54Mbps and 802.11 DCF was designed specifically for use in wireless networks. This thesis focused on designing an algorithm that applied multichannel to IEEE 802.11 DCF back-off algorithm to reduce the waiting time of a node and increase throughput when attempting to access the medium. Data collection in WSN tends to suffer from heavy congestion especially nodes nearer to the sink node. Therefore, this thesis proposes a contention based MAC protocol to address this problem from the inspiration of the 802.11 DCF backoff algorithm resulting from a comparison of IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15.4 for Future Green Multichannel Multi-radio Wireless Sensor Networks

    Planning and realization of a WiFi 6 network to replace wired connections in an enterprise environment

    WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) is a popular wireless LAN technology. It provides broadband wireless connectivity to all the users in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. Given the fact that the WiFi technology is much easier and cost-efficient to deploy, it is rapidly gaining acceptance as an alternative to a wired local area network. Nowadays the Wireless access to data is a necessity for everyone in the daily life. Considering the last 30 years, the unlimited access to information has transformed entire industries, fueling growth, productivity and profits.The WiFi technology, which is governed by the IEEE 802.11 standards body, has played a key role in this transformation. In fact, thanks to WiFi, users can benefit of low cost access to high data rate wireless connectivity. The first version of the IEEE 802.11 protocol was released in 1997. IEEE 802.11 has been improved with different versions in order to enhance the throughput and support new technologies. WiFi networks are now experiencing the bandwidth-demanding media content as well as multiple WiFi devices for each user. As a consequence of this, WiFi 6, which is based on the IEEE 802.11ax standard, is focused on improving the efficiency of the radio link. However, there is a relatively modest increase in peak data rate too. In this thesis we have planned and realized a WiFi 6 network to replace wired connections in an enterprise environment. To do this the optimal access point placement problem has been taken into account, resulting in an improvement of the coverage.     Marshall Space Flight Center Faculty Fellowship Program

    The 2017 Marshall Faculty Fellowship Program involved 21 faculty in the laboratories and departments at Marshall Space Flight Center. These faculty engineers and scientists worked with NASA collaborators on NASA projects, bringing new perspectives and solutions to bear. This Technical Memorandum is a compilation of the research reports of the 2017 Marshall Faculty Fellowship program, along with the Program Announcement (Appendix A) and the Program Description (Appendix B). The research affected the following six areas: (1) Materials (2) Propulsion (3) Instrumentation (4) Spacecraft systems (5) Vehicle systems (6) Space science The materials investigations included composite structures, printing electronic circuits, degradation of materials by energetic particles, friction stir welding, Martian and Lunar regolith for in-situ construction, and polymers for additive manufacturing. Propulsion studies were completed on electric sails and low-power arcjets for use with green propellants. Instrumentation research involved heat pipes, neutrino detectors, and remote sensing. Spacecraft systems research was conducted on wireless technologies, layered pressure vessels, and two-phase flow. Vehicle systems studies were performed on life support-biofilm buildup and landing systems. In the space science area, the excitation of electromagnetic ion-cyclotron waves observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission provided insight regarding the propagation of these waves. Our goal is to continue the Marshall Faculty Fellowship Program funded by Center internal project offices. Faculty Fellows in this 2017 program represented the following minority-serving institutions: Alabama A&M University and Oglala Lakota College

    An investigation into the deployment of IEEE 802.11 networks

    Currently, the IEEE 802.11 standard is the leading technology in the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) market. It provides flexibility and mobility to users, which in turn, increase productivity. Opposed to traditional fixed Local Area Network (LAN) technologies, WLANs are easier to deploy and have lower installation costs. Unfortunately, there are problems inherent within the technology and standard that inhibits its performance. Technological problems can be attributed to the physical medium of a WLAN, the electromagnetic (EM) wave. Standards based problems include security issues and the MAC layer design. However the impact of these problems can be mitigated with proper planning and design of the WLAN. To do this, an understanding of WLAN issues and the use of WLAN software tools are necessary. This thesis discusses WLAN issues such as security and electromagnetic wave propagation and introduces software that can aid the planning, deployment and maintenance of a WLAN. Furthermore the planning, implementation and auditing phases of a WLAN lifecylce are discussed. The aim being to provide an understanding of the complexities involved to deploy and maintain a secure and reliable WLAN

    Exploration and Design of Power-Efficient Networked Many-Core Systems

    Multiprocessing is a promising solution to meet the requirements of near future applications. To get full benefit from parallel processing, a manycore system needs efficient, on-chip communication architecture. Networkon- Chip (NoC) is a general purpose communication concept that offers highthroughput, reduced power consumption, and keeps complexity in check by a regular composition of basic building blocks. This thesis presents power efficient communication approaches for networked many-core systems. We address a range of issues being important for designing power-efficient manycore systems at two different levels: the network-level and the router-level. From the network-level point of view, exploiting state-of-the-art concepts such as Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous (GALS), Voltage/ Frequency Island (VFI), and 3D Networks-on-Chip approaches may be a solution to the excessive power consumption demanded by today’s and future many-core systems. To this end, a low-cost 3D NoC architecture, based on high-speed GALS-based vertical channels, is proposed to mitigate high peak temperatures, power densities, and area footprints of vertical interconnects in 3D ICs. To further exploit the beneficial feature of a negligible inter-layer distance of 3D ICs, we propose a novel hybridization scheme for inter-layer communication. In addition, an efficient adaptive routing algorithm is presented which enables congestion-aware and reliable communication for the hybridized NoC architecture. An integrated monitoring and management platform on top of this architecture is also developed in order to implement more scalable power optimization techniques. From the router-level perspective, four design styles for implementing power-efficient reconfigurable interfaces in VFI-based NoC systems are proposed. To enhance the utilization of virtual channel buffers and to manage their power consumption, a partial virtual channel sharing method for NoC routers is devised and implemented. Extensive experiments with synthetic and real benchmarks show significant power savings and mitigated hotspots with similar performance compared to latest NoC architectures.     On the Integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles into Public Airspace

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles will soon be integrated in the airspace and start serving us in various capacities such as package delivery, surveillance, search and rescue missions, inspection of infrastructure, precision agriculture, and cinematography. In this thesis, motivated by the challenges this new era brings about, we design a layered architecture called Internet of Drones (IoD). In this architecture, we propose a structure for the traffic in the airspace as well as the interaction between the components of our system such as unmanned aerial vehicles and service providers. We envision the minimal features that need to be implemented in various layers of the architecture, both on the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)'s side and on the service providers' side. We compare and contrast various approaches in three existing networks, namely the Internet, the cellular network, and the air traffic control network and discuss how they relate to IoD. As a tool to aid in enabling integration of drones in the airspace, we create a traffic flow model. This model will assign velocities to drones according to the traffic conditions in a stable way as well as help to study the formation of congestion in the airspace. We take the novel problem posed by the 3D nature of UAV flights as opposed to the 2D nature of road vehicles movements and create a fitting traffic flow model. In this model, instead of structuring our model in terms of roads and lanes as is customary for ground vehicles, we structure it in terms of channels, density and capacities. The congestion is formulated as the perceived density given the capacity and the velocity of vehicles will be set accordingly. This view removes the need for a lane changing model and its complexity which we believe should be abstracted away even for the ground vehicles as it is not fundamentally related to the longitudinal movements of vehicles. Our model uses a scalar capacity parameter and can exhibit both passing and blocking behaviors. Furthermore, our model can be solved analytically in the blocking regime and piece-wise analytically solved when in the passing regime. Finally, it is not possible to integrate UAVs into the airspace without some mechanism for coordination or in other words scheduling. We define a new scheduling problem in this regard that we call Vehicle Scheduling Problem (VSP). We prove NP-hardness for all the commonly used objective functions in the context of Job Shop Scheduling Problem (JSP). Then for the number of missed deadlines as our objective function, we give a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) formulation of VSP. We design a heuristic algorithm and compare the quality of the schedules created for small instances with the exact solution to the MIP instance. For larger instances, these comparisons are made with a baseline algorithm

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-Enabled Wireless Communications and Networking

    The emerging massive density of human-held and machine-type nodes implies larger traffic deviatiolns in the future than we are facing today. In the future, the network will be characterized by a high degree of flexibility, allowing it to adapt smoothly, autonomously, and efficiently to the quickly changing traffic demands both in time and space. This flexibility cannot be achieved when the network’s infrastructure remains static. To this end, the topic of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have enabled wireless communications, and networking has received increased attention. As mentioned above, the network must serve a massive density of nodes that can be either human-held (user devices) or machine-type nodes (sensors). If we wish to properly serve these nodes and optimize their data, a proper wireless connection is fundamental. This can be achieved by using UAV-enabled communication and networks. This Special Issue addresses the many existing issues that still exist to allow UAV-enabled wireless communications and networking to be properly rolled out
