    Simultaneous Positioning and Communications: Hybrid Radio Architecture, Estimation Techniques, and Experimental Validation

    abstract: Limited spectral access motivates technologies that adapt to diminishing resources and increasingly cluttered environments. A joint positioning-communications system is designed and implemented on \acf{COTS} hardware. This system enables simultaneous positioning of, and communications between, nodes in a distributed network of base-stations and unmanned aerial systems (UASs). This technology offers extreme ranging precision (<< 5 cm) with minimal bandwidth (10 MHz), a secure communications link to protect against cyberattacks, a small form factor that enables integration into numerous platforms, and minimal resource consumption which supports high-density networks. The positioning and communications tasks are performed simultaneously with a single, co-use waveform, which efficiently utilizes limited resources and supports higher user densities. The positioning task uses a cooperative, point-to-point synchronization protocol to estimate the relative position and orientation of all users within the network. The communications task distributes positioning information between users and secures the positioning task against cyberattacks. This high-performance system is enabled by advanced time-of-arrival estimation techniques and a modern phase-accurate distributed coherence synchronization algorithm. This technology may be installed in ground-stations, ground vehicles, unmanned aerial systems, and airborne vehicles, enabling a highly-mobile, re-configurable network with numerous applications.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201

    Channel Impulse Response Estimation in IEEE 802.11p via Data Fusion and MMSE Estimator

    Tracking the channel impulse response in systems based on the IEEE 802.11p standard, the most widely accepted standard for the physical layer in vehicular area networks (VANETs), is still an open research topic. In this paper we aim to improve previously proposed channel estimators by utilizing data aided algorithm that includes the channel decoding to enhance the quality of the estimated data. Moreover we propose a novel technique that exploits information provided by external sensors like GPS or speedometer, usually present in vehicles. The algorithm proposed so far has been analyzed in non-line-of-sight link conditions; in this paper we present an analysis of performances in the line-of-sight condition as well. Simulations show that both proposals give considerable improvements in terms of packet error rate and channel estimation error in the highway scenario which is surely the most stressing environment for the channel response tracker

    Adaptive equalisation for fading digital communication channels

    This thesis considers the design of new adaptive equalisers for fading digital communication channels. The role of equalisation is discussed in the context of the functions of a digital radio communication system and both conventional and more recent novel equaliser designs are described. The application of recurrent neural networks to the problem of equalisation is developed from a theoretical study of a single node structure to the design of multinode structures. These neural networks are shown to cancel intersymbol interference in a manner mimicking conventional techniques and simulations demonstrate their sensitivity to symbol estimation errors. In addition the error mechanisms of conventional maximum likelihood equalisers operating on rapidly time-varying channels are investigated and highlight the problems of channel estimation using delayed and often incorrect symbol estimates. The relative sensitivity of Bayesian equalisation techniques to errors in the channel estimate is studied and demonstrates that the structure's equalisation capability is also susceptible to such errors. Applications of multiple channel estimator methods are developed, leading to reduced complexity structures which trade performance for a smaller computational load. These novel structures are shown to provide an improvement over the conventional techniques, especially for rapidly time-varying channels, by reducing the time delay in the channel estimation process. Finally, the use of confidence measures of the equaliser's symbol estimates in order to improve channel estimation is studied and isolates the critical areas in the development of the technique — the production of reliable confidence measures by the equalisers and the statistics of symbol estimation error bursts

    Physical Layer Techniques for Wireless Communication Systems

    The increasing diffusion of mobile devices requiring, everywhere and every time, reliable connections able to support the more common applications, induced in the last years the deployment of telecommunication networks based on technologies capable to respond effectively to the ever-increasing market demand, still a long way off from saturation level. Multicarrier transmission techniques employed in standards for local networks (Wi-Fi) and metropolitan networks (WiMAX) and for many years hot research topic, have been definitely adopted beginning from the fourth generation of cellular systems (LTE). The adoption of multicarrier signaling techniques if on one hand has brought significant advantages to counteract the detrimental effects in environments with particularly harsh propagation channel, on the other hand, has imposed very strict requirements on sensitivity to recovery errors of the carrier frequency offset (CFO) due to the resulting impact on correct signal detection. The main focus of the thesis falls in this area, investigating some aspects relating to synchronization procedures for system based on multicarrier signaling. Particular reference will be made to a network entry procedure for LTE networks and to CFO recovery for OFDM, fltered multitone modulation and direct conversion receivers. Other contributions pertaining to physical layer issues for communication systems, both radio and over acoustic carrier, conclude the thesis

    Robust Vehicular Communications for Traffic Safety---Channel Estimation and Multiantenna Schemes

    Vehicular communications, where vehicles exchange information with other vehicles or entities in the road traffic environment, is expected to be a part of the future transportation system and promises to support a plethora of applications for traffic safety and efficiency. In particular, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication promises to support numerous traffic safety applications by enabling a vehicle to broadcast its current status to all the other vehicles in its surrounding.\ua0 \ua0 Vehicular wireless channels can be highly time- and/or frequency-selective due to high mobility of the vehicles and/or large delay spreads. IEEE 802.11p has been specified as the physical layer standard for vehicular communications, where the pilots are densely concentrated at the beginning of a frame. As a consequence, accurate channel estimation in later parts of the frame becomes a challenging task. In this thesis, a solution to overcome the ill-suited pilot pattern is studied; a cross-layered scheme to insert complementary pilots into an 802.11p frame is proposed. The scheme does not require modifications to the 802.11p standard and a modified receiver can utilize the complementary pilots for accurate channel estimation in vehicular channels.\ua0 \ua0 The metallic components of present-day vehicles pose a challenge in designing antenna systems that satisfy a minimum required directive gain in the entire horizontal plane. Multiple antennas with contrasting directive gain patterns can be used to alleviate the problems due to low directive gains. A scheme that combines the output of L antennas to the input of a single-port receiver is proposed in the thesis. The combining scheme is designed to minimize the probability of a burst error, i.e., an unsuccessful decoding of K consecutive packets from a transmitter arriving in the direction of low directive gains of the individual antennas. To minimize complexity, the scheme does not estimate or use any channel state information. It is shown using measured and simulated directive gain patterns that the probability of burst errors for packets arriving in the direction of low directive gains of the individual antenna elements can be minimized.\ua0 \ua0 The enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) scheme is used in V2V communications to facilitate the sharing of allocated time-frequency resources. The packet success ratio (PSR) of the broadcast messages in the EDCA scheme depends on the number of vehicles and the packet transmission rate. The interference at a receiving vehicle increases due to multiple simultaneous transmissions when the number of vehicles grows beyond a limit, resulting in the decrease of the PSR. A receiver setup with sector antennas, where the output of each antenna can be processed separately to decode a packet, is described in the thesis with a detailed performance analysis. A significant increase in the PSR is shown in a dense vehicular scenario by using four partially overlapping sector antennas compared with a single omnidirectional antenna setup

    Advanced OFDM Receivers for Underwater Acoustic Communications

    In underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, an emerging research area is the high data rate and robust transmission using multi-carrier modulation, such as orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). However, difficulties in the OFDM communications include Doppler estimation/compensation, beamforming, and channel estimation/equalization. In this thesis, to overcome these difficulties, advanced low complexity OFDM receivers of high performance are developed. A novel low complexity Doppler estimation method based on computing multi-channel autocorrelation is proposed, which provides accurate Doppler estimates. In simulations and sea trials with guard-free OFDM signal transmission, this method outperforms conventional single-channel autocorrelation method, and shows a less complexity than the method based on computing the cross-ambiguity function between the received and pilot signals with a comparable performance. Space-time clustering in UWA channels is investigated, and a low complexity multi-antenna receiver including a beamformer that exploits this channel property is proposed. Various space-time processing techniques are investigated and compared, and the results show that the space-time clustering demonstrates the best performance. Direction of arrival (DOA) fluctuations in time-varying UWA channels are investigated, and a further developed beamforming technique with DOA tracking is proposed. In simulation and sea trials, this beamforming is compared with the beamforming without DOA tracking. The results show that the tracking beamforming demonstrates a better performance. For the channel estimation, two low complexity sparse recursive least squares adaptive filters, based on diagonal loading and homotopy, are presented. In two different UWA communication systems, the two filters are investigated and compared with various existing adaptive filters, and demonstrate better performance. For the simulations, the Waymark baseband UWA channel model is used, to simulate the virtual signal transmission in time-varying UWA channels. This model is modified from the previous computationally efficient Waymark passband model, improving the computational efficiency further
