    Bio-inspired vertebral column, compliance and semi-passive dynamics in a lightweight robot

We study two main issues: 1) Compliance and semi-passive dynamics for locomotion of humanoid robots regarding robustness against unknown external perturbations; 2) The advantages of a bio-inspired multi-articulated vertebral column. We combine mechatronic compliance with structural compliance due to the use of flexible materials. And we explore how these capabilities allow to enforce morphological computation in the design of robust dynamic locomotion. We also investigate the use of compliance to design semi-passive motor primitives using the torso and the arms as a system of accumulation/release of potential/kinetic energy

    Maturational constraints for motor learning in high-dimensions: the case of biped walking

    Bio­-inspired approaches to the control and modelling of an anthropomimetic robot

    Introducing robots into human environments requires them to handle settings designed specifically for human size and morphology, however, large, conventional humanoid robots with stiff, high powered joint actuators pose a significant danger to humans. By contrast, “anthropomimetic” robots mimic both human morphology and internal structure; skeleton, muscles, compliance and high redundancy. Although far safer, their resultant compliant structure presents a formidable challenge to conventional control. Here we review, and seek to address, characteristic control issues of this class of robot, whilst exploiting their biomimetic nature by drawing upon biological motor control research. We derive a novel learning controller for discovering effective reaching actions created through sustained activation of one or more muscle synergies, an approach which draws upon strong, recent evidence from animal and humans studies, but is almost unexplored to date in musculoskeletal robot literature. Since the best synergies for a given robot will be unknown, we derive a deliberately simple reinforcement learning approach intended to allow their emergence, in particular those patterns which aid linearization of control. We also draw upon optimal control theories to encourage the emergence of smoother movement by incorporating signal dependent noise and trial repetition. In addition, we argue the utility of developing a detailed dynamic model of a complete robot and present a stable, physics-­‐‑based model, of the anthropomimetic ECCERobot, running in real time with 55 muscles and 88 degrees of freedom. Using the model, we find that effective reaching actions can be learned which employ only two sequential motor co-­‐‑activation patterns, each controlled by just a single common driving signal. Factor analysis shows the emergent muscle co-­‐‑activations can be reconstructed to significant accuracy using weighted combinations of only 13 common fragments, labelled “candidate synergies”. Using these synergies as drivable units the same controller learns the same task both faster and better, however, other reaching tasks perform less well, proportional to dissimilarity; we therefore propose that modifications enabling emergence of a more generic set of synergies are required. Finally, we propose a continuous controller for the robot, based on model predictive control, incorporating our model as a predictive component for state estimation, delay-­‐‑ compensation and planning, including merging of the robot and sensed environment into a single model. We test the delay compensation mechanism by controlling a second copy of the model acting as a proxy for the real robot, finding that performance is significantly improved if a precise degree of compensation is applied and show how rapidly an un-­‐‑compensated controller fails as the model accuracy degrades

    International audienceThis paper reports about the robotic installation set up by the Rhoban Project in the French pavilion of the Expo 2012 of Yeosu, Korea ([6]). The installation has consisted in a humorous show involving humanoid robots and anthropomorphic arms, with the illusion of life as a guideline. We emphasized natural compliant motion and physical interaction in order to make the show attractive. The design raised some issues dealing with robustness of robots, but also with the realism of the motions and the synchronization of the robots with the music

    The design, analysis and evaluation of a humanoid robotic head

    Where robots interact directly with humans on a ‘one-to-one’ basis, it is often quite important for them to be emotionally acceptable, hence the growing interesting in humanoid robots. In some applications it is important that these robots do not just resemble a human being in appearance, but also move like a human being too, to make them emotionally acceptable – hence the interest in biomimetic humanoid robotics. The research described in this thesis is concerned with the design, analysis and evaluation of a biomimetic humanoid robotic head. It is biomimetic in terms of physical design - which is based around a simulated cervical spine, and actuation, which is achieved using pneumatic air muscles (PAMS). The primary purpose of the research, however, and the main original contribution, was to create a humanoid robotic head capable of mimicking complex non-purely rotational human head movements. These include a sliding front-to-back, lateral movement, and a sliding, side-to-side lateral movement. A number of different approaches were considered and evaluated, before finalising the design. As there are no generally accepted metrics in the literature regarding the full range of human head movements, the best benchmarks for comparison are the angular ranges and speeds of humans in terms on pitch (nod), roll (tilt) and yaw (rotate) were used for comparison, and these they were considered desired ranges for the robot. These measured up well in comparison in terms of angular speed and some aspects of range of human necks. Additionally, the lateral movements were measured during the nod, tilt and rotate movements, and established the ability of the robot to perform the complex lateral movements seen in humans, thus proving the benefits of the cervical spine approach. Finally, the emotional acceptance of the robot movements was evaluated against another (commercially made) robot and a human. This was a blind test, in that the (human) evaluators had no way of knowing whether they were evaluation a human or a robot. The tests demonstrated that on scales of Fake/Natural, Machinelike/Humanlike and Unconcsious/Conscious the robot the robot scored similarly to the human

    An Overview on Principles for Energy Efficient Robot Locomotion

    Despite enhancements in the development of robotic systems, the energy economy of today's robots lags far behind that of biological systems. This is in particular critical for untethered legged robot locomotion. To elucidate the current stage of energy efficiency in legged robotic systems, this paper provides an overview on recent advancements in development of such platforms. The covered different perspectives include actuation, leg structure, control and locomotion principles. We review various robotic actuators exploiting compliance in series and in parallel with the drive-train to permit energy recycling during locomotion. We discuss the importance of limb segmentation under efficiency aspects and with respect to design, dynamics analysis and control of legged robots. This paper also reviews a number of control approaches allowing for energy efficient locomotion of robots by exploiting the natural dynamics of the system, and by utilizing optimal control approaches targeting locomotion expenditure. To this end, a set of locomotion principles elaborating on models for energetics, dynamics, and of the systems is studied

    Kinematic primitives for walking and trotting gaits of a quadruped robot with compliant legs

    In this work we research the role of body dynamics in the complexity of kinematic patterns in a quadruped robot with compliant legs. Two gait patterns, lateral sequence walk and trot, along with leg length control patterns of different complexity were implemented in a modular, feed-forward locomotion controller. The controller was tested on a small, quadruped robot with compliant, segmented leg design, and led to self-stable and self-stabilizing robot locomotion. In-air stepping and on-ground locomotion leg kinematics were recorded, and the number and shapes of motion primitives accounting for 95% of the variance of kinematic leg data were extracted. This revealed that kinematic patterns resulting from feed-forward control had a lower complexity (in-air stepping, 2 to 3 primitives) than kinematic patterns from on-ground locomotion (4 primitives), although both experiments applied identical motor patterns. The complexity of on-ground kinematic patterns had increased, through ground contact and mechanical entrainment. The complexity of observed kinematic on-ground data matches those reported from level-ground locomotion data of legged animals. Results indicate that a very low complexity of modular, rhythmic, feed-forward motor control is sufficient for level-ground locomotion in combination with passive compliant legged hardware

    International audienceWe introduce a novel humanoid robotic platform designed to jointly address three central goals of humanoid robotics: 1) study the role of morphology in biped locomotion; 2) study full-body compliant physical human-robot interaction; 3) be robust while easy and fast to duplicate to facilitate experimentation. The taken approach relies on functional modeling of certain aspects of human morphology, optimizing materials and geometry, as well as on the use of 3D printing techniques. In this article, we focus on the presentation of the design of specific morphological parts related to biped locomotion: the hip, the thigh, the limb mesh and the knee.     Locomotion system for ground mobile robots in uneven and unstructured environments

    One of the technology domains with the greatest growth rates nowadays is service robots. The extensive use of ground mobile robots in environments that are unstructured or structured for humans is a promising challenge for the coming years, even though Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) moving on flat and compact grounds are already commercially available and widely utilized to move components and products inside indoor industrial buildings. Agriculture, planetary exploration, military operations, demining, intervention in case of terrorist attacks, surveillance, and reconnaissance in hazardous conditions are important application domains. Due to the fact that it integrates the disciplines of locomotion, vision, cognition, and navigation, the design of a ground mobile robot is extremely interdisciplinary. In terms of mechanics, ground mobile robots, with the exception of those designed for particular surroundings and surfaces (such as slithering or sticky robots), can move on wheels (W), legs (L), tracks (T), or hybrids of these concepts (LW, LT, WT, LWT). In terms of maximum speed, obstacle crossing ability, step/stair climbing ability, slope climbing ability, walking capability on soft terrain, walking capability on uneven terrain, energy efficiency, mechanical complexity, control complexity, and technology readiness, a systematic comparison of these locomotion systems is provided in [1]. Based on the above-mentioned classification, in this thesis, we first introduce a small-scale hybrid locomotion robot for surveillance and inspection, WheTLHLoc, with two tracks, two revolving legs, two active wheels, and two passive omni wheels. The robot can move in several different ways, including using wheels on the flat, compact ground,[1] tracks on soft, yielding terrain, and a combination of tracks, legs, and wheels to navigate obstacles. In particular, static stability and non-slipping characteristics are considered while analyzing the process of climbing steps and stairs. The experimental test on the first prototype has proven the planned climbing maneuver’s efficacy and the WheTLHLoc robot's operational flexibility. Later we present another development of WheTLHLoc and introduce WheTLHLoc 2.0 with newly designed legs, enabling the robot to deal with bigger obstacles. Subsequently, a single-track bio-inspired ground mobile robot's conceptual and embodiment designs are presented. This robot is called SnakeTrack. It is designed for surveillance and inspection activities in unstructured environments with constrained areas. The vertebral column has two end modules and a variable number of vertebrae linked by compliant joints, and the surrounding track is its essential component. Four motors drive the robot: two control the track motion and two regulate the lateral flexion of the vertebral column for steering. The compliant joints enable limited passive torsion and retroflection of the vertebral column, which the robot can use to adapt to uneven terrain and increase traction. Eventually, the new version of SnakeTrack, called 'Porcospino', is introduced with the aim of allowing the robot to move in a wider variety of terrains. The novelty of this thesis lies in the development and presentation of three novel designs of small-scale mobile robots for surveillance and inspection in unstructured environments, and they employ hybrid locomotion systems that allow them to traverse a variety of terrains, including soft, yielding terrain and high obstacles. This thesis contributes to the field of mobile robotics by introducing new design concepts for hybrid locomotion systems that enable robots to navigate challenging environments. The robots presented in this thesis employ modular designs that allow their lengths to be adapted to suit specific tasks, and they are capable of restoring their correct position after falling over, making them highly adaptable and versatile. Furthermore, this thesis presents a detailed analysis of the robots' capabilities, including their step-climbing and motion planning abilities. In this thesis we also discuss possible refinements for the robots' designs to improve their performance and reliability. Overall, this thesis's contributions lie in the design and development of innovative mobile robots that address the challenges of surveillance and inspection in unstructured environments, and the analysis and evaluation of these robots' capabilities. The research presented in this thesis provides a foundation for further work in this field, and it may be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the areas of robotics, automation, and inspection. As a general note, the first robot, WheTLHLoc, is a hybrid locomotion robot capable of combining tracked locomotion on soft terrains, wheeled locomotion on flat and compact grounds, and high obstacle crossing capability. The second robot, SnakeTrack, is a small-size mono-track robot with a modular structure composed of a vertebral column and a single peripherical track revolving around it. The third robot, Porcospino, is an evolution of SnakeTrack and includes flexible spines on the track modules for improved traction on uneven but firm terrains, and refinements of the shape of the track guidance system. This thesis provides detailed descriptions of the design and prototyping of these robots and presents analytical and experimental results to verify their capabilities

    Development and Characteristics of a Highly Biomimetic Robotic Shoulder Through Bionics-Inspired Optimization

    This paper critically analyzes conventional and biomimetic robotic arms, underscoring the trade-offs between size, motion range, and load capacity in current biomimetic models. By delving into the human shoulder's mechanical intelligence, particularly the glenohumeral joint's intricate features such as its unique ball-and-socket structure and self-locking mechanism, we pinpoint innovations that bolster both stability and mobility while maintaining compactness. To substantiate these insights, we present a groundbreaking biomimetic robotic glenohumeral joint that authentically mirrors human musculoskeletal elements, from ligaments to tendons, integrating the biological joint's mechanical intelligence. Our exhaustive simulations and tests reveal enhanced flexibility and load capacity for the robotic joint. The advanced robotic arm demonstrates notable capabilities, including a significant range of motions and a 4 kg payload capacity, even exerting over 1.5 Nm torque. This study not only confirms the human shoulder joint's mechanical innovations but also introduces a pioneering design for a next-generation biomimetic robotic arm, setting a new benchmark in robotic technology
