Knowledge will Propel Machine Understanding of Content: Extrapolating from Current Examples
Machine Learning has been a big success story during the AI resurgence. One
particular stand out success relates to learning from a massive amount of data.
In spite of early assertions of the unreasonable effectiveness of data, there
is increasing recognition for utilizing knowledge whenever it is available or
can be created purposefully. In this paper, we discuss the indispensable role
of knowledge for deeper understanding of content where (i) large amounts of
training data are unavailable, (ii) the objects to be recognized are complex,
(e.g., implicit entities and highly subjective content), and (iii) applications
need to use complementary or related data in multiple modalities/media. What
brings us to the cusp of rapid progress is our ability to (a) create relevant
and reliable knowledge and (b) carefully exploit knowledge to enhance ML/NLP
techniques. Using diverse examples, we seek to foretell unprecedented progress
in our ability for deeper understanding and exploitation of multimodal data and

Logic Programming Applications: What Are the Abstractions and Implementations?
This article presents an overview of applications of logic programming,
classifying them based on the abstractions and implementations of logic
languages that support the applications. The three key abstractions are join,
recursion, and constraint. Their essential implementations are for-loops, fixed
points, and backtracking, respectively. The corresponding kinds of applications
are database queries, inductive analysis, and combinatorial search,
respectively. We also discuss language extensions and programming paradigms,
summarize example application problems by application areas, and touch on
example systems that support variants of the abstractions with different
implementations
Applying Formal Methods to Networking: Theory, Techniques and Applications
Despite its great importance, modern network infrastructure is remarkable for
the lack of rigor in its engineering. The Internet which began as a research
experiment was never designed to handle the users and applications it hosts
today. The lack of formalization of the Internet architecture meant limited
abstractions and modularity, especially for the control and management planes,
thus requiring for every new need a new protocol built from scratch. This led
to an unwieldy ossified Internet architecture resistant to any attempts at
formal verification, and an Internet culture where expediency and pragmatism
are favored over formal correctness. Fortunately, recent work in the space of
clean slate Internet design---especially, the software defined networking (SDN)
paradigm---offers the Internet community another chance to develop the right
kind of architecture and abstractions. This has also led to a great resurgence
in interest of applying formal methods to specification, verification, and
synthesis of networking protocols and applications. In this paper, we present a
self-contained tutorial of the formidable amount of work that has been done in

The role of falsification in the development of cognitive architectures: insights from a Lakatosian analysis
It has been suggested that the enterprise of developing mechanistic theories of the human cognitive architecture is flawed because the theories produced are not directly falsifiable. Newell attempted to sidestep this criticism by arguing for a Lakatosian model of scientific progress in which cognitive architectures should be understood as theories that develop over time. However, Newell’s own candidate cognitive architecture adhered only loosely to Lakatosian principles. This paper reconsiders the role of falsification and the potential utility of Lakatosian principles in the development of cognitive architectures. It is argued that a lack of direct falsifiability need not undermine the scientific development of a cognitive architecture if broadly Lakatosian principles are adopted. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the Lakatosian concepts of positive and negative heuristics for theory development and of general heuristic power offer methods for guiding the development of an architecture and for evaluating the contribution and potential of an architecture’s research program
Linguo-cognitive nature of ironic utterances in the German news media
The study is devoted to the linguo-cognitive nature of ironic utterances. The use of the linguistic cognitive approach to ironic utterances makes it possible to interpret such examples of ironic communication that formerly remained inaccessible to explanation from the standpoint of structural linguistics. The purpose of this work is to study the linguo-cognitive mechanisms underlying the ironic utterances in the texts of German newspapers and magazines. By analyzing more than 1,000 examples of ironic utterances taken in contemporary German journalism, the study defined, firstly, the type of information necessary for the ironic meaning actualization, and second, the scheme of cognitive calculations, leading to the interpretation of utterance as ironic. As a result, 4 main types of information frames (frame-concepts, language frames, frame-scenarios and frame-settings), a general linguo-cognitive model of the ironic utterance and 8 models of its implementation in a journalistic text were described. The obtained data reveals that language can perform a dual role in the formation of ironic meaning. On the one hand, language meanings serve as a verbal transmission of irony-based frames. On the other hand, language frames can be a direct material for the creation of linguistic irony
How does rumination impact cognition? A first mechanistic model.
Rumination is a process of uncontrolled, narrowly-foused neg- ative thinking that is often self-referential, and that is a hall- mark of depression. Despite its importance, little is known about its cognitive mechanisms. Rumination can be thought of as a specific, constrained form of mind-wandering. Here, we introduce a cognitive model of rumination that we devel- oped on the basis of our existing model of mind-wandering. The rumination model implements the hypothesis that rumina- tion is caused by maladaptive habits of thought. These habits of thought are modelled by adjusting the number of memory chunks and their associative structure, which changes the se- quence of memories that are retrieved during mind-wandering, such that during rumination the same set of negative memo- ries is retrieved repeatedly. The implementation of habits of thought was guided by empirical data from an experience sam- pling study in healthy and depressed participants. On the ba- sis of this empirically-derived memory structure, our model naturally predicts the declines in cognitive task performance that are typically observed in depressed patients. This study demonstrates how we can use cognitive models to better un- derstand the cognitive mechanisms underlying rumination and depression

The propositional nature of human associative learning
The past 50 years have seen an accumulation of evidence suggesting that associative learning depends oil high-level cognitive processes that give rise to propositional knowledge. Yet, many learning theorists maintain a belief in a learning mechanism in which links between mental representations are formed automatically. We characterize and highlight the differences between the propositional and link approaches, and review the relevant empirical evidence. We conclude that learning is the consequence of propositional reasoning processes that cooperate with the unconscious processes involved in memory retrieval and perception. We argue that this new conceptual framework allows many of the important recent advances in associative learning research to be retained, but recast in a model that provides a firmer foundation for both immediate application and future research
