Intercommection Incentives of a Large Network Facing Multiple Rivals
This paper extends Cremer, Rey and Tirole’s analysis of whether a firm with the most installed-base customers, in a market exhibiting network externalities, gains by degrading interconnection with rivals that compete with it for new customers. We allow any number of rivals and consider both tipping equilibria and interior equlibria. Degrading interconnection can yield tipping away from the largest network even if its installed-base share exceeds one half. For all parameter values (including those that admit interior equilibria), a share above one half is necessary but not sufficient to ensure degradation is profitable. Greater scope for market expansion—a lower marginal cost or smaller installed-base relative to potential additional demand—makes profitable degradation less likely.Interconnection, Network Externalities, Exclusion

Evidence to Suggest That Teeth Act as Human Ornament Displays Signalling Mate Quality
Ornament displays seen in animals convey information about genetic quality, developmental history and current disease state to both prospective sexual partners and potential rivals. In this context, showing of teeth through smiles etc is a characteristic feature of human social interaction. Tooth development is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Adult teeth record environmental and traumatic events, as well as the effects of disease and ageing. Teeth are therefore a rich source of information about individuals and their histories. This study examined the effects of digital manipulations of tooth colour and spacing. Results showed that deviation away from normal spacing and/or the presence of yellowed colouration had negative effects on ratings of attractiveness and that these effects were markedly stronger in female models. Whitening had no effect beyond that produced by natural colouration. This indicates that these colour induced alterations in ratings of attractiveness are mediated by increased/decreased yellowing rather than whitening per se. Teeth become yellower and darker with age. Therefore it is suggested that whilst the teeth of both sexes act as human ornament displays, the female display is more complex because it additionally signals residual reproductive value
Scheduling the Australian football league
Generating a schedule for a professional sports league is an extremely demanding task. Good schedules have many benefits for the league, such as higher attendance and TV viewership, lower costs, and increased fairness. The Australian Football League is particularly interesting because of an unusual competition format integrating a single round robin tournament with additional games. Furthermore, several teams have multiple home venues and some venues are shared by multiple teams. This paper presents a 3-phase process to schedule the Australian Football League. The resulting solution outperforms the official schedule with respect to minimizing and balancing travel distance and breaks, while satisfying more requirements
In the Trenches at the Talent Wars: Competitive Interaction for Scarce Human Resources - A Qualitative Study
The purpose of this paper is to examine how firms are competing for scarce human resources in the talent wars. First, the paper makes the distinction between responding to labor shortages with investments in recruiting and retention and directly competing against identified labor market competitors for scarce human resources. It appears firms compete with rivals in the open labor market and in initiating and defending against talent raids. The process of identifying and responding to the tactics of labor market competitors is reviewed for both types of direct competition. Firms tend to respond to rivals’ tactics either by changing the employment relationship with threatened employees or engaging in tactics to influence the behavior of the competing firm. Factors that determine the propensity and type of response to competitor’s tactics are reviewed and integrated. The greater the threat posed by the rival’s tactics the greater the likelihood affected firms will respond with externally as opposed to internally oriented tactics. The greater the skill mobility of threatened employees, the more administrative and financial resources will be invested in the counter-response. Finally, firms use a variety of preemptive tactics to reduce the threat of talent raids. These tactics are listed and explained. The paper concludes with recommendations for firms seeking to gain or protect advantage relative to rivals in the war for talent
The impact of horizontal mergers on rivals: Gains to being left outside a merger
It is commonly perceived that firms do not want to be outsiders to a merger between competitor firms. We instead argue that it is beneficial to be a non-merging rival firm to a large horizontal merger. Using a sample of mergers with expert-identification of relevant rivals and the event-study methodology, we find rivals generally experience positive abnormal returns at the merger announcement date. Further, we find that the stock reaction of rivals to merger events is not sensitive to merger waves; hence, 'future acquisition probability' does not drive the positive abnormal returns of rivals. We then build a conceptual framework that encompasses the impact of merger events on both merging and rival firms in order to provide a schematic to elicit more information on merger type
Handedness in fiddler crab fights
Asymmetric weapons are common in bilateral animals and, in some species, they can occur on either the left- or the right-hand side of the body (lateralization). Fiddler crabs (Uca spp, Decapoda: Ocypodidae) have an enlarged claw that is used in male–male combat over territories and in courtship displays. Males can be either right- or left-handed, and most species have a 1:1 ratio. Past studies have found little effect of handedness on fighting success, fight duration or other measures of combat. Here we show that, while handedness per se, does not affect fighting, handedness matching has a significant effect. In Uca mjoebergi, fights between different-handed males were more likely to escalate to grappling, suggesting that it is harder for the combatants to determine the winner. We suggest that the positioning of the claws during fighting creates distinct forces that result in different outcomes for same- versus different-handed fights. This can represent a strong selective pressure in populations with an uneven handedness distribution where the handedness minority will often engage in different-handed fights. We discuss these results in light of the selective forces that may act on handedness distribution in fiddler crabs
Toward a Social Practice Theory of Relational Competing
This paper brings together the competitive dynamics and strategy-aspractice literatures to investigate relational competition. Drawing on a global ethnography of the reinsurance market, we develop the concept of micro-competitions, which are the focus of competitors’ everyday competitive practices. We find variation in relational or rivalrous competition by individual competitors across the phases of a micro-competition, between competitors within a micro-competition, and across multiple micro-competitions. These variations arise from the interplay between the unfolding competitive arena and the implementation of each firm’s strategic portfolio. We develop a conceptual framework that makes four contributions to: relational competition; reconceptualizing action and response; elaborating on the awareness-motivation-capability framework within competitive dynamics; and the recursive dynamic by which implementing strategy inside firms shapes, and is shaped by, the competitive arena
Co-Following on Twitter
We present an in-depth study of co-following on Twitter based on the
observation that two Twitter users whose followers have similar friends are
also similar, even though they might not share any direct links or a single
mutual follower. We show how this observation contributes to (i) a better
understanding of language-agnostic user classification on Twitter, (ii)
eliciting opportunities for Computational Social Science, and (iii) improving
online marketing by identifying cross-selling opportunities.
We start with a machine learning problem of predicting a user's preference
among two alternative choices of Twitter friends. We show that co-following
information provides strong signals for diverse classification tasks and that
these signals persist even when (i) the most discriminative features are
removed and (ii) only relatively "sparse" users with fewer than 152 but more
than 43 Twitter friends are considered.
Going beyond mere classification performance optimization, we present
applications of our methodology to Computational Social Science. Here we
confirm stereotypes such as that the country singer Kenny Chesney
(@kennychesney) is more popular among @GOP followers, whereas Lady Gaga
(@ladygaga) enjoys more support from @TheDemocrats followers.
In the domain of marketing we give evidence that celebrity endorsement is
reflected in co-following and we demonstrate how our methodology can be used to
reveal the audience similarities between Apple and Puma and, less obviously,
between Nike and Coca-Cola. Concerning a user's popularity we find a
statistically significant connection between having a more "average"
followership and having more followers than direct rivals. Interestingly, a
\emph{larger} audience also seems to be linked to a \emph{less diverse}
