    Automatic Tuning of GRASP with Path-Relinking in data clustering with F-R ace and iterated F-Race

    In studies that use metaheuristics although the input parameters directly influence the performance of the algorithm its definition is mostly done manually raising questions about the quality of the results. This paper aims to apply the F/I-Race in the self parameterization of GRASP with Path-Relinking in the data clustering in order to obtain better results than the manually tuned algorithms. Experiments performed with five data sets showed that the use of I/F-race contributed to achievement best results than manual tuning

    Cross-layer modeling and optimization of next-generation internet networks

    Scaling traditional telecommunication networks so that they are able to cope with the volume of future traffic demands and the stringent European Commission (EC) regulations on emissions would entail unaffordable investments. For this very reason, the design of an innovative ultra-high bandwidth power-efficient network architecture is nowadays a bold topic within the research community. So far, the independent evolution of network layers has resulted in isolated, and hence, far-from-optimal contributions, which have eventually led to the issues today's networks are facing such as inefficient energy strategy, limited network scalability and flexibility, reduced network manageability and increased overall network and customer services costs. Consequently, there is currently large consensus among network operators and the research community that cross-layer interaction and coordination is fundamental for the proper architectural design of next-generation Internet networks. This thesis actively contributes to the this goal by addressing the modeling, optimization and performance analysis of a set of potential technologies to be deployed in future cross-layer network architectures. By applying a transversal design approach (i.e., joint consideration of several network layers), we aim for achieving the maximization of the integration of the different network layers involved in each specific problem. To this end, Part I provides a comprehensive evaluation of optical transport networks (OTNs) based on layer 2 (L2) sub-wavelength switching (SWS) technologies, also taking into consideration the impact of physical layer impairments (PLIs) (L0 phenomena). Indeed, the recent and relevant advances in optical technologies have dramatically increased the impact that PLIs have on the optical signal quality, particularly in the context of SWS networks. Then, in Part II of the thesis, we present a set of case studies where it is shown that the application of operations research (OR) methodologies in the desing/planning stage of future cross-layer Internet network architectures leads to the successful joint optimization of key network performance indicators (KPIs) such as cost (i.e., CAPEX/OPEX), resources usage and energy consumption. OR can definitely play an important role by allowing network designers/architects to obtain good near-optimal solutions to real-sized problems within practical running times

    Internet of Things in urban waste collection

This paper faces this issue and proposes the application of a metaheuristic for the optimization of a weekly schedule and routing of the waste collection activities in an urban area. Differently to several contributions in literature, fixed periodic routes are not imposed. The results significantly improve the performance of the company involved, both in terms of resources used and costs saving

    Design of Heuristic Algorithms for Hard Optimization

    This open access book demonstrates all the steps required to design heuristic algorithms for difficult optimization. The classic problem of the travelling salesman is used as a common thread to illustrate all the techniques discussed. This problem is ideal for introducing readers to the subject because it is very intuitive and its solutions can be graphically represented. The book features a wealth of illustrations that allow the concepts to be understood at a glance. The book approaches the main metaheuristics from a new angle, deconstructing them into a few key concepts presented in separate chapters: construction, improvement, decomposition, randomization and learning methods. Each metaheuristic can then be presented in simplified form as a combination of these concepts. This approach avoids giving the impression that metaheuristics is a non-formal discipline, a kind of cloud sculpture. Moreover, it provides concrete applications of the travelling salesman problem, which illustrate in just a few lines of code how to design a new heuristic and remove all ambiguities left by a general framework. Two chapters reviewing the basics of combinatorial optimization and complexity theory make the book self-contained. As such, even readers with a very limited background in the field will be able to follow all the content

    Logic learning and optimized drawing: two hard combinatorial problems

    Nowadays, information extraction from large datasets is a recurring operation in countless fields of applications. The purpose leading this thesis is to ideally follow the data flow along its journey, describing some hard combinatorial problems that arise from two key processes, one consecutive to the other: information extraction and representation. The approaches here considered will focus mainly on metaheuristic algorithms, to address the need for fast and effective optimization methods. The problems studied include data extraction instances, as Supervised Learning in Logic Domains and the Max Cut-Clique Problem, as well as two different Graph Drawing Problems. Moreover, stemming from these main topics, other additional themes will be discussed, namely two different approaches to handle Information Variability in Combinatorial Optimization Problems (COPs), and Topology Optimization of lightweight concrete structures

    On the role of metaheuristic optimization in bioinformatics

    Metaheuristic algorithms are employed to solve complex and large-scale optimization problems in many different fields, from transportation and smart cities to finance. This paper discusses how metaheuristic algorithms are being applied to solve different optimization problems in the area of bioinformatics. While the text provides references to many optimization problems in the area, it focuses on those that have attracted more interest from the optimization community. Among the problems analyzed, the paper discusses in more detail the molecular docking problem, the protein structure prediction, phylogenetic inference, and different string problems. In addition, references to other relevant optimization problems are also given, including those related to medical imaging or gene selection for classification. From the previous analysis, the paper generates insights on research opportunities for the Operations Research and Computer Science communities in the field of bioinformatics

    Perancangan Biased Random Key Genetic Algorithm dengan Multiple Populations untuk Menyelesaikan Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows

    This research deals with a variation of Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) by accommodating capacity and time constraints, also known as Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (CVRPTW). Soft drink distribution from depot to a number of outlets is an example of CTWVRP where every vehicle used to meet all demand from outlets must not exceed the capacity of the truck while the distribution process activity is restricted by the service hours at the distribution company. The main problem of this research is therefore how to determine the route of the truck such that the total transportation cost is minimized without violating the constraints. The CVRPTW is a Non Polynomial Hard (NP-Hard) Problem, therefore an efficient algorithm is needed to solve this problem effectively in a reasonable computation time. This research proposes a Biased Random Key Genetic Algorithm (BRKGA) with multiple populations which is coded in MATLAB for addressing the soft drink distribution. The performance of the proposed algorithm is then compared to a heuristic procedure that is previously used for dealing with the same problem. The result shows that the BRKGA with multiple population yields a lower total transportation cost compared to that of resulted from the heuristic. In addition, the use of multiple populations could further improve the performance of the basic BRKGA

    Optimised search heuristics: combining metaheuristics and exact methods to solve scheduling problems

These problems are defined by the need of processing a set of jobs on a shared set of resources. For most scheduling problems there is no known deterministic procedure that can solve them in polynomial time. This is the reason why researchers study methods that can provide a good solution in a reasonable amount of time. Much attention was given to the mathematical formulation of scheduling problems and the algebraic characterisation of the space of feasible solutions when exact algorithms were being developed; but exact methods proved inefficient to solve real sized instances. Local search based heuristics were developed that managed to quickly find good solutions, starting from feasible solutions produced by constructive heuristics. Local search algorithms have the disadvantage of stopping at the first local optimum they find when searching the feasible region. Research evolved to the design of metaheuristics, procedures that guide the search beyond the entrapment of local optima. Recently a new class of hybrid procedures, that combine local search based (meta) heuristics and exact algorithms of the operations research field, have been designed to find solutions for combinatorial optimisation problems, scheduling problems included. In this thesis we study the algebraic structure of scheduling problems; we address the existent hybrid procedures that combine exact methods with metaheuristics and produce a mapping of type of combination versus application and finally we develop new innovative metaheuristics and apply them to solve scheduling problems. These new methods developed include some combinatorial optimisation algorithms as components to guide the search in the solution space using the knowledge of the algebraic structure of the problem being solved. Namely we develop two new methods: a simple method that combines a GRASP procedure with a branch-and-bound algorithm; and a more elaborated procedure that combines the verification of the violation of valid inequalities with a tabu search.     Applications of biased-randomized algorithms and simheuristics in integrated logistics

    Transportation and logistics (T&L) activities play a vital role in the development of many businesses from different industries. With the increasing number of people living in urban areas, the expansion of on-demand economy and e-commerce activities, the number of services from transportation and delivery has considerably increased. Consequently, several urban problems have been potentialized, such as traffic congestion and pollution. Several related problems can be formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem (COP). Since most of them are NP-Hard, the finding of optimal solutions through exact solution methods is often impractical in a reasonable amount of time. In realistic settings, the increasing need for 'instant' decision-making further refutes their use in real life. Under these circumstances, this thesis aims at: (i) identifying realistic COPs from different industries; (ii) developing different classes of approximate solution approaches to solve the identified T&L problems; (iii) conducting a series of computational experiments to validate and measure the performance of the developed approaches. The novel concept of 'agile optimization' is introduced, which refers to the combination of biased-randomized heuristics with parallel computing to deal with real-time decision-making.Las actividades de transporte y logística (T&L) juegan un papel vital en el desarrollo de muchas empresas de diferentes industrias. Con el creciente número de personas que viven en áreas urbanas, la expansión de la economía a lacarta y las actividades de comercio electrónico, el número de servicios de transporte y entrega ha aumentado considerablemente. En consecuencia, se han potencializado varios problemas urbanos, como la congestión del tráfico y la contaminación. Varios problemas relacionados pueden formularse como un problema de optimización combinatoria (COP). Dado que la mayoría de ellos son NP-Hard, la búsqueda de soluciones óptimas a través de métodos de solución exactos a menudo no es práctico en un período de tiempo razonable. En entornos realistas, la creciente necesidad de una toma de decisiones "instantánea" refuta aún más su uso en la vida real. En estas circunstancias, esta tesis tiene como objetivo: (i) identificar COP realistas de diferentes industrias; (ii) desarrollar diferentes clases de enfoques de solución aproximada para resolver los problemas de T&L identificados; (iii) realizar una serie de experimentos computacionales para validar y medir el desempeño de los enfoques desarrollados. Se introduce el nuevo concepto de optimización ágil, que se refiere a la combinación de heurísticas aleatorias sesgadas con computación paralela para hacer frente a la toma de decisiones en tiempo real.Les activitats de transport i logística (T&L) tenen un paper vital en el desenvolupament de moltes empreses de diferents indústries. Amb l'augment del nombre de persones que viuen a les zones urbanes, l'expansió de l'economia a la carta i les activitats de comerç electrònic, el nombre de serveis del transport i el lliurament ha augmentat considerablement. En conseqüència, s'han potencialitzat diversos problemes urbans, com ara la congestió del trànsit i la contaminació. Es poden formular diversos problemes relacionats com a problema d'optimització combinatòria (COP). Com que la majoria són NP-Hard, la recerca de solucions òptimes mitjançant mètodes de solució exactes sovint no és pràctica en un temps raonable. En entorns realistes, la creixent necessitat de prendre decisions "instantànies" refuta encara més el seu ús a la vida real. En aquestes circumstàncies, aquesta tesi té com a objectiu: (i) identificar COP realistes de diferents indústries; (ii) desenvolupar diferents classes d'aproximacions aproximades a la solució per resoldre els problemes identificats de T&L; (iii) la realització d'una sèrie d'experiments computacionals per validar i mesurar el rendiment dels enfocaments desenvolupats.
