Modeling and Simulation in Engineering
This book provides an open platform to establish and share knowledge developed by scholars, scientists, and engineers from all over the world, about various applications of the modeling and simulation in the design process of products, in various engineering fields. The book consists of 12 chapters arranged in two sections (3D Modeling and Virtual Prototyping), reflecting the multidimensionality of applications related to modeling and simulation. Some of the most recent modeling and simulation techniques, as well as some of the most accurate and sophisticated software in treating complex systems, are applied. All the original contributions in this book are jointed by the basic principle of a successful modeling and simulation process: as complex as necessary, and as simple as possible. The idea is to manipulate the simplifying assumptions in a way that reduces the complexity of the model (in order to make a real-time simulation), but without altering the precision of the results
Combining Perception and Knowledge for Service Robotics
As the deployment of robots is shifting away from the industrial settings towards public and private sectors, the robots will have to get equipped with enough knowl- edge that will let them perceive, comprehend and act skillfully in their new work- ing environments. Unlike having a large degree of controlled environment variables characteristic for e.g. assembly lines, the robots active in shopping stores, museums or households will have to perform open-ended tasks and thus react to unforeseen events, self-monitor their activities, detect failures, recover from them and also learn and continuously update their knowledge. In this thesis we present a set of tools and algorithms for acquisition, interpreta- tion and reasoning about the environment models which enable the robots to act flexibly and skillfully in the afore mentioned environments. In particular our contri- butions beyond the state-of-the-art cover following four topics: a) semantic object maps which are the symbolic representations of indoor environments that robot can query for information, b) two algorithms for interactive segmentation of objects of daily use which enable the robots to recognise and grasp objects more robustly, c) an image point feature-based system for large scale object recognition, and finally, d) a system that combines statistical and logical knowledge for household domains and is able to answer queries such as Which objects are currently missing on a breakfast table? . Common to all contributions is that they are all knowledge-enabled in that they either use robot knowledge bases or ground knowledge structures into the robot s internal structures such as perception streams. Further, in all four cases we exploit the tight interplay between the robot s perceptual, reasoning and action skills which we believe is the key enabler for robots to act in unstructured environments. Most of the theoretical contributions of this thesis have also been implemented on TUM-James and TUM-Rosie robots and demonstrated to the spectators by having them perform various household chores. With those demonstrations we thoroughly validated the properties of the developed systems and showed the impossibility of having such tasks implemented without a knowledge-enabled backbone
Visual attention and swarm cognition for off-road robots

Vision-Based navigation system for unmanned aerial vehicles
Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe main objective of this dissertation is to provide Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
(UAVs) with a robust navigation system; in order to allow the UAVs to perform
complex tasks autonomously and in real-time. The proposed algorithms deal with
solving the navigation problem for outdoor as well as indoor environments, mainly
based on visual information that is captured by monocular cameras. In addition,
this dissertation presents the advantages of using the visual sensors as the main
source of data, or complementing other sensors in providing useful information; in
order to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the sensing purposes.
The dissertation mainly covers several research topics based on computer vision
techniques: (I) Pose Estimation, to provide a solution for estimating the 6D pose of
the UAV. This algorithm is based on the combination of SIFT detector and FREAK
descriptor; which maintains the performance of the feature points matching and decreases
the computational time. Thereafter, the pose estimation problem is solved
based on the decomposition of the world-to-frame and frame-to-frame homographies.
(II) Obstacle Detection and Collision Avoidance, in which, the UAV is able to
sense and detect the frontal obstacles that are situated in its path. The detection
algorithm mimics the human behaviors for detecting the approaching obstacles; by
analyzing the size changes of the detected feature points, combined with the expansion
ratios of the convex hull constructed around the detected feature points
from consecutive frames. Then, by comparing the area ratio of the obstacle and the
position of the UAV, the method decides if the detected obstacle may cause a collision.
Finally, the algorithm extracts the collision-free zones around the obstacle,
and combining with the tracked waypoints, the UAV performs the avoidance maneuver.
(III) Navigation Guidance, which generates the waypoints to determine
the flight path based on environment and the situated obstacles. Then provide
a strategy to follow the path segments and in an efficient way and perform the
flight maneuver smoothly. (IV) Visual Servoing, to offer different control solutions (Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) and PID), based on the obtained visual information; in
order to achieve the flight stability as well as to perform the correct maneuver; to
avoid the possible collisions and track the waypoints.
All the proposed algorithms have been verified with real flights in both indoor
and outdoor environments, taking into consideration the visual conditions; such as
illumination and textures. The obtained results have been validated against other
systems; such as VICON motion capture system, DGPS in the case of pose estimate
algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithms have been compared with several
previous works in the state of the art, and are results proves the improvement in
the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed algorithms.
Finally, this dissertation concludes that the visual sensors have the advantages
of lightweight and low consumption and provide reliable information, which is
considered as a powerful tool in the navigation systems to increase the autonomy
of the UAVs for real-world applications.
homografias mundo a imagen e imagen a imagen. (II) Deteccion obstaculos y elusion
A continuacion,
Creating and Recognizing 3D Objects
This thesis aims at investigating on 3D Computer Vision, a research topic which is gathering even increasing attention thanks to the more and more widespread availability of affordable 3D visual sensor, such as, in particular consumer grade RGB-D cameras.
The contribution of this dissertation is twofold. First, the work addresses how to compactly represent the content of images acquired with RGB-D cameras. Second, the thesis focuses on 3D Reconstruction, key issue to efficiently populate the databases of 3D models deployed in object/category recognition scenarios.
As 3D Registration plays a fundamental role in 3D Reconstruction, the former part of the thesis proposes a pipeline for coarse registration of point clouds that is entirely based on the computation of 3D Local Reference Frames (LRF). Unlike related work in literature, we also propose a comprehensive experimental evaluation based on diverse kinds of data (such as those acquired by laser scanners, RGB-D and stereo cameras) as well as on quantitative comparison with respect to three other methods.
Driven by the ever-lower costs and growing distribution of 3D sensing devices, we expect broad-scale integration of depth sensing into mobile devices to be forthcoming.
Accordingly, the thesis investigates on merging appearance and shape information for Mobile Visual Search and focuses on encoding RGB-D images in compact binary codes.
An extensive experimental analysis on three state-of-the-art datasets, addressing both category and instance recognition scenarios, has led to the development of an RGB-D search engine architecture that can attain high recognition rates with peculiarly moderate bandwidth requirements.
Our experiments also include a comparison with the CDVS (Compact Descriptors for Visual Search) pipeline, candidate to become part of the MPEG-7 standard

The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC
