    Continuous Modeling of 3D Building Rooftops From Airborne LIDAR and Imagery

    In recent years, a number of mega-cities have provided 3D photorealistic virtual models to support the decisions making process for maintaining the cities' infrastructure and environment more effectively. 3D virtual city models are static snap-shots of the environment and represent the status quo at the time of their data acquisition. However, cities are dynamic system that continuously change over time. Accordingly, their virtual representation need to be regularly updated in a timely manner to allow for accurate analysis and simulated results that decisions are based upon. The concept of "continuous city modeling" is to progressively reconstruct city models by accommodating their changes recognized in spatio-temporal domain, while preserving unchanged structures. However, developing a universal intelligent machine enabling continuous modeling still remains a challenging task. Therefore, this thesis proposes a novel research framework for continuously reconstructing 3D building rooftops using multi-sensor data. For achieving this goal, we first proposes a 3D building rooftop modeling method using airborne LiDAR data. The main focus is on the implementation of an implicit regularization method which impose a data-driven building regularity to noisy boundaries of roof planes for reconstructing 3D building rooftop models. The implicit regularization process is implemented in the framework of Minimum Description Length (MDL) combined with Hypothesize and Test (HAT). Secondly, we propose a context-based geometric hashing method to align newly acquired image data with existing building models. The novelty is the use of context features to achieve robust and accurate matching results. Thirdly, the existing building models are refined by newly proposed sequential fusion method. The main advantage of the proposed method is its ability to progressively refine modeling errors frequently observed in LiDAR-driven building models. The refinement process is conducted in the framework of MDL combined with HAT. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MDMC) coupled with Simulated Annealing (SA) is employed to perform a global optimization. The results demonstrates that the proposed continuous rooftop modeling methods show a promising aspects to support various critical decisions by not only reconstructing 3D rooftop models accurately, but also by updating the models using multi-sensor data

    dissertationStatistical shape analysis has emerged as an important tool for the quantitative analysis of anatomy in many medical imaging applications. The correspondence based approach to evaluate shape variability is a popular method, based on comparing configurations of carefully placed landmarks on each shape. In recent years, methods for automatic placement of landmarks have enhanced the ability of this approach to capture statistical properties of shape populations. However, biomedical shapes continue to present considerable difficulties in automatic correspondence optimization due to inherent geometric complexity and the need to correlate shape change with underlying biological parameters. This dissertation addresses these technical difficulties and presents improved shape correspondence models. In particular, this dissertation builds on the particle-based modeling (PBM) framework described by Joshua Cates' 2010 Ph.D. dissertation. In the PBM framework, correspondences are modeled as a set of dynamic points or a particle system, positioned automatically on shape surfaces by optimizing entropy contained in the model, with the idea of balancing model simplicity against accuracy of the particle system representation of shapes. This dissertation is a collection of four papers that extend the PBM framework to include shape regression and longitudinal analysis and also adds new methods to improve modeling of complex shapes. It also includes a summary of two applications from the field of orthopaedics. Technical details of the PBM framework are provided in Chapter 2, after which the first topic related to the study of shape change over time is addressed (Chapters 3 and 4). In analyses of normative growth or disease progression, shape regression models allow characterization of the underlying biological process while also facilitating comparison of a sample against a normative model. The first paper introduces a shape regression model into the PBM framework to characterize shape variability due to an underlying biological parameter. It further confirms the statistical significance of this relationship via systematic permutation testing. Simple regression models are, however, not sufficient to leverage information provided by longitudinal studies. Longitudinal studies collect data at multiple time points for each participant and have the potential to provide a rich picture of the anatomical changes occurring during development, disease progression, or recovery. The second paper presents a linear-mixed-effects (LME) shape model in order to fully leverage the high-dimensional, complex features provided by longitudinal data. The parameters of the LME shape model are estimated in a hierarchical manner within the PBM framework. The topic of geometric complexity present in certain biological shapes is addressed next (Chapters 5 and 6). Certain biological shapes are inherently complex and highly variable, inhibiting correspondence based methods from producing a faithful representation of the average shape. In the PBM framework, use of Euclidean distances leads to incorrect particle system interactions while a position-only representation leads to incorrect correspondences around sharp features across shapes. The third paper extends the PBM framework to use efficiently computed geodesic distances and also adds an entropy term based on the surface normal. The fourth paper further replaces the position-only representation with a more robust distance-from-landmark feature in the PBM framework to obtain isometry invariant correspondences. Finally, the above methods are applied to two applications from the field of orthopaedics. The first application uses correspondences across an ensemble of human femurs to characterize morphological shape differences due to femoroacetabular impingement. The second application involves an investigation of the short bone phenotype apparent in mouse models of multiple osteochondromas. Metaphyseal volume deviations are correlated with deviations in length to quantify the effect of cancer toward the apparent shortening of long bones (femur, tibia-fibula) in mouse models

    Liver segmentation using automatically defined patient specific B-Spline surface models

    This paper presents a novel liver segmentation algorithm. This is a model-driven approach; however, unlike previous techniques which use a statistical model obtained from a training set, we initialize patient-specific models directly from their own pre-segmentation. As a result, the non-trivial problems such as landmark correspondences, model registration etc. can be avoided. Moreover, by dividing the liver region into three sub-regions, we convert the problem of building one complex shape model into constructing three much simpler models, which can be fitted independently, greatly improving the computation efficiency. A robust graph-based narrow band optimal surface fitting scheme is also presented. The proposed approach is evaluated on 35 CT images. Compared to contemporary approaches, our approach has no training requirement and requires significantly less processing time, with an RMS error of 2.440.53mm against manual segmentation

    A Full Scale Camera Calibration Technique with Automatic Model Selection – Extension and Validation

    This thesis presents work on the testing and development of a complete camera calibration approach which can be applied to a wide range of cameras equipped with normal, wide-angle, fish-eye, or telephoto lenses. The full scale calibration approach estimates all of the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. The calibration procedure is simple and does not require prior knowledge of any parameters. The method uses a simple planar calibration pattern. Closed-form estimates for the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters are computed followed by nonlinear optimization. Polynomial functions are used to describe the lens projection instead of the commonly used radial model. Statistical information criteria are used to automatically determine the complexity of the lens distortion model. In the first stage experiments were performed to verify and compare the performance of the calibration method. Experiments were performed on a wide range of lenses. Synthetic data was used to simulate real data and validate the performance. Synthetic data was also used to validate the performance of the distortion model selection which uses Information Theoretic Criterion (AIC) to automatically select the complexity of the distortion model. In the second stage work was done to develop an improved calibration procedure which addresses shortcomings of previously developed method. Experiments on the previous method revealed that the estimation of the principal point during calibration was erroneous for lenses with a large focal length. To address this issue the calibration method was modified to include additional methods to accurately estimate the principal point in the initial stages of the calibration procedure. The modified procedure can now be used to calibrate a wide spectrum of imaging systems including telephoto and verifocal lenses. Survey of current work revealed a vast amount of research concentrating on calibrating only the distortion of the camera. In these methods researchers propose methods to calibrate only the distortion parameters and suggest using other popular methods to find the remaining camera parameters. Using this proposed methodology we apply distortion calibration to our methods to separate the estimation of distortion parameters. We show and compare the results with the original method on a wide range of imaging systems

    Modelling and tracking objects with a topology preserving self-organising neural network

    Human gestures form an integral part in our everyday communication. We use gestures not only to reinforce meaning, but also to describe the shape of objects, to play games, and to communicate in noisy environments. Vision systems that exploit gestures are often limited by inaccuracies inherent in handcrafted models. These models are generated from a collection of training examples which requires segmentation and alignment. Segmentation in gesture recognition typically involves manual intervention, a time consuming process that is feasible only for a limited set of gestures. Ideally gesture models should be automatically acquired via a learning scheme that enables the acquisition of detailed behavioural knowledge only from topological and temporal observation. The research described in this thesis is motivated by a desire to provide a framework for the unsupervised acquisition and tracking of gesture models. In any learning framework, the initialisation of the shapes is very crucial. Hence, it would be beneficial to have a robust model not prone to noise that can automatically correspond the set of shapes. In the first part of this thesis, we develop a framework for building statistical 2D shape models by extracting, labelling and corresponding landmark points using only topological relations derived from competitive hebbian learning. The method is based on the assumption that correspondences can be addressed as an unsupervised classification problem where landmark points are the cluster centres (nodes) in a high-dimensional vector space. The approach is novel in that the network can be used in cases where the topological structure of the input pattern is not known a priori thus no topology of fixed dimensionality is imposed onto the network. In the second part, we propose an approach to minimise the user intervention in the adaptation process, which requires to specify a priori the number of nodes needed to represent an object, by utilising an automatic criterion for maximum node growth. Furthermore, this model is used to represent motion in image sequences by initialising a suitable segmentation that separates the object of interest from the background. The segmentation system takes into consideration some illumination tolerance, images as inputs from ordinary cameras and webcams, some low to medium cluttered background avoiding extremely cluttered backgrounds, and that the objects are at close range from the camera. In the final part, we extend the framework for the automatic modelling and unsupervised tracking of 2D hand gestures in a sequence of k frames. The aim is to use the tracked frames as training examples in order to build the model and maintain correspondences. To do that we add an active step to the Growing Neural Gas (GNG) network, which we call Active Growing Neural Gas (A-GNG) that takes into consideration not only the geometrical position of the nodes, but also the underlined local feature structure of the image, and the distance vector between successive images. The quality of our model is measured through the calculation of the topographic product. The topographic product is our topology preserving measure which quantifies the neighbourhood preservation. In our system we have applied specific restrictions in the velocity and the appearance of the gestures to simplify the difficulty of the motion analysis in the gesture representation. The proposed framework has been validated on applications related to sign language. The work has great potential in Virtual Reality (VR) applications where the learning and the representation of gestures becomes natural without the need of expensive wear cable sensors

    The Probabilistic Active Shape Model: From Model Construction to Flexible Medical Image Segmentation

    Automatic processing of three-dimensional image data acquired with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging plays an increasingly important role in medicine. For example, the automatic segmentation of anatomical structures in tomographic images allows to generate three-dimensional visualizations of a patient’s anatomy and thereby supports surgeons during planning of various kinds of surgeries. Because organs in medical images often exhibit a low contrast to adjacent structures, and because the image quality may be hampered by noise or other image acquisition artifacts, the development of segmentation algorithms that are both robust and accurate is very challenging. In order to increase the robustness, the use of model-based algorithms is mandatory, as for example algorithms that incorporate prior knowledge about an organ’s shape into the segmentation process. Recent research has proven that Statistical Shape Models are especially appropriate for robust medical image segmentation. In these models, the typical shape of an organ is learned from a set of training examples. However, Statistical Shape Models have two major disadvantages: The construction of the models is relatively difficult, and the models are often used too restrictively, such that the resulting segmentation does not delineate the organ exactly. This thesis addresses both problems: The first part of the thesis introduces new methods for establishing correspondence between training shapes, which is a necessary prerequisite for shape model learning. The developed methods include consistent parameterization algorithms for organs with spherical and genus 1 topology, as well as a nonrigid mesh registration algorithm for shapes with arbitrary topology. The second part of the thesis presents a new shape model-based segmentation algorithm that allows for an accurate delineation of organs. In contrast to existing approaches, it is possible to integrate not only linear shape models into the algorithm, but also nonlinear shape models, which allow for a more specific description of an organ’s shape variation. The proposed segmentation algorithm is evaluated in three applications to medical image data: Liver and vertebra segmentation in contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans, and prostate segmentation in magnetic resonance images

    3D reconstruction of medical images from slices automatically landmarked with growing neural models

    In this study, we utilise a novel approach to segment out the ventricular system in a series of high resolution T1-weighted MR images. We present a brain ventricles fast reconstruction method. The method is based on the processing of brain sections and establishing a fixed number of landmarks onto those sections to reconstruct the ventricles 3D surface. Automated landmark extraction is accomplished through the use of the self-organising network, the growing neural gas (GNG), which is able to topographically map the low dimensionality of the network to the high dimensionality of the contour manifold without requiring a priori knowledge of the input space structure. Moreover, our GNG landmark method is tolerant to noise and eliminates outliers. Our method accelerates the classical surface reconstruction and filtering processes. The proposed method offers higher accuracy compared to methods with similar efficiency as Voxel Grid
