MODELING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A SPHERICAL UUV PLATFORM CONTROL SYSTEM FOR LITTORAL AND CONFINED-SPACE OPERATIONS

    Get PDF
Unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) offer a unique opportunity to safely explore areas too dangerous for human divers. The purpose of this research is to model and implement a robust closed-loop control method for the Wreck Interior Exploration Vehicle (WIEVLE), a novel UUV conceptualized, built, and tested exclusively on the Naval Postgraduate School campus. This work builds on previous open-loop testing and experimentation by a capstone Systems Engineering team of students in 2020. Expanding on their work, a MATLAB/Simulink simulation was created to test the proposed control scheme. To validate computer modeling results, the Pixhawk drone autopilot feasibility was tested as a commercial off the shelf solution for control. Due to the constraints of the autopilot, it was deemed infeasible for use in this application. We suggest as future work another approach that was unable to be implemented prior to release.Approved for public release. Distribution is unlimited.Lieutenant, United States Nav

Virtual Structures Based Autonomous Formation Flying Control for Small Satellites

    Get PDF
Many space organizations have a growing need to fly several small satellites close together in order to collect and correlate data from different satellite sensors. To do this requires teams of engineers monitoring the satellites orbits and planning maneuvers for the satellites every time the satellite leaves its desired trajectory or formation. This task of maintaining the satellites orbits quickly becomes an arduous and expensive feat for satellite operations centers. This research develops and analyzes algorithms that allow satellites to autonomously control their orbit and formation without human intervention. This goal is accomplished by developing and evaluating a decentralized, optimization-based control that can be used for autonomous formation flight of small satellites. To do this, virtual structures, model predictive control, and switching surfaces are used. An optimized guidance trajectory is also develop to reduce fuel usage of the system. The Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire equations and the D\u27Amico relative orbital elements are used to describe the relative motion of the satellites. And a performance comparison of the L1, L2, and L∞ norms is completed as part of this work. The virtual structure, MPC based framework combined with the switching surfaces enables a scalable method that allows satellites to maneuver safely within their formation, while also minimizing fuel usage

This Special Issue is devoted to recent developments in instrumentation and measurement techniques applied to the marine field. ¶The sea is the medium that has allowed people to travel from one continent to another using vessels, even today despite the use of aircraft. It has also been acting as a great reservoir and source of food for all living beings. However, for many generations, it served as a landfill for depositing conventional and nuclear wastes, especially in its deep seabeds, and we are assisting in a race to exploit minerals and resources, different from foods, encompassed in it. Its health is a great challenge for the survival of all humanity since it is one of the most important environmental components targeted by global warming. ¶ As everyone may know, measuring is a step that generates substantial knowledge about a phenomenon or an asset, which is the basis for proposing correct solutions and making proper decisions. However, measurements in the sea environment pose unique difficulties and opportunities, which is made clear from the research results presented in this Special Issue

Feature Papers of Drones - Volume II

    Get PDF
[EN] The present book is divided into two volumes (Volume I: articles 1–23, and Volume II: articles 24–54) which compile the articles and communications submitted to the Topical Collection ”Feature Papers of Drones” during the years 2020 to 2022 describing novel or new cutting-edge designs, developments, and/or applications of unmanned vehicles (drones). Articles 24–41 are focused on drone applications, but emphasize two types: firstly, those related to agriculture and forestry (articles 24–35) where the number of applications of drones dominates all other possible applications. These articles review the latest research and future directions for precision agriculture, vegetation monitoring, change monitoring, forestry management, and forest fires. Secondly, articles 36–41 addresses the water and marine application of drones for ecological and conservation-related applications with emphasis on the monitoring of water resources and habitat monitoring. Finally, articles 42–54 looks at just a few of the huge variety of potential applications of civil drones from different points of view, including the following: the social acceptance of drone operations in urban areas or their influential factors; 3D reconstruction applications; sensor technologies to either improve the performance of existing applications or to open up new working areas; and machine and deep learning development
