    System configuration, fault detection, location, isolation and restoration: a review on LVDC Microgrid protections

    Low voltage direct current (LVDC) distribution has gained the significant interest of research due to the advancements in power conversion technologies. However, the use of converters has given rise to several technical issues regarding their protections and controls of such devices under faulty conditions. Post-fault behaviour of converter-fed LVDC system involves both active converter control and passive circuit transient of similar time scale, which makes the protection for LVDC distribution significantly different and more challenging than low voltage AC. These protection and operational issues have handicapped the practical applications of DC distribution. This paper presents state-of-the-art protection schemes developed for DC Microgrids. With a close look at practical limitations such as the dependency on modelling accuracy, requirement on communications and so forth, a comprehensive evaluation is carried out on those system approaches in terms of system configurations, fault detection, location, isolation and restoration

    Optimal Control of Hybrid Systems and Renewable Energies

    This book is a collection of papers covering various aspects of the optimal control of power and energy production from renewable resources (wind, PV, biomass, hydrogen, etc.). In particular, attention is focused both on the optimal control of new technologies and on their integration in buildings, microgrids, and energy markets.     A study of smart grids for railways

    The smart grid is a next-generation electric power supply grid in which IT technologies are applied to optimise energy efficiency through the exchange of power information between suppliers and consumers in real time. To date, smart grid research has been focussed on the home and domestic sectors, while little progress has been made in developing smart grids for railways. This likely stems from the complexity of electric railway traction systems, which must supply multiple electrical trains with variable electrical loads depending on varying combinations of trains and train operation requirements including maintaining constant speed and reducing speed. Therefore, this thesis proposes to assess the hypothesis that renewable energy, which is one of the representative technologies used in smart grids, can in fact be applied in railway traction power systems. This thesis is also an oriented study that provides guidance in the advance planning of grid systems to be implemented in the near future. In addition to contributions to the development of railway traction systems, it is also hoped that the results will help in intensifying the international competitiveness of railways in terms of greenhouse gas reduction and the reduction of energy imports

    Review of machine-vision based methodologies for displacement measurement in civil structures

The final version is available from Springer Verlag via the DOI in this record.Vision-based systems are promising tools for displacement measurement in civil structures, possessing advantages over traditional displacement sensors in instrumentation cost, installation efforts and measurement capacity in terms of frequency range and spatial resolution. Approximately one hundred papers to date have appeared on this subject, investigating topics like: system development and improvement, the viability on field applications and the potential for structural condition assessment. The main contribution of this paper is to present a literature review of vision-based displacement measurement, from the perspectives of methodologies and applications. Video processing procedures in this paper are summarised as a three-component framework, camera calibration, target tracking and structural displacement calculation. Methods for each component are presented in principle, with discussions about the relative advantages and limitations. Applications in the two most active fields: bridge deformation and cable vibration measurement are examined followed by a summary of field challenges observed in monitoring tests. Important gaps requiring further investigation are presented e.g. robust tracking methods, non-contact sensing and measurement accuracy evaluation in field conditions

    Machine Learning based Wind Power Forecasting for Operational Decision Support

    To utilize renewable energy efficiently to meet the needs of mankind's living demands becomes an extremely hot topic since global warming is the most serious global environmental problem that human beings are facing today. Burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil directly for generating electricity leads to environment pollution and exacerbates global warning. However, large-scale development of hydropower increases greenhouse gas emissions and greenhouse effects. This research is related to knowledge of wind power forecasting (WPF) and machine learning (ML). This research is built around one central research question: How to improve the accuracy of WPF by using AI methods? A pilot conceptual system combining meteorological information and operations management has been formulated. The main contribution is visualized in a proposed new framework, named Meteorological Information Service Decision Support System, consisting of a meteorological information module, wind power prediction module and operations management module. This conceptual framework has been verified by quantitative analysis in empirical cases. This system utilizes meteorological information for decision-making based on condition-based maintenance in operations and management for the purpose of optimizing energy management. It aims to analyze and predict the variation of wind power for the next day or the following week to develop scheduling planning services for WPEs based on predicting wind speed for every six hours, which is short-term wind speed prediction, through training, validating, and testing dataset. Accurate prediction of wind speed is crucial for weather forecasting service and WPF. This study presents a carefully designed wind speed prediction model which combines fully-connected neural network (FCNN), long short-term memory (LSTM) algorithm with eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) technique, to predict wind speed. The performance of each model is tested by using reanalysis data from European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) for Meteorological observatory located in Vaasa in Finland. The results show that XGBoost algorithm has similar improved prediction performance as LSTM algorithm, in terms of RMSE, MAE and R2 compared to the commonly used traditional FCNN model. On the other hand, the XGBoost algorithm has a significant advantage on training time while comparing to the other algorithms in this case study. Additionally, this sensitivity analysis indicates great potential of the optimized deep learning (DL) method, which is a subset of machine learning (ML), in improving local weather forecast on the coding platform of Python. The results indicate that, by using Meteorological Information Service Decision Support System, it is possible to support effective decision-making and create timely actions within the WPEs. Findings from this research contribute to WPF in WPEs. The main contribution of this research is achieving decision optimization on a decision support system by using ML. It was concluded that the proposed system is very promising for potential applications in wind (power) energy management

    Research on the System Safety Management in Urban Railway

    Nowadays, rail transport has become one of the most widely utilised forms of transport thanks to its high safety level, large capacity, and cost-effectiveness. With the railway network's continuous development, including urban rail transit, one of the major areas of increasing attention and demand is ensuring safety or risk management in operation long-term remains for the whole life cycle by scientific tools, management of railway operation (Martani 2017), specifically in developed and developing countries like Vietnam. The situation in Vietnam demonstrates that the national mainline railway network has been built and operated entirely in a single narrow gauge (1000mm) since the previous century, with very few updates of manual operating technology. This significantly highlights that up to now, the conventional technique for managing the safety operation in general, and collision in particular, of the current Vietnamese railway system, including its subsystems, is only accident statistics which is not a scientific-based tool as the others like risk identify and analyse methods, risk mitigation…, that are already available in many countries. Accident management of Vietnam Railways is limited and responsible for accident statistics analysis to avoid and minimise the harm caused by phenomena that occur only after an accident. Statistical analysis of train accident case studies in Vietnam railway demonstrates that, because hazards and failures that could result in serious system occurrences (accidents and incidents) have not been identified, recorded, and evaluated to conduct safety-driven risk analysis using a well-suited assessment methodology, risk prevention and control cannot be achieved. Not only is it hard to forecast and avoid events, but it may also raise the chance and amount of danger, as well as the severity of the later effects. As a result, Vietnam's railway system has a high number of accidents and failure rates. For example, Vietnam Rail-ways' mainline network accounted for approximately 200 railway accidents in 2018, a 3% increase over the previous year, including 163 collisions between trains and road vehicles/persons, resulting in more than 100 fatalities and more than 150 casualties; 16 accidents, including almost derailments, the signal passed at danger… without fatality or casual-ty, but significant damage to rolling stock and track infrastructure (VR 2021). Focusing and developing a new standardised framework for safety management and availability of railway operation in Vietnam is required in view of the rapid development of rail urban transport in the country in recent years (VmoT 2016; VmoT 2018). UMRT Line HN2A in southwest Hanoi is the country's first elevated light rail transit line, which was completed and officially put into revenue service in November 2021. This greatly highlights that up to the current date, the UMRT Line HN2A is the first and only railway line in Vietnam with operational safety assessment launched for the first time and long-term remains for the whole life cycle. The fact that the UMRT Hanoi has a large capacity, more complicated rolling stock and infrastructure equipment, as well as a modern communica-tion-based train control (CBTC) signalling system and automatic train driving without the need for operator intervention (Lindqvist 2006), are all advantages. Developing a compatible and integrated safety management system (SMS) for adaption to the safety operating requirements of this UMRT is an important major point of concern, and this should be proven. In actuality, the system acceptance and safety certification phase for Metro Line HN2A prolonged up to 2.5 years owing to the identification of difficulties with noncompliance to safety requirements resulting from inadequate SMS documents and risk assessment. These faults and hazards have developed during the manufacturing and execution of the project; it is impossible to go back in time to correct them, and it is also impossible to ignore the project without assuming responsibility for its management. At the time of completion, the HN2A metro line will have required an expenditure of up to $868 million, thus it is vital to create measures to prevent system failure and assure passenger safety. This dissertation has reviewed the methods to solve the aforementioned challenges and presented a solution blueprint to attain the European standard level of system safety in three-phase as in the following: • Phase 1: applicable for lines that are currently in operation, such as Metro Line HN2A. Focused on operational and maintenance procedures, as well as a training plan for railway personnel, in order to enhance human performance. Complete and update the risk assessment framework for Metro Line HN2A. The dissertation's findings are described in these applications. • Phase 2: applicable for lines that are currently in construction and manufacturing, such as Metro Line HN3, Line HN2, HCMC Line 1 and Line 2. Continue refining and enhancing engineering management methods introduced during Phase 1. On the basis of the risk assessment by manufacturers (Line HN3, HCMC Line 2 with European manufacturers) and the risk assessment framework described in Chapter 4, a risk management plan for each line will be developed. Building Accident database for risk assessment research and development. • Phase 3: applicable for lines that are currently in planning. Enhance safety requirements and life-cycle management. Building a proactive Safety Culture step by step for the railway industry. This material is implemented gradually throughout all three phases, beginning with the creation of the concept and concluding with an improvement in the attitude of railway personnel on the HN2A line. In addition to this overview, Chapters 4 through Chapter 9 of the dissertation include particular solutions for Risk assessment, Vehicle and Infrastructure Maintenance methods, Inci-dent Management procedures, and Safety Culture installation.     Functional Description and Control Design of Modular Multilevel Converters:Towards Energy Storage Applications for Traction Networks

    The security of supply is becoming an important concern in the energy supply of the railway networks operated at 16.7âHz. This situation calls for the improvement of the interconnection with the 50âHz grid and creates a need for ancillary services, especially in relation to power quality. To these ends, Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) are highly attractive as they are ideally suited for the corresponding voltage and power levels and are sufficiently versatile to adapt easily to the numerous applications affected by these needs. Besides, there attractiveness can be further increased if energy storage is embedded inside the converters, which are then able to provide a broad range of ancillary services. Practically, such a perspective is enabled by the fact that the submodules can directly integrate storage in a distributed manner, essentially limiting design concerns to control issues. By 2014, MMCs have been adopted by most major power electronics manufacturers (ABB, Siemens, Alstom, etc.) and constitute a rapidly expanding topic, drawing the attention of numerous academic research groups worldwide. This illustrates the breakthrough represented by this technology, which is notably due to the fact that their modular nature imposes operating principles that are fundamentally different from those of conventional structures, but what also allows unprecedented flexibility and scalability. Being given the numerous ongoing industrial projects in relation to railways, the relevance of MMCs in these applications is already largely proven. However, the integration of split storage in MMCs has still received only little attention. This thesis will even propose the use of hybrid split storage, which has apparently not been studied at all. In both cases, the development of energy management mechanisms has apparently not been addressed yet and the control design as a whole is also limited to few developments only. On the other hand, there are already numerous control solutions for the cases without storage, among which it is sometimes difficult to make wise choices. In this context, before adding energy storage (and its associated management mechanisms) to already complex control problems, it is important to rely on a sound basis, what is the main motivation for this thesis to develop a set of tools that can allow to take a step back on the control design in general. Firstly, this thesis proposes different representations of MMCs, providing a macroscopic view of their behavior and allowing a new interpretation of their principles of operation. As it will be seen, these results are useful to both control design and system engineering purposes. Secondly, using the principles of the Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR), this work presents a methodology for the systematic control design of MMCs, based on the functional inversion of a system model. Finally, the obtained results are validated on known structures before being extended to other converter systems including energy storage. In parallel to these developments, several digressions are also made to comment on the issues related to the control hardware and on the possible applications of energy storage in railways. In the end, these developments are expected to contribute to improve the modularization of the control in general, which is one of the possible ways to provide maximum flexibility, speed and effectiveness in the overall design of MMC systems for all types of applications
