    Web server load prediction and anomaly detection from hypertext transfer protocol logs

    As network traffic increases and new intrusions occur, anomaly detection solutions based on machine learning are necessary to detect previously unknown intrusion patterns. Most of the developed models require a labelled dataset, which can be challenging owing to a shortage of publicly available datasets. These datasets are often too small to effectively train machine learning models, which further motivates the use of real unlabeled traffic. By using real traffic, it is possible to more accurately simulate the types of anomalies that might occur in a real-world network and improve the performance of the detection model. We present a method able to predict and categorize anomalies without the aid of a labelled dataset, demonstrating the model’s usability while also gathering a dataset from real noisy network traffic. The proposed long short-term memory (LTSM) based intrusion detection system was tested in a real-world setting of an antivirus company and was successful in detecting various intrusions using 5-minute windowing over both the predicted and real update curves thereby demonstrating its usefulness. Our contribution was the development of a robust model generally applicable to any hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) traffic with almost real-time anomaly detection, while also outperforming earlier studies in terms of prediction accuracy

    From statistical- to machine learning-based network traffic prediction

    Nowadays, due to the exponential and continuous expansion of new paradigms such as Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Vehicles (IoV) and 6G, the world is witnessing a tremendous and sharp increase of network traffic. In such large-scale, heterogeneous, and complex networks, the volume of transferred data, as big data, is considered a challenge causing different networking inefficiencies. To overcome these challenges, various techniques are introduced to monitor the performance of networks, called Network Traffic Monitoring and Analysis (NTMA). Network Traffic Prediction (NTP) is a significant subfield of NTMA which is mainly focused on predicting the future of network load and its behavior. NTP techniques can generally be realized in two ways, that is, statistical- and Machine Learning (ML)-based. In this paper, we provide a study on existing NTP techniques through reviewing, investigating, and classifying the recent relevant works conducted in this field. For example, the high model capacity of the learning-based architectures enables us to accurately model the image and video behavior such that tremendous compression gains can be achieved. Similarly, error concealment, streaming strategy or even user perception modeling have widely benefited from the recent learningoriented developments. However, learning-based algorithms often imply drastic changes to the way data are represented or consumed, meaning that the overall pipeline can be affected even though a subpart of it is optimized. In this paper, we review the recent major advances that have been proposed all across the transmission chain, and we discuss their potential impact and the research challenges that they raise

    A Microscopic Simulation Laboratory for Evaluation of Off-street Parking Systems

    The parking industry produces an enormous amount of data every day that, properly analyzed, will change the way the industry operates. The collected data form patterns that, in most cases, would allow parking operators and property owners to better understand how to maximize revenue and decrease operating expenses and support the decisions such as how to set specific parking policies (e.g. electrical charging only parking space) to achieve the sustainable and eco-friendly parking. However, there lacks an intelligent tool to assess the layout design and operational performance of parking lots to reduce the externalities and increase the revenue. To address this issue, this research presents a comprehensive agent-based framework for microscopic off-street parking system simulation. A rule-based parking simulation logic programming model is formulated. The proposed simulation model can effectively capture the behaviors of drivers and pedestrians as well as spatial and temporal interactions of traffic dynamics in the parking system. A methodology for data collection, processing, and extraction of user behaviors in the parking system is also developed. A Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) neural network is used to predict the arrival and departure of the vehicles. The proposed simulator is implemented in Java and a Software as a Service (SaaS) graphic user interface is designed to analyze and visualize the simulation results. This study finds the active capacity of the parking system, which is defined as the largest number of actively moving vehicles in the parking system under the facility layout. In the system application of the real world testbed, the numerical tests show (a) the smart check-in device has marginal benefits in vehicle waiting time; (b) the flexible pricing policy may increase the average daily revenue if the elasticity of the price is not involved; (c) the number of electrical charging only spots has a negative impact on the performance of the parking facility; and (d) the rear-in only policy may increase the duration of parking maneuvers and reduce the efficiency during the arrival rush hour. Application of the developed simulation system using a real-world case demonstrates its capability of providing informative quantitative measures to support decisions in designing, maintaining, and operating smart parking facilities

    Novel applications of Machine Learning to Network Traffic Analysis and Prediction

    It is now clear that machine learning will be widely used in future telecommunication networks as it is increasingly used in today's networks. However, despite its increasing application and its enormous potential, there are still many areas in which the new techniques developed in the area of machine learning are not yet fully utilized. The aim of this thesis is to present the application of innovative techniques of machine learning (ML-Machine Learning) in the field of Telecommunications, and specifically to problems related to the analysis and prediction of traffic in data networks (NTAP - Network Traffic Analysis and Prediction). The applications of NTAP are very broad, so this thesis focuses on the following five specific areas: - Prediction of connectivity of wireless devices. - Security intrusion detection, using network traffic information - Classification of network traffic, using the headers of the transmitted network packets - Estimation of the quality of the experience perceived by the user (QoE) when viewing multimedia streaming, using aggregate information of the network packets - Generation of synthetic traffic associated with security attacks and use of that synthetic traffic to improve security intrusion detection algorithms. The final intention is to create prediction and analysis models that produce improvements in the NTAP areas mentioned above. With this objective, this thesis provides advances in the application of machine learning techniques to the area of NTAP. These advances consist of: - Development of new machine learning models and architectures for NTAP - Define new ways to structure and transform training data so that existing machine learning models can be applied to specific NTAP problems. - Define algorithms for the creation of synthetic network traffic associated with specific events in the operation of the network (for example, specific types of intrusions), ensuring that the new synthetic data can be used as new training data. - Extension and application of classic models of machine learning to the area of NTAP, obtaining improvements in the classification or regression metrics and/or improvements in the performance measures of the algorithms (e.g. training time, prediction time, memory needs, ...).Departamento de Teoría de la Señal y Comunicaciones e Ingeniería TelemáticaDoctorado en Tecnologías de la Información y las Telecomunicacione
