    A Cooperative Approach for Composite Ontology Matching

    Ontologies have proven to be an essential element in a range of applications in which knowl-edge plays a key role. Resolving the semantic heterogeneity problem is crucial to allow the interoperability between ontology-based systems. This makes automatic ontology matching, as an anticipated solution to semantic heterogeneity, an important, research issue. Many dif-ferent approaches to the matching problem have emerged from the literature. An important issue of ontology matching is to find effective ways of choosing among many techniques and their variations, and then combining their results. An innovative and promising option is to formalize the combination of matching techniques using agent-based approaches, such as cooperative negotiation and argumentation. In this thesis, the formalization of the on-tology matching problem following an agent-based approach is proposed. Such proposal is evaluated using state-of-the-art data sets. The results show that the consensus obtained by negotiation and argumentation represent intermediary values which are closer to the best matcher. As the best matcher may vary depending on specific differences of multiple data sets, cooperative approaches are an advantage. *** RESUMO - Ontologias são elementos essenciais em sistemas baseados em conhecimento. Resolver o problema de heterogeneidade semântica é fundamental para permitira interoperabilidade entre sistemas baseados em ontologias. Mapeamento automático de ontologias pode ser visto como uma solução para esse problema. Diferentes e complementares abordagens para o problema são propostas na literatura. Um aspecto importante em mapeamento consiste em selecionar o conjunto adequado de abordagens e suas variações, e então combinar seus resultados. Uma opção promissora envolve formalizara combinação de técnicas de ma-peamento usando abordagens baseadas em agentes cooperativos, tais como negociação e argumentação. Nesta tese, a formalização do problema de combinação de técnicas de ma-peamento usando tais abordagens é proposta e avaliada. A avaliação, que envolve conjuntos de testes sugeridos pela comunidade científica, permite concluir que o consenso obtido pela negociação e pela argumentação não é exatamente a melhoria de todos os resultados individuais, mas representa os valores intermediários que são próximo da melhor técnica. Considerando que a melhor técnica pode variar dependendo de diferencas específicas de múltiplas bases de dados, abordagens cooperativas são uma vantagem

    Survey of the State of the Art in Natural Language Generation: Core tasks, applications and evaluation

    This paper surveys the current state of the art in Natural Language Generation (NLG), defined as the task of generating text or speech from non-linguistic input. A survey of NLG is timely in view of the changes that the field has undergone over the past decade or so, especially in relation to new (usually data-driven) methods, as well as new applications of NLG technology. This survey therefore aims to (a) give an up-to-date synthesis of research on the core tasks in NLG and the architectures adopted in which such tasks are organised; (b) highlight a number of relatively recent research topics that have arisen partly as a result of growing synergies between NLG and other areas of artificial intelligence; (c) draw attention to the challenges in NLG evaluation, relating them to similar challenges faced in other areas of Natural Language Processing, with an emphasis on different evaluation methods and the relationships between them.Comment: Published in Journal of AI Research (JAIR), volume 61, pp 75-170. 118 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

    Improved Coreference Resolution Using Cognitive Insights

    Coreference resolution is the task of extracting referential expressions, or mentions, in text and clustering these by the entity or concept they refer to. The sustained research interest in the task reflects the richness of reference expression usage in natural language and the difficulty in encoding insights from linguistic and cognitive theories effectively. In this thesis, we design and implement LIMERIC, a state-of-the-art coreference resolution engine. LIMERIC naturally incorporates both non-local decoding and entity-level modelling to achieve the highly competitive benchmark performance of 64.22% and 59.99% on the CoNLL-2012 benchmark with a simple model and a baseline feature set. As well as strong performance, a key contribution of this work is a reconceptualisation of the coreference task. We draw an analogy between shift-reduce parsing and coreference resolution to develop an algorithm which naturally mimics cognitive models of human discourse processing. In our feature development work, we leverage insights from cognitive theories to improve our modelling. Each contribution achieves statistically significant improvements and sum to gains of 1.65% and 1.66% on the CoNLL-2012 benchmark, yielding performance values of 65.76% and 61.27%. For each novel feature we propose, we contribute an accompanying analysis so as to better understand how cognitive theories apply to real language data. LIMERIC is at once a platform for exploring cognitive insights into coreference and a viable alternative to current systems. We are excited by the promise of incorporating our and further cognitive insights into more complex frameworks since this has the potential to both improve the performance of computational models, as well as our understanding of the mechanisms underpinning human reference resolution

    Holistic Vocabulary Independent Spoken Term Detection

    Within this thesis, we aim at designing a loosely coupled holistic system for Spoken Term Detection (STD) on heterogeneous German broadcast data in selected application scenarios. Starting from STD on the 1-best output of a word-based speech recognizer, we study the performance of several subword units for vocabulary independent STD on a linguistically and acoustically challenging German corpus. We explore the typical error sources in subword STD, and find that they differ from the error sources in word-based speech search. We select, extend and combine a set of state-of-the-art methods for error compensation in STD in order to explicitly merge the corresponding STD error spaces through anchor-based approximate lattice retrieval. Novel methods for STD result verification are proposed in order to increase retrieval precision by exploiting external knowledge at search time. Error-compensating methods for STD typically suffer from high response times on large scale databases, and we propose scalable approaches suitable for large corpora. Highest STD accuracy is obtained by combining anchor-based approximate retrieval from both syllable lattice ASR and syllabified word ASR into a hybrid STD system, and pruning the result list using external knowledge with hybrid contextual and anti-query verification.Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt ein lose gekoppeltes, ganzheitliches System zur Sprachsuche auf heterogenenen deutschen Sprachdaten in unterschiedlichen Anwendungsszenarien. Ausgehend von einer wortbasierten Sprachsuche auf dem Transkript eines aktuellen Wort-Erkenners werden zunächst unterschiedliche Subwort-Einheiten für die vokabularunabhängige Sprachsuche auf deutschen Daten untersucht. Auf dieser Basis werden die typischen Fehlerquellen in der Subwort-basierten Sprachsuche analysiert. Diese Fehlerquellen unterscheiden sich vom Fall der klassichen Suche im Worttranskript und müssen explizit adressiert werden. Die explizite Kompensation der unterschiedlichen Fehlerquellen erfolgt durch einen neuartigen hybriden Ansatz zur effizienten Ankerbasierten unscharfen Wortgraph-Suche. Darüber hinaus werden neuartige Methoden zur Verifikation von Suchergebnissen vorgestellt, die zur Suchzeit verfügbares externes Wissen einbeziehen. Alle vorgestellten Verfahren werden auf einem umfangreichen Satz von deutschen Fernsehdaten mit Fokus auf ausgewählte, repräsentative Einsatzszenarien evaluiert. Da Methoden zur Fehlerkompensation in der Sprachsuchforschung typischerweise zu hohen Laufzeiten bei der Suche in großen Archiven führen, werden insbesondere auch Szenarien mit sehr großen Datenmengen betrachtet. Die höchste Suchleistung für Archive mittlerer Größe wird durch eine unscharfe und Anker-basierte Suche auf einem hybriden Index aus Silben-Wortgraphen und silbifizierter Wort-Erkennung erreicht, bei der die Suchergebnisse mit hybrider Verifikation bereinigt werden

    Gesture in Automatic Discourse Processing

    Computers cannot fully understand spoken language without access to the wide range of modalities that accompany speech. This thesis addresses the particularly expressive modality of hand gesture, and focuses on building structured statistical models at the intersection of speech, vision, and meaning.My approach is distinguished in two key respects. First, gestural patterns are leveraged to discover parallel structures in the meaning of the associated speech. This differs from prior work that attempted to interpret individual gestures directly, an approach that was prone to a lack of generality across speakers. Second, I present novel, structured statistical models for multimodal language processing, which enable learning about gesture in its linguistic context, rather than in the abstract.These ideas find successful application in a variety of language processing tasks: resolving ambiguous noun phrases, segmenting speech into topics, and producing keyframe summaries of spoken language. In all three cases, the addition of gestural features -- extracted automatically from video -- yields significantly improved performance over a state-of-the-art text-only alternative. This marks the first demonstration that hand gesture improves automatic discourse processing

    Rules, frequency, and predictability in morphological generalization: behavioral and computational evidence from the German plural system

    Morphological generalization, or the task of mapping an unknown word (such as a novel noun Raun) to an inflected form (such as the plural Rauns), has historically proven a contested topic within computational linguistics and cognitive science, e.g. within the past tense debate (Rumelhart and McClelland, 1986; Pinker and Prince, 1988; Seidenberg and Plaut, 2014). Marcus et al. (1995) identified German plural inflection as a key challenge domain to evaluate two competing accounts of morphological generalization: a rule generation view focused on linguistic features of input words, and a type frequency view focused on the distribution of output inflected forms, thought to reflect more domain-general cognitive processes. More recent behavioral and computational research developments support a new view based on predictability, which integrates both input and output distributions. My research uses these methodological innovations to revisit a core dispute of the past tense debate: how do German speakers generalize plural inflection, and can computational learners generalize similarly? This dissertation evaluates the rule generation, type frequency, and predictability accounts of morphological generalization in a series of behavioral and computational experiments with the stimuli developed by Marcus et al.. I assess predictions for three aspects of German plural generalization: distribution of infrequent plural classes, influence of grammatical gender, and within-item variability. Overall, I find that speaker behavior is best characterized as frequency-matching to a phonologically-conditioned lexical distribution. This result does not support the rule generation view, and qualifies the predictability view: speakers use some, but not all available information to reduce uncertainty in morphological generalization. Neural and symbolic model predictions are typically overconfident relative to speakers; simple Bayesian models show somewhat higher speaker-like variability and accuracy. All computational models are outperformed by a static phonologically-conditioned lexical baseline, suggesting these models have not learned the selective feature preferences that inform speaker generalization
