Analysis and Performance Comparison of DVB-T and DTMB Systems for Terrestrial Digital TV
Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is the most popular
transmission technology in digital terrestrial broadcasting (DTTB), adopted by
many DTTB standards. In this paper, the bit error rate (BER) performance of two
DTTB systems, namely cyclic prefix OFDM (CP-OFDM) based DVB-T and time domain
synchronous OFDM (TDS-OFDM) based DTMB, is evaluated in different channel
conditions. Spectrum utilization and power efficiency are also discussed to
demonstrate the transmission overhead of both systems. Simulation results show
that the performances of the two systems are much close. Given the same ratio
of guard interval (GI), the DVB-T outperforms DTMB in terms of signal to noise
ratio (SNR) in Gaussian and Ricean channels, while DTMB behaves better
performance in Rayleigh channel in higher code rates and higher orders of
constellation thanks to its efficient channel coding and interleaving scheme

Cognitive radio for TVWS usage
Spectrum scarcity is an emerging issue in wireless communication systems due to the increasing demand of broadband services like mobile communications, wireless internet access, IoT applications, among others. The migration of analog TV to digital systems (a.k.a. digital TV switchover) has led to the release of a significant spectrum share that can be used to support said additional services. Likewise, TV white spaces emerge as spectral opportunities that can also be explored. Hence, cognitive radio (CR) presents itself as a feasible approach to efficiently use resources and exploit gaps within the spectrum. The goal of this paper is to unveil the state of the art revolving around the usage of TV white spaces, including some of the most important methods developed to exploit such spaces, upcoming opportunities, challenges for future research projects, and suggestions to improve current models
Emulation of a dynamic broadcasting network with adaptive radiated power in a real scenario
Broadcasting networks are an efficient means for delivering media content to a high density of users, because their operational cost is almost independent of the size of their audience for a given coverage area. However, when the propagation conditions are better than the worst-case design, the energy efficiency is suboptimal. In this paper, we present the results of a trial to emulate the performance of a dynamic broadcasting network with adaptive radiated power in a real broadcasting scenario. We assess the radiated power of the broadcasting network in a Cuban environment by means of a monitoring device. The power consumption of the dynamic broadcasting network with adaptive radiated power is assessed and compared with traditional broadcasting for different implementation margins. To emulate the performance of the dynamic broadcasting network with adaptive radiated power, we consider a commercial Digital Terrestrial Multimedia Broadcast (DTMB) transmitter in Havana, Cuba. Testbed hardware is designed and developed to measure the fading with a commercial receiver and emulate the signal reception under adaptive power conditions. The dynamic broadcasting network performance is assessed following the general guidelines and techniques for the evaluation of digital terrestrial television broadcasting systems recommended in the ITU-R BT. 2035-2 report
Design of a simulation platform to test next generation of terrestrial DVB
Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) is a member of our daily life
routine, and nonetheless, according to new users’ necessities in the fields of
communications and leisure, new challenges are coming up. Moreover, the current Standard is not able to satisfy all the potential requirements.
For that reason, first of all, a review of the current Standard has been performed
within this work. Then, it has been identified the needing of developing a new
version of the standard, ready to support enhanced services, as for example
broadcasting transmissions to moving terminals or High Definition Television
(HDTV) transmissions, among others.
The main objective of this project is the design and development of a physical
layer simulator of the whole DVB-T standard, including both the complete transmission and reception procedures. The simulator has been developed in Matlab. A detailed description of the simulator both from a functional and an architectural point of view is included. The simulator is the base for testing any
possible modifications that may be included into the DVB-T2 future standard. In fact, several proposed enhancements have already been carried out and their performance has been evaluated. Specifically, the use of higher order modulation schemes, and the corresponding modifications in all the system
blocks, have been included and evaluated. Furthermore, the simulator will allow
testing other enhancements as the use of more efficient encoders and
interleavers, MIMO technologies, and so on.
A complete set of numerical results showing the performance of the different parts of the system, are presented in order to validate the correctness of the implementation and to evaluate both the current standard performance and the
proposed enhancements.
This work has been performed within the context of a project called FURIA,
which is a strategic research project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce. A brief description of this project and its consortium
has been also included herein, together with an introduction to the current situation of the DTTB in Spain (called TDT in Spanish)

Interference Analysis Between Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) and 4G LTE Mobile Networks in the Digital Dividend Bands
With the introduction of digital terrestrial television (DTT) and the analogue television switch-off, terrestrial broadcast spectrum in the UHF band is being released for mobile communications, in particular for fourth generation (4G) long term evolution (LTE) mobile services. This spectrum is known as digital dividend. An impending problem when deploying 4G LTE mobile networks in the digital dividend bands is that interferences may appear in the adjacent radio frequency channels used for DTT. In this paper, we analyze the adjacent coexistence of DTT and 4G LTE networks in the digital dividend bands at 700 MHz and 800 MHz. A generic framework is adopted such that results can be easily extrapolated to different scenarios and bands. Results are presented as a function of the guard band between technologies, for both LTE uplink and downlink adjacent to the DTT signals, and for fixed outdoor and portable indoor DTT reception. Also, the effect of using anti-LTE filters is studied. This work was supported by the Spectrum Regulator of Colombia ANE (Agencia Nacional del Espectro).Ribadeneira RamĂrez, JA.; MartĂnez, G.; GĂłmez Barquero, D.; Cardona, N. IoT-based management platform for real-time spectrum and energy optimization of broadcasting networks
We investigate the feasibility of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to monitor and improve the energy efficiency and spectrum usage efficiency of broadcasting networks in the Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) band. Traditional broadcasting networks are designed with a fixed radiated power to guarantee a certain service availability. However, excessive fading margins often lead to inefficient spectrum usage, higher interference, and power consumption. We present an IoT-based management platform capable of dynamically adjusting the broadcasting network radiated power according to the current propagation conditions. We assess the performance and benchmark two IoT solutions (i.e., LoRa and NB-IoT). By means of the IoT management platform the broadcasting network with adaptive radiated power reduces the power consumption by 15% to 16.3% and increases the spectrum usage efficiency by 32% to 35% (depending on the IoT platform). The IoT feedback loop power consumption represents less than 2% of the system power consumption. In addition, white space spectrum availability for secondary wireless telecommunications services is increased by 34% during 90% of the time

Cognitive Radio and TV White Space (TVWS) Applications
As more user applications emerge for wireless devices, the corresponding amount of traffic is rapidly expanding, with the corollary that ever-greater spectrum capacity is required. Service providers are experiencing deployment blockages due to insufficient bandwidth being available to accommodate such devices. TV White Space (TVWS) represents an opportunity to supplement existing licensed spectrum by exploiting unlicensed resources. TVWS spectrum has materialised from the unused TV channels in the switchover from analogue to digital platforms. The main obstacles to TVWS adoption are reliable detection of primary users (PU) i.e., TV operators and consumers, allied with specifically, the hidden node problem. This chapter presents a new Generalised Enhanced Detection Algorithm (GEDA) that exploits the unique way Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) channels are deployed in different geographical areas. GEDA effectively transforms an energy detector into a feature sensor to achieve significant improvements in detection probability of a DTT PU. Furthermore, by framing a novel margin strategy utilising a keep out contour, the hidden node issue is resolved, and a viable secondary user sensing solution formulated. Experimental results for a cognitive radio TVWS model have formalised both the bandwidth and throughput gains secured by TVWS users with this new paradigm
