An approach to knowledge engineering to support knowledge-based simulation of payload ground processing at the Kennedy Space Center

    Get PDF
Planning for processing payloads was always difficult and time-consuming. With the advent of Space Station Freedom and its capability to support a myriad of complex payloads, the planning to support this ground processing maze involves thousands of man-hours of often tedious data manipulation. To provide the capability to analyze various processing schedules, an object oriented knowledge-based simulation environment called the Advanced Generic Accomodations Planning Environment (AGAPE) is being developed. Having nearly completed the baseline system, the emphasis in this paper is directed toward rule definition and its relation to model development and simulation. The focus is specifically on the methodologies implemented during knowledge acquisition, analysis, and representation within the AGAPE rule structure. A model is provided to illustrate the concepts presented. The approach demonstrates a framework for AGAPE rule development to assist expert system development

Automatic Generation of Distributed System Simulations from UML

Nowadays, an object-oriented approach is commonly used for building computer systems. The benefits of the object-oriented method, such as scalability, stability and reusability, make this method suitable for building complex systems, including those in the distributed system area. A distributed system application usually needs to satisfy quite stringent requirements such as reliability, availability, security, etc. and the cost of building such an application will be quite high. It is therefore desirable to be able to predict the performance of the proposed system before the construction begins. In order to do this, it is important to evaluate the requirements of the new system and translate them into a specification (design). The design process helps the system developers to understand the requirements better as well as to avoid misconceptions about the system. From the specification, a simulation program can be built to mimic the execution of the proposed system. The simulation run provides some data about the states of the system and from these data, the performance of the system can be predicted and analysed. UML (Unified Modeling Language) is one example of the object-oriented design methods that has been widely used for specifying system requirements. There are also some object-oriented simulation languages/packages available, for example, SIMULA or C++SIM package, but it is often difficult to transform the system’ s requirements into a simulation program without sound knowledge of some simulation techniques. On top of that, a new simulation program needs to be built each time for different systems, which can be quite tedious. The currently available UML tools do not provide a feature to generate simulation programs automatically from UML specifications. In this paper, we describe a tool for constructing simulation programs in a generic way, based on a simple specification (preferably in a UML notation) by identifying the simulation components and their structure

    Advanced Software Development Workstation Project

    Get PDF
The Advanced Software Development Workstation Project, funded by Johnson Space Center, is investigating knowledge-based techniques for software reuse in NASA software development projects. Two prototypes have been demonstrated and a third is now in development. The approach is to build a foundation that provides passive reuse support, add a layer that uses domain-independent programming knowledge, add a layer that supports the acquisition of domain-specific programming knowledge to provide active support, and enhance maintainability and modifiability through an object-oriented approach. The development of new application software would use specification-by-reformulation, based on a cognitive theory of retrieval from very long-term memory in humans, and using an Ada code library and an object base. Current tasks include enhancements to the knowledge representation of Ada packages and abstract data types, extensions to support Ada package instantiation knowledge acquisition, integration with Ada compilers and relational databases, enhancements to the graphical user interface, and demonstration of the system with a NASA contractor-developed trajectory simulation package. Future work will focus on investigating issues involving scale-up and integration

Object-oriented Environment For Intelligent Control Engineering

Most industrial processes have several particular characteristics, system and performance requirements, which may not be obtained by classical control methodologies. In this case advanced control strategies must be considered. In face of different options, simulation using software packages is a common practice. In this paper, a simulation environment aimed at consistently and uniformly integrating different software resources is proposed. It is based on object-oriented approach implemented into a knowledge-based shell. Full potential of knowledge based systems can be used for intelligent decision. An application example is described to illustrate the abilities of the proposed environment. This example is a prototype for simulation and control of a multivariable process: a heavy oil fractionary column.101596

Modeling methodologies of synergic effects related to climate change and sustainable energy management

    Get PDF
The main aim of the present article is to highlight the synergic effects related to climate change and sustainable energy management. Due to our model and given methodology it is possible to examine the relations between the terms mentioned above. In our Knowledge Attributed Petri Net based simulation model the most significant elements are highlighted in question of integrating Cellular Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems into an object oriented formal description. This methodology implies the importance of holistic approach - namely the usage of predefined risk categories, spreading of causes and effects in physical space - that is crucial in these investigations. Only marginal attention is paid to the synergic effects related to adaptation and mitigation efforts according to climate change. Taking every result into account, this methodologically complex subject is possible to examine from the point of sustainability

An Object-Oriented Approach to Knowledge Representation in a Biomedical Domain

    Get PDF
An object-oriented approach has been applied to the different stages involved in developing a knowledge base about insulin metabolism. At an early stage the separation of terminological and assertional knowledge was made. The terminological component was developed by medical experts and represented in CORE. An object-oriented knowledge acquisition process was applied to the assertional knowledge. A frame description is proposed which includes features like states and events, inheritance and collaboration. States and events are formalized with qualitative calculus. The terminological knowledge was very useful in the development of the assertional component. It assisteed in understanding the problem domain, and in the implementation stage, it assisted in building good inheritance hierarchies

Simulation of complex environments:the Fuzzy Cognitive Agent

The world is becoming increasingly competitive by the action of liberalised national and global markets. In parallel these markets have become increasingly complex making it difficult for participants to optimise their trading actions. In response, many differing computer simulation techniques have been investigated to develop either a deeper understanding of these evolving markets or to create effective system support tools. In this paper we report our efforts to develop a novel simulation platform using fuzzy cognitive agents (FCA). Our approach encapsulates fuzzy cognitive maps (FCM) generated on the Matlab Simulink platform within commercially available agent software. We firstly present our implementation of Matlab Simulink FCMs and then show how such FCMs can be integrated within a conceptual FCA architecture. Finally we report on our efforts to realise an FCA by the integration of a Matlab Simulink based FCM with the Jack Intelligent Agent Toolkit
