    Case-based reasoning combined with statistics for diagnostics and prognosis

    Many approaches used for diagnostics today are based on a precise model. This excludes diagnostics of many complex types of machinery that cannot be modelled and simulated easily or without great effort. Our aim is to show that by including human experience it is possible to diagnose complex machinery when there is no or limited models or simulations available. This also enables diagnostics in a dynamic application where conditions change and new cases are often added. In fact every new solved case increases the diagnostic power of the system. We present a number of successful projects where we have used feature extraction together with case-based reasoning to diagnose faults in industrial robots, welding, cutting machinery and we also present our latest project for diagnosing transmissions by combining Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) with statistics. We view the fault diagnosis process as three consecutive steps. In the first step, sensor fault signals from machines and/or input from human operators are collected. Then, the second step consists of extracting relevant fault features. In the final diagnosis/prognosis step, status and faults are identified and classified. We view prognosis as a special case of diagnosis where the prognosis module predicts a stream of future features

    Modeling and fault tolerant control of an electro-hydraulic actuator

    In the modern industry, electro-hydraulic actuators (EHAs) have been applied to various applications for precise position pressure/ force control tasks. However, operating EHAs under sensor faults is one of the critical challenges for the control engineers. For its enormous nonlinear characteristics, sensor fault could lead the catastrophic failure to the overall system or even put human life in danger. Thus in this paper, a study on mathematical modeling and fault tolerant control (FTC) of a typical EHA for tracking control under sensor-fault conditions has been carried out. In the proposed FTC system, the extended Kalman-Bucy unknown input observer (EKBUIO) -based robust sensor fault detection and identification (FDI) module estimates the system states and the time domain fault information. Once a fault is detected, the controller feedback is switched from the faulty sensor to the estimated output from the EKBUIO owing to mask the sensor fault swiftly and retains the system stability. Additionally, considering the tracking accuracy of the EHA system, an efficient brain emotional learning based intelligent controller (BELBIC) is suggested as the main control unit. Effectiveness of the proposed FTC architecture has been investigated by experimenting on a test bed using an EHA in sensor failure conditions

    Vision - based self - guided Quadcopter landing on moving platform during fault detection

    Fault occurrence in the quadcopter is very common during operation in the air. This paper presents a real-time implementation to detect the fault and then the system is guaranteeing to safely land on the surface, even the moving landing platform. Primarily, PixHawk auto-pilot was used to verify in real-time, with platform detection and various environmental conditions. The method is ensuring the quadcopter operates in the landing area zone with the help of a GPS feature. Then the precise landing on the astable-landing platform is calibrated automatically using the vision-based learning feedback technique. The proposed objective is developed using reconfigurable Raspberry Pi-3 with a Pi camera. The full decision on an efficient landing algorithm is deployed into the quadcopter. The system is self-guided and automatically returns to home-based whenever the fault detects. The study is conducted with the situation of low battery operation and the trigger of auto-pilot helps to land the device safely before any mal-function. The system is featured with predetermined speed and altitude while navigating the home base, thus improves the detection process. Finally, the experiment study provided successful trials to track usable platform, landing on a restricted area, and disarm the motors autonomously

    Learning for predictions: Real-time reliability assessment of aerospace systems

    Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) aim to predict the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of a system and to allow a timely planning of replacement of components, limiting the need for corrective maintenance and the down time of equipment. A major challenge in system prognostics is the availability of accurate physics based representations of the grow rate of faults. Additionally, the analysis of data acquired during flight operations is traditionally time consuming and expensive. This work proposes a computational method to overcome these limitations through the dynamic adaptation of the state-space model of fault propagation to on-board observations of system’s health. Our approach aims at enabling real-time assessment of systems health and reliability through fast predictions of the Remaining Useful Life that account for uncertainty. The strategy combines physics-based knowledge of the system damage propagation rate, machine learning and real-time measurements of the health status to obtain an accurate estimate of the RUL of aerospace systems. The RUL prediction algorithm relies on a dynamical estimator filter, which allows to deal with nonlinear systems affected by uncertainties with unknown distribution. The proposed method integrates a dynamical model of the fault propagation, accounting for the current and past measured health conditions, the past time history of the operating conditions (such as input command, load, temperature, etc.), and the expected future operating conditions. The model leverages the knowledge collected through the record of past fault measurements, and dynamically adapts the prediction of the damage propagation by learning from the observed time history. The original method is demonstrated for the RUL prediction of an electromechanical actuator for aircraft flight controls. We observe that the strategy allows to refine rapid predictions of the RUL in fractions of seconds by progressively learning from on-board acquisitions

    Advancing automation and robotics technology for the Space Station Freedom and for the U.S. economy

    In April 1985, as required by Public Law 98-371, the NASA Advanced Technology Advisory Committee (ATAC) reported to Congress the results of its studies on advanced automation and robotics technology for use on Space Station Freedom. This material was documented in the initial report (NASA Technical Memorandum 87566). A further requirement of the law was that ATAC follow NASA's progress in this area and report to Congress semiannually. This report is the fifteenth in a series of progress updates and covers the period between 27 Feb. - 17 Sep. 1992. The progress made by Levels 1, 2, and 3 of the Space Station Freedom in developing and applying advanced automation and robotics technology is described. Emphasis was placed upon the Space Station Freedom program responses to specific recommendations made in ATAC Progress Report 14. Assessments are presented for these and other areas as they apply to the advancement of automation and robotics technology for Space Station Freedom

    An improved turbomachinery conditionmonitoring method using multivariate statistical analysis

    Industrial practitioners require a well-structured, proactive and precise conditionmonitoring package in order to optimize turbomachinery operation. Typically, conventional condition monitoring uses built-in software to capture faults or degradation processes based on threshold limits recommended by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). However, because OEM manual concurrent monitoring involves abundant information parameters, it is dependent on human intervention, insensitive to the development of machinery faults and tends to generate error-prone outcomes. This study proposes a simplified and advanced healthmonitoring method for turbomachinery using a multivariate statistical analysis (MSA) technique. By exploiting mathematical relationships between OEM recommended variables, the significance of input parameter is identified based on weighting factor. With a highly-correlated input subset, the revised condition monitoring method delivershigher sensitivity and a more accurate performance in investigating machine assessment mode

    Federated Robust Embedded Systems: Concepts and Challenges

    The development within the area of embedded systems (ESs) is moving rapidly, not least due to falling costs of computation and communication equipment. It is believed that increased communication opportunities will lead to the future ESs no longer being parts of isolated products, but rather parts of larger communities or federations of ESs, within which information is exchanged for the benefit of all participants. This vision is asserted by a number of interrelated research topics, such as the internet of things, cyber-physical systems, systems of systems, and multi-agent systems. In this work, the focus is primarily on ESs, with their specific real-time and safety requirements. While the vision of interconnected ESs is quite promising, it also brings great challenges to the development of future systems in an efficient, safe, and reliable way. In this work, a pre-study has been carried out in order to gain a better understanding about common concepts and challenges that naturally arise in federations of ESs. The work was organized around a series of workshops, with contributions from both academic participants and industrial partners with a strong experience in ES development. During the workshops, a portfolio of possible ES federation scenarios was collected, and a number of application examples were discussed more thoroughly on different abstraction levels, starting from screening the nature of interactions on the federation level and proceeding down to the implementation details within each ES. These discussions led to a better understanding of what can be expected in the future federated ESs. In this report, the discussed applications are summarized, together with their characteristics, challenges, and necessary solution elements, providing a ground for the future research within the area of communicating ESs
