Patent Data for Engineering Design: A Critical Review and Future Directions
Patent data have long been used for engineering design research because of
its large and expanding size, and widely varying massive amount of design
information contained in patents. Recent advances in artificial intelligence
and data science present unprecedented opportunities to develop data-driven
design methods and tools, as well as advance design science, using the patent
database. Herein, we survey and categorize the patent-for-design literature
based on its contributions to design theories, methods, tools, and strategies,
as well as the types of patent data and data-driven methods used in respective
studies. Our review highlights promising future research directions in patent
data-driven design research and practice.Comment: Accepted by JCIS
Human-AI Synergy in Creativity and Innovation
In order to maximize creative behavior, humans and computers need to collaborate in a manner that will leverage the strengths of both. A 2017 mathematical proof shows two limits to how innovative a computer can be. Humans can help counteract these demonstrated limits. Humans possess many mental blind spots to innovating (e.g., functional fixedness, design fixation, analogy blindness, etc.), and particular algorithms can help counteract these shortcomings. Further, since humans produce the corpora used by AI technology, human blind spots to innovation are implicit within the text processed by AI technology. Known algorithms that query humans in particular ways can effectively counter these text-based blind spots. Working together, a human-computer partnership can achieve higher degrees of innovation than either working alone. To become an effective partnership, however, a special interface is needed that is both human- and computer-friendly. This interface called BrainSwarming possesses a linguistic component, which is a formal grammar that is also natural for humans to use and a visual component that is easily represented by standard data structures. Further, the interface breaks down innovative problem solving into its essential components: a goal, sub-goals, resources, features, interactions, and effects. The resulting human-AI synergy has the potential to achieve innovative breakthroughs that either partner working alone may never achieve
Purpose – to explore a crowdsourcing data-driven approach to construct crowdknowledge databases for innovation through supporting creative idea generation. In the approach, social media will be used as platforms to crowdsource knowledge for producing the databases.
Findings. Creativity is an essential element of innovation, but producing creative ideas is often challenging in design. Many computational tools have become available recently to support designers in producing creative ideas that are new to individuals. As a standard feature, most of the tools rely on the databases employed, such as ConceptNet and the US Patent Database. This study highlighted that the limitations of these databases have constrained the capabilities of the tools and, thereby, new computational databases supporting the generation of new ideas to a crowd or even history are needed. Crowdsourcing outsources tasks conventionally performed in-house to a crowd and uses external knowledge to solve problems and democratize innovation. Social media is often employed in crowdsourcing for a crowd to create and share knowledge.
Originality/value/scientific novelty of the research. This paper proposes a novel approach employing social media to crowdsource knowledge from a crowd for constructing crowd knowledge databases.
Practical importance of the research. The crowd knowledge database is expected to be used by the current computational tools to support designers producing highly creative ideas that are new to the crowd, in new product design, and ultimately to innovation.
Research limitations/Future research. In this study to provide insights and potential directions for future research are discussed that challenges of employing described approach.
Paper type – theoretical.

Semantic networks for engineering design: State of the art and future directions
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers via the DOI in this recordIn the past two decades, there has been increasing use of semantic networks in engineering design for supporting various activities, such as knowledge extraction, prior art search, idea generation and evaluation. Leveraging large-scale pre-trained graph knowledge databases to support engineering design-related natural language processing (NLP) tasks has attracted a growing interest in the engineering design research community. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a survey of the state-of-the-art semantic networks for engineering design and propositions of future research to build and utilize large-scale semantic networks as knowledge bases to support engineering design research and practice. The survey shows that WordNet, ConceptNet and other semantic networks, which contain common-sense knowledge or are trained on non-engineering data sources, are primarily used by engineering design researchers to develop methods and tools. Meanwhile, there are emerging efforts in constructing engineering and technical-contextualized semantic network databases, such as B-Link and TechNet, through retrieving data from technical data sources and employing unsupervised machine learning approaches. On this basis, we recommend six strategic future research directions to advance the development and uses of large-scale semantic networks for artificial intelligence applications in engineering design
Design and development of a cognitive assistant for the architecting of earth observing satellites
The aim of this thesis is to develop a cognitive assistant for architecting earth
observation satellite systems. The motivation for such a system comes from
both the recent commercial success of different cognitive assistants as well as
the existing challenges in system architecture in general, including earth observation
satellite systems. This system has been developed using a layered
architecture, where the first layer is a set of front-ends which are deployed
on different client machines, including computers, virtual reality headsets,
and physical embodiments. The next layer is a server which distributes the
requests the user makes from all the front-ends to the different back-ends,
which are the ones responsible for performing the basic functionalities of the
system. A system of skills, pieces of software which provide the functionalities
the end user uses, is built on top of this server. Finally, the back-ends and
the skills use different data sources to perform their functionalities. This report
describes the whole architecture of the system, with special emphasis on
the “Historical Database” and the “Historian Skill”, which I have developed
by myself, unlike other parts of the system where the development effort was
shared. The final result of this thesis is Daphne, the first open-source cognitive
assistant to support the high-level design of earth observation satellite

The construction industry has always been an important part of human economic activity. As time goes on, building techniques and construction methods are changing. However, with the increasing acceleration of social development, traditional construction methods have reached their limits. Both in China and Japan are facing the problem of aging population structure and low birth rate. The human demand for complex forms of construction is growing, yet experienced workers are in short supply. The construction industry continues to undergo industrial upgrading, while the rise of digital design and the widespread use of robotics point the way to the future of the construction industry. To explore the possibilities of parametric design and robotic automated construction through two practical projects. We also explore the factors affecting the application of robotic automated construction technology by building an evolutionary game model to provide a policy reference for the government, construction companies and public universities.
